Came in awaiting being seated, one lady was curious about 'what I needed' as 8 stood at the hostess stand where is said see hostess to be seated. Told her id like to get a seat. Same experience as others when it comes to being seated and I was the only one there waiting. Went to order food and asked for a milk shake. Well they didn't have any ice cream. Went to order a turkey sandwich well there wasn't any turkey either. I just ended up eating oily French fries and a drink and went somewhere else for lunch. My friend also felt the food and agreed it was cold. Instead of addressing the issue, he offered a military discount, which didn't really fix the problem. What made it worse was overhearing him tell another server "they're just trying to get free food," which was completely untrue. Have you ever seen the Santa Clause? Surely you have. It came out 30 years ago. In the movie, Tim Allen's character burns Christmas Eve dinner and ends up taking his son to Denny's, the only restaurant open late on Christmas Eve. While we were watching the movie in early December, I joked "Wouldn't it be funny to go to Denny's for dinner on Christmas Eve?" Well, you can't joke like that in my family, because my daughters were all in. So there we were. At Denny's in NKC around 7 pm on Christmas Eve. I hadn't been in a Denny's since probably before the Santa Clause came out. The first thing I noticed was how clean it was. Better than I expected. There were people dining but it wasn't busy at all. Our obviously seasoned server was hurried but efficient. She seemed to have to keep the cook staff on task while also waiting tables. Our table of 7 all ordered breakfast and opinions were split. The chicken fried steak people were generally dissatisfied. The French toast/pancake people were much happier. My only criticisms were the sour orange juice and musty iced tea. Given the choice though, I'd go with the OJ. There are myriad good breakfast spots in KC but not many are open past 2 pm. Denny's is open 24 hours and a great option for a solid breakfast. Ah Denny's, one of the most riffed on chains in America. They certainly are an easy target being in all 50 states and over a 60 year history. They come across as a poor man's Applebee's or an elegant Waffle House. The 24 hour breakfast menu and the ubiquitous "Grand Slam's" have made Denny's a household name and a slang term for culinary mediocrity. But; I come not to bury Denny's, but to praise them. I actually hadn't been in a Denny's since back the last century, I usually frequented the now razed location downtown, or as we called it - "Dime Bag Denny's", since there always seemed to be something sketchy going on in the parking lot or the back booths. My wife came of age in Phoenix and enjoyed going to the "Gay Denny's" located near the gay bar district and with usually a drag queen or two having a meal or coffee. My first visit of the 21st century this week was in celebration of National Pancake Day! A 2 stack of fluffy pancakes topped with sliced bananas, and strawberry's (my waitress told me they were out of strawberries and substituting blueberries but that was a lie) fake butter and artificial maple syrup - oh yeah, the simple things in life! I also had a side of bacon, eggs and hash browns that were perfunctory. I actually ordered sausage but received bacon. With the wrong meat and the fruit lie, I could easily be angry with my server, but how can you get upset with a waitress that is a dead ringer for Mamie Eisenhower; if the former first lady was a chain smoker and still alive at age 120. She kept my coffee cup filled and repeatedly called me "Darlin", and isn't that about all we can hope for in this day and age of lowered expectations and rampant capitalism. It's reassuring to know that there are still places that are common to the entire American populace that will serve you a Moons over my Hammy sandwich at 4am or a slab of Cookie Dough pancakes at 6pm by a workforce that is lacking health insurance and just waiting for their next smoke break. On October 2, 2024, me and a friend met for breakfast at Denny's and were pleasantly surprised with flawless service and overall experience. We were hesitant to come because we had unpleasant experiences in the past, but were pleasantly surprised to have had a phenomenal breakfast! As we walked in, we were warmly greeted by a lively gentleman who initially appeared to be the manager, but happened to be the server, named Nick. This morning I had woken up (at 4:30 am) next to Galaxie and thought to myself I NEED dennys! So in the early hours of the morn me and Galaxie made the 0.8 mile trek to the nearest dennys to my homeless camp. We walked for hours through weeds, grass, sidewalk and gravel to the dennys. After the day long trip we finally made it to the Dennys we desired. When we got in the facility there were a line of 5 people! This is SUPER irritating because we had just walked 0.8 MILES! This is the LONGEST hike I've ever done in one day. This is super impressive considering I usually have Galaxie carry my hefty body to wherever I need to go. Galaxie is extremely BUFF and goes to the gym 3 times a year! After sitting in line for 6 MINUTES I finally ordered 5 burgers, 2 pancakes and extra mayo, I had a burning desire to actually pay for this meal, but because I'm homeless I could not afford the meal. But the almost INHUMAN employee said he could ONLY give us 8% off! After DEMANDING to have a nice long chat with his manager he informed me that he WAS the manager! So I went over to a dense looking couple and SPAT at them to fork over money so he had enough money to pay for the food. And to my pleasure they gave us $68 which was all the cash they had on them. (I have to give credit to Galaxie for intimidating the couple) Luckily our meal only came to $67.69 after tax and the discount. We shoved the grub down our throats so fast that some punks were throwing us DISGUSTED looks.
