Lately, my family has had a bad run with deliveries/take out meals around town. Tonight, however, we were all pleasantly surprised. We had a larger order, and the woman who took it down was very helpful. When I went to pick it up, I brought my daughter with. The hostess was so nice that she offered to bring my order to my car (My daughter is young enough that I have to carry her) and did so with a smile. The food itself had turned a bit cold, but I blame myself for that (arriving a bit passed the time the hostess gave me). The taste was still great, though! This place does service and food really well. We stopped by for lunch on our "Lake superior southern shore trip." Lovely draft beer -Nut brown and APA. I had the broiled whitefish sandwich, well seasoned, nice soft bread, and delicious homemade tartar sauce. It was Excellent. My husband had the special of the day- Reuben. It was excellent as well. My son had the meat, cheese and fruit platter which was a refreshing change from most kids menus, and it was a huge spread which he had for lunch the next day too. I wish we had a place like this in La Crosse. Great beer, friendly service, excellent food. What more can you ask for. read more

Not from the Ashland area I had asked at the hotel for recommendation. After driving for 6 hours my son and I were hungry and thirsty. After waiting about 5-10 minutes our server finally came for drink order, restaurant was busy I get that. Both my son and I asked for regular cokes, what we got was syrup with no carbonation. Our appetizer had arrived which was spicy and neither of is had anything we could drink. Finally got attention of a server walking past, she apologized and returned with better drinks. Our food arrived...I had ordered the $22 ribeye with carmelized onions and mushrooms, with garlic mashed potatoes as a side. It was a pile of potatoes with the the steak on top...the onions and mushrooms were a deep dark brown pool of grease swimming over the top of it all...really couldn't even make out the steak it was so dark. By this point we were in need of another round of drinks...we were back to syrup over ice. I asked for water at this point and the main hostess came over and told them to get us cans of soda. We had carbonation finally but there was no flavor at all to whatever can of cola they brought us. Long story short after only 5 bites I ended up getting up 3 times during the night popping rolaids due to the horrible heartburn I had and my son spent the next hours throwing up. read more

Stopped here for lunch with my husband and two kids. Atmosphere was family friendly. My husband had the Big Pig and it was a hearty portion of meat with a hint of barbecue sauce. I had the Thai Salmon Salad and it was a large salad with plenty of cabbage, green onions, cashews, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers over the mixed greens with a large portion of salmon. Our two kids, ages 3 and 6, each had the chicken strips from the kids menu and each serving had 3 very large chicken strips (more like breaded chicken breasts) and could have easily split one serving. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and decided to sit at the bar so I could watch some baseball. It's a very attractive bar - and spacious, two-level restaurant - w/ lots of wood and brass. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the free popcorn made for a nice appetizer for the whitefish filet I ordered. It was perfectly cooked and simply seasoned w/ salt, pepper, and oil, which allowed its great fresh flavor to shine thru. The rice and veggies were an excellent accompaniment, a welcome change from the usual potatoes. Because I was driving, I didn't drink any beer, but the selection offered was a good one. I'll definitely return next time I'm in the neat little town of Ashland. read more

Stopped here for lunch. Had the jerk chicken pita. It was really good. The wild rice soup was really delicious. Had the beer sampler. The Street Corner 40 Malt liquor 6.56% alc by volume was very tasty, not a strong alcohol taste like most malt liquors. Blond bitter 5.25% is an aggressively hopped pale ESB. Really good. They were out of Cream Ale. It has a hint of lavender and wood bettany according to the brewer. It is very good. Hope they have some the next time we come through Ashland. read more

Totally pleasing. Great beer, and our dinners were fantastic -- the cajun whitefish and a swordfish special, both perfectly cooked. We were there on a busy Friday night, but never felt rushed at all by our server; we had a very leisurely meal and made an evening out of it. Deep Water Grille and South Shore Brewery - one of our favorite stops when touring the South Shore - however, today they almost lost us - we were 2 tablespoons of a sample taste of mint stout from walking out. I'm still a fan but it may be awhile before I take time to drive there again - it's a 300 mile drive to visit and quite frankly my expectations for service are higher than they delivered. Not being too critical of Connie's situation - she was the bartender, server, and bus person - and I counted 26 patrons dispersed between the bar and 6 tables - too many hungry and thirsty people for one person to adequately tend to, this doesn't excuse her curt behavior when we first arrived but none-the-less, I feel we should be greeted cheerfully and respectfully like any paying customer. I believe my concern may be more with management on this day than our server, given the under staffed bar. We had the nut brown ale and the bourbon barrel mint stout - delicious as always, ahhh! this is why we like South Shore Brewery. She had the portobello mushroom flat bread and I had the Reuben - both sandwiches were excellent - I think the reuben with the stout sauerkraut and apostle island dressing ranks in my all time, top 3 reuben sandwiches - well done, our trust was beginning to be restored. I hope that this was a single occasion of management miscalculating staffing needs and not a reccuring theme. Great beer, Great food, and Great service - that's what I'm looking for when I spend $45 for lunch...maybe South Shore Brewery and Deep Water Grille will deliver next time. Stopped here last summer on our way back to Ohio from visiting Wisconsin. The setup looks amazing on the inside, and the bar is awesome. The IPA I had was fantastic. Plus they had an all you can eat buffet next door that was very affordable. I think if I lived near here, i'd be more than a regular at this place! read more

Every five years we have a family reunion in Ashland and we have been at Deep Water three times and loved every minute. I ordered the Thai sweet chili salmon salad expecting a small piece of mediocre salmon and green and was blown away by a large salmon fillet on a bed of fresh greens. This was a delicious surprise and will be a must visit the next time I am in Ashland. The service and ambiance is worth the visit. read more

I had the reuben and i thought that it had way too much bread and the corned beef was really dry. But I also had I side of sweet potato fries and they were Amazing! I give this brewery one star. We travel around to diffrent states to try out diffrent breweries, and we like the ones that have reaturants to eat too. We are a family of 5. The beer was good. We tried the nut brown beer. The burgers were ok. But our biggest complaint we had the waitress we had we barley seen her. She took our order, brought our beer and food, and the check. She never came back to ask how food was.... So I had to ask another waitress to have our 8 year olds mac and cheese sent back. He went to take his first bite and said it was cold. So I touched it. And it was COLD (fresh from the fridge cold). And to me it looked like the kraft mac and cheese kind you put in microwave and put on plate. I understand luke warm food for kids. But it was cold. So we sent it back to kitchen to get warmer. 7 mins later the waitress came back with it and my 8 year old them touched it and said it was cold still. Same temp as we sent it back. It really isn't hard to check temps of food. I know kitchens have food thermometers. Wasn't a brewery that we were impressed to come back to. read more

The food here was really very good, we had the cream of wild rice with mushrooms and ham soup which was excellent and the BLT stuffed mushrooms, also very good. We also had the whitefish sandwich, which looked very good, however I have decided that I am just not a whitefish fan. I did not enjoy the sandwich, (through no fault of the restaurant) but the dill caper sauce was excellent. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. All in all a good experience although next time I would definitely try something other than the fish. read more

While on vacation I checked yelp and based on reviews we chose Deep Water Grille and were not disappointed. It was late for lunch but too early for dinner so we had a cup of beer cheese soup and fried cheese curds appetizer. Both were very good. We liked the atmosphere, the waitress was friendly and efficient so we decided to come back later for dinner. My husband had a filet with mushrooms which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the crab stuffed bacon wrapped shrimp. They were excellent, although the saffron rice with pickled red onions might be an acquired taste. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

This place is fantastic! Best meal I've had in a restaurant all year. First - THE BEER! My husband ordered the nut brown ale and it is to die for! And we are not fans of darker beer at all normally. I had the Northern Lights which was OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing, smooth, light with a hint of lavender. I went and bought 3 cases of it across the street at the liquor store before we went home to Minnesota the next day. We had the roasted red pepper spinach artichoke dip. Very very good. I loved that they offered veggies with it to dip in. I've never seen my 5 year old scarf down veggies the way she did with that dip. That says something for sure! Now onto the entrees... we both ordered the whitefish. I had cajun grilled which was fantastic and NOT spicy at all, just flavorful. My husband had the broiled. It was excellent too. My 5 year old loved it as well. The dill type tartar sauce they serve with the fish is also fantastic. I can't believe this place has any bad reviews, because honestly I thought it was TOP NOTCH. Cute atmosphere too, and very unassuming from the outside, since it just looks like an old building. If we ever come back to Ashland again, there is no way we could eat anywhere but here. And I am going to be very sad when my stash of beer runs out... :) read more
