We love Mexican food but havent been thrilled with much in Brea. We came here last week and we have finally found our place. The restaurant is smaller and casual. Everything from the chips and salsa to the homemade corn tortillas to the perfectly seasoned and cooked meat was outstanding. The service really put it over the top for us. These people know what they're doIf you love Mexican food you won't regret coming here. Bonus: 7.99 for a huge burrito (any kind) is even better. We will be back. Probably too often. Almost a year and a baby later we still come here ALL the time. They've expanded and upgraded a lot since we started coming but their food still is amazing and we're regulars now. This place has delicious Mexican food. It is not upscale, a modest restaurant and they're always busy. They're located in a small strip mall. When you walk in you get a warm welcome. Let me just start with I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, however when I crave it I need it to be amazing! They did not fail! I will be back for sure!!!! The menu is full of great tradition favorites. The staff is sweet, welcoming, and helpful. The food was a great! Awesome rich flavors and it doesn't stop there! We came here because of the Yelp reviews. It was nice that they had a table ready and waiting for us (party of 10 @ 4pm on Saturday) but we called ahead. Unlike many other Mexican restaurants, they don't use lard in their beans - which is great for my Vegetarian friends. The portions were big and overall, everyone was happy with their food. I felt that my chicken flautas were a little off so I didn't finish them. Another person couldn't eat her enchiladas because they were too spicy for her as was the salsa that came with the chips. It would be good if they gave you an option of how spicy you want your food: Mild, Med, Spicy. The servers were very nice but they were a little slow on refilling drinks and checking on us. This is the only place in my area where I think has the best authentic Mexican food. The servers are all amazing and they do the best to accommodate to your needs. I recently went back there to pick up some street tacos and noticed that they finished renovating and expanding their restaurant. This place needs a lot more love from all those in the OC area. Their tacos and their plates are simply amazing. I would highly recommend their lengua (tongue) and tripas (tripe) tacos. The meats are extremely tender and delicious. The food was decent, but not worth waiting for 45 minutes to get seated. =( Then the service was a bit laggy. Taco tuesdays $1.25 a taco. I went back and tried to get a togo and thought that might have been easier and faster. NOPE! still waited about 40 minutes for my tacos. Really good, very surprised to see authentic Mexican home style food in this area. My family and I have been here several times for breakfast and now a couple of times for lunch and dinner, definitely happy to have close to home when I'm not able to make legit Mexican food at home. My husband and I have been here a few times and have not been disappointed with the food. It has become our go to for mexican food when we want to stay local. They are sometimes very busy so the service may be a little slow but so worth it. They are expanding so it should help. We have tried different plates..taco trio, taquitos, caldo de res, carne asada, chicken tortilla soup and others. They have all been fresh and tasty. Reviewing Mexican restaurants in SoCal is tough. I was thinking about giving La Puerta 5 stars, but if you are coming from far away, you will most likely drive past a dozen other excellent places to get some good Mexican grub. So I will leave this review at a strong 4.5 stars and say La Puerta should be on your radar if you are in the neighborhood. La Puerta makes their own fresh tortillas for tacos. That separates them from most places, and I wouldn't order a taco here with out one. It's a little bit more than the standard street tacos tortillas that they also offer, but definitely worth it. I've tried the carne asada, chicken, al pastor, and carnitas. The carnitas are my favorite, as it's always tough to beat a roasted pig, no matter what type of food you are talking about. The al pastor marinated pork could have used a little more flavor, but was definitely the prettiest taco with bright red sauce and green guacamole. The chicken and the carne asada were traditional topped with just chopped onion, cilantro, and a good spicy red salsa. If you are coming here for traditional street tacos, La Puerta has you covered, especially on their $1.25 Taco Tuesdays. Definitely worth trying. This place is easily one of the top two Mexican restaurants in Brea(El Farjito being the other). Tacos are excellent. I really wanted to love this place..it's walking distance from my house. I've been once when it opened and it was pretty good, but I'm the only one who likes Mexican in the fam. Fast forward to this week when I tried it again. Service was HORRIBLE. Three parties came in after us and were served, are and got their check before we even got our food. I was charged regular price for tacos on taco Tuesday night, not a big deal but after the horrible service, it was just bad. $2.55 for a taco and $2.50 for a side of sour cream? I don't get thw high reviews. One of the worst Mexican restaurants Ive ever been to. Tacos were served cold. Meat was not carne asada. The meat looked like someone chewed carne asada and then spit it out to serve. I asked the waitress what kind of meat it was. Her face was classic. While they offered to give me a new plate, I declined. I take pride in what I serve people. For the owners to serve that and call it carne asada is offensive. Super delicious homemade corn tortillas, chips and salsa delight (the chips not greasy at all)! I had the Mexican scramble with jalapenos and it was so fresh tasting and good. My husband had the chorizo and eggs, and honestly, it looked like some of the best I have seen. No grease at all. The service was super friendly and food was quick. My only complaint is that the dish comes with potatoes and not rice, and the potatoes were pretty darn bland. We will be back for taco Tuesday! read more
