I had brunch at Victory East in ATX while on vacation from Ohio, on 7/12. When I say the service was top tier and everything was ideal from the moment I walked in the door, and the food was nothing short of delicious, I mean every word! And that is coming from someone with high expectations for eating out. So, I specifically was looking for a Black-owned restaurant to support while I was there - God knew exactly what I needed! The building is attached to some amazing Black history, everything was clean, the vibe was amazing, and as soon as we walked in and every staff member provided exceptional service. The music was even on point y'all! The drinks were delicious and affordable (2 mimosas for $10), and I was pleased that I ordered the 3-piece chicken wing meal with greens (smoked turkey) and macaroni and cheese. If I wasn't getting on a flight, I'd have ordered food to-go! Seasoned to perfection, cooked with love and all the way through - you know how we like it ha ha! The chicken was not breaded heavy, which is literally textbook perfection for me. Oh yeah, I tried the waffle too and it was very good! Soft on the inside and golden on the outside. Also, there is a whole entire speak easy in the back and it was lit! Apparently, Sunday is the day to go for sure because there was a whole DJ and it was poppin'! I was low key mad I had to leave to catch a flight. They had a patio outside as well and it was huge, neat and clean. We didn't stay outside because TX does not play with the heat index in July! Honestly, I cannot wait to visit ATX again and go back to Victory East because it is my new regular spot that I will visit each and every time. If i could give you a -5, That would be your score. This is simply unexceptional to make reservations and never eat. June 19 was my birthday and I was excited not only to celebrate it with a group of nine individual individuals coming to celebrate with me. I have been here before seeing others celebrate their birthday with a nice table setting and all the trimmings. This was the worst mistake ever!!!! Upon arrival before the schedule reservation, it was implied that we would be sitting down to eat dinner. I made reservations prior to coming through online services with open door. They confirmed my reservation and all of the ladies showed up on time. The waiter instructed me that we had to sit outside and I told him that was not an option because it was quite warm. The waiter put us in the area of the speakeasy, part of the venue, implying that we will be able to order food in this area. This was not true, so I went back to the front of the restaurant and had a conversation with the gentleman who told me it would be about 30 minutes. Mind it is now 9:30 PM. After waiting 30 minutes and still not having the ability to order food. We packed up by 10:15 and left. Prior to the party this location I was told I will be speaking with the manager and then told to wait a few minutes. After waiting still no conversation, then I was told that they will give me a call so that we will be able to set up a make up appointment reservations for brunch. I left in disappointment and with hope that victory East would do better!!! This company is not reliable. I do not refer them. I'm not interested. I have not heard from them. There has been no apology. It is misleading. And people still complain about not supporting black. This is the reason why. Obviously it's over two weeks and I'm never gonna hear from this company. So at this point I feel that it is going to be a historical location. You cannot do business like this. I realize that people do have short staff, but the reality is we just have to be honest. It's been a while since I've been here but decided to bring my mom for an early Mother's Day brunch and was quite disappointed. Like many places, they are short staffed. We found out the waitress for our table was actually the bartender. We had a reservation but had to wait a few for an open table. The table we were seated at was very wobbly along with a very slippery floor. Not sure if they mopped the floor with Cooking oil or what. The brunch menu is limited but I didn't mind, makes for easier decisions. I ordered the French Toast which came with eggs and I added bacon ($6 for 3 strips of bacon, omg!). Didnt take long for the food to come so I don't know if my food was old or what but considering the short wait time and the fact that both my bacon and eggs appeared to be overcooked leaves me curious. The french toast was okay, nothing too fancy. The restrooms could have been cleaned better. Whoever cleaned did a subpar job, especially for it to be so early in the day. So maybe it was just the day that I went because I've heard rave reviews about this place. I was excited to finally get to try it. Upon arriving, I was sat near the door, which was totally fine. Had a reservation on a Thursday but really no need as it was only two or three other tables in the restaurant the layout from what I could see was pretty simple tables and a bar. The main entrance has you walking directly into the seating area there's no separation of entryway, so an awkward welcome experience. The lady who assisted me was very nice. I did find out that she normally does not work for front of the house so the service probably was a little bit different than what you normally see. I ordered the deviled eggs and then the snapper fish. The deviled eggs came out not so great to me. They tasted very stale almost like if they had sat in the fridge overnight, where the yolks had kind of absorbed some of the flavor, the egg was overcooked so I tried one and then I did not eat the remaining two and thankfully the restaurant was kind enough to take that off of my total bill. The snapper was very flavorful and had a great crust on the outside unfortunately was also overdone with the middle of the fish, kind of being rubbery to eat a little and a bit more firm than I would like, so maybe it could've been the type of fish. We got so lucky we were able to reserve a table 15 minutes before a time slot, which was very nice. Staff was very nice and quick to get and bring out our order. The place is nicely decorated and dim, very intimate, unless you're sitting right next to people which is fine but maybe not for a date. Everything was going so well. Had the wings and fries, really like their wings, nice crispy texture and good sauce. The lamb chops were good and paired well with the sides. I visited Victory East in downtown Austin back in October to celebrate my birthday. Overall, the experience was solid, with some standout dishes and a few misses that brought the rating to three stars. The food was mostly good, with a couple of highlights. The oxtail mac & cheese was excellent -- rich, flavorful, and absolutely the star of the table. We also tried the wings, which were enjoyable, and a deviled egg topped with shrimp that was perfectly seasoned -- honestly, I could eat that shrimp all day. My friend ordered a few different items as well and enjoyed what he tried. There were a few things that fell short. I ordered a blackberry cocktail (can't recall the exact name), and the smoky note from the alcohol used threw off the balance for me. I also ordered a side of brussels sprouts, which was disappointingly small and much harder than expected -- I couldn't even tell if they'd been properly pan-seared. Service was friendly throughout, though we did experience a longer-than-anticipated wait toward the end of the meal, which slightly impacted the overall flow of the night. All in all, Victory East has some really strong dishes and potential, but a few inconsistencies kept it from being a higher rating. Sometimes you can go to a place several times and then you rethink your vision of the place. This happened on Friday night. My leadership cohort was meeting at Victory East (formerly Victory Grill) for happy hour. Within the same location is a Speak Easy (Busy Signal) at the back of the building. As I was taking pictures of the mural inside, the hostess told me that everyone in that mural had played or sang at Victory East. These artists where a part of the Chitlin' Circuit, such as legendary artists like Billie Holiday, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, B.B. King, and Etta James. Wow! I knew Victory East had historical significance; however, I did not know the ties ran so deep and wide. According to the hostess Victory East was originally created as a safe space for African American soldiers returning from World War II where they could freely drink, dance and eat in then segregated South. After my talk with the hostess, I had a new appreciation for Victory East. Our cohort had drinks (lemon drop, margaritas, mojitos) and food (fried chicken wings, fried catfish, mac n cheese, salad and jerk chicken sliders). One the highlights of visiting Victory East is its beverages. For cocktails, their mixologists combine the perfect amount of alcohol and other ingredients. The Lemon Drop martini was superbly made. The food was all 5+/5...perfectly seasoned and cooked flawlessly. Service was at the next level. We had two servers frequently asking if we needed anything and removing dishes from our table. They both were very attentive. Victory East is a vibe. You are instantly transported to a different place and time. The restaurant / bar is dimly lit with dark walls giving a romantic ambiance. This is an historic Austin venue, named in honor of V day (WWII), and was established as a place for African American community, including dining and live music. Today, is pay homage to it's roots with a beautiful mural showcasing numerous musicians who have graced the stage. Honestly, my rating is a 2.5 1. I must give a shout out to the hostess who answered my call. I wanted to get a feel about seating and parking. She gave me detailed instructions. Also when we came in, even though she already had a table ready, she accommodated my (extra) request to be seated at a booth. 2. My friends and I arrived at Victory Grill around 12:30 PM. We went to the back and tried to order a couple of drinks. For some reason, the baristas and bartenders only seemed interested in entertaining the run club that had come in. We were finally able to place our food and drink order at 12:50 PM. Around 12:55 PM, we stepped outside for a few minutes. We came back inside at around 1:30 PM to check on our food, and it still wasn't ready. When we walked back into the building, I noticed the bartender make an expression as if he had forgotten about us or forgotten to check on our order. He apologized and told us they were wrapping up our food and had gotten caught up with other orders. While looking around, I noticed that the run club had already received their food and were almost finished eating. I was confused because, aside from the run club and my group of four, there was nobody else in the speakeasy area being served. I couldn't understand why they were so behind on orders. I started to become frustrated, but my friends told me to give them a chance since they had apologized and said our food was almost ready. We came back in again around 2:00 PM, and the food still wasn't done. At this point, we were all obviously frustrated, and it was noticeable. I could see what appeared to be the owner or manager, wearing camo pants, telling the bartender to hurry up. He also seemed occupied with one of the baristas. While my friends and I were sitting near the staircase, he was standing there checking out her physical features in front of our party. She was flirting back with him as if she was giving him a show. Both of them were noticeable. Maybe they didn't realize we could see them. At that point, I started wondering if this was one of the reasons our food was taking so long. Around 2:22 PM, our food finally came out. The sweet potatoes were soggy and tasted like old potato wedges, and the chicken was not seasoned at all. There was a nice young man with glasses who brought our food out. He was very sweet and respectful. We had waited so long that we just took the food to go. I ended up throwing everything away. Before we left, the same barista who had been flirting with the man in the camo pants kept checking on us, but by then we were already over it. I'm not sure if Victory Grill is supposed to be a historic landmark for Black Austinites, but it definitely didn't feel like it during our visit. At first, I thought maybe it was just me, but then I noticed a pattern in the reviews. It seems like some people have a good experience and others don't. It gave me the impression that they care more about certain aesthetics or certain types of people coming into their business, and those people seem to receive a better experience than others. read more

It took about 20 more mins for the server to come take our appetizer orders. At that point the hostess tried to take our menus and we hadn't even ordered entrees. We moved to the back of the restaurant to the bar room which had low mood lighting and a sofas but the drinks were the same from the restaurant so we just left. I have a mixed review about this place because I like it BUT there were a lot of things that went wrong. Before I get into it, I will say the location is a little tricky for parking so I HIGHLY suggest Uber/Lyft. Luckily it was a week day so we found street parking in a neighborhood with not so far of a walk. Shortly after we sat down it began to get busy and that's when things started to go down hill. Firstly our waiter easily became overwhelmed as she was the only one working all the tables since two of the other waiters called off. We ordered our food at 8:10 and did not get it until after 9pm. Since we ordered appetizers we had to check in with her twice on the order and she had forgot to put it separate from the food so when we finally got our food everything came at the same time. The food is a mixed review because only certain items were good. Firstly DO NOT order the grilled fish, cabbage, or the seasoned rice. 100000000% disgusting! However, the oxtail, fried chicken, Mac and Brussels sprouts were good. Nothing was amazing but at least the other items were eatable. Due to the lack of service and the longgggg wait, the manager offered us either a free drink or dessert so that was nice. Now for the speakeasy that's there, it's the main attraction. There is an entrance by going through the restaurant (which causes lots of foot traffic) or through the outside. We were there on a Thursday and every Thursday they do karaoke (free shot if you sing) and I will say it was a vibe. The layout was great, not too many people but just enough to have a good time. I highly suggest checking the lounge out after you eat, especially if it's a Thursday. FYI the kitchen serves the same food in both places so you don't have to eat at the restaurant, you can go straight to the lounge. read more

I would love to say that when it finally came the oxtail Mac n cheese was worth your first born child, and the hookah felt like what I would imagine inhaling and exhaling clouds from the sky would feel like.
