This is an extremely old school restaurant...which I think is great. It's a big local hangout and the people are really friendly. The pizza is good, Italian style. The Monstah pizza is popular with the kids. I actually like the sandwiches and dinners more than the pizza. However, I wish their pasta dishes were a little more consistent in the way they are made......but they're still great. read more

I've lived around the corner from this place for 27 out of my 33 years of life, and had only been here twice, when i was young. Just remembered really salty pizza, and we are pizza snobs in our house - yes, we've driven to Provincetown pretty much just to get a Spirtus pizza. It's a problem. About half a year ago, my huz and I decided to give it another shot after reading a good review, and hot damn! Amazing pizza. The crust is better than average - not the best, but a perfectly good thin crust. It's the toppings that really shine. Order the Napoli [proscuitto, fresh mozz, fresh basil and tomatoes] or one of the special pizzas. The fresh mozz is so creamy and lovely, and the proscuitto is super tasty and plentiful and fairly lean. Our favorite is the Napoli pizza w/ hot vinegar peppers added. We've even just gotten a basic pizza with garlic on top, and it was ridiculously good if you like garlic. The pasta is pretty comforty too [esp. the naughty chicken pesto creamy bowties of DOOM]. Mind you, the pasta can be a little overcooked, but the sauces make up for it. But really, the pizza and the "gourmet antipasto" are the things to come for. This isn't a fancy place, but everything is well done, and dirt cheap to boot. I'm not a beer gal, but the beer selection seems pretty massive for a little local place. Jeez, what a dump. Should've known we were in for trouble when we stepped across the threshold and were told to seat ourselves and saw that every single empty table was filthy with used paper plates and napkins. Ugh. We soldiered on though, since the rep of this place was pretty solid. We ordered beers, which came back right away. We then ordered pizza, and waited. And waited and waited. We figured well, perfection takes time. Not so. After 40 min we had to flag down the elusive waitress, who seemed to vanish into thin air for long stretches. She admitted she just put our order in...40 minutes after she'd taken it. Didn't offer to comp our meal, didn't apologize, nothing more than a shrug. We calmly stood and strode out, heads held high and unwavering, and never gave them a dime (she did ever so graciously say we'd get our beers for free). Effing Weymouth, man...what are you going to do. Ignorant, insular, rundown, supremely dickish and white trash to the core... In some way, Denly Gardens is the perfect synechdoche of the town itself and vise versa.Way to lose a customer for life. read more

My first counsel if you do decide to come here is patience. There is a fair amount of truth to many of the reviews about service. It is both exceptional slow and exceptional pleasant. So if you are not in a hurry or stressed from the week then by all means think about eating here. Founded in 1933 it appears that they haven't changed a thing since the day it opened. Charming to some; a dump to others. Personally I think the day they try to "improve" this place will be the beginning of the end. I love the old wood booths, the wood paneling and the general live in look. A+ Service is super friendly if ungodly slow. The slow had to do with one waitress initially handling all the booths, take out order, the phones, the bar and damn near anything else that needed doing. A second waitress sped up the works. A- / B+ Their clam pizza was terrific as was their mozzarella appetizer. They have a vast beer selection at decent prices. A If you are not from the area plug this one into your Google Map to find. Where do I start? I sat down at this restaurant because it was the first thing within eyeshot. Big, Fat, Mistake. I sat down and ordered the gourmet antipasto and a soda. As my waiter walked away, he let out a fart. A LOUD one at that! Unacceptable! I let it go, and my food soon arrived. I was horrified - the pasta had been assembled into a swastika and the word "FAG" was written in tomato sauce on my plate presumably due to my t-shirt celebrating Pride Month. When my 100% lactose-intolerant bf actually requests pizza, albeit cheeseless, it's one of those events that happen less often than a blue moon, so I jumped on it. After looking through chowhound for a reccomendation on good pizza places (it's hard to please this former NYer when it comes to pizza) around Quincy, Braintree and Weymouth, I finally settled on Denly. I've got to say, the second we walked into this place we were smitten. It's so 70s rec room beer hall without that fake feel that so many places attempt to recreate. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere on a residential street. It definitely has a cooleness about it that it doesn't intend to have. We both ordered separate large pies, mine with cheese, oil, garlic, basil and tomatoes; his with no cheese and a variety of ingredients. I must say it was just mediocre. The cheese wasn't stretchy the way it's supposed to be. I know it was a blend of two cheeses, but one was mozz and well, pizza's supposed to be stringy. The thin crust was just blah. The end, the part that's supposed to be thin and crispy was neither thin nor crispy. Don't call yourself a thin dough pizza if you're going to make it thick and overly bready. Since we each ordered a large pie, we both had some to take home for the next few days. Well, that was the best idea ever! I don't know why but pizza just seems to get better the day after. I'm also one of those people that likes cold pizza. The end of the crust was still meh but the pizza itself became fantastic. If you go, I reccomend soaking up the atmosphere, getting a beer (pretty decent bottle selection for a pizza joint), ordering a large pie and maybe having one slice. If this is what Boston considers a great bar pie (thin crust pizza served in an old timey establishment with a legendary rep) then I feel sorry for Boston. First of all, regarding the slowness of the service. Forget the excuses about being here at a busy time. We came on a Sunday night at 7:30. There were 2 occupied tables and 4 people came in for take out during the 1/2 hour we waited for the single large cheese pizza we ordered. Now if they spent that 1/2 hour hand making the thin crust, they needn't have bothered. It was barely a step above frozen pizza crust. The sauce was reminiscent of those Chef Boyardee pizza kits in the grocery store we had when I was a kid. The one bright spot was the cheese which was slightly carmelized (burnt in a good way) but I needed to pull it off the pizza and eat it separately to appreciate its flavor, the crust was so off putting. Without that cheese this would have been exactly like amusement park pizza. I wish Yelpers would refrain from bashing the town as an excuse for the poor quality of the pizza. Most great pizza was born in working class towns and down here in NJ we still have lots of exceptional pizza in working class neighborhoods. Rather, blame the food on either bad palates or owners who don't care. We spent 15 minutes eating, then asked for the check which didn't come for another 5-10 minutes because everyone who worked there was too engaged in scintillating conversations. Let's start with the positive. The service was great, and our waitress was really pleasant and attentive. Additionally, as other reviewers have commented, the restaurant is old and has a lot of character. However, that's where my positive comments end. The pizza was thin and difficult to eat. The cheese slid off every slice upon the first bite leaving you with a thin slice of crust and some sauce remaining. Left with only crust/sauce to eat, the crust wasn't that great either. It was flavorless and was easy to break since it wasn't that flexible, as pizza crust typically should be. However, the cheese/toppings were good, for the one bite you'd get per slice before it slid off onto your paper plate. Per one of the recommendations of another Yelper, we ordered the Antipasto salad, which was atrocious. There was chopped iceberg lettuce, chunks of celery, two chunks of mozzarella, and a teaspoon worth of roasted peppers. The kicker was it appeared as if they opened a can of tuna and dumped it on top of the salad. Now, I understand this is a pizza restaurant and not a fine Italian dining place (e.g., anywhere in the North End), however, the presentation and taste was sub-optimal to say the least. Lastly, the booths/tables were very uncomfortable and cramped, and the interior was dimly lit. I've eaten a lot of pizza in my life, and Denly Gardens pizza was some of the worst I've ever had. I feel sad saying that because I really want to root for this place since it's so old and steeped in tradition, but Denly's has a lot of areas to improve before I'd make a return visit. read more

I really liked the vibe at Denly's. When I heard the history of the restaurant and the building, I enjoyed it even more. It's got character. When a place has been around for more than 80 years, you celebrate the uniqueness of it, flaws and all. But no one goes to a restaurant just for atmosphere. I went for the pizza. To get the most out of any meal out, you've gotta ask the experts. We ordered a Roman (with hot peppers of course) and made our own. I listed the ingredients I liked the most and the chef recommended a delicious combo. We ordered the smallest pizza on the menu and out comes two gigantic pizzas. You definitely get your money's worth at Denly's. I enjoyed the beer selection too. Marie was very friendly and assisted me in making my selection of a local brew. Kudos to the chef. I was told Mark whipped up my dinner, but he also tends the bar so I'll have to come back when he can whip me up a cocktail too. I was also told I left behind the best part on my plate (the crust) but when you have two huge pizzas to eat, you have to prioritize. The crust was excellent, by the way. Family run neighborhood pizza and bar in a working class residential neighborhood in Weymouth. Visual first impressions can affect what one thinks of the food. So it didn't help that this place is dark, dingy, old, and dirty. The cold lighting made it worse! The old wooden booths add character, but some updating and cleaning would really help. Pizza was reasonably priced but not to our tastes. The crust lacked substance and was under seasoned. Toppings were tasty but piled on. There is such a thing as too much cheese. The antipasto appetizer was enough for four people for under $10. Decent selection of simple cold cuts, cheeses, marinated stuffed peppers, anchovies in oil, olives, and a moderately spicy chili sauce. It was the highlight of the meal. read more

We'd gotten decent take out but finally went there to eat and it's even better in person. My father ordered the italian style chicken wings - not something I'd ever pick...now I'm addicted! Crispy, parmesean-y, italian seasoned bites of heaven...(note to self - must go get them soon!) The tomato, mozzarella basil is a "deconstructed" caprese of the small mozzarella rounds, thin slices of basil, roasted tomatoes and a spicy hots - knock it out of the ball park fantastic. Whatever they roast those tomatoes in is mouth wateringly good. Personal fav of mine: Chicken, broccoli w/rigatoni (and I ask for extra broccoli b/c I love veggies). The portion is huge and I have extra for two days. My husband loves the pizza and I'd definitely recommend it for dining in only; it loses something when taken out and transported. I prefer to ask for well done - I love that crispy texture. It's very good. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the red sauce; it's heavy on the tomato paste flavor. Instead I'd ask to substitute the pomodoro sauce...everyone we know we've take here has really enjoyed whatever they've ordered. Big big disappointment ! I have tried Denly's before and was impressed with their pizza. I know everyone is always raving about it. Tonight I ordered pick up for two medium pizzas and a Greek salad. The pizza was horrible. The outer edges were burnt but the rest was practically raw , super thin and soggy. I even tried to re heat the pizza in the oven for a few minutes to crisp it up and it still wasn't salvageable. A digorno would've been more enjoyable and cheaper honestly. The 'turn-on' to Denlys, came from a coworker many fathoms ago. I was in search of a good pizza joint. Without hesitation: "DENLYS"! It didn't take me but a day or 2 to follow-up and since then, I have been a devotee. There is no other place to which I go other that DENLYS. It is a palace of pizza. Over the years, I think we have embibed upon all of the pies. They take a long time to cook...,but the waiting is well worth it. Delicious just begins to describe the pizza. Parking as previously mentioned can be problematic. Waiting for the pie to cook can be long. Service is okay. Cleanliness? (Could use an updating...but that just may deter from the charm). Comfort? Old and creaky booths. Cash only. DO I CARE? . . . . . . . ABSOLUTELY NOT! Everything is heavenly when the food arrives. Even though I am not a devotee of day old pizza, my husband is. How many times have I seen him 'polish off' the pizza that hadn't been previously finished? DUNNO, but in the recycling bin is the pizza box........almost like he had eaten the pie when no one was looking. Too funny. I go to Denlys, shall continue to go to Denlys, recommend Denlys. It took the wife and I 4 years of living in weymouth before we found our way to denleys...and thank goodness we finally did. Though we have gotten take out numerous times since, our first experience was eating in house. Parking at peak hours may be a pain in the neck but the pizza is well worth it. Thin crispy crust, perfect balance of cheese and sauce and just the right amount of greasy goodness to make you savor every bite. Tied for my favorite pizza on earth. The atmosphere here is wonderful. Original, homey, neighborhood friendliness that takes you back to a place and time before parents and kids stared down into iPhones at dinner instead of talking like civilized people about their day. Waitresses sitting down at tables with guests asking "how's you father doing? I heard he was in the hospital" or "Jimmy have his second kid yet?" I live right near this place and every night I watch people carrying out about 2-6 pizzas each. I know the place is ugly looking from the outside, and inside it's quite questionable, but decided to try the take-out pizza one night because I thought, 'what the heck, these Weymouth people must know something I don't.' I was wrong, the pizza was not good. I would never go back even though it smells so good when I walk by. And I would never eat inside, it is not my atmosphere (old, not updated, dirty looking, etc). Unfortunately I tried to redeem the 25% discount offered on Yelp for an international pizza but management refused to honor it saying they have a new computer that is not programmed to give me the offered discount. And they would not reduce the bill accordingly. Bummer. Good news! After about 20 minutes management came to my table and said they figured out how to honor the 25% discount. So they did. This place would get 5 stars if it wasn't for the consistently bad service. They're nice but just so slow, and the empty tables are usually always dirty when you walk in. The beer list looks long but they only actually have about 10% of what's on there. Now that the negative is out of the way, let's talk about the pizza. Might be the best damn pizza I've ever had. It's incredible. Had the white clam pizza the first time I went and couldn't believe how good it was, and it's been like that since. Really confused by the people who say it's not good are talking about. I've been to Italy, New York, and pretty much every pizza place in the metro Boston area and I'd put these pies up against any of them. I ordered the Tuscan pizza(artichokes and garlic), my hunny ordered the mushroom and salami with onions. Sauce is decent, toppings are good and the crust is good(up until the end, too crispy). This place has character! I'm not sure if it's a bar that serves pizza or a pizza place with a bar. Our waitress was awesome, she was the only person on staff for a busy place. There was a bartender there but he was mostly sitting at the bar like a patron. We got the garlic cheese bread and the original pizza. Sauce was good, pizza was good, on the oily side-reminded me of santarpios but with a crispy crust. Will definitely be going here again! read more
