I hadn't been at this location in years. I finally found seafood patties. They don't serve them that often. The patty in this location had too much breading and it was a bit spicy. For sides I chose cubed potatoes and pea salad. The potatoes were tender and not greasy. The pea salad would be better with the cheese cut in smaller pieces. There were several fish options being that it was a Friday during Lent, including salmon, trout and tilapia. I'm glad this Luby's hasn't closed. read more

Delicious food fresh/hot all the time and price is reasonable. Ms. Martha always is patient and friendly taking our orders. The restaurant is clean and family oriented. Food line always clean. I would recommend this entree's fry fish, country fried chicken, baked tilapia or baked chicken. This is a usual spot for my husband and I for years. We visit frequently and they are normally on point as far as the food. It's Luby's for when you want close to home cooking and don't feel like cooking. I always choose a salad, entree, and dessert. I stick with the Carrot Cake. This particular day was no different. The timing was good because we had beat the crowd. The steam table seemed to be fresh and of course my favorite cake. I had eaten all of my food selection. Chopped steak with cheese, macaroni and cheese and fried okra. Had put my to go portion to the side and was now eating the cherished carrot cake. I bit down and it was crunchy which it sometimes is because you get pecan shells but this particular time it was harder crunch and I spit out what was in my mouth to discover a broken piece of plate. I told our waitress which if you frequent Lubys you know they have waitress that get your condiments, clean the tables, and refresh your drinks. Some are more tip worthy than others if you know what I mean. When I called her over and showed her the broken piece of whatever it was, her response was well you know you eating at a restaurant. I was well aware of the point when I left my job to come to this establishment but I could only think about what could have happened to my tongue, my teeth at that moment. So the resolve was refund my money of course and no apology. When she presented it to the manager she said, I've got a void". The male manager was standing at the register and it seemed to be upset about the statement. He took his time and gave her the refund. Gives her a receipt and moves on to continue doing whatever. She returns to the table with a refund receipt. Where is my original receipt? Oh he has to go to the back to get that because they need to keep track of all voided receipts. That's not my problem or concern. It was the lack of concern for me. Give me my receipts and I will never return to this Lubys. Maybe the manager gets voids so frequently that he has lost his skill of apologizing to the customer for the experience. Maybe the waitress has seen people try to get over that she didn't realize people don't have to eat at your restaurant or any other and maybe they don't remember that several Lubys are no longer in business. So my response to that lack of customer service to both of them is to no visit anymore. Thank you ma'am and sir. The reason I am writing the review is because my experience was disappointing that people have lost the sensitivity to a customer who had a bad experience at your establishment. read more

Sadly this is the closest Lubys to our home. For some reason this is such a bad location. Employees are lovely but the food is always a let down. The fried fish is hard (over fried or re-fried perhaps), the baked fish has tough, hard edges, salad portions are small. Dessert section is sad and not much. Go to any other Lubys and enjoy great food, but this location has been bad for years. I recently got a pick up order. No tater sauce for fish and no dressing for salads. Ordered wheat roll but was given white. Side dishes were incorrect (black-eyed peas instead of spinach!) Regular chop steak but I ordered and paid for Angus (its a different shape). How can you get so many parts of the order wrong? All the others Lubys are fantastic....why cant this location improve? We would eat here much more if it was such a disappointment. read more

I ordered one of my favorite Luby's dishes - liver and onions! The onions were fine, but the liver lacked some of the flavor I'm used to. Also, the liver seemed tougher than in past orders. I suspect it had been sitting on the line for a while, as it was around 2 PM, so the lunch crowd was already gone. The carrot and raisin salad was good, as was the corn casserole! The liver was the only disappointment. I'll be back, though. I think they were just having an off day, given my past experiences there. read more

It's far from being the best in town but it's a nice little diner chain that used to be the biggest in the country, and is still one of the go-to places for sit down diner food, much better than IHOP or Denny's for me. read more

We used to visit the location quite often, but we no longer live near it. Anyhow, we stopped by today (they open at 11, and we got there at 11:38am), I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Luann Platter with macaroni & cheese and fried okra. First, they couldn't give me a receipt because the machine was out of paper, then I sat down to eat, and my steak was so cold that the "fried" batter was rubbery. I sent it back, and asked for a refund because I was too mad to even eat. They refused to give me a refund, so the server brought me a plate of chicken fried chicken, claiming that she paid the difference out of her own pocket because she remembered us (we always sit in the same booth). All they did was put the food in the microwave. I will never go back to Luby's again. read more

I came to this particular location to get lunch to go because I didn't feel like being Mr. Lonely and eating alone while listening to Bobby Vinton on my headphones. Anyway, just like your typical Luby's, I had to go through the whole cafeteria from one end to the other end before I pay. I decided to get a chicken fried chicken combo with corn and mac n cheese on the sides along with some wheat roll. When you order to go at this location, they put everything in separate containers. The fried chicken in its own box, each of the sides and the gravy in their own little containers. So there I was holding a meal box with three smaller containers stacked on top of it and as I approached the cashier, one of the containers fell and made a mess everywhere. The cashier saw what happened and immediately got up and got me a new one even before I had the chance to say anything. When she came back, I apologized for the mess and thanked her for bringing me a new side. She smiled and told me not to worry about it. I paid, I left. If you've been to Luby's, then you already know that the food at Luby's is usually pretty good. This location is no exception. Also, when you order the Combo (vs. the LuAnn platter) then you get a lot of food. No complaints about this particular location. Will definitely be back. read more

I remember the glory days of Luby's -- and in particular, this Luby's. People stood in line for delicious appealing meals. Not so anymore! Don't get me started on the pre-packaged salads in plastic. I don't even care. But the damned food was all cold! Haddock Almondine -- cold, and why was the fish gray? The fried okra -- cold. The corn casserole -- glommy and cold. The cornbread -- cold and too sweet. The black-eyed peas were the most edible item, and they were also -- you guessed it -- cold. It is truly sad to see how far this chain has declined. read more

Decided to try Luby's off 290 and 34th since I was in the area. In my 36 years of life, having had many cafeteria meals including Wyatt's, Piccadilly, many trips to Luby's etc. this was the absolute worst. Looks like they have a new vendor for their classic fried fish. It was terrible. I took three bites of this plate and threw the rest away. The dessert pie filling was grainy. This was inedible. There is nothing worse than getting excited for an experience you are used yo having and being so absolutely disappointed. If this is what we are getting now sober the acquisition, then we just need to go ahead and close the doors. This was abysmal. read more

As a life long Lubys fan, it is hard to give this review. Walking into this location was like going back 20 years in time but not in a good way. The place had poor lighting, and everything seemed old and worn out. There were only two people working in the line. All of the salads were pre-wrapped and the selection of entrees was about half of what you'd expect. The fried fish was over cooked and dry. There was a very small selection of sides and even those weren't like the past. The green beans used to be flavorful and cooked with bacon but these had almost no flavor. The desserts were much smaller than in the past. I was taking my food to go and near the door was a large table scattered with to-go bags, plastic utensil packs were scattered around and overall it was just junky. When I left I noted that at 6:30 p.m. there were eight cars in the parking lot. Sadly I now understand why. I hope this location is not indicative of how other Lubys are doing. Here's hoping ownership invests some money to bring this once great restaurant back to where it was 10 years ago. read more

Clean, well stocked with fresh food, happy staff, well organized, awesome manager. This location has a pretty nice turnover rate for food since lots of people frequent for lunch and the elderly come for senior discounts in the early evening. They have a variety of chickens, fish, steak & fresh veggies, sweet potatoes, rolls, cornbread & lots of desserts to choose. It's cafeteria style but not buffet. You choose your protein & 2 sides with bread which could range from Manager Special $6.99 to $10.99 for steak dishes. Drinks & dessert are extra. The food is not heavily seasoned more cooked on the healthy side which is nice. Oh they also have a salad bar you can add on. Check for the daily specials. Eh not a pleasant experience. And definitely not the old Lubys. The food was awesome. Everything was fresh and hot. My issue was with the waitresses, first of all it's very unprofessional to hear the waitresses fighting over who has what table. We needed A1 sauce and because we weren't that lady with the 2 braids table she never brought us the steak sauce. Our waitress was on the phone while we're sitting waiting on sauce. It was just a very ghetto situation. Seems that's the staff has a lot to figure out. I seen a lot of new faces because our old waitress took very good care of us. It's certainly not a place that's going to wow but if you grew up around here in the 90s, this is a taste of nostalgia. I have yet to find better liver and onions. I get the LuAnn platter and it doesn't disappoint. They food is hot and just how I request it. No complaints. Hope they stay in business. read more

My wife and I have frequented the Luby's at 290 & 34th (11250 Northwest Freeway) on and off for the past 15 years. To me, this location serves it purpose. Over the years, the staff has always seemed to be friendly. The entrées are OK. My favorite entre is the blackened chicken breast. I never visited this location until they tpre the tidwell location down. I can't dine in because it's a more of a drive than i like, but the to-go area has always been great. I go in, order quickly and my food is brought out to me fairly quick. This location, I've never had a problem with food wise. The fish and tarter sauce is still classic, thw mashed potatoes are good and i like the cabbage with the tomatoes in it. I visit once a week with zero issues. I mean it's Luby's, so I'm pretty sure you know this isn't a fine dining establishment. So don't visit here if that's what you're looking for. I drop in for lunch sometimes. Even called in to-go orders for dinner on the way home. Haven't had any problems with the food far as taste or freshness. Still not sure why, but Luby's fried fish w/ their tartar sauce win me every time! LOL The serving area is kept pretty clean. There's been a good number of times I've had to wait a bit for items to be prepped. Even basics like mac & cheese, fried fish, baked chicken, etc. never seem to be available. Maybe they don't make a lot at once because they're not extra busy even during the lunch hours? My issue is service. At times all staff are really nice, but most of my visits it's been a mix of a couple nice folks & the rest rude and crabby. I totally understand most of them are on their feet all day & some up in age. So my Southern girl courtesies go up a few notches when I'm here. Please & thank you go a long way! Which is why the huffing & puffing isn't necessary. Neither is the slapping my salad in the bowl like you're mad about it. Since I'm not serving saltiness while there, it'd be nice to get extra salt with my meal. Again, I know it's Luby's so I can look past that for the most part. It's not like I'm going to sit there for a 20 course tasting event. It's still a good spot to grab a quick meal that's a little better for you than a $1 menu. read more

I used to eat Luby's all the time when I was younger and then I stopped for many many years. Recently, one of my friends just really love Luby's. To appease his appetite I decided to give them a try again. This particular location actually does a good job. The man behind the counter near the entrees is a trip! He screams out all kinds of stuff as you enter and when you order. You can tell he clearly loves his job. His associates, not so much by the looks on their faces, but we at least enjoy his enthusiasm. The Luann platter is my go to, but if I'm feeling hungry the full sized combo is plenty. I've rotated my entree choices, from the chicken fried chicken, to the baked fish. The sides are somewhat healthy and fresh. Overall, if we do not know what to eat we swing by Luby's since it is affordable and we know what we are going to get. read more

I must say that this Luby's beats the pants off the other location that I normally go to for the "rise & shine" breakfast buffet (only till 11am). This location has a better selection and looks better. The staff had better attitudes and were more engaging than the one off I-45 and Victory location. The waiters and waitress were definitely there to serve and work for those tips! They were awesome! The food was even better prepared than the other location. As far as Luby's go this one is at the bottom of the barrel from food quality standpoint. Mashed potatoes were gritty like there was sand in them. Chicken fried chicken looked and tasted like it was at least an hour or two old sitting under the heat lamp. Liver and onions were drenched and dripping with grease. The fried okra was even off. Bottom of the bowl had pools of dark grease. To me this signals they aren't changing their grease out enough. Most Luby's are generally a great place to get a quick home style southern comfort food dinner. This place was not one of them. Definitely will not be back to this location. read more

Thanksgiving 2022 was a huge ripoff. Facebook price was $10.99. The website was $11.99. When we got there the price was $13.99. And of course the To Go section was closed. We waited in line for 30 minutes. There was ONE holiday side and only 2 dessert selections, a SLIVER of pumpkin or pecan pie. Then they had the nerve to charge us 50 cents for our to go boxes! Usually chain restaurants are the same no matter which one you go to but this particular location is sorely lacking. The servers in the line were very friendly and helpful. The only reason for the subpar review is the food. My daughters chicken fried steak was under cooked as well as the replacement she got . The okra tasted funny and the potatoes had the same type of tasted and were unusually hard. On my way out I ran into the manager and brought it to his attention. He was more than willing to give me the money. But, instead offered any dessert. Listen to music, same tune over and over, with interruption announcing they are busy but please continue to hold. After 10 minutes, walked in kitchen, stirred my food cooking, went to drawer got a spatula, then went to cabinet and got a pot lid, opened a drink , still holding...gonna cry uncle and hang up. This was our first time trying Luby's for breakfast and it was not a welcoming one. The front door was open so I dropped off my husband at the front door since he had to use a walker to stabilize his steps. Once we walked in the workers just stared at us as if we we're about to rob them. No one talk to us as I asked questions, is the place open?, or are they serving breakfast? no one answered until a guy from the back came in and told us to leave as we were too early and they do not serve breakfast! Left the hospital on Christmas and was starving. Decided to eat at Luby's ( the one near the hospital ) We had a horrible experience- the food was cold all 6 of us had cold food. I understand it's Christmas and limited staff however -Why take my plate and heat it in their microwave and bring it back to me and tell me they had to warm it up because they were out of the turkey.. # 1 that's a health violation (A BIG NO NO) Ms Rita was our server and bless her heart, she was exhausted and over worked She felt so bad that she couldn't get a replacement plate. So, I can tell you why I am here today, regardless of the fact that I know that I will probably be disappointed when I go to Luby's anymore. Today I came and go a ton of food - combo plate with 3 sides, a salad and a pieve of pie. It is a ton. I hadn't eaten all day and was ready to eat my hand, so my expectations were not high. I just wanted some comfort food. I have had hospital food that was better than my meal today. My Baked Fish Amandine is cold. I sat right down and immediately started to eat, so this is not because I was slow getting to it. Thw mac and cheese was lukewarm, as well. And, it tastes like powdered cheese with milk powder and water. I can verify that no real cheese was used while making this dish, judging by how it tastes. The chocolate icebox pie tastes similar. There was definitely something off about the milk used to make the filling - it virtually has almost no flavor - definitely a pre-packaged deal. Obviously Luby's is up to it's old ineffectual cost cutting techniques again. It seems to me that if you are going to alter a recipe to help the cost, you can not alter the quality of the finished product. The pie and mac and cheese are a shadow of the dishes that they once were. It is my suggestion. If you would like these dishes. That you purchase a box of mac and cheese at the.store because there would be more flavor. Jello pudding cups, even the sugar-free ones, have more flavor than this pie. The best part of this meal is the broccoli rice casserole. They actually put a slice of cheese on top and added a bit of seasoning to the dish. So, not all is lost but I would not recommend this place to anyone again. I'm making the trek to Cleburne Cafeteria the next time I want cafeteria food. I would rather drive 30-40 minites to a better place than waste my time with this over-priced crap again. read more
