The food here was pretty good, but I was more concerned about the attitude of the employees at the restaurant especially with allergies. Conveniently located right next to the Double Tree Hilton, it's less than a minute walk and open 24 hours. Though, we walked into the restaurant (I'll give credit though, it was maybe 9 or so) and it took a good little bit for someone to come up to us and seat us, despite employees from over the counter looking at us. Our first waitress seemed to have an attitude with us, but seemed like she was trying to cover it. We then had a different waiter take our order, and he didn't have an attitude but seemed to be ignorant regarding my food allergy. Usually when you go to a restaurant, you're supposed to inform your waiter about an allergy in case of cross-contamination. The waiter asked me "so?" and when I tried to explain it, he proceeded to ask what it meant and still seemed confused. I don't think the waiter had negative intentions or apathy, but I just think he was rather ignorant and uninformed regarding the issue. I've definitely been to much better Denny's, and I would be wary of this one if you do have a food allergy and want more positive servers. read more

Two stars is being kind and only for the service. Our server, Ebony, was a doll. Very sweet and kind. Greeted upon walking in, the smell was awful. It smelled like a bathroom was leaking. I wanted to walk out but wanted to give it a chance. The decor outside was retro and amazing as was Inside. The food... oh god. Absolutely disgusting. Over cooked eggs, old old grease to where my strips were so dark they looked burnt!!! The atmosphere is advertised as 50's, but they played hip hop and rap as their music?? Just awful. The floor was disgusting just an awful experience as an out of towner and fifties lover, I am sorely disappointed.. will never come here again. read more

I went to Denny's with a friend of mine that recommended going here after a high school graduation at the Erwin Center. First, it was late (around 10PM) and, although there weren't many customers there, the manager stated that they were understaffed. The manager was nice and the servers were as well. I ordered the Belgium Waffle Slam because I really had a desire to have a big waffle because I hadn't had one in awhile. I ordered orange juice as well to go with it. As I got halfway done eating the waffle, I got near the end of one side of the waffle and noticed that, as I was cutting it with my fork, there was a hair coming up with my fork. I looked closer at that end of the waffle and there were three somewhat long hairs in it. Yuck! I told the manager and she asked if I wanted another one made, and I told her, "No, thank you." I finished the eggs and bacon, but the meal was ruined for me, as I was combing through the eggs to see if there were any more hairs. They weren't mine because my head is shaved. The cook, however, was a guy that had a long hair tied into a ponytail. As for the orange juice, I got about halfway done with it and started to taste what some would refer to as a "mildew" like taste and smell. Anybody that has drunk out of a glass from a dishwasher that wasn't that great knows what this taste is like. I should have been "comped" the entire meal, seeing that the Belgium waffle was the reason that I ordered this meal to begin with, but the manager just took half off on the meal. I believe that she kept the orange juice on the bill as well. I don't know because my friend felt bad for suggesting the place to me and he paid for it. I told him that I don't think I'd ever come back to that particular Denny's, again. Service really doesn't mean much if the actual food and drink are not up to par. read more

I ordered a veggie burger and i don't know if it goes without saying but most people who order a veggie burger are normally vegetarians or have another reason to not eat meat (religious etc.) and for some random reason the cook decided to put bacon on my veggie burger. Came here on a busy Saturday night with my husband. I understand that there were people ahead of us so we waited patiently. However after 40 minutes of waiting three groups of people who arrived after us were seated before us. Even then after finally placing our order, people who were seated AFTER us got their food before us. We have been here for over 45 minutes and the waiter is laughing and giggling and fiddling with his pony tail. I like this place, I really do. It's a clean, solid Denny's, and having lived in Chicago for 4 years (where there aren't Denny's) after growing up in California (where Denny's are everywhere), I sort of missed (gulp) Denny's. So yeah, Denny's etiquette, keep it simple. If you want a steak, don't order it at Denny's. I never understand why people order gourmet food at dives. If you order a Grand Slam or a Burger, you should leave happy. The staff here is attentive and quick. One thing about Denny's, especially this one, is they hire kooks. Between singing to me, telling me about all the presents she bought for her daughter at midnight on Black Friday, or just going on and on about nonsense to me for several minutes, I always seem to get a waiter or waitress who is in dire need of a hug. So take the bad with the good, but if you're going to fill me up for $6, I'm going to leave satifsfied. read more

Word of caution...don't subject yourself to the poorest service Austin has to offer!!! I went to Denny's for lunch with some co-workers and though my meal was substandard, I tolerated it. The fun began when I went to pay my bill. I used my credit card and was engaged in a conversation with one of the girls while I signed my ticket not thinking the girl behind the counter would be so thoughtless as to not return my card to me. As I was going through my purse to register my receipt in my checkbook, I realized my card was missing and I immediately began looking for it. After carefully searching, I asked my friends if they recalled my card being returned to me and to my dismay they all said no. I called the restaurant to backtrack and was told they couldn't help me because the manager was on a conference call. I became irate and told them a customer and a missing card seemed more important, but no, he would not talk to me. One thing led to another and the ultimate result was my having to call the bank to report my card stolen. Big hassle!!!! Bottom line...poor customer service and an overall distrust of this establishment. I know, I should pay more attention to my surroundings...I agree...but a place of business should pay more attention to their customers. By the way, two out of three in our group became sick at work. Wrong Denny's. I meant the one off of Oltorf and IH 35. Not that I think this would make a big difference. :( read more

We came on a Saturday so I expected it might be a little busy. When we came in we were told it was a 15 minute wait. About 30 minutes later I noticed there were at least 6 open tables and booths. I inquired why no one was being seated and I was told the kitchen was behind. They decided it was better to tell everyone there was a 15 min wait (which was actually 45 minutes) and make them stand up rather then have them comfortably seated looking at the menu. Poor management decision and it made more then a few customers upset and some left. This is their prime business time, late nights and weekends. That's when the better places are full so people flock to ihop and Denny's because at least it's faster. I wish I had called ahead because I could have been seated at Magnolia's faster or even kerbey lane rather then having to wait for mediocrity at a Denny's. I picked it because it's only a mile away and I figured it would be quicker. I won't make that mistake again, this place appears to be poorly run and the food was just mediocre. I know my whole review focused on the bad service and seating but we've all eaten at a Denny's, so do I really have to describe the food. It's 2am only place open with decent prices food. I got the all American slam. It actually came out in a reasonable time and was ok. My date got the chicken fried steak and eggs plate. I don't recommend any kind of steak from Denny's unless you are too drunk to tell the quality but she always gets that if its on the menu. read more

I have never in my life been to a place with better service. this place has the wonderful look and feel of an old time diner. which is what drew us in. we come from out of town as often as possible to stay in austin and this is the place we choose to eat. we have never found a place anywhere that compares. the sevice is amazing and yes i have read some of the bad comments but i think it is just ppl being picky and stupid quite honestly. i dont c a thing wrong with them bringing me a new glass everytime instead of refilling mine. I consider myself a foodie, i really like high end food. So it seems weird i would give Denny's 5 stars, which i rarely do. I eat at a Dennys about 3-4 times a year, only for breakfast and it is always good. But it is the service, especially at this location, that gives this a 5 star. I have eaten at this Dennys 3 times before, always around 5-6 am, and amazingly, the sweet waitress that waited on me before actually remembered my and that i drink diet coke. Amazing. Today was the ultimate in service, though. I came in VERY early (4:30 am) and there were only 2 tables with guests, but you could tell the patrons were hammered. The waitress on duty today was still very polite and took care of them. Luckily, one of the tables with a young drunk man talking very loudly and profanely finished their meal and left before i got my food. Thank goodness, i thought. Then, here comes these 4 VERY loud obnoxious foreign men, very intoxicated (in fact one of them had to leave before even being served). One in particular was very demanding, loud, would not sit down, and kept yelling "water". However, this nice waitress handled it all so well, telling him calmly "i will be right with you". Finally she professionally waited on them, even though i would not have been so polite. Just because you are drunk doesn't mean you have to act like a complete asshole to the polite people who have to put up with your shit at that time of morning.
