Gotta be Denny's !
Bert G.

What would travelers do without Denny's? Don't answer, that's rhetorical. The Denny's on Broadway in King City is just fine, and I'm a fan. I like traveling on Highway 101 rather than Freeway 5 when I'm traversing the Salinas Valley. One reason is this Denny's. We were greeted and seated promptly, and our orders came out very swiftly. Mine was (I admit) Moons Over My Hammy ($9.99). And yes, it was excellent, though not in a cardiac sense. My wife ordered an astounding Cobb Salad ($7.79), which she could not finish, so I did, perhaps mitigating the damage done by Hammy. The restrooms were clean, at least mine was. It was a great meal and rest stop for us, even though travel on 101 is pretty relaxing anyway.

Good price point for the quality of food you get. Food is what you would expect from a chain. Nothing to write home about but hits the spot.

TIKI DAVE has had a love affair with NEPENTHE ever since his parents started taking him there when…read morehe was an itty bitty. This place is pure magic. Big Sur is pure magic. Big Sur even healed my wheelchair bound mother in her 30's? when she fell ill and stayed with the Pfeiffer family back in the '70s for a couple of months. Despite whatever inclimate weather on the Monterey Peninsula, whenever you pass Big Sur and go up over the hill past Ventana and Post Ranch to Nepenthe, it is always sunshine. Well, except for last weekend. But we didn't care. Our usual favorite spot is through the restaurant out on the back deck but they were, as always, mobbed so we grabbed a drink at the beautiful bar and waited about 30 minutes for an edge spot out front. When I started going to Nepenthe, the Ambrosia Burgers (a must have) were $5...Now they are about $28. For all the haters who complain about that price tag, realize you are on the edge of the world with zero cares aside from perhaps some difficult parking because it is such a popular place. But again, everything about Nepenthe is pure magic. For my wife and I, we split a bottle of Chardonnay for a very reasonable price as well as the Ambrosia Burger with the absolute mandatory side of bean salad. TIKI DAVE is serious; the bean salad has been a favorite for years and years and years. The fresh herbs with the garbanzos and kidneys, well, for fear of being redundant, the combination is magic. And that burger continues to be incredible. And frankly splitting the burger, beans and a half basket of fries (which really is even enough for a family of 4) are plenty. TIKI DAVE adores this place and it has survived years of local fires. The store down below is also amazing, full of unique things, art, jewelry, cards, decor, everything interesting. TIKI DAVE has been going to NEPENTHE for years and years and years. I have all sorts of local tips; please reach out to me and follow me on socials for all sorts of tips!

Haven't been to Nepenthe in a few years and was really looking forward to returning, but left…read morepretty disappointed this time around. The setting is still beautiful (when not socked in), but the food didn't match the experience or the price point. The menu felt limited and underwhelming, especially given how much everything costs. I had the chicken sandwich, which was $32, and it was dry and pretty flavorless. The fries were an additional $15 and arrived hard, like they'd been sitting too long. The one bright spot was the chocolate cake, it was genuinely good, but at $21, it still felt hard to justify. I don't mind paying premium prices, especially in a place like Big Sur, but you expect the food to back it up. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. Service was fine, nothing remarkable, food took a long time to come out. Overall, you're paying for the view more than the food, and this time that just wasn't enough for me to feel it was worth it.

The food and the views are INCREDIBLE! But the service is questionable?…read more We stayed at Ragged Point for 3 days for our Honeymoon and ate at this restaurant several times. What we discovered is the night shift and day shift are two completely different vibes. The Day Shift is happy to check in on you, accommodating, and kind. The Night Shift could genuinely not care if you're there. After being sat pretty quickly on a not so busy Tuesday Night, we watched everyone around us be served for 40 minutes before I could get anyone's attention. Lo and behold, the only person I could grab was the incredibly kind hostess who ended up taking our order. Once the server saw that we were actually being helped he decided he wanted to be our server...kind of? No apologies, nothing. And then he performed his disappearing act again. The hostess ended up coming back to check in on us and gave us some cheesecake. Get this girl a serving position. The Pro's: The Butternut Squash Salad, Cheesecake, Pancakes, Classic Breakfast, and Soup of the Day were phenomenal. The views, gorgeous. The morning crew, lovely. The Hostess with pearl earrings, nice. The Con's: Being ignored by every server and busser with zero accountability. RIP It's a great spot, and perfect for breakfast. Hopefully they can figure out dinner service if they want people to eat.
