Mr. Submarine was an okay experience overall. The food itself wasn't the best, my sandwich was pretty plain, the provolone cheese tasted a bit spoiled, and the turkey wasn't the greatest I've had. It was edible, but nothing that really stood out. The place has more of a hole-in-the-wall vibe, not fancy at all, but still has a certain charm. What really made the visit better was the service. The people who worked there were very nice, friendly, and welcoming, which I appreciated. This place is so good! Sure, it's not the coolest location and it's not the prettiest shop, but great googley moogley are the sandwiches divine! My favorite is the super, but all the steak sandwiches are awesome. The ladies that work there are kind and speedy. Oh, and it's cheap! I am all about supporting my local businesses. Especially, if it has been in a business for a long time and looks like a true hole in the wall. Usually, they are doing something right to keep them a float for all of these years. However, that was not the case here. I had read that their cheesesteaks were pretty decent from the other reviewers. I came in and got a 14 inch mushroom steak. It was lacking in meat and flavor, it was very bland. They did not have much as far as sauces to help boost up the flavor either. A bottle of A1 and tobasco. Also the 14 inch was just 2 7 inch subs. That proved to be good because I ended up just taking home the other half and adding some extra ingredients at home to make it a little bit better tasting. I brought my lunch today for work. Except, I needed to go on a bank errand during my break. After leaving the bank Mr. Submarine caught my eye AGAIN. I had to stop. I needed to find out if this place had a good sub. Sandwiches are my favorite food, and some how the name reminds me of The Beatles, Yellow Submarine. The first thing I noticed walking in is how clean it looked and smelled in there. I like when restaurants take pride in cleanliness. The set-up here is counter staff. Order at the counter and pick-up at the counter. I asked for a recommendation from the cashier. He highlighted numerous choices for me kindly. I'm into spicy foods so I ordered the Hot Pepper Philly. I walked around the place after I placed my order and look around. The decor here was pretty minimal, but decent for a family ran sub shop. I notice they have all kinds of things to fit everyones taste. From salads to wings I say they have a fitting menu. The prices here are more than reasonable, so this beats out other places around here in value. I picked up my sandwich and bought a whole pickle. It's been a while since I've had one of those. When I got to work I dove right in. This sandwich is huge! 7 inches, unlike the 6 inches you get anywhere else and priced at $3.89! BOOM! I'm sorry, but thats exciting for me. Great taste, the beef was very well seasoned and the veggies were fresh. They use mayo and a house dressing that gives the sub a kick. The bread was nice, warm, and soft. This is the first sub that actually held together through the entire session. When I want very delicious and inexpensive subs, this will be my spot. Let's just get this out of the way: Yes, this spot is what many would consider "in the hood". Ummm...this is not the real hood. No it's not West U or The Heights, but it's not the SW side either. ijs... Service was friendly & quick. On to the important stuff: the food! They've got the sub shop standards & a variety of Philly steak style options. What's different about this place is they serve their sammies warm, but will serve cold on request. Their subs are also either 7" or 14" vs. 6/12. I had the Italian sub & man was it delish! They weren't skimpy on the meat or the veggies. Veggies were fresh & it had the perfect amount of mayo, oil & vinegar. But man oh man that freakin bread stole the show! It was sooo warm & soft. Tasted like it'd come straight from the oven to the prep table. Def not your standard chain sub bread. I'm tempted to ask if they'll just sell me the bread solo. It's just that good. And you cannot beat the price. Their sub combo is a 7" sub, drink, chips & a cookie for $6! Most 7" subs are around $3 if you don't want the combo. They also have wings & I saw a sign for papusas. Okay, so I've been getting philly cheesesteak sandwiches here for a few years. It's certainly a hole in the wall, but the food is great. The inside is rather small and not incredibly comfortable, but it reminds me of the little "ma and pa" sub shops that I eat at whenever I'm in New England. You don't get too much of that down here. It's just very cozy and laid back, but I normally just order to go. My last visit here, I ordered "The Grand Philly" It comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mushroom. The bread was perfectly fresh. Hot pepper philly 14" This sandwich could have easily been for two. Their sandwiches have an authentic taste of what you would expect from a mom and pop sandwich shop. The portion of meat was very generous and the peppers were not over bearing as to steal away from the philly steak taste. In addition to the sandwich I got an order of fries. The fries were a nice golden brown just how I like them. In all my total was around $11. Nice deal for two even though I ate by myself. A popular choice is their Philly cheesesteak. The cheesesteak comes in several variations that fit differing tastes. They also carry a veggie friendly sub alongside standard choices of ham, turkey, roast beef, etc. They also have soups, salads and gyros on hand. You place your order at the counter, usually by number and choosing either the 7 or 14 inch portion. The 7 inch is plenty, but you do get better bang for your buck with the larger size. As you wait, you can enjoy reading that day's Chronicle or browse at the posters displaying illustrations of New York City while the aroma of your food fills the room. Slightly disappointed. I got the 7" steak and cheese all the way with toppings and a side of fries. On the plus side this place is cheap, less than $7 for these two things. Downside was the place had a funky smell when I walked in, though it was clean. Several other reviewers raved about the bread but I just thought it was OK. The sandwich was big, but the bread sort of overwhelmed the fillings and they didn't have a lot of flavor impact. I used quite a bit of habanero sauce to fill out the flavor (I eat way spicier than the average Yelper.) The fries, while probably frozen, were cooked nicely but had no salt so you have to shake it on at the table. Last annoyance was they included no napkins and I had to wait for them to get it behind the counter. Unfortunately Papa Geno's judging by all the locations and their Yelp great reviews, has this place easily beat. read more

I wouldn't say that this place is any better than subway, but because it's local and not a chain, I'm definitely more likely to support it. Cookies were just mediocre as well. Great little place to get food from while you're at the washateria. Ordered the ham & cheese, it was great. Bread toasted perfectly, ham was tender, had not pieces of fat in ham, and ham was not overly salty or wet. Fast service, and good customer service. read more

The kitchen was dark with one flourecent light flickering and it looked really dirty back there, let alone seating. I was looking for a new philly cheesesteak place and found this spot via yelp - all I got was bad food and a bellyache. One thing a few of the less positive reviews mentioned was that it's in the "hood" or a "ghetto area," which I did not find to be true. The area was fine. That, however, is where the positives end for Mr. Submarine. The first thing I noticed was that it smelled kind of musty (but it did appear clean and the decor was old but kept up). It was also dead silent. The service took forever (when I arrived at 1 pm on a weekday there was one gentleman there already eating, but it still took 20 minutes for my one sandwich to arrive). The philly cheesesteak was drier than the Sahara and only tasted of salt. The beef was WAY overcooked (no wonder it took 20 minutes), there were maybe 10 pieces of onion on the whole 14 in. sandwich, the bread was dry and tasteless, and the ratio of bread to meat was disappointing. I picked at it but most of it went in the trash. Also their soda machine wasn't working but they did have canned and bottled drinks. Chip selection was ok. Overall, I consider Subway to be the lowest rung of fast food sandwich places, but that would be 10 times better than Mr. Submarine. Needless to say, I will not be returning. read more
