"I already had pizza this week...can we not do Delfina?" I told me friend that when she offered Pizzeria Delfina up as a spot for dinner. I eventually gave in, and boy was a I glad I did. She was running late, and the staff was super friendly, letting me order drinks while I stood around waiting. When my friend finally got there, I was starving. We ordered 2 pizzas and the Meatballs. First Pizza: Salsiccia! Delicious! We wanted meat and were not dissappointed by the fennel sausage. Second Pizza: Capricciosa - Special of the day...the toppings on this one were okay, not really my flavor, but was still good. And I realized I really like red sause. The Meatballs in Sugo were delicious!!! Scarfed those up in no time! The pizza crust was good, but not as flavorful as Zero Zero, but I think the consistency of the crust here was better. The toppings were also quiet delcious and sets Pizzeria Deflina apart. Oh, and the staff is amazingly nice! Very patient! read more

There's something about the tomato sauce on the margherita - it's not just sweet/tart but has an additional dimension to it. Proscuitto and arugula - savory and classic. 4 formaggi is cheesy and vegetarian friendly. The clam is a more unique one - not too fishy. I wish there were a mushroom one regularly on the menu. Aside from pizza, arancini and meatballs are worth a try. The wait can be a bit insane, and it's a small space, so avoid peak hours. You can always try take out or get the dough to go and make your own pizza at home. Still, their oven makes their crusts difficult to reproduce (thin in the center but still slightly chewy, just the right amount of doughiness.) read more

I'll admit, I didn't know the restaurant made pizza only available to-go, so I was a bit disappointed since I had a craving for pizza. We sat inside and had a great pasta meal with homemade spaghetti and gnocchi, and both were very very good! Great ambiance for a romantic occasion, and you got Bi-Rite a hundred yards away for dessert! Next time, we're getting pizza and heading to Dolores Park. This place certainly lives up to the recommendations of friends from the Bay Area who knew I would love it. First, the place is very charming but it's small, so go early, alone or expect a wait. I was lucky enough to find a seat at the counter with a kitchen view, and I loved it. The host, a New Yorker, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and I enjoyed banter with him throughout my meal. There are probably 2-3 other innovative pizza places that live up to the quality of Delfina: Mozza in Los Angeles, and flour + water nearby in San Francisco. Pizzeria Mozza always will be hands down favorite, but this was an easy rival. I loved the homemade crust -- very thin, lite and a perfect edge. The margherita pizza is outstanding, and I had to make it a little less healthy. I cannot resist fennel sausage on a menu, so I added it to the pie for good measure. It was amazing. I expected to eat half of my pizza. I ate the whole thing. Not just because it was so great, but it really was fairly lite given that I avoided eating the edges. With this said, the thing I most enjoyed was the warm olives. I have noticed that several SF restaurants are serving olives warmed, and I love it. These were served with red peppers and onions mixed in for extra flavor, and they were outstanding. The crowd is fairly young and representative of the surrounding Mission neighborhood. I keep hearing about this place, and was excited to finally try it. We (party of 3) arrived just before 7 on a Saturday night (and they don't take reservations), so we were expecting to wait, but they actually sat us almost immediately (outside at a cramped table, but there were very effective heating lamps, and the place really isn't large, so it was fine). Service was prompt and the staff were all very friendly. We shared: 1) The burrata. Tasty! But it didn't come with enough crostini for the amount of cheese. Oh well. I'll happily eat burrata by itself with a spoon, so that wasn't a huge issue. 2) The prosciutto pie (pizza). This was pretty good - particularly the prosciutto, which was high quality. It was cut erratically, though: when it came out, it was somehow only cut into two pieces (1/3 of the pizza and 2/3), which was really bizarre. How does that even happen? So we sent it back to be re-cut, and then it came back out with a normal amount of slices (6 pieces), but they were all different sizes. Still tasted good, though! 3) The Margherita pizza with added mushrooms and house-made sausage. This was really really tasty (and the sausage is great!), but a little sloppy to eat. The crust couldn't really stand up to the tomato sauce, and the cheese was sliding off everywhere. But it was delicious. read more

As the star rating says, this place is A-OK. There were some good things, and some bad things. Came here for Saturday lunch and chose a seat outside right away with no line. A small line formed after us and if you had more than 2 people, you would probably have to wait for a little bit. Anyway, down to the food. It was my first time here, and really my first time in San Fran since moving to the bay area. We ordered the margherita pizza, mozzarella app, and the burrata app. My wife and I may not use common sense sometime, and we though that the +3 next to the $10 meant that for $13, you could get both. Yea, that's not the case and we ended up spending $23 on cheese appetizers. Mostly our fault, but I think the server should have said something, unless he just think that we look like cheese people. They were both good, don't get me wrong, but that;s just a lot of dough for cheese. On top of that, it comes with two pieces of bread each, so I asked if I could have a few more slices, and he said sure. Turns out you have to pay and extra $2 for that which I wouldn't have done if I knew, but he didn't mention that to me so there's another bummer. The pizza was alright to me. I'm not really a fan of the super thin crust and it was just alright. It's about a 12 inch pizza so I took 2 pieces home to eat later. I get that this is San Fran and everything is more expensive, but we ended up spending over $50 for a meal that I feel could have been $25ish. Oh well though, you live and you learn. read more

Emeril Lagasse said on his show: "if you don't like garlic, you're a shmuck." I'm Italian--I cook with plenty of garlic. Only once have I used too much, and only once, tonight, have I eaten too much at a restaurant. We started with chicken brodo zuppa, a simple enough soup. Claims to be with arborio rice. I cook plenty of risotto and I've never seen arborio grains so skinny and long before. Probably subbed out for cheaper Carolina short grain. No excuse in my mind since it was early in the night. We then had the salsicca pizza and neopolitan meatballs. The sausage was very heavy with garlic and the pizza was very heavy on the sausage. Meanwhile, the meatball's included marinara sauce was heavy on garlic. They amplified each other oppressively. There was no other flavor. No delicate sweetness of tomato. No herb. Little cheese. Just a blast of garlic with every single bite. The meatballs just tasted bland in comparison. The only compliment I can give is that the crust on the pizza had just the right amount of char and crispness. It was almost a chore to eat this oppressively garlicky food, and I love spicy food! Strangely enough the next table over got the same pizza and were clearly complaining to the waitress about it. I couldn't hear what the issue was. The wine recommended was a dolcetto. It was also very hot from an alcohol standpoint. Very unbalanced, no flavor even when paired with food. I would have been unhappy paying $12/bottle let alone $12/glass. Probably more like a 3.5, but I'll round up. I was very impressed with the pizza at Pizzeria Delfina. We got seats at the bar and enjoyed an interesting appetizer consisting of eggplant, pine nuts, and diced onion combined with a fine balsamic dressing. Our margarhita pizza (you've got to start with the basics when evaluating pizza) arrived with a crisp bottom and chewy top, which is as it should be. The sauce and cheese were both v. good quality, making for a pretty excellent pie. The regular size (apparently 13") is big enough for two moderately hungry people. You'll need more if you're both hungry. We finished things off with a cannoli, which was excellent. We had to wait quite a while for a couple of seats at the bar, but that should be expected at a place with quality food and space for only about 16 people. The made the wait more enjoyable by getting a couple glasses of wine at the restaurant side of Defina's, which is just next door. read more

Been to Pizzeria Delfina twice and enjoyed both times. You really have to like thin crust pizza if you're going to remotely enjoy this place. The crust, I thought, was perfect... cracker thin and yet with enough body to be picked up and eaten like a thicker pie. The sides and toppings are what you'd expect from Delfina: simple, fresh, and sometimes inventive. Definitely solid all the way around. The food doesn't come cheap, but you're eating at Delfina, folks... it is what it is. So why only four stars? One word: service. While competent, most (but not all) of the people working there seem to have this air of indifference about, well, everything. Depending on where you sit, expect to be either attended to or pretty much ignored. Bizarre, considering it's, well, Delfina. Thank god I was there for the food, right? read more

Without a doubt 5 stars! I was so surprised to know they are open for lunch. One Saturday my partner and I were craving pizza. Knowing they have some of the best think crust pizza we decided to give them a shot for lunch. Well to our surprise they were open. We arrived at a great time. It was a bit after 12:00 and we sat at the little bar overlooking the kitchen. Here we had very fast service, were able to watch the action and even had some nice conversations with the people on both sides of us. In fact one guy told me about bi-rite ice creamery which we went to after our meal. We ordered the cauliflower, house made sausage, Cesar salad with green goddess dressing, pizza with anchovies (very small amt), black olives, capers and red sauce. (Just like having puttanesca on pizza). Every dish was so flavorful and fresh. We were both in heaven! We spent a total of about $40 and it was worth every dime of it! I suggest checking them out at lunch because the dinner crowd is crazy! Hats off to Delfina and all of the folks who work in this little gem near Dolores Park! read more

Among the many foods I love: eggs. pizza. anything breakfast-related. A place that combines all of these? Genius! Decided to stop by with the BF on a whim. I think my main complaint wouuld be what everyone else says - the wait is BAD because it's so small! We had the spicy cauliflower (a little cold, not memorable except for the chilies on top), pasta zucca (warm, hearty, perfect for a cold night), meatballs (nothing special or particularly noteworthy about the meatballs) and the pizza carbonara. I guess I've always been pretty daunted by the crowd of people waiting to be seated in the past, but somehow this past weekend, my friend and I managed to snag an outdoor table - thanks to the food gods. I ordered the Salsiccia (sausage) pizza and my friend got the 4 Formaggi with Prosciutto, and we split the bottle of wine. I guess I was starving because I managed to eat pretty much the whole pizza and still had room leftover for dessert - cream filled rum raisin bread. The Salciccia was very tasty. Though, I think the homemade sausage or some other part of the pizza was oily or maybe the sausage chunks were too large for the thin crust pizza because the crust was kinda soggy in the middle of the pizza. Mmmm, the fennel sausage is amaaaazing! I didn't let a single piece go to waste. Thin firm pizza, not floppy. Servers are all friendly, and this place gets pretty packed, especially after 8pm (on any night). Great lively atmosphere. $40 total (including tax/tip) for two pies. Not bad at all. Really enjoyed eating here. Absolutely great service to start off with. As for the food, I will say that the pizza is A+. Paper thin crust, and I do mean paper thin.. an array of "different" toppings (not just pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, etc.. we're talking broccoli raab, fancy mushrooms, expensive meats, etc), and quite an interesting selection of main courses and such. OK, I'm not going to lie, I didn't know what half of the stuff on the menu was. I just went here because kirk v. said I should. Either way, I'm really glad I did.. The pizza was great, the broccolli raab appetizer was delicious, but most of all.. I had the best meatballs I've ever had. I happened to be standing and waiting inside and I saw a guy eating these in a crock dish.. and when we finally sat our server told us about the special, which was a meatball calzone. I asked her about the guy eating them straight from a crock dish, and she said she could do that for me... so she did.. and wow. best meatballs ever. sorry Grandma! i will be back for those.. omg. quick tip on the pizza.. dont be afraid to crumble up some of the accompaniments they give you on top of your margherita. oregano (I think), red pepper, and fresh shaved cheese flakes. really made the pizza better. not that it was bland without, but it just made the flavors pop. also... you can get an egg on your pizza. I love this place! Cool vibe, awesome location, delish food. This place made my SF vacation even more fun than it already was. We started with the salami platter which was full of cured meats I had never even heard of, but melted in your mouth like butter. Followed by some of the best steamed mussels ever. *Which I tried to recreate at home, but they just weren't the same. And finally the amazing Salsiccia pizza. Deep Fried Sand Dabs with Aioli, $10 ( 1 stars), the sand dabs were over coated and cooked, it tasted dry and oily. 2. Cabbage and white bean soup $7 (1 stars), it was overly salty and nothing extraordinary. 3. These guys are wonderful... I am a die-hard Pizzetta 211 fan, but Delfina is right there with them.. I always order a Panna. No question about it. The flavor is literally mouth-watering good. I even ate one to myself in 10 minutes (It was an interesting situation). The folks are all pretty great down there. As with most good spots, the wait can be a bit, but have a glass of wine, mingle, and you'll be eating some Mozarella or chowing on the Tuna salad before you know it! read more

This place is a DREAM! On a Friday night we luckily did not have to wait that long for a table of 7. It was a great night and we were offered a table outside which we jumped on. Perfect place since we had 3 kids in our party. They serve up water and bread sticks right away. Yay! That occupied the kids for a bit. We ordered the tricolor salad, an octopus special, fried sole and fried aracina balls. For the pizza, we had the broccoli raab, 4 cheese and the proscuitto pie. They have a decent beer and wine list to please. Everything was delicious. I think we polished off just about everything, except a few pieces of pizza. So takeout of a margherita was the plan. Yup, pretty tasty. Thin and crisp crust with good flavor. But no, not the best I've had, not even my favorite in the Mission. We had 3 pizzas. The best one we had was the Napoletana. Honestly, the pizza was only okay. The flavour of this one was good and I would get this again. We also had the Broccoli Raab and Clam Pie. Both were a little lackluster. The most disappointing part of the meal was not the meal. It was the waiting outside in the cold and the fact that we were waiting, had our name on the board, was then told we'd be ready soon...and then another 20 minutes passed. Did I mention it was cold? Neapolitan style pizza is my favorite kind, so I was stoked to try this place on my recent trip. It is super, super tiny and my party of 5 were awkwardly squeezed in around an outdoor table, so not so great for groups, but the pizza is awesome. We started with warm olives, fried anchovies, and some fresh mozzarella, then got two pizzas to share. Great crust with nice air pockets, decent char, and the right level of chewiness - just what you want for this style of pizza. This would be a go-to lunch spot for me if I lived here. They don't offer much in the way of dessert, probably because they are located right down the block from both Tartine Bakery and Bi Rite Creamery (which is where we went for our sweet fix). read more

Recommended by Thrillest as one of the best pizza places in the Mission, so I stopped for a pie. Don't be fooled because one side of the restaurant is for pasta and the other is for pizza. I was seated within 10 minutes right in front of the window even though the eating area was small, but intimate and I would assume it gets really crowded especially during the picnic rush at Dolores park on the weekends. Ordered the Margherita Pizza and added sausage. Most of the standard pies appear to be vegetarian and meatless, but who is trying to be healthy when you are at a pizza joint. The pizza came out fresh from the oven and with a light crisp because of their thin crust. The mozzarella was stringy and cheesy and the tomato sauce tasted fresh. They offer wide variety of beers and wine, but the beers are from a can and doesn't have the same texture as drinking an ice cold one on draft. Great date spot for anyone that wants to impress their date to a hip, yet modern pizza restaurant. read more

I applied to work here, they didn't hire me. I still love this place, Annie says "Hi" everytime I'm in. I love love love the salsica. I love love love the dirty southern-italian wines. (anything from 2003 is likely to be more fruity, for you funk-aphobes). I usually skip dessert (see Naia review), but the cannoli is super yummy. The romaine salad with the hazelnuts & avocado is a MUST. Best wine moment was my jewish friend ordering a bottle of 'the tears of Christ' wine. read more

Delicious thin crust pizza... REALLY enjoyed the 4 cheese. The Margherita was also very good, but I wish it had more basil leaves. The watermelon appetizer was surprisingly peppery, I enjoyed the feta cheese that came with it but the peppers they used had me coughing. Service was kinda slow (I think we walked in during their lunch hour) but once we ordered it was efficient. In a desperate attempt to find some gourmet pizza on a Monday night ( My beloved Little Star isn't open on Mondays, and the alternatives weren't either), the beau and I decided to try Delfina's new pizza place. We had a really interesting artichoke and lemon tempura thing as an appetizer with a delish bottle of wine. We then sailed through our Nepoletina pizza and even managed to give the cannollis a try for dessert. The food was all wonderful and the presentation, staff, and atmosphere was great. I was totally 4 stars at that point. AND THEN...just as we were halfway done crunching through our dessert...it happened! THEY PUT ON AN ENTIRE MASON JENNINGS ALBUM!!! I'm sold. read more

Three words: Broccoli Raab Pizza. No I'm not crazy. Put some cooked, chopped broccoli leaves, ricotta cheese, and sun dried toms on one of the tastiest thin crusts in the Mission. Hella good. Get here early or late, because there is always a massive line. Better yet, buy a nice bottle of wine and get the take out. They'll tell you how long it'll take when you place the order. I almost hate Delfina and the Pizzeria because they wake me up at 9am on the weekends to take out their recycling. But this pizza is so good I can let it slide... read more

My first attempt to go here was met with a horde of people clamoring to get in... but this time, we were smhart (oh yeah, Boston accent rocks) and got there early. Finally some good pizza in SF! I love it out here but you west coasters really don't make a good pizza and then you charge an arm and a leg for it (cheap pizza is supposed to be... um... cheap.) But I digress... Excellent pizza... light, tasty and super-duper fresh! Not too many toppings and just the right balance between the cheese, sauce and various and sundry things. The crust was light and crispy... not a traditional pizza but damn tasty. The Heirloom tomato salad was good but for 9$ I was looking for something a little more imaginative than a tomato cut up with balsamic and olive oil drizzled over it. The service is horrendous as others have mentioned. We sat down at 5:30... placed our order at 6... at 6:30 while we watched others eat after we have order, the waitress came over and asked "what did you have again"? That's not a good sign. Anyhow, despite the less than stellar service I will be back. Hopefully it will be better than Terminator 3. read more

Let me just start by saying that I'm a native Italian raised in the bay area, and I'm currently living in the Mission. I can tell you that the pizza at Delfina curbs my homesickness for true Italian pizzerie more than any place I've tried in San Francisco, or probably California for that matter. The crust is absolutely correct. I won't use "authentic" to describe it, because I think that would make it sound like an imitation of something. This is the real wood-fired deal. I've eaten here 4 or 5 times now, and have never been disappointed. One time, I did wish I could have more anchovies on what I think is a phenomenal Napoletana, but then I learned to just ask. The margherita is also excellent. I also like A-16, but I prefer this place for the creativity, variety, and the daily specials. By all means, try the salumi. Their home-cured meats absolutely kick ass. Between these meats and the occasional appearance of an amatriciana pizza on the menu, pork lovers will be on a cloud. Try the sardines in saor, too, if you're a fish person and they're on the menu. Warning: you will probably have to wait a LONG time to be seated... But, they'll serve you drinks right on the sidewalk while you wait. Ultimately, it's worth the wait. Believe me. read more

Delfina's pizzas are not your average Americanized pizzas. They are super thin, lightly dressed with cheese and toppings. I hear these pizzas are pretty close to the pizzas on the motherland. Never been to Italy so I can't confirm. Regardless, these pizzas are very delicious. Delfina's menu has about 6 or 7 different kinds to choose from. In addition their salads and roasted cauliflower are all very tasty. Prices are about $10-12 for a pizza. But the size is not big and I think 1 person can eat about 1 pie. read more

The only thing wrong with Delfina's Pizzeria is the guaranteed 45-minute wait for a table. Pizza is 5 stars. Service is fantastic. Atmosphere is a lot of fun. And during the 45-minute wait, I'd recommend ordering a bottle of wine or three, to delight in while inhaling the good scents from the delicious food. I highly recommend the spicy cauliflower. And the pizza with sausage and red onions. De-lish! read more

So I was hanging w/ my friend Sta last friday and we stopped off here to grab a bite to eat for a late lunch. We were actually seated right away, so I guess i didn't experience what others have. We ordered the plain cheese pizza. meatballs, beer and lemonade and dessert. The meatballs were very tasty. Nice blend of spices and the texture of the meat was excellent. I'm not sure what kind of cheese they used for the pizza, but I loved the thin crust. I was disappointed when they ran out of lemonade. but overall this place gets 4 stars. This place has great service. Everyone is very friendly. I do recommend drinking when you are waiting for your food. This place I will be returning to again. hopefully soon. read more
