Had the choriqueso which was pretty rich and salty and great with the jalapenos and a squeeze of lime to cut through. Also got the molcajete that was amazing. Cactus, carne asada, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, queso fresco, and onions all sit in the molcajete filled with a tomato sauce. So much flavor and can easily feed 3 people. Had all of this with their house-made corn tortillas that were an absolute masterpiece. Also had their caldo de albondigas which was far more subtle than the molcajete but very good and their margarita which was very balanced and refreshing. My foodie friend loves tamales and she'd heard great things about the tamales at La Puerta, so off we went to check it out. The restaurant is located in a very unassuming shopping center and from the outside there's not anything that really makes it stand out. BUT, as soon as you walk through the front door, you're warmly greeted by the friendly and welcoming staff. And the decor, well it's a little over the top ~ it's an explosion of artificial greenery and flowers that gives the dining room almost a rainforest kind of vibe. It's also very spacious inside and could easily accommodate a large, "private" event/celebration in the side area. La Puerta opens at 9AM so they do have quite an extensive breakfast menu with both Mexican and American dishes. At another visit I'm looking forward to trying one of their Benedicts! But we tried to stay on task, so my friend got the tamale & chile relleno plate and I chose their à la carte flautas (one with carnitas and shredded beef for the other) and a crispy potato taco. My friend really enjoyed her beef tamale and would consider ordering by the half dozen to take home & freeze. Although the chile relleno was filled with plenty of creamy cheese, the sauce could have used more seasoning as it tasted mostly like a basic tomato sauce. I'm usually a chile relleno girl, too, but decided to try their flautas and a crispy taco. Both were SO good! The meat in the flautas was tender and flavorful and the potato taco was piled with fresh shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sprinkled with cheese and drizzled with crema ~ YUM!! The decor is the first thing we noticed when we set foot in the restaurant. It was a nice different. The service appeared okay at first. However, we didn't get some of our drinks right away so we had to ask them because the waiter had forgotten. Once the food was served, it looked delicious. We ordered the molcajete and shared it amongst 2 adults and 2 children. There was more than enough to share even though the menu suggests only sharing between two people. The molcejete had carne asada, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, cheese and cactus all bathing in a boiling red sauce. It was all delicious... except there was barely any cheese. We had only 3 small pieces. Otherwise, it was really good. We had such a great experience at De Oro La Puerta! If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Orange County, this place is definitely worth visiting. Their food is not only AMAZING but the decor looks like a castle with so much greenery! One of our favorite dishes was the molcajete, which arrived sizzling in a volcanic stone bowl packed with grilled chicken, carne asada, shrimp, chorizo, and more. It was flavorful, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. The Mojarra Frita was another standout. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the portion was huge. It paired really well with the homemade beans, which we loved even more knowing they don't use lard. We also ordered the albóndigas soup, and it was incredibly hearty and comforting. The broth had so much flavor, and it tasted like a homemade family recipe. The service was friendly (especially Diana!!), the portions were generous, and you can really tell they take pride in serving authentic Mexican cuisine. De Oro La Puerta has been on my radar to try for authentic Mexican cuisine. Popped in on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a decent lunch crowd - looks like a fairly good customer base from people working close by. Upon seating we were provided with chips and salsa very quickly and asked for drink orders. A few minutes later, our server came to check in on us to order food. Food cooked fresh as it took about 15-20 minutes. Carne Asada ($24.99): Thin flaps of carne asada with grilled jalapeños, pico de gallo, guacamole, rice, beans, and two tortillas of choice. Meat was a tad overcooked / dry. Used the salsa that was provided with the chips to help with moisture. Steak Fajitas ($25.99): Sizzling cast iron of cut steak, peppers and onions served alongside rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, and two tortillas of choice. Really good flavors from the fajitas though some areas were quite burnt. The sizzling plate also came with a knife left on the side of the cast iron which partially melted due to the heat. Decent portion sizes for the price though it would have been great to get three tortillas for the size of the protein instead of just two. Restaurant inside is a bit dark but they've decorated the ceilings nicely with hanging greenery. Since we went during December, there was also lots of Christmas decor around. The moment we walked into this restaurant we were delighted to see that the restaurant was very clean and the beautiful flowers everywhere, freshness. The staff was very polite and welcomed us with a big smile and seated us, it took a while for us to order due to so many yummy choices and also they serve breakfast all day! So my wife ordered the three soft taco plate steak, chicken and shrimp she said the shrimp was awesome not previously frozen and the tortillas are freshly made, I ordered chicken fajitas, wow the taste of the vegetables and seasoning was out of this world every bite was outrageously delicious and so much chicken awesome and hand made tortillas awesome, my son ordered a carnitas wet burrito he had many wet burritos at various places, but not like this, I believe it's all the chefs awesome twist on originality. If I could give 10 stars I would! This is the first time I dined here tonight with some girlfriends, and the only thing I'm mad about, is that I haven't been here sooner. Family owned business, which I love, kitchen ran by just women which I really love, and the food is so delicious and authentic, it's like home cooking from my grandmother. The staff is so nice and friendly, I met Maggie the owner who was very welcoming as we walked in. Mario was our server, and super attentive. I love the attention to detail down to the uniforms, he was dressed in a button up shirt and tie very clean cut. You could tell he was a server, and it just showed me they take pride in their business. The prices are absolutely beyond fair, and the service is first rate. The ambience inside is so so pretty. The menu is what drew me to this restaurant, and I so badly wanted to love the food, but the asada burrito I ordered had so much fat in the meat that barely any of it was edible. This review is meant to cancel out all the negative reviews!!! I have been coming here with my husband since 2018. My family has since grown to 6 members with super picky kids ages 7,5,3 &1. We all lick our plates clean because the basics- the rice, beans and homemade tortillas are so good. We're a tough crowd with so many little kids but the servers have always been the utmost friendliest and kindest. We're usually seated right away and are served chips, salsa and drinks immediately. We try to come at least once every 1-2 months and I cannot recall a bad experience ever. So that's a lot of visits and this review should mean something. Yes, the food takes a minute but it's cooked to order and comes out hot. As for the pricing- please tell me what is not expensive these days? We pay the same amount at Islands, or any sit down restaurant. It is not a quick, $2 taco spot, it's fine casual dining. Besides, nothing is cheap anymore. Even in-n-out costs over $40 for my family. In this economy, eating out is a treat and we always choose to come back here. Lastly, to that horrible review below- my family is Asian and I have always experienced wonderful, friendly service from every single server. Not only are they so friendly, but fast. Just went there last night with a beautiful girl and a good friend. They are located on Kraemer Ave in Brea, somewhat close to Placentia. We ordered two dishes. I got three tacos with rice and beans, and she got something called the Caldo de Res which is sorta like a beef stew in soup with lots of veggies and assorted things like celery, squash, zucchini, and cabbage. She really loved the soup, and I enjoyed my soft tacos. I got one with chicken, beef, and shrimp. They were quite filling and tasty. It stayed until closing, eating and talking, then got to watch the Canelo fight for free :) Overall, a great evening and good food. The customer service here is very bizarre. There's a small handful of nice servers and then a BUNCH of very cranky women at the front who literally give you a death glare when you enter like "How dare you come to my restaurant and want to be seated!" I came in for take out and no one offered to give me a menu, no one came to the register for a while to take my order, and I got several weird stares from an older lady and a couple other younger women working there. So many people walked past me before I had to ask for a menu. Finally, a male employee helped and was kind. I also noticed that the female employees treated men differently who came in. YIKES. A change I noticed in this restaurant too was DYED red and green chips. They always used to just give regular corn chips. The ones they give now are LOADED with food dye garbage; I refused to even let my kids eat one. We also noticed the bean and cheese burrito was almost inedible because it just had way too much thick, stringy cheese. It was borderline dangerous. My two toddlers were struggling eating it so we finally took it away and took out most of the cheese. My husband took a bite and was choking on it too. Very weird experience. We used to come here very often, but stopped because of the several rude employees. We came back for a quick take out and now have decided we will never be back again. Can't believe I haven't written a review for De Oro! This is our local go-to Mexican joint that we frequent very often. It's a favorite for folks in Brea with a good selection of food, good quality/taste, and great customer service. We had friends from Yorba Linda that would drive here for their fill of Mexican bc it was their favorite spot. My husband's go to is a California burrito wherever he goes and the California burrito here is very good. We get it with Al pastor instead of carne asada here since their Al pastor is more juicy and tender. My go to is the Mr. Garcia burrito which is a shrimp and steak wet burrito with enchilada sauce on top. I do half green and half red which gives you a little more versatility of flavor. It's such a generous portion! Some other favorites are the pozole which I loveeee to get when I want a warm, deep soup. When I'm trying to eat less carbs/calories, their carne asada plate has really hit the spot. They have a great selection of dishes from tacos to enchiladas to fajitas to quesadillas to mole. You should be able to find a dish here for anyone that enjoys Mexican food.
