This is a top notch, first class restaurant all the way. This was my second visit to the Deep Water Grille and both were excellent. This is an upscale casual eatery that specializes in regional cuisine as well as a first class offering with beers brewed on site. My meal this evening started with a Clam Chowder with a twist - instead of potatoes, the chowder contained wild rice. It was an interesting twist that added a savoryness that almost overtook the clams, but yet still succeeded. The main course was the Seared Ruby Red Yellowfin Tuna Steak served on top of a squash risotto with grilled asparagus and a saffron cream sauce. The presentation was just fantastic. It was so artful that I was reluctant to break it up. I do not like underdone tuna, and my piece was cooked precisely to my order. The tuna was just lightly seasoned, which allowed you to control the flavor by how you combined it with the sauce and the risotto. The way in which these flavors interacted was something you rarely experience in a meal. I do not eat dessert when on the road, but if they get their pies and cakes from the renowned Ashland Bakery down the street, it's bound to be special. read more

I have eaten at the Deep Water Grille a handful of times over the last couple of years, and quite enjoy it. I strongly recommend their jambalaya, a north woods take on jambalaya using wild rice which has a bit of fire. The turkey and wild rice soup is also excellent. I know I have tried other entrees in the past (as well as people I have been with have had a variety of things) and all seemed fairly good, but the jambalaya is a stand out for me. The beer offerings run the gamut, and they have about a half dozen on tap at a time. At least currently, this includes a barley wine. The staff has treated us well each time we have gone, but on our most recent visit they treated our group (which might have been a tad annoying) great. I couldn't speak more highly of the bartender, hostess, and waitress that served our group. read more

Ate there while in vacation to the north woods. Was pleased with the beer selection and wanted to try the coffee mint stout but didn't have anyone else to drink it with so I passed. The food was ok but not great. I had the Cajun broiled whitefish. It was fresh that much was for sure but other than that it was bland and a little over cooked. I expected a spicy bite or some salt or something when eating the fish but got nothing. The whitefish is bland at baseline so I didn't expect much from the fish itself but was saddened when the dish sorta fell flat. That being said I got a side of the sweet potato fries. They were wonderful! Salty crispy but fluffy and sweet. They were the crown jewel of the meal and if I got back up there would order them again and again! No dessert this time though I know my fiancée would love the chocolate lava cake. read more

Deep Water Grille is top notch! I have been here 3 other times and it was good, but tonight out waitress and the manager made it GREAT! I initially came in with a bad mood, and the waitress was great! I was initially hesitant as we were seated in the loft(and honestly I didn't want to be here). Our waitress, Jenny Maveeto, was the best ever and was super patient (even though I waited at least 20 minutes to order because I didn't really want to be here initially) She made the perfect recommendations and was pleasant despite my indecisiveness. I first ordered a cucumber mint gimlet. Then dinner (my husband got the prime rib and i got the walleye) They were both incredible. The manager (Adam) who stopped to make sure everything was top notch was also incredible!!! He was so friendly. No one seemed rushed or irritated (which I really appreciated). After hearing of this local brewhouse we came here one recent evening for dinner. We were cheerfully greeted and shown upstairs to a table. Our waitress was helpful with our beer selection and brought us each a sample before we committed to a full glass. It being a cool, rainy evening, I wanted to try their "chicken wild rice soup with mushrooms" and I ordered the whitefish sandwich, broiled, along with the recommended barbeque-seasoned waffle fries. The soup came out first and the lightly creamy base was perfect for me. I found that the flavor of the soup was more of a "cream of mushroom with some cubes of chicken and some wild rice" than a "chicken wild rice with mushrooms". Whatever, I enjoyed it. The fish was served in a nicely soft hoagie bun with some thin, pale tomato slices and a healthy pile of raw sliced red onion (most of which I removed because of its strong flavor). Food is very good and the beer is absolutely tremendous. We split the appetizer special of the night (poblano pepper stuffed with chorizo and manchego cheese and covered in a red mole sauce) and easily could have made a meal out of that alone. The meal itself was good, but nothing significantly unique or special. (Except for the asparagus spears with the pork chop. They were done extremely well.) This place was great. It was our last stop in Ashland and we had to check out the brewery. The Pumpkin Ale was amazing. I wish I would have taken a growler home with me, since they weren't yet selling it in the local stores. We did take home a growler of the Nut Brown ale. Not only was the beer great, but our meals were fantastic. We had the crap dip crostini to start, and the vegetable enchiladas and the grilled salmon with shrimp ravioli for our entrees. Very, very mediocre food. Was in town for a month for work and are here a lot because they serve later than most places. Food was never better than just ok. Tina the bartender was terrible, you could overheat her talking bad about other coworkers even though they seemed to actually do their job where she just talked like she did hers. So we were originally excited that there was a brew pub in this area... When we came here it looked as though there are 3 different offerings. The first one looked as though that's where the early dinner goers like to dine. The middle one was a bar that offered the food from both. The third offered mainly burgers and pubfare- and the lady in the third restaurant was super nice explaining the different areas, i now wish we would have stayed there. We went with the middle section and were created with essentially a stare from the bartender/server guy... A hello or welcome would have been nice. And no, I didn't know that there is another list in the back corner on the wall of the beers you currently offer and that the beer list just listed all the beers you make. It was pretty odd that each time he would come to our table he would just stare at us and not say anything- or you know, ask if we have any questions or are ready to order.... Etc. Nope, not a peep. Though, he enjoyed loudly throwing the empty beer bottles into recycling... But I just may have been taking more notice because I was irritated with the lack of service. There was another bartender/server there with a beard who was friendly and came up to us asking if we enjoyed dinner. Thank you for speaking new beard guy! After we got our check the original blonde server guy with glasses finally asked us how we liked our food, but then we waited for over 15 minutes before finally coming up to the bar to pay. Went here with a group of 9 people. Groups can be difficult but our waitress did a good job. I had the garlic pesto caesar salad with grilled chicken. The dressing was impressive. It tasted kind of like a mix between caesar and creamy garlic. Their beers are also good. Not sure why this place is rated so high? Walked in on a Friday afternoon and seated right away. Place was dark, dingy and smelled like old people. Beer menu was tiny, and no options for gluten free beer. Server had never heard of celiac disease. Asked if they had gluten free menu which they did have but when I looked at it it stated at the top, " we cannot guarantee foods are gf". When I told the server we'd have to find another place to eat he was rude. We decided on a Mexican food place which was super good(we're from AZ so that's saying a lot)!! We were staying in Ashland, and the craving for hot wings hit hard. My wife being from Ashland, was a fan of Deepwater, and she called and ordered 'the hottest ya got' wings. When we arrived, the server came out of the kitchen coughing from the pepper aroma in the kitchen from making these morsels. 'You ordered the Deadly Hot Wings?' she said, with a look that was both comical and concerned at the same time. 'Yep. I'm the idiot.' I was intrigued at her implication of the heat to come, yet ready for disappointment as nobody's wings are as hot as they claim. I normally have to boost the wings at home with sauce from other clandestine sources. I left excited after a warning from the hostess regarding the heat, and was told that the gentleman who made the wings was a 'Wizard with spices.' We had to crack the windows on the way to our hotel because the spice coming from the bag was making our eyes water. My pending disappointment seemed to be unfounded with this wonderful smell coming from the paper bag on the back seat. Back at the hotel, I ripped into the 10 generous pieces with a cold beer at the ready. The flavor and texture was incredible, but in 10 minutes, after 4 pieces, the heat came and it did not relent for what turned out to be 40 minutes from the last bite. I asked my wife if she would like some. She just slowly shook her head, eyeing me curiously. So naturally, I decided to plow through 2 more drummies. The heat seems to lessen as long as you keep eating, was the mantra I told myself. That theory was tossed out on wing number 6, as the spices kept doing the wonderful thing they do. My wife asked if I was o.k., as sweat was starting to form and run down my forehead, and I was making strange sounds. I assured her I was, and said that the Wizard of Spice renewed my faith in the human race. I plowed through the rest the next evening having dreamt of them the night before. I even bought a cooler to bring them back in. In conclusion, the wings are as advertised, and I have to figure out how the Wizard of Spice works his alchemy because Ashland is a 4 hour drive from home. read more

What's good here? + The wings are good, although I sometimes find them undercooked; ask them for well done. Whiskey wings are good, and these are solid Buffalo wings. + The Garlic Caesar Salad is unique; it's definitely not a "traditional" Caesar salad, but it has great flavor. + The burgers are good as well. They have a nice char to them, and are cooked to order, which is pretty rare in N. Wisconsin. There's also a wide variety of toppings. The ridiculously titled "Curd Burgler" is surprisingly good, although I like the classic back alley burger. The quality of the burgers says to me highly experienced and competent kitchen staff. You give them good ingredients, and they know what they're doing. After that, less good. Most of the ingredients seem to be Sysco, and one beautiful blonde waitress aside, some of the service could be better. I imaging this is an issue of inept management. Take, for example, the DWG's rules on ordering--i.e. the most asinine menu system in town: If you face the building, there are technically three different "restaurants," although people, including servers, seems to move fluidly between them all. - On the left is "The Alley," named for the alley it was built on. - In the middle is the South Shore Brewery (essentially the bar). - On the right is the Deepwater Grille, which also has a bar, but more extensive menu. Got that?: Alley (A), South Shore Brewery (SSB), and the Deepwater Grille (DWG). Now, each of these sections has its own menu. And on each of these menus, there are many of the same items. - If you sit in the SSB, you can order Burgers from the Alley or entrees from the DWG, but this section has the least amount of tables. - If you're in the DWG, you can order only from the DWG or the SSB (these menus seem identical). - If you're in the Alley, you can order from the Alley menu, and some of the items from SSB, but not the DWG (even though these menus seem identical). - If you want a menu item from, say, the SSB, servers will sometimes refuse to get it for you, but suggest that you get it yourself. (All of these kitchens are connected, BTW.) In short, where you sit dictates the food you can order. The DWG now offers delivery, so I suggest that if you are refused an item, just whip out your cell phone and order delivery to the next bar. This place used to be a lot better.
