This review is long over-dued, but I wanted to make sure I really sat down and wrote a good review for Sandra. I'm pretty picky with my hair (due to many bad hair experiences in the past) so I made sure I did thorough research before I actually decided on Sandra. First off, her Yelp reviews are amazing, I mean, it is no easy task to get a perfect rating, especially with hair, even if there are under 100 reviews. Everyone is right when they say that Sandra is friendly. Even before coming here, I could already tell. Before I booked any appointments with Sandra, I called her to ask about the Yelp deal I saw ($20 off a $60 haircut) because I had long hair and the pricing on her website said that it's $70 for long hair, so I was wondering if the deal was applicable in any way. Sandra told me that she would give me $20 off regardless because it was my first cut with her, and with that being said, she helped me book my appointment. Judging from what I can tell, Sandra is definitely skilled in what she does. She asked me for what I wanted, every detail about it (shape, length, style, solid or textured). I told her I wanted bangs and how I used to have them before but they always covered my eyes. She was honest and told me that bangs would make me look more youthful, but she gave me the different options of bangs she could do for me and even positioned my hair to show me how it might look. I was still indecisive but she told me it was okay because we can get to that later. Sandra is very detailed in her cut. I can tell because I've had a variety of hairstylists, ranging in different levels of skill. She cut every section carefully, analyzed her cut, and cut some more when needed. Whenever she used any products, she told me what it was and it's function. When I finally decided on my bangs, she cut them a little longer at first and asked them if I preferred them that way or shorter, saying she'd rather cut them multiple times to get it right than to cut it once and it turn out too short. After she finished my bangs, she showed me how to style them so I could achieve the same result at home. I was more than satisfied with my hair. I had no doubts coming in and loved Sandra on my way out. She is skilled, friendly, knows what she's doing, and is passionate and loves what she does! I highly recommend coming to visit her if you can afford it. She also told me that before my next cut, I get a free bang trim, God knows how fast bangs grow, and Sandra is reasonable enough to offer that option. I received so many compliments on my cut, I know I need to go back to Sandra for my next haircut! read more

This is a long over due review! I found Sandra on yelp and I am so glad I did. I had gone with out a hair cut for a year, so when I decided to chop my locks and donate my hair to "locks of love," it was important to me to find someone I could trust. I follow the Curly Girl Method, and have 2c-3a hair. It is important to me to find a hair stylist who KNOWS how to cut curly hair. Sandra is amazing, she understands how to care for curly hair and she enjoys working with it. She used DevaCurl products on my hair to condition and style. She even washed my hair in cold water! I love her for that! She knows how to make curly hair shape correctly and she spends lots of time cutting the curls properly. She also knows how to diffuse curly hair properly to avoid max frizz. This review is long overdue! I first met Sandra about 2 years ago for an appointment to get my hair styled for my birthday. She did an amazing job! (She even came in on her day off when she had prior plans because I mentioned that it was for my birthday. So sweet!) I knew that I would have to come back if I ever wanted my hair cut. I recently came back to get a whole lotta hair chopped off. Again, she did a wonderful job! She knows how I like to style my hair and gave tips on how to do so. She even gave me a cute little pin up hair style before I left!! Just wanted to add an update to my review since its been over a year since I found Sandra and I have been consistently going every 8 weeks since. I am still so in love with what she does with my hair. As I previously mentioned I had major anxiety about getting my hair done and now when I got her I am so excited to see the outcome. She has helped me to grow my hair even longer and my biggest complaint about previous people was they always cut too much off. When i first started coming to get to the healthy hair I probably needed a few inches trimmed off but she listened to me and built up to it cutting just a little each time so it wasn't a shock. I've always wanted to go a little bolder with my hair color and we've slowly been working to that(Incase you missed it I had major anxiety about changes to my hair). Last appointment we did a more subtle red ombré which I absolutely loved and got many compliments on. Though I felt like I still wanted to go more bold so today we did with a very bright red on the ombré and I have been smiling everytime I look down at it since. Both processes she was completely upfront about the effects it would have on my hair and how to maintain it. Every product she has recommended has done exactly what she said it would so definitely listen to her even if they're a bit pricey. Sandra was really friendly and made you feel comfortable. She first talked me through what I wanted and even re-confirmed by looking at pictures on google to make sure we were both on the same page, which I really appreciated. The DevaCurl cut was super fast, probably 30mins max. because she knows what she's doing and has a great eye. After the cut, her assistant washed and conditioned my hair per the DevaCurl system and the head massage was an extra plus! Afterwards, Sandra tried a new product in my hair also per the DevaCurl system and then I was off to the dryer for about 25 mins or so. Lastly, Sandra scrunched up my curls to loosen up the product a bit and give life and volume back to the tight neat curls that just draped on my head and she did a tiny bit of trimming at the end just perfecting the cut and I left happy and knowing I will be back for my next trim! read more

But sandra managed to make it wonderful without cutting too much of the length! I was so worried that I'd have to go short in order to balance my hair, I'm so glad I didn't have to that! The BEST hair cut, color, and style I have EVER gotten. I have curly hair and my cut/color has always been a little hit or miss, even when done at a highly reputable place such as DevaChan Salon in nyc. I've seen Sandra for three haircuts and one color now, and it's time to tell the truth: She's amazing and San Jose/Santa Clara is lucky to have her. She listens to what your needs and fears are and 'gets' the look and feel you're going for. More importantly, she's able to work with what nature's given you, and bring your hair goals to life. She works very quickly which, to be honest, worried me a little at my first haircut. But since I've been back twice after, it's safe to say her speed is an added bonus. Mehir (sp?) gives a mean hair wash which I LOVE and that puts me to sleep. Designs by Sandra better never move away from the South Bay or I'll be a very sad walking hair disaster. I came to Sandra after researching for a few days about a good curly hair stylist as well as a good DevaCurl stylist (which I just found out about and I'm so happy I did). I called Sandra and another salon that I was considering on the same day and Sandra was the only one to call me back - Period. She provided me with details and an option to text her to book an appointment or to ask questions! This was a bonus for me because I feel like I hardly have time for a long phone call and I also like having messages that carry important details of my appointments so I can review the details - Anyways, it's safe to say that I'm so happy I stayed with Sandra. 1st - She was so sweet and welcoming. Years later I still vouch for Sandra! However she got so much clientele moving salons her schedule got a little impacted. So she suggested that I go to her protégé MEHR. At first I felt kind of passed down and it felt a little unprofessional for her to suggest that negating my preference. BUT, but she explained her intentions of just getting me taken care of right away were genuine and turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Mehr does great work! She is very, very kind. She is super gentle but totally effective with my curls. For now she is a little bit cheaper but more than like will eventually match Sandra's pricing. This was our first visit to Sandra, based on a friend's recommendation. This was also my 7 year old's first hair cut. My daughter has fabulously curly hair, but we needed help to make the most of her curls as they've changed over time. We've struggled figuring out what would keep her curls from drying out, minimize tangles and reduce the amount of time in the morning getting ready for school. Sandra was so easy to talk to and made my daughter feel welcomed and put her at ease. The cut was excellent. It balanced out her different curl lengths without taking off too much length. It was easy to see the shape and laid perfectly at the end. Sandra excels in how to use the Deva Curl products, explaining why each product worked best for her, along with demonstrating the techniques that worked best for her type of curls. I asked a lot of questions and Sandra answered all of them, without making me feel bad. It was also great to see all the different types of curly hair in the shop. I saw this yelp deal and couldn't pass it up based on the great reviews Sandra has! I have a fairly long commute from work, so I was pleased when Sandra was able to give me 7:30 p.m. appt. I read a review that said she did a good job with curly hair, so I gave her a chance even though she didn't advertise herself using the devacut method on curly hair (which is how I've gotten my hair cut before). I had a clear idea of what I wanted. I knew I had heat damage, including a patch of hair at the tips that was missing due to a Halloween mishap, lol, and I knew I would have to let her cut off quite a bit...so I was VERY nervous!! She schedules a 15 min. consultation into the appointment so she can get a clear idea of what you want. I wanted a good amount of the ends taken off b/c the curl wasn't curling the same, and some blended layers for volume. We discussed how much she had to cut to even my hair out in length, but when I told her I just couldn't bring myself to cut it that much (I seriously almost cried, but held it together), she saw the fear in my eyes and suggested I go ahead and let her cut it dry--the devacut method--so that she could blend the length of my hair. I was surprised she knew so much about curly hair since they don't seem to teach hair stylists how to work with curly hair in school, but she said that's she's attended many seminars on the topic so I felt I was in good hands. We even chatted about hairstylists that mess up curly hair b/c they just don't understand that curly hair is SPECIAL and many things must be considered before you cut! Sandra did a great job, loved the massage during the wash, and she made my hair look healthier! She kept the shape I like and she took the time to style my hair and make sure I left 100% happy. I've known Sandra since she was a student. After she colored my hair for the first time, I was amazed and thought she doesn't belong in the school but instead in her own salon! I've got a lot of compliments from everyone about my hair and asked who did it, they were baffled that it was from a student because it looks like a hair stylist from a high end salon with 10+years experience did it. Sandra definitely has a way to make you look like a million bucks--kinda like those hair commercials where the model's hair is aired. After a few times that I've seen Sandra, I told her that I will follow her wherever she goes after she graduates and I did. Sandra is very detailed and meticulous with her work and she has always listened on what I want with my hair and she executes them flawlessly. I'm very crazy when it comes to my hair cos I always want to change my color or cut since I get bored but Sandra has always been innovative with my hair and I've always been happy with her artwork =). She's very creative and talented. Speaking of talent, Sandra is also multi-talented--she also does make up. I got the first taste of it last August when she did my hair and make up for my engagement shoot. I told her I want the whole mad men kinda look (the women's look.lol) and voila that's what she did. Everyone who saw me that day and saw my engagement pictures really loved my look. The hair and make up (airbrush) too lasted the whole day, it probably could have lasted longer but I removed it before I slept. She also did my pre-wedding trial hair (since of course I've hired her to do all of our hair for the wedding and I can't wait). I showed her the hairstyle I like and before I know it, it was on me.
