I must confess that since this place is around-the-corner convenient for me I'm far from impartial. However, I really like this place! I ordered a special sandwich (flank steak, avocado, tomato, chipotle mayo on ciabatta) and it was gooood... minus the soggy sandwich. It has an Olive's type set up where sandwiches are pre-made and wrapped in cellophane for customers to quickly pick-up, pay and leave. Somehow, I don't remember a nearly identical special sandwich at Olive's getting soggy in the wrapper. I also had the brownie which was better and softer than most others I've had from a store (in all modesty, I make the brownies EVAR) but they look far better than they taste. I won't be buying one again. In any event the cashier was friendly, the service was quick and the food was good. This definitely not a destination spot, but damn good for a convenient/rainy day/quickie lunch. read more

When I worked in the area I was a lunch regular. They have a great salad bar with many fresh mix-in choices, both meat and veggie options. I believe the greens choices are romaine, mixed greens or spinach (small or large). Tons of dressing choices and the workers are all friendly if you're not acting like a moron...I hope no explanation is needed. Their croutons are also delicious, something about them...I've had their catering and a few of their sandwiches, thought they were above average, but not worth the price of $8-10 each. Overall it's a good option in the area but a bit pricey for what it is. Although if they get to know you they'll give you 10% off and if you ask they'll give you a great piece of multigrain bread with your salad. read more

I work in the building where Deb's is located, but that is not the only reason I eat there. I eat there because it is legitimately great food. I had the cauliflower soup yesterday and it was the best thing I have eaten in a while. Today I had the sweet potato and vegetable and it was just as tasty. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and they often remember my face. I have eaten from almost every category they have to offer: salad bar, breakfast, soups, sandwiches, hot meals, and everything has that authentic homemade taste. read more

To begin, the food at Deb's is delicious. I've eaten at many lunch spots over the years across Manhattan and Deb's stands out because it's not generic, corporate, and you know the quality of food that you're getting. I don't think it's overpriced compared to other lunch spots..for goodness sake people, this is Manhattan. You can't get out of any half decent lunch place with out shelling out almost 10 dollars. If you don't want to pay $1.50 for a piece of fruit then go to the cart down the street. The food has heart and it shows. Deb's is tucked into an active day and night spot. on a busy street leading to the Holland Tunnel. you might think to pass it up but don't. This place is great if you're looking for that quick sandwich or something with a little more variety. Their soups and salads are fresh and the service is friendly and quick. I've been getting food from Deb's for years on my way to and from soccer games on the river and the quality and service have always been good. read more

Deb's on Varick is a wonderful place to get lunch and they also handle catering for any function you can imagine. They even have a High Tea menu. My favorite thing to eat for lunch is the salmon burger, but they have an endless amount of delicious food. More importantly, if you go for lunch you can most likely run in to Deb, who is very interesting to speak with and really cares about the food she serves. While the food can seem a bit pricey, the portions are generous and everything tastes homemade. I would highly recommend squeezing in even if it is crowded--if they are featuring the salmon burgers! read more

My favorite place to eat when stepping out to lunch for a quick bite. I usually get the combo meal with a sandwich (barbecue and chicken with bacon and other trimmings) and soup (the minestrone's awesome!) and have not once, in my many trips there, had a bad experience. Granted, when I say experience, I mean meal. It isn't as if the place offers anything in the way of fine dining, with just a counter by the window for eating and a sparse amount of floor space for everything else. Nonetheless, this place, while not offering sandwiches for 10 cents a piece, reminds me of what small, independent food stands looked like back in the 30s, before everything became franchised out and homogenized. Went in around 11:30 for an early lunch, no one was there at all. Despite the fact that there were at least 6 people behind the counter, my sandwich still wasn't ready 15 mins later. What the hell takes 15 mins to slap a few items on a bun and wrap it up? What's worse than poor, slow service when all you order is a sandwich? When that sandwich is the 'special of the day' and sucks. The sandwich was terrible, soggy and just gross tasting. And what's even worse than a crappy sandwich that you wait that long for? The food is good here but the experience / price is so frustrating. As others have mentioned, the prices are not consistent and you get charged a different amount every time! Not only that but they jacked up the prices after a recent "renovation" (addition of subway tiles to the walls)...$9 for an egg white omelet w 3 toppings? On top of the pricing issue (and it is a big issue), they frequently mess up orders and are incredibly slow. I have tried so hard to like this place as it's close to work but the high price and frustrating process are making it a no-go. read more

This place is a joke. The food is decent at best, but it's WAY overpriced and the service there is the worst. I've never has to wait more than 1 minute to get a to-go coffee in NYC, the two or three times I was running late and had to stop at this place (it's in my building) I was there a solid 5 minutes AFTER ordering my coffee. The staff spends most of their time chatting with each other, not helping people. This place probably wouldn't be so bad if there weren't 30 other (better) places within 4 blocks. read more

On many occasions when I have had meetings downtown, Deb's is always where I pop in to pick up coffee and treats for my clients. The people who work there are lovely, and the cookies are hard to say no to! They also have some great salads that I have taken to-go and have always enjoyed.
