I brought my lunch today for work. Except, I needed to go on a bank errand during my break. After leaving the bank Mr. Submarine caught my eye AGAIN. I had to stop. I needed to find out if this place had a good sub. Sandwiches are my favorite food, and some how the name reminds me of The Beatles, Yellow Submarine. The first thing I noticed walking in is how clean it looked and smelled in there. I like when restaurants take pride in cleanliness. The set-up here is counter staff. Order at the counter and pick-up at the counter. I asked for a recommendation from the cashier. He highlighted numerous choices for me kindly. I'm into spicy foods so I ordered the Hot Pepper Philly. I walked around the place after I placed my order and look around. The decor here was pretty minimal, but decent for a family ran sub shop. I notice they have all kinds of things to fit everyones taste. From salads to wings I say they have a fitting menu. The prices here are more than reasonable, so this beats out other places around here in value. I picked up my sandwich and bought a whole pickle. It's been a while since I've had one of those. When I got to work I dove right in. This sandwich is huge! 7 inches, unlike the 6 inches you get anywhere else and priced at $3.89! BOOM! I'm sorry, but thats exciting for me. Great taste, the beef was very well seasoned and the veggies were fresh. They use mayo and a house dressing that gives the sub a kick. The bread was nice, warm, and soft. This is the first sub that actually held together through the entire session. When I want very delicious and inexpensive subs, this will be my spot. I am proud to have gone in and tried it myself.

Okay, so I've been getting philly cheesesteak sandwiches here for a few years. It's certainly a hole in the wall, but the food is great. The inside is rather small and not incredibly comfortable, but it reminds me of the little "ma and pa" sub shops that I eat at whenever I'm in New England. You don't get too much of that down here. It's just very cozy and laid back, but I normally just order to go. My last visit here, I ordered "The Grand Philly" It comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mushroom. The bread was perfectly fresh. The vegetables were fresh and they added just the right amount of sauce.

Great prices, large portions, and the food is outstanding. The inside is a bit run down but the food makes this place a must try.

I toyed with ideas of the most non nutritious food to order because I felt I deserved it. Something comforting. I decided on a Philly cheesesteak and fries. This was my first time ordering from Pappa Geno's, but I have considered it before. I was going to order from Miller's Cafe because I like theirs, but I get much more from Pappa Geno's. I like that their cheesesteaks are traditional footlong size on a soft hoagie. The Pappa Geno's steak and cheese was filled with thinly sliced steak, melted cheese and mayo. I added mushrooms to mine. They wrap it up in foil paper to keep it nice and warm. If you're really hungry, you can eat the whole thing. If not, you can eat half of it and save the other half for later. The meat was seasoned and on the moist side compared to others. I've been to both rival cheesesteak places (Geno's and Pat's) in Philly, and I thought this was a nice alternative for Houston to have. I think I still prefer the thinly sliced steak flavor from Miller's Cafe. The side of fries are crispy with almost a breading on the exterior. Same fries as Piper's Cantina, if you've ever been. I'm not that into breaded fries like these, but it was good and was a large portion. The sandwich itself is on the pricier side but a decent portion. I'd like to try their other Philly cheesesteak options or add hot oil peppers like the Wicked Philly. Pappa Geno's is a great option if you want a more authentic Philly cheesesteak fix.

We only tried the hoagies, chips, and fries, but everything was good. The hoagies came out in a crunchy baguette. I'm guessing the bread is Vietnamese banh mi bread rolls. They were crunchy and very light. I liked the Italian better than the cheesesteak. The cheesesteak is a little salty for my taste, but it is still decent. This is a small mom and pop, not a fancy or trendy place. I would compare it to a hole in the wall and many people take it to go. Lots of people were calling in for the pizza and take out.

Unfortunately about a year ago from the date of this review, Peter, which was the Asian owner of Chinese decent, decided to retire and long be gone. I was saddened to hear they I cannot get my delicious cheese steak sandwiches that I have not been able to find anywhere else. I'm a little bit biased to this establishment because I used to work there in the late '80s for a few months helping to make the preps for the foods there. Forward to now, I found this place upon a recommendation from a friend and semince this is a block for my residence I decided to try it. BLAST!! This is a spitting image out what ROCKY'S tasted like when it existed. I was blown away also when I heard that owner of this establishment that's been here for decades, was high school friend with Peter. (of Rocky's Subs) so they decided to open a business amongst each other in different places hence the parallel recipes as well as the pizza. It is rough inside and it showing its age but there are such thing as hole in the walls and sometimes they are the best places to eat correct? Well here is one of them and the bonus benefit is the prices are early 1990s currency! Where else can you get a Cheesesteak Hoagie for the price of around $7 and some change plus half price on the next one? This place never seems busy you know I was wondering how it stays open but hurry and get your cheese steak fixed before this guy decides to follow suit. There are coupons for the pizza that you can pick up at the counter and already at a very purposely priced average layout of $12 ish you can even get a discount off of that which you can feed a small party. This is one of those places where I tried it three times in one week and those that know me no that I will legitimately return as a nuisance until I'm sick of an establishment... and here I am. That Ambience is Cafe style and you're not going to get any decorations or happy cashiers but you will get a glimpse of its past ghostly history which seem to have been a Mexican restaurant at one time....decades ago! Don't let the outside deter you because there's not much to see and if you're driving past here fast enough, you might not see it and then when you step inside, don't get a double whammy of being surprised but just try the product for pizza sake, you will love it.

The inside definitely has a Cajun feel to it with the decor; very Louisiana. I was greeted and made the 4th quarter decision to get a muffuleta, chips and a canned pop. So when I decided to give Angelo Z's a try, I came in hopeful but ready to judge with the precision of a seasoned shrimp connoisseur. First, I'll give credit where it's due: the place is designed beautifully. Clean, inviting, well thought-out décor. The staff? Top-notch. Friendly smiles, fast service -- the kind of welcome that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. But then my shrimp po'boy arrived. And that's where things took a turn. The bread was toasted -- yes, toasted -- which, for a Louisiana po'boy, is already a red flag. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the traditional French bread that's light, airy inside, and has that delicate crackle on the crust. Instead, it was a dense, over-toasted loaf that crunched like I was chewing on a roofing shingle. Then came the real deal-breaker: I bit in and realized the shrimp hadn't been deveined. At all. And for anyone who knows seafood, that black line running down the back isn't some "seasoning" -- it's grit and waste. One glance at that and my appetite clocked out. I understand I'm not in Louisiana anymore, and I'm all for creative spins on classics, but there's a line between "putting your own twist" on something and missing the fundamentals altogether. Unfortunately, this missed the mark in a way I couldn't overlook. Beautiful space. Wonderful people. But for me? A shrimp po'boy that isn't deveined, on the wrong bread, and toasted into oblivion isn't a po'boy worth coming back for.
