The server that I had last time and this time (Thomas) was non obtrusive and knows how to work his section well. I never had to turn around to ask for a refill on my lemonade and the food was ok as well. My only gripe which is not their fault is the construction going on in front of the restaurant, it's a freaking eye sore! Sometimes late at night, you just want a sit down spot. This is not an amazing Denny's by any means but it does what it's supposed to. The waitresses here are actually quite nice. They don't get as many drunkdards, but more locals and people passing through so they stay a little bit more friendly. I was going to work and ordered my food online in route. I ordered the fit slam with no bananas online and the people are supposed to read the order right?!?! Well obviously they don't read because I got bananas on my order. Eggs had water,muffin was burned, and they gave me bananas. I was so disappointed and didn't have time to go back.Which was good because I probably would have thrown the food at the manager anyway. Especially after the manager lied to me when I called and told Debbie about the error. She stated she would give me a full refund and never did. OK, since my beloved Triple AAA Diner on Airline shuttered, I've been looking for a good Saturday-morning breakfast place on my "diet cheat" day. On a whim, I went to Denny's. Short version: the Denny's you always remember from your childhood, but this one is clean, friendly and a microcosm of the Inner Loop world. Hey, it's a Denny's - it's reliable. Long version: OK, yes, it's a chain, and many hipsters and empty-headed millennials would not want to be caught dead at a Denny's, the same way they look down their noses and roll their eyes when someone mentions the dreaded "Wal-Mart." I get that. But if you want a solid, old-fashioned Grand Slam breakfast, hot coffee, a clean diner and friendly waitstaff, this is the real deal. Ignore the naysayers and just dive on in. As usual, I sat at the counter and was greeted immediately by both the manager on duty as well as the waitress. The coffee was piping hot and good. The food came out quickly and efficiently. As Lindsey D. pointed out, they do have a better calorie-counting menu. It's nice to know that I'm socking away 1,500 calories before 9 am, so I can work it off doing yard work. But I digress. What really impressed me about this place was the friendliness of everyone, the efficiency of the line cooks - and trust me, a line cook is worth his or her weight in gold - and the cleanliness of the restroom. NOTE: If you want to know if a restaurant's kitchen is clean, look at their bathrooms. This is a tip that an old City Health Inspector gave me. If the bathroom is spotless, the kitchen will be clean too. The men's room was immaculate, so I had a lot of confidence in the kitchen's upkeep. The staff was VERY pleasant - which is a given, because the neighborhood (Garden Oaks/Lazybrook) is still pretty much an older-generation one. You can see a lot of locals in here from these subdivisions who appear to be regulars, given the fact that the waitstaff greeted them by name. It did really remind me of a newly upholstered Triple AAA. So - will I return? Only if I'm in need of a Grand Slam fix, and it's my "diet cheat" day. In other words, yes. I placed an order to go through Uber eats, I didn't get my fruit with my pancakes when I called back to talk to Tony about it he took it personally speaking over me arguing with me and refused to give me anybody else other than him. He claim to be it, he was the one in charge and there was no one else I could speak to about the matter. He was yelling through the phone that he had a full house and that he wasn't worried about my order being complete or my missing fruit and hung up. Food: I know Denny's isn't exactly fine dinning, but I really did expect a little more. Part of the dish was okay and the other part had that "we haven't cleaned our hot plate in 3 weeks" flavor. Plus I felt terrible after eating the food. Not sure what that was about. Environment: This place smells horrible! I think its just settled into the walls and carpet. Very gross. The windows looked like they haven't been cleaned, the walls had food on them as well as the blinds. In fairness, the restrooms were clean enough. But then they didn't have a coat/purse rack. Seriously? It could also use some updating but that wouldn't have been a big deal if it didn't smell and look so dirty. Service: This is one area that was alright. Slow service, mediocre food, it's denny's. Drinks stayed empty, food made my buddy nauseous, and my other buddy was still hungry after eating here. My French toast slam consisted of a single piece of french toast, 2 paltry and lousy eggs, and the poorest excuse for bacon I've ever had. It also took them 30 minutes or so to bring us our food. Restaurant was decrepit obviously having not been cleaned thoroughly in ages, surprisingly the restrooms were reasonably clean and well kept. I went there for my lunch break and only had an hour for lunch. I explaned that to the waiter,and it still took the waiter 45 mintues to bring my drink. We also had about 4 waitresses come to our table,and asked what we wanted to drink. So I was unsure on who our waiter really was. The glasses they gave us were cracked at the bottom,and one was dirty. Once we recieved our food it was cold,the only reason why ate it was because we had no choice,we had to be back at work in 5 minutes.
