We have been going to de Afghanan for at least 10 years but mostly we get kabab or bolani, and it's always amazing. Today my aunt ordered kadu borani which is supposed to be deep fried thin slices of pumpkin. We got this big chunk of boiled squash with yogurt instead. It looked terrible, tasted terrible and most importantly was nothing kadu borani should look like. A very bad and wrong representation of our country's cuisine. De Afghanan you can do better than this. Afghanistan's food is way better than your boiled pumpkin that you're serving people and foreigners who are not familiar will think this joke of a dish you served them is authentic. Food is delicious but charging 20% service fee is outrageous. serving food is part of services in a restaurant so why are you charging customers for a service that should be included with everything. And their wait time terrible. I definitely suggest picking up food not dining. Get rid of 20% service fee if you want to keep your customers. read more

4.5 stars!! This place tends to be busy! Unless you come before the dinner rush... be prepare to wait at least 30 minutes. Parking is also a hit or miss. They have a small parking area on the side, a parking lot in the back (kinda dark alley), or street parking. Service is decent. The staff is nice. Don't expect too much because most of the time it's hectic, so you just have to flag them down if you need something or they forgot something. I usually go in a group of 4 or more, so for starters we always get a bunch of things and share them. *Bodinjan Borani- roasted eggplant (delicious) *Bolani- stuffed with squash if they have it (yummmm) *Mantu- like an Asian dumpling (delicious) For my main dish I ALWAYS get the chicken and chaplee kabob combo. The chicken is so moist, juicey, and flavorful. The Chaplee has a hint of spice that is soft, flavorful, and crispy on the sides. Then you can't forget about dessert. Although, sadly, sometimes you have to because they don't have it. I get the sheer yakh jhala. It's basically vanilla ice cream with clear noodles, in ice and rose water, and topped with some kind of syrup and pistachios. Although it sounds weird and can be strange at first. IT'S DELICIOUS AND WILL GROW ON YOU!! This is my go to spot when I'm in the area. I have tried other afghan places, but this remains my first and favorite!! Food is delicous! Service, unfortunately, is lacking. They should probably hire one more wait staff as there were only two ladies working the floor. It is very hard to flag down one of the waitresses, and when you do, they forget to deliver what you ask. For instance, I had to ask for water, menus, and naan bread twice! Our dishes also took 30+ minutes for them to come out and that is added to the 20 minutes it took for the waitresses to take our order after we were ready. On the brighter side, my beef and chicken kebab dish was delicious! I'm not sure if it was because I was starving or because it was actually very good (could be both). Our friends took us here last week as a wedding gift treat! This place is DELICIOUS! It was my first time eating Afghan food and I cant believe I have not tried it sooner! The location is small and family operated. We met the owner on our way out and he introduced us to his cute pup and told us some history about the restaurant. FOOD: Ordered appetizer Bodinjan (roasted eggplant): Barely warm and rather bland. I bit into a few cold spots so I'm assuming it was reheated). Stopped after two bites. Chicken Kebab- moist, juicy and seemed fresh off of the grill but just not very flavorful Basmati Rice- just bland The green chutney(?) they provide did help spice up the chicken. Drink options: Coke fountain drinks (including iced tea) and a couple of other beverages I can't recall at this time. SERVICE: Slow/inattentive (practically nonexistent)service (waitress never brought water we requested when we first ordered our food. The waitress who took our order disappeared so we eventually flagged someone down for water. Actually, no one ever checked in again once the waitress took the order. We stopped by for lunch after my dentist appointment around the corner. I mean, at least I'm not stuffing my face with donuts after the dentist told me to floss, right? We got the beef kabob plate and a potato bolani (a flat bread stuffed with a potato filling). At first we weren't sure if it would be enough food, but it was definitely sufficient for two people. Overall, great flavors and good portions. The beef kabob plate comes with six sizeable pieces of beef, a tomato / cucumber salad, two pieces of bread, and a healthy portion of basmati rice. Each piece of beef kabob was 2" x 1.5" x 1.5". The beef was well-spiced (flavor spice, not hot spice), juicy, smoky, and tender while still having good chew and structure to it. The salad was a good contrast to the heavier nature of the beef. The bread was fluffy and light-- perfect to soak up the sauces from the beef. The basmati rice was also lightly seasoned and complemented the other flavors on the dish well. 3.5/5. The potato bolani ($9.99) can definitely serve as a main dish given its size-- its about the size of a small size pizza, and is cut into individual pieces that are 4" x 4", stuffed full of dense and perfectly spiced and cooked (not too mushy, not too hard) potato filling. I appreciated how they kept the outside crispy as well, while making sure the entire dish was not too oily. I would stick to half size next time given how big this dish is. This was very tasty with the yogurt and cilantro dipping sauces. The yogurt sauce is cool and tangy, while the cilantro sauce gives it a herby sort of flavor. I love potatoes, so 4/5, especially given that portion size. We did not have a wait on Saturday at 11am, but the restaurant did fill up quickly around lunch! I went to the takeout side and they only take cash but the worker was kind enough to walk me over to the nearest ATM! Beef/chicken combo plate: Let me tell you, that first bite was mouthwatering. The plate provides a cucumber salad, potato side, along with rice, bread, and your meat. The meat was so tender and juicy! As soon as I bit into I could taste all the flavor and it was to die for. WOW. I want it just thinking about it! The rice wasn't dry at all and went well with the meat. It's safe to say I ate the whole plate. Countdown to Yelp 100 Challenge - Review #99 Located on Fremont St, North East of Mowry Ave in Fremont. My Afghani friend who recently moved here, told me that this section of Fremont has the highest concentration of Afghani restaurants in No CA. He also reminded me that Afghanis invented kabob. After the meal, there was no denying which culture has the best kabob. My friend wanted me to sample a lot of the cuisine, so we ordered heavy. For appetizers, we ordered the Pakaura ($5 - potato fritters thinly sliced potatoes dipped in a besan flour batter, deep-fried and served with cilantro chutney), and Bodinjon ($5 - roasted eggplant topped with garlic yogurt, dry mint and served with Afghan bread). For our entrees we ordered the Combination Kabob: Chicken, Beef & Chapli ($15.95 - Chapli is beef patties mixed with green onion, eggs, and other Afghan seasoning, grilled until cooked thoroughly - It's a tad spicy), and the Lamb Kabob ($12.95 - charbroiled lamb shish kabob marinated with special seasoning). We both asked for "brown" rice - basmati rice seasoned w/ saffron and cardamom. The food was effin bomb!!! Our mouths were watering from the smell of the aromatic food coming from the small open kitchen behind where we sat. Before the appetizers arrived, we were given a small portion of garbanzo and potato salad. The dish was a nice way to start the procession of aromatic and savory food to come. The Pakaura w/ chutney was crispy and a perfect way to start the meal. It was light and not greasy. In addition, the chutney had a nice kick to it. The bodinjon was so fresh and tasty. My friend recommended I save some for later to put on my rice: Both 5 Stars. The kabob was outstanding!!! The beef, chicken and lamb were super moist and tender, and all went well w/ the chutney and bread. The Chapli was also excellent. It was kind of like a spicier version of a "Joe's Special" (no pun intended), you might find at an old school Italian restaurant. Lastly, the rice was fantastic. It was moist and aromatic from the spices. I am glad I had hot tea so it didn't compete w/ all the fantastic flavors from the food: All 5 Stars. The place was packed on a Wed night. In addition to Middle Eastern clientele, there were Caucasians, Azns and Middle Easterners w/ Azn features - Not unlike what you might find in Afghanistan: 5 Stars for ambiance. The service was also excellent. In addition to being super cute, the waitress was super nice and efficient (she was the only waitress). The server was super friendly and nice, and the food came out quickly: 5 Stars. I have had kabob at many Middle Eastern restaurants, and the kabob here was the best. This place needs to be on every bucket list known to man. I was afraid to finish my meal after my initial bite because I didn't want the wonderful meal to end. I was having lunch w/ my kids and my good friend, Anna D. whom I've met through Yelp. We've known each other for years and I'm thankful we try to meet every so often to talk. They open at noon but I believe they start seating people 5-10 minutes prior to opening. If you come after 12:30, there will be a wait. You can count on it. This place isn't overhyped; the great reviews and the line is purely justified after you have tried any of their dishes. We started off w/ a half an order of potato bolani. It was huge for a half order. It was so good. I could have easily made that my main entree but that would be terrible because everything that we ordered was so good; lamb kebab, chicken kebab, and combination kebab (chicken and beef). The chicken, the beef, and the lamb were juicy and flavorful. I was baffled by its ability to melt in my mouth w/ each bite. The rice was fluffy and the salad was fresh and crisp. Sadly, I did not try the complimentary Afghani bread but I was at the brink of self destruction from being so full. No remorse, however. Service was great. I want to come back right meow. read more

This was my first and my last time here, after all these years of living in Fremont (born and raised). The number of Yelp reviews reflect how popular this place is; on a Sunday afternoon there was a wait for tables. I thought I was being a smart one by ordering take out, but it took about 30 minutes for my lamb special + order of bolani to come out. By minute 15 I started sobbing in the corner. I swore my stomach was eating itself, but then again I have plenty of belly fat to prevent anything like that from happening anytime soon. Unfortunately they do not do half orders of bolani for take out. So I ended up with a huge pizza box of bolani for myself (my companions wanted to eat something else). Together with the lamb special (which includes rice--white or brown, bread, some chickpea side, and a cucumber salad side), my casual Fremont lunch came out to $28. (Insert wide-eyed emoji here). I tried to ease my pain by convincing myself that it's really a ~$15 meal, as I had plenty of leftovers for lunch. I'm trying to suppress the jerk off voice in my head that's screaming, "you shoulda just went to Gaters." The food--is it worth the dollar-a-minute wait? No. But the lamb was very tender, I'll give them that. I'll try anything once; twice if I like it. That said, I tried it and I'm moving on, taking this off my bookmarks list. As far as holes in the wall go, this is very literally one: there are three tightly-squeezed tables inside, a grill, and a counter. The line lines up right to the outside because there is no other space for people to stand, and there's not much service to speak of. Even so, the food here is amazing. I came here on a night when they were obviously overwhelmed with customers; there were people crowded around the door and outside, more people were trying to squeeze in to pick up to-go orders, and the phone was ringing off the hook with no one to answer it because they couldn't even get to the customers there in person. There was one guy manning the grill, taking orders, collecting payment, and filling to-go boxes at the same time. It felt like the kabob Olympics watching him work, and while he wasn't exactly friendly or welcoming, you could tell he took his job seriously and the kabobs were his first priority. I tried the beef kabob, and I was blown away by how perfectly seasoned and cooked it was. The flavor of the beef was still fragrant and fresh, and while the spices complemented each other really well, none of them were overpowering or overdone. The smokey flavor of open flame in the grill really came through, and the slight char on the cubes of beef were just right. The meat itself was pretty lean, but amazingly not dry or stringy at all. With the bread and tangy sides served, it was simple, ethnic heaven. I tried some of my friend's chicken kabobs and chaplee, and while they were cooked well and palatable as well, I definitely prefer the beef. I also wanted to try the bolani, but the guy told me that the wait would be thirty minutes extra, and after ravenously waiting for an hour in line already, I figured I could put that off until a later date. This place is completely no-frills, and that itself has its charm. I would maybe come during off-peak hours though, as the slow cook of the meat and bolani paired with long lines is no fun. Came here for the first time based on all the reviews & I can honestly say I am very disappointed in this place. First off, service was HORRIBLE. My plus 1 & I sat there for a good 10 minutes after being seated & we finally got the menus. After looking at the menu, it took probably another 10 minutes to get our orders taken. By the time we finished eating, we waited AGAIN to get the check. By then I had ran out of patience so my plus one just paid in cash & we left. No "thank you", from anyone, nothing. Food: My plus 1 ordered the Chapli, which we both felt would've been good if it was turned into a burger lol. The spices were good, but it wasn't great. The chicken kebab was very flavorful & definitely my favorite there. However it wasn't like any kebabs you couldn't get anywhere else. We also didn't get any bread while everyone else did. This is a good place to try out Afghan cuisine. The restaurant is located on the Fremont Boulevard. There is some parking spots in the back of the restaurant but those were full so ended up parking in the neighboring street. On weekend nights the wait time is quite a while (15-20 minutes). As appetizers, we tried the baba ghanoush that come with pita bread pieces with it. The plate is cooked to perfection and is one of the best that I have tried out in other Persian/Afghan restaurants. For entrees, we ordered the Afghan specialty Chapli kabob and the Shani kabob. The Chapli kabob is an Afghan delicacy that is not found in other Mediterranenan and Persian cuisines. It's a flat kabob piece, unlike the long slender kabob piece or the small chunky pieces, of minced meat along with lots of spices. The Chapli kabob is the prime attraction of this place and I thoroughly liked it. The Shami kabob was good but I have had much better beef kabob elsewhere so I wouldn't care to recommend this or come back for more. For dessert, we tried the Firni and it was quite delicious, particularly the taste of pistachio was quite refreshing. The Bolani kachaloo (potato) pancake type of bread is sooo yummy! They give you alot, there was 3 of us and as much as we wanted to finish it, we had 1/3 remaining that I took advantage of and brought home! (reheat in oven and comes out perfect) We've been here a couple times and ordered the Murge kabob chicken which is very juicy and flavorful. Today we tried the chaplee - ground meat and it's seasoned to perfection, has a tiny kick to it and it was to my liking! Had food Coma returning to work! I swore not to eat dinner that day! (of course exception was to munch on some bolani - lol) We tried their ice cream at the restuarant, very different in flavor and texture. It's home made ice cream with rice noodles on the bottom of the dessert cup, with rose water, ice cream on top of the noodles, and ground pistachios to top. My friend described it as walking into a SPA on a spring day after having her first bite. It was very floral when you try it and it's funny b/c you can't smell how floral it is. You can only taste it..it's good in it's unique way. Resturant is a couple doors down and serves the same food with same servings and it's delicious also and take credit cards :) This spot however is tiny and is cash only.
