Dean's always has the in-season fruits that we all love! From figs, to mangoes, to papayas, to cherries, and even to the Asian pears! (They know how to please their numerous Asian customers :)) Their fruits are mostly always fresh, sometimes you just have to dig deep or open a new box if needed (Yes, very Azn thing to do indeed). Sometimes their fruits are a bit costly, but it is because they import them from various places as well as offer fresh quality. Their veggies are also very fresh and they are always placing new shipments onto their displays. Dean's also offers various selections of Indian, Italian, Spanish, etc. condiments and foods. My local go to spot for fresh produce hands down... Fresh everything! I can always count on them to have italian eggplant (which I love). Plenty of seasonal fruits and veggies. Love the fact that they have some of the more exotic stuff... Like this time they had dragon fruit. Last time they had fresh guava and lychees... I usually come here for my weekly fruits and veggies shopping. Produce is fresh and clean. Same with the fruits as well. They do have middle eastern products as well (cheese, olive oil, breads, etc...) This is the only place where I buy my honey from as well! Once in a blue moon, they do have rare tropical fruits which I am very lucky to find. Price is reasonable as well. Wish the store was a little bit more cleaner though.. read more

This is my number one place for produce. It's fresh, there's a great variety, did I say it is FRESH? It's a great neighborhood place and the prices are more than reasonable. There's also a great collection of Asian, Greek, and various European products here. The tofu floats in clear water in bins next to the french feta, under the shelves of taramasolata and tzatziki and fillo dough, and across from bulgarian eggplant spread and dolmas. I love this place and from the looks of it, I'm not the only one. It's great to have a locally owned store to support, with great prices and incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables. I honestly walk in and every time I am able to find something where I find the price and quality just so unbelievable I have to stop acting too excited before the other patrons are onto me and grab the great produce before I can get to it. That sounds pretty selfish huh? Sometimes my greed gets the better of me. The aisles are big but somehow Dean's is able to pack in a whole bunch of different varieties of fruits and vegetables (especially tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples). The only thing that makes the aisles difficult to navigate through is the crowd! No matter what time of day you go, there are always customers in the store. But that's a good thing because that means faster turnaround for all of us. If fruits and veggies aren't your thing, they also have lots of more ethnic (and exotic) offerings like foreign chocolate (Kinder which I guess has become more run of the mill and some Swiss chocolates I've only seen people bring back from Switzerland), Middle Eastern(?)/Greek(?) delicacies like baklava and other things I don't know the name of, olive oils, bottles of honey, etc. They also have a lot of prepackaged goodies like trail mixes, nut mixes, banana chips, etc. It reminds me of one of my favorite produce markets in Philadelphia during my two year stint there. The Asian ladies doing the checkout are pretty nice and very efficient. They check you out faster than you can whip out your wallet. And it's awesome that they know the codes like the back of their hands so you never have to wait for them to look it up in a big book. And can we say Club Med?! They are always bumping some bangin' Euro music that just makes me want to travel somewhere with a beach and a pina colada. read more

Rotting fruit is the hallmark of a good produce store. "But Emily T., how is that so?" In a nutshell, fruits grow sweeter with age and hanging out with old fruit make young fruits age quicker - that's why moldy fruit is sometimes a good thing because it is a good indicator that sweeter fruit is around. While your local mega-mart is sterile like a donkey how often do you pick a tasty piece of fruit from their pristine piles? Not often, huh? Anyway, I digress. Keeping your market with only "fresh" produce is a difficult chore and while Dean's isn't as well kept as say, Whole Foods, they provide the same quality produce and dairy for a cheaper price. I have never walked out of Dean's disappointed with my picks. My favorites? Apples of any and every variety - pink ladies, gala, Fuji, honeygold, braeburn. Hearty leafy greens like kale and dandelion greens. Ritter Sport and Kinder eggs. Local grains and breads. AN OLIVE BAR. Locally pressed tofu. The list could continue on forever. If your idea of cooking is akin to Rachel Ray and any annoying authority on the Food Network I would strongly suggest that you just stick with the supermart. Okay, this is my third review on Dean's, and I have to jump it up a half-star or more. First of all, things have changed since the store expanded space and the last time I visited, when there was the olive bar and olive oil section, as well as an expanded legume section and new freezer cases. NOW, there's even more stock lining up the shelves of amazing variety. Everything you want and more in one store. Fresh nuts, flat breads, butters and jams from Europe at an amazing price, and the spices, condiments and herbs you need to cover a global range of cuisines. Vasili really has a feel for the diversity of his customers and it shows. He also has beautifully eclectic flair for buying produce. Last weekend, I found forelle pears for the first time. I never knew they existed here in the US, and only saw them in food encyclopedias. Turns out, these were a perfect pear type for baking into dessert tarts. Let's just say, after trying them out, the response was such that I'm coming back for more! Dean's is a veritable foodie mecca. But I tend to be of the seasonal and local persuasion and think that it would benefit everyone if Dean's could emphasize what is local and what is in season in a more legible fashion. By no means do i think we shouldn't have papayas and rasberries year-round- only that we would be doing the world a great serice by encouraging informed decisions regarding produce thereby reducing costs )cold storage and transportation), saving energy, and eating what's as fresh as possible. I am so glad I have randomly checked out this place. I didn't know it was a Greek place. Most important reason I like this place, is they carry quinces, for $1/lbs. Also, I asked the owner's mother in-law Maria and they carry can erik (the green crunchy sour plums you eat salted) in the spring. Those two things alone will bring me back here. They have a large selection of good looking produce. They seemed mostly conventional. They had "natural" grapes, Maria said that means not sprayed. They have a large selection of diary from the Middle East as well as grains and legumes. You can usually find these in Arabic markets, as well, though. Last but not least, they were very friendly. This place is called Dean's Produce... and it is the best source of produce in the area. Kinda that small time atmosphere with lotsa great fruits and veggies crammed into an elbow room only store front. Prices are reasonable (season permitting). Quality is way up there. Selection is thoroughly acceptable. And added bonus: lots of little surprises to distract you and make you late for whatever else you need to do. Plus! They carry Cruz de Malta loose leaf yerba in the event you run out and need some in a pinch. read more

The price isn't all that cheap like these other folks are saying. I frequent Mexicana Produce in San Bruno and I've found some items easily a dollar less a lb. That said, the fruits that are in season seem to be reasonable. They had mangos at a dollar each and strawberries/blueberries at about $2 a lb. That's pretty fair I'd say. Saving gas on the drive to San Bruno was part of the allure of coming here too. If I'm picking up a few things, it makes all the sense in the world to come here. Pretty decent selection and they have a wide variety of odd items you can't find anywhere else. This is a little market packed with lots of unique items! Last time I was here they had fresh dates. It was the first time I had seen that, so I bought some and they were delicious. They also had yellow kiwi and a variety of fresh figs. Another thing I like is the imported snacks. They have goodies from lots of different countries. I picked up some Kinder chocolates that I have only seen in Europe. Their prices are really reasonable especially since they have some rare items! Um, am I missing something here?? I had high expectations for this location, given the # of reviews... but compared to its San Mateo counterpart, it just really doesn't stand up to par. First of all, their produce options are very limited (where were the avocados??), and they seem to place more of an emphasis on their internationally imported items like canned goods and whatnots. Also, the produce doesn't look very clean and the store itself isn't organized as nicely. Everything here just looks so drab and unclean -- not what I expected at all. I now trek down to San Mateo just to visit that location, as it is MUCH cleaner and the selection of produce is way better/fresher. read more

It is true that their prices are a little more than the other produce market that is in San Bruno. However, the quality of the produce is fresh, Afghani flat breads & pita breads are the best, fuji apples are delicious, I could go on and on. Fresh Dates are seasonal and are available at this market in August & September only of each year. Best time to shop is early mornings as you will be able to park right in front of the store. I've been shopping for veggies here for years and years (even before the current owner took over. They offer vegetables, fruits and sundry small grocery items such as canned goods, oils, sweets, breads, etc. For a small store, the selection is wide and the quality is superior, especially when compared to places like Safeway and Lucky, while the prices are mostly fair and reasonable. Prices have taken some ticks upwards in the last couple of years but in general, have stayed within reason when compared against the local competition. Don't forget to look in the boxes below the garlic/ginger bins at the back of the store where they package and sell the food that is bruised or starting to spoil (but still fine for eating) for $1.00/bag. read more

They also have an "olive bar" which is cool if you like olives. But what's really cool is that they stock a lot of ethnic food products. Really. Are you a caper connoisseur? They have at least 5 different brands in various sizes (from teeny tiny to COSTCO size)... in case you want that super rare brand you loved from Greece/middle east etc. Do you make your own hummus? Well, they have 5 different brands of tahini for you to choose from. Need phyllo dough? They've got it. Do you use honey instead of sugar? Well, they stock 10 or more brands (NO LIES. They really do!!!) Need some cardamom? Don't pay $9-$12 across they street at Safeway! Get the pods here in a spice bag for $2. Ok, what if you need Asian stuff? They have that too! Canned bamboo shoots? Yeah. Char siu bbq sauce? Yeah. Need some Lee Kum Kee branded sauces? yeah they have that too. Want to make your own Indian curry from scratch? Yeah their spice section has you covered. Do you use grapeseed oil? Don't worry... 6 brands of that too. (I don't even know how many brands of olive oil they have...) What about junk food? According to my friend, he had one of the freshest, sweetest, and juiciest lychees bought from this market. Both of us went there hoping to find his lychees while I went to look around the store. He couldn't find any lychees, but found some apricots which at 99 cents/lbs and judging by its exterior quality, it was an excellent purchase. Of course as he was trying to buy the apricots, he asked the cashiers about the lychees which if I heard right, it was sold out almost immediately. Time to get some Cilantro for my bunny! :) yes, my bunny loves the cilantro from this place! They have a huge variety of produce. Lots of fruits, veggies with great prices. I'd say this store is relatively clean and neat. They try to arrange the spaces in a way that customers can shop without bumping into each other while grabbing veggies or picking oranges. Bought 2 bundles of cilantro for $.98 today. Their prices are usually reasonable, and cheaper than safeway most of the time. Usually their produce are fresh and very easy to pick. You dont have to dig very hard to find a nice orange without bruises or bananas that look too ripe! Love this place! It gets pretty crowded and often has lines when it hits evening, since that's when a lot of people get off from work and do a grocery run. read more

I think Dean's fits the bill. Lots of fresh veggies and fruits mixed in with breads and some staple items makes for a worthy grocery experience. If you are into eating healthily and consuming less processed foods, this is where you should spend that food budget. Parking can be an issue. They even had papaya from Hawaii recently and it was cheaper than the other fancy schmancy stores.
