A lot of brunch places lean towards one and just have a few dishes for the other. The Homesteader not only gives you several choices on the menu, but also has specials on the menu boards as well! If you enjoy a mimosas with your meal, they have single glasses, flights and of carafes for sharing! And you have bubbly choices to meet your preferred price point. We enjoyed it immensely. Carafes tend to serve around 4-6 people depending on portions pour, but you get to manage that yourself. I ended up with the Farmer's Breakfast. You pick 4 from a selection of Mains, Sides and Breads. I got Eggs, Bacon, Roasted Red Potatoes and a slice of French toast. It was a lot of food. We also ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy for the table to try. It was pretty good. The gravy was better than the biscuits, but that's rarely the case so I'm very pleased with that! I can't say enough great things about Homesreader! The food, the drinks, the atmosphere -- everything was top-notch. We ordered the Bloody Mary carafe, and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had -- perfectly spiced, fresh, and so easy to keep refilling without waiting on refills. Breakfast was equally impressive. The Avocado Toast was fresh and flavorful, the Ham's Benedict was rich and perfectly balanced, and the Fried Green Tomato Benedict was a total standout -- creative, delicious, and beautifully presented. It breaks my heart to know that next week is their last week open. This is exactly the kind of place I would've come back to time and time again. Still a spot to grab a meal! Impromptu decision early afternoon and called to check in on wait and to be added to waitlist... graciously hostess obliged! Delicious. I'm not a big go-out-to-eat for brunch kind of gal, because most places you just pay extra for basic breakfast food that you can cook at home for like $2. This place is a step up! ALL their brunch food was delicious and elevated the humble egg, biscuit, and even ketchup! It all was made fresh and well-seasoned. Ketchup and honey butter was made in house! Waitress was awesome too. Keep in mind you have to park in the lot across the street and validate your parking via the QR code at the check in table in the restaurant. The Homesteader had been on my list for a LONG time, so when my family asked me to find a restaurant for brunch after the zoo run that could accomodate a big crowd and take a reservation this place was on my radar. I was really impressed because they could actually accommodate us. I needed to make a reservation for a Saturday morning for 10 and after some research I quickly found that most places either don't take weekend brunch reservations or don't take them online for more than 8. Honestly I get why and it's fair, but it limited us on where to go. I was insanely grateful that the Homesteader made this easy peasy for us to book. The run was on a stormy Saturday and as we all finished the race we realized the rain (and thunder, and lighting) was right on our heels! This changed our plans a bit as we had planned to hang out at the zoo for a bit longer and let the kiddos run around. Instead, we ran to our cars to avoid the thunderstorm! So, what did this do to our brunch plans? It made us about 30 minutes early. We decided to go and try our luck anyways. My parents made it there first and the Homesteader was super kind and had our table ready so we were able to sit down and eat a bit earlier than expected. Now to the restaurant (I know, you've waited long enough!). I would describe this place as a hyper local, cozy, breakfast and brunch cafe. It feels warm, welcoming, and like it's been around for a while when you come inside. The folks working were honestly some of the best I've ever encountered. SO friendly, so happy to answer questions, and so kind to my kid. Honestly, they really made our visit a great one. Where to start-- The chocolate filled beignets were too crispy but you can tell when cooked right they would melt in your mouth. The rest of the breakfast was over cooked, bland, eggs that should have been poached for the benedict's were hard, eggs ordered over easy with my farmers meal were also over cooked. Biscuits and gravy were good, - the biscuits were the best of the meal. The chilaquiles tostadas were "ok" but the egg was actually cooked right. (When I asked if she would get it again her answer was, no.) Pork belly on the biscuit benedict had no seasoning, and didn't melt like belly should. Their house made ketchup could be spectacular for those who enjoy the overly sweet ketchup. I will say my BIL said his Farmers breakfast with English muffin and potatoes was good. Let me begin by prefacing the 3 stars are for the incredible service and the fried green tomatoes. I made a conscious decision to try this breakfast spot while pondering someplace I'd never been for our anniversary. Upon entering the restaurant there were a few others scattered about...not crowded, but not empty either. The decor was nice and I enjoyed reading the quotes that were displayed in several places. We were both greeted and escorted to our table with no wait. Our waitress was fairly quick to acknowledge our presence and let us know she'd be with us shortly. Quite frankly, she had me at hello. In that short moment she was very welcoming and pleasingly pleasant. I don't see a whole lot of that anymore so I was Appreciative. Emma was patient as she took our order and was helpful in suggesting certain options to us. I was so glad to see various vegetable choices on the breakfast menu. Fried green tomatoes were an excellent choice for starters. They were huge, nicely breaded, piping hot and hit the spot! Two thumbs up on these! The scrambled eggs, turkey sausage and roasted potatoes were not tasty at all. I can't figure out how you can mess these items up, but they certainly left something to be desired. Tried this super cute brunch spot this past Saturday for my daughters birthday weekend get together. It was packed, so I knew immediately the food was going to be amazing! And I really appreciated the validated parking. But the food should be the star and it just wasn't great. My companion had the chicken and waffles and while it looked really good, he said it was meh. He did mention that the coffee was pretty good. I had the French toast and it was overdone, but the bacon was cooked perfectly. I came across this restaurant in a strange way when I was researching an old Hotel that I believe used to be on the site of the Western Union building. Decided to give it a try based on a few offerings we saw from their online menu. We found metered parking right in front of the restaurant but we learned that patrons can use the parking lot to the west. A starter we tried was the fried green tomatoes. They were crispy and not greasy at all, we enjoyed them very much. We also tried the chocolate filled beignets...soft and crispy, the cinnamon roll that was super sweet and generously iced with cream cheese frosting. Last, we shared an order of biscuit egg benedict...which came with bison sausage gravy and a biscuit that we loved as well as pork belly. Parking appears to be plentiful but bring quarters: evidently Kansas City is still not set up with parking meters equipped to accept credit cards. The dining rooms was virtually empty but I did arrive at 10:30 AM on a Tuesday so nothing unexpected. I was really happy they were open from 9:00-2:00 on weekdays. According to my very pleasant and attentive server Katie, their scratch kitchen is farm to table which is certainly on trend. The table is stocked with real maple syrup-always a very good sign. The cloth napkins were a nice surprise. I ordered French Toast which I admit is super boring but I'm craving a sweet breakfast today The OJ was standard juice from a carton although I was hoping it would have been fresh squeezed (fresh is insanely expensive but always a treat). My bacon was hot and crisp while the French toast was just warm but nicely cooked and tasty. 4 half slices of a farmhouse style bread toasted and topped with confectioners sugar. Okay let me just start off first that the waitress was great and the ambience is good. However, the tostada was so bland to me. We are from california and just expected a big robust flavor but did not get that. I never salt my food, EVER, and i had to add salt and hot sauce on top of everything you see here(which should not be the case) Note to the cooks : The meat alone should have more flavor than all the other components and i think that would have made this dish perfect. I still finished most of my dish because it was not unbearable. I think others would love this dish, i just had big expectations My boyfriend: he loved his dish and ate the whole thing. We decided to get a group together for brunch at Homesteader, as part of restaurant week. We had a group of 11, so not a small group. First, it's in a cool area, just south of the City Market. Our waitress, Jalisa (I hope I spelled it right) was awesome. She didn't miss a thing. The food was really good, and lots of it. No one went away hungry or disappointed. I know my fellow Yelp Elites seem to be a unanimous 5-stars at The Homesteader, but I'm going to have to come in at about a 4.5. I was in town for a wedding and my husband needed to purchase a belt and socks beforehand (that he forgot), so we headed towards the City Market area. When we were done we came across The Homesteader Cafe (on Yelp of course), so my family walked from our hotel to meet us there. They were pretty busy on a Saturday morning, so I was super thankful that they were able to seat our party of 8 outside. We didn't have to wait for our whole party to be seated which was nice, because the other 6 were about 10 minutes behind us. While we waited to order we actually ended up being extras in some sort of blind date show! I kid you not... they were filming right by our table! Very random, but entertaining to say the least. Knowing we had a full day ahead of adult beverages, I opted for an ice coffee to start which was really good. I ordered it before looking at the menu and immediately realized I was missing out on some fun options! So after I finished that I ended up ordering the Percolator to drink, which is midnight espresso, 5 Farms Irish cream, brown sugar simple, and iced coffee. Just what I needed to get a day of wedding festivities started! It was delicious. To eat I went with the Vegan Breakfast Burrito. I'm not vegan, but it honestly just sounded good! And it was! Sweet potato hash, spinach, tomatoes, black beans, and salsa with your choice of side. I think I totally confused my server when I ordered a side of bacon (total giveaway that I'm not vegan haha). Our server was extremely down to Earth and funny. He was on top of is and our party of 8 always had what we needed. Overall this seems like an awesome local option, especially for brunch. If I lived here I'd love to explore more of the menu. The only downfall, which ended up being a big one, is that my mother got food-poisoning from her meal :( She was the only one that ordered the Chilaquiles Tostadas which comes with tomatillo salsa, shredded pork, black beans, a sunny side up egg, queso fresco, and radish. Let's talk about a hidden gem. This place barely popped up on my Yelp recommendations but IT IS WORTH STOPPING IN. The Homesteader Cafe was easily the best food we had on our entire trip to KCMO. You can not afford to skip this mouth-watering, lip smacking, plate licking chicken & waffle combo. I don't know what the chef does to make this chicken taste like someone's momma's secret recipe but I need it. The breading was crispy. The chicken fell apart in my mouth like some sort of food-tastic Humpty Dumpty fall. Not to mention, the waffle was good. The French toast was unforgettable. Delicious. Scrumptious. So good I'm salivating just thinking about it. The bacon? One word-- crispy. It was just the way I like it!
