Denly Gardens is one of those places where you could drive by it a million times and think nothing. It is what you would call a hole in the wall or a sleeper. That said the food is incredibly good and unique. When I was young we first started visiting Denly Gardens and forever I have gone back. Today I was out with some out of town clients and was able to take them. They loved it. For them coming from Texas where everything is a chain they loved the old New England feel. Today our pizza was cheese and vegetable. Both came out hot, perfectly cooked, with the vegetable one have plenty of toppings. The cheese was that ooowy gooey consistency that means it is the perfect temperature to cosume. I was so happy to be able to share this with my clients. The pizza has to be eaten direct from the oven, right in one of the old school wooden booths. It's integrity as an elite pizza will not survive the ride home. Super thin, light crust. Cheese reminds me of really good old places like Roman Gardens and Pizza Chef. It's a throw back for those in the know. I heard great things about this place and decided to give it a try for dinner. I ordered a large Marguerite pizza and 2 homemade meatballs. I was told they would give me the Napoli, no meat. I was told to pick it up in 25 minutes. I arrived on time and was told the total was $31, which was higher than I expected (based on online menu which says 7.95 for meatballs and $17 for large Napoli if they did not subtract for no prosciutto). I did not have enough cash. I was told I could pay by venmo so I did, paying Mark Caruso. He opened the pizza box and told me they usually have prosciutto and said he should close the box to make sure it stayed nice and hot. I got home in about 10 minutes to find the pizza was ice cold. The meatballs were hot and bread was tasty, but there is no way this pizza was made to order, must have been lying around for a long while to get this cold. The receipt attached to the box is for meatballs only. I looked online when I got home and realized that I had, in fact, been overcharged. We had to reheat the pizza to make it edible. This place got high praise from a coworker. I put off trying it, but then my favorite local pizza place went on vacation. I was having people over, and pizza is hard to go wrong with. Keep in mind, their naming conventions Are a bit different. Medium is the smallest size offered, followed by a large and a "monstah". Ordered a medium Sorrento pizza (with chicken) and a tossed salad. Sorrento pizza was mostly good, but there were a couple execution errors keeping it from being perfect. The crust was thin and airy (hand tossed too from the looks of it), but still sturdy enough to hold the slice. The toppings... good amount of chicken (large pieces too), and the tomato was nice. In terms of the pecorino, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Well, the basil and garlic are ingredients where I know exactly what to look for in flavors, and this is where the pizza fell short. I could taste it in bites here and there, but not throughout. All in all, very solid pizza... if that was it, I would have given 4 stars and gotten on with my day. But then there was the salad... Can someone please explain to me the aversion to actually taking a knife to the leaves? Why are they provided in such incredibly large chunks? There was also some lettuce (in fairness, very little) that had spoiled. If I were to put in three words what this place lacks, it is attention to detail. Putting basil and garlic on the pizza consistently, taking a knife to the salad and perhaps then noticing the spoiled lettuce. I wouldn't mind giving this place a shot with another pizza, but with other options around and my usual place opening back up, I don't see this happening in the near future. read more

A true gem! I ordered the garlic marina pizza, and stuffed shells and meatballs, which came with a complementary side of bread. The crust was perfectly thin and the garlic marina flavor was superb. Truly one of the best flavored pizzas I've tasted in such a long time. The meatballs were soft and flavorful and I enjoyed the stuffed shells too. But honestly guys, the star of the show for me was the bread. I haven't had such fresh tasting bread anywhere in MA my entire life - I would order loaves if I could. They are back to being my favorite pizza spot after I gave them a few more chances. When I used to live on Lake street I would got to this place all the time. I have since moved back in town and had a chance to try them a number of times. The key for me is to ask for the pizza very well done and it comes out amazing every time. It's the closest thing to New Haven pizza that I have found in the Boston area so long as it is very well done. They are also one of the very few places that has a clam pizza on the menu and the only other spots I see that is the pizza capital New Haven, CT. It's still a throw back and cash only. read more

Denleys was a HUGE disappointment. This is not a traditional, Italian pizza nor is it a pub style pizza. At best it is a step above thin, frozen pizza with a drizzle of olive oil. Just moved to the area and tried Denly's based on the rave Yelp reviews and I am *totally* glad I did. I thought the pizza was good - not life-changing, but solid pizza. But the atmosphere of the place is the stuff of legend. As another reviewer wrote, it's like walking into 1975. The only thing missing is an aged Centipede game. There is a small bar where almost everyone was standing and drinking Miller High Life. Everyone at the bar and those of waiting for our To Go orders were all in good spirits. If you enjoy good pizza and an awesome throwback, you should definitely go here. Note: I did not see a parking lot, so everyone appears to park on the street. read more

Walked into Denly Gardens and thought I was in 1975. Immediately loved it. Old school vibe with old tables and booths. Classic pizza joint. Our server was awesome. Remember that parlor with checkered plastic table cloths, modular bench seating, red soda pints and grated parm so old, it's clumped back to its original wedge? Denly's is that, minus red cups, add Expresso (sic) Martinis. You'd never find this place if you didn't (a) know a guy who knows a guy, or (b) find it on Yelp from the guy's guy who happens to review businesses snugged in an otherwise house-laden neighborhood. And it's not just a largely unchanged anachronism dishing cracker crust pizzas and lubing up local barflys with Heinekens at noon, it's an arcade and a full liquor bar - with a 1960s pinball tucked in the rear, assumed to only be functional in holding up said pizzas, and a wall of flavored vodkas. Hence, the random girly-tini menu. Our Sorrento medium (an inexplicable 14 incher for $8.25) is topped with fresh tomatoes, EVOO, pecorino, basil, garlic and mozzarella. slid blazing hot from a wall slot pie hole and in to, well, your pie hole. Seriously, it's hot. Wait a minute or two, lest the roof of your mouth turn into what an albino tourist becomes after drinking a bucket of Jungle Juice and passing out on the beaches of St. Thomas. It's not pretty. Old World Style does not mean gourmet, by any stretch. What it is: buttery, sharp and salty, priced what it was in the 80s and ready to tackle your tongue with history. I'm ashamed I passed over the house-made meatballs (next time), and that we didn't take advantage of the check-in offer for 25% off a large international pie. Excellent pizza. Honestly for good, old world, Italian/NY/Boston style pizza Denly Gardens, along with Pizzeria Regina, and Ernesto's are the places to go. Denly Gardens has probably the thinnest pie around MA, that rivals the thin pizza of NJ or CT. Denly Gardens' pizza has perfect cheese to sauce ratio for that awesome orange NY slice appearance. The crust is crispy but with some tenderness, again very similar to a NY slice. The sauce is vibrant, with Greek or Sicilian oregano added. The cheese has that perfect NY slice grease which is an indicator of nice fatty mozzarella that is cooked long enough to oil off. The dough seems like a same day or room temp ferment dough. they use paper plates which I'm impressed by. All in all, this is one of the best pizzas around. Sadly, there are not many good Italian pizza places around with deck ovens, but Denly Gardens keeps the tradition alive. I'd give it a 5 star, but like figure skating or pizza reviews, I never award 5 stars. Denlys knows how to balance a pizza out and I love the cornmeal on the bottom of the pizza, along with some nice browning. Very good waitress and staff; very friendly and helpful. good pizza and nice throw back setting with wood booths but don't go there in the winter. the place is always freezing and I mean keep your jacket on cold. I can understand maybe turning the heat down a little to save a few $ given what food places have gone through the last couple of years but this is crazy. We had to change our order to a to-go order because we couldn't sit there any longer. no explanation from staff as to why it was so flippin cold. Two other people have mentioned the same thing to me on their recent visits. If you don't want "saucy" pizza make sure you order it well done. The pizza is always consistently excellent, the crust is delicious, sauce very flavorful, cheeses used are perfect! My particular favorite is the Parmadori pizza with red ripe tomato and a blend of unique cheeses I always ask them for fresh basil added to this pizza it's a wonderful combination! Also aside from their pizza be sure to try their chicken parm with spaghetti real generous portions and awesome fresh red sauce again, Wonderful! Great Greek salad and anti pasto too. Finally made it here after living in Weymouth for 12 years! I had the Greek pizza. I was disappointed it didn't include mozzarella cheese. I just assumed pizza came with it. It was still okay, but a little heavy on the olives. The bottom crust was super thin, which I usually like, but the side crust was as well, which made that part of the pizza inedible, in my opinion. read more

I got take-out. The sign says Old World style, which is a euphemism for 3rd-world-country-hole-in-the wall type of joint. Kidding of course - I kind of like it. The parking situation isn't great, but I did find a spot right outside the door. A large pizza was only $13 and change with two toppings. Not bad! My mushroom an onion was pretty good, though I did feel the need to add Cholula hot sauce which isn't something I always do. The next day, the pizza heated up nicely in the toasted oven. I live about two blocks from this place and have heard nothing but good from locals about the pizza. People come from miles away to get this pizza. I learned last night that they have gluten free crust (and GF pasta) and was excited to try. The crust was hands-down the best gluten free crust that I've tried in over 20 years of living gluten free. My daughter picked up this order and did warn me that they seem to have no awareness of cross contamination. She reported that the pie was placed on the same tray as regular crust pizzas and that they cut the gluten free pie with the same knife that was used on the gluten pies. My go-to pizza spot ever since moving to the area 3 years ago. I grew up in New Haven where there's arguably the best pizza in the country. Denley's is legit thin-crust pizza and it's consistently great. Bar pizza is gross and doesn't hold a candle to the quality these guys put out, don't care where it's from or what anyone says. It's literally a hole in the wall with next to no parking, very few tables and dates decor. It shouldn't mystify anyone who has seen the outside that the inside isn't modern or fancy and that you, gasp, may have to wait for a table to be cleared when you arrive (that fact that you happened upon an empty table is luck to you!) Anyway, my only issue is inconsistency. I've had pizza that was a tad soggy and I've had stellar pies. I've had horrible antipasto and magnificent ones. Overall, I dig the pizzas because they are reminiscent of those so had while living in Italy - the toppings and combinations are authentic. This is an extremely old school restaurant...which I think is great. It's a big local hangout and the people are really friendly. The pizza is good, Italian style. The Monstah pizza is popular with the kids. I actually like the sandwiches and dinners more than the pizza. However, I wish their pasta dishes were a little more consistent in the way they are made......but they're still great. read more
