a man standing in front of a diner
    Deborah N.

Rating should be 2 stars, but giving 3 stars only because of our server, Brenda. We stopped here for breakfast on our way to International Falls, MN. It was right after their breakfast rush and tables still needed cleared. Short staffing is an issue across the nation and it is the same story here. The manager and cooks were loud and grumpy. Thankfully, we had a friendly, hard working waitress, named Brenda. She smiled even though the other staff working , were grumbling and complaining about customers, each other and food order mixups. These are challenging times for restaurants. We waited a bit for our food, but it came and was fine. It's typical Denny's food. The classic diner style is nice, but this one could use some TLC and repairs. Restroom fixtures were broken and sitting on the floor. I do feel staff were overwhelmed and stressed.

Since this was our first time, we had no idea that it was a 'seat yourself' type of place and there were no signs indicating so. We stood at the door being stared at by the patrons and the employees. It took several minutes for someone to tell us we could sit wherever. Finally, our waitress stopped over, took our drink order, but because we weren't ready, she left. She didn't come back for more than 15 minutes. She did apologize, but it was far too long. Prices were reasonable and two specials were offered - our kinda place! My husband took part in one of those specials and ordered the country fried steak and eggs. I ordered the regular steak and eggs. We did substitute an order of toast for the Swedish pancakes (gotta!) It took a really long time for our food to come, which was disappointing. Food did come out hot and my husband was a big fan of the country fried steak. I didn't think the Swedish pancakes were anything I would HAVE to order a second time, but I'm glad we tried them. The hashbrowns were probably the highlight of breakfast. A waitress did stop by with a dum dum for kids, which was a cute added touch!

There are plenty of tables that aren't crowded too close together. Staff was extremely friendly. Everyone around us appeared to be eating breakfast, and it all looked good. However, since it is a Swedish restaurant we decided to order the meatballs and lefse. Both had average flavor, but wasn't anything special. The gravy on the meatballs were under whelming. I don't think I would order them again but I definitely want to go back and try their breakfast.

Note that you have to order here before being seated. Not too bad but does put the pressure on to order quickly so you can be seated before others. I went with the turkey melt and upgraded to fries and my partner got a turkey club with a fries upgrade. Together, this meal totaled just over $40 (no extra drink, we got waters). I feel bad giving a low score because of this but I do have to mention that the prices feel much higher than the quality of the food. Yes, we added fries instead of chips which might be the cause for the higher prices, but you can get two well made burgers for less than this so it doesn't feel justified. Additionally, the food was good but not great. My tuna melt lacked a bit of flavoring and only tasted of mayo. Normally this would be fine for me but not when I paid above average for my food. This really is a nice restaurant and in an area that doesn't have too many of those. Our waitress was very attentive (almost too attentive) and the service was good but I don't think I'd choose to visit again.

As soon as I announced I was going to Hinckley everyone who had been told me I just had to try Tobie's. What makes Tobies special is the combination of comfort food, an incredible bakery, and the nostalgic feeling that comes with walking through the doors. Fresh-baked breads, pastries, pies, cookies, and their famous caramel rolls line the bakery shelves, while their signature cornbread is a favorite that many visitors take home. Be sure to browse the gift shop, where you'll find locally made products, snacks, and their popular popcorn blends that make great road trip treats or souvenirs. Whether you're stopping for breakfast before exploring the area, grabbing lunch on your way to a Hinckley Knights game, or picking up baked goods for the drive home, Tobies is part of the experience. Our favorites were the apple fritter and the caramel roll. We also picked up bread and English muffins. If we had any more room we would have tried the ice cream, but there is always next time.

We made our stop about 8am on a Sunday in June. We didn't go to the sit-down restaurant, just the bakery counter. We picked out an apple fritter, maple fried roll, and cinnamon roll. My husband had a coffee, too. I'm very glad they had napkins and also packaged moist towelettes for us to take as we headed out. Everything was quite good. The apple fritter was special because it was still warm, and so fresh that it still had an airy texture. The bite of maple fried roll I had was good. The bulk of the cinnamon roll was mine, and wow, it was fantastic. I loved the generous amount of frosting, and the bread was soft and good. There are many more things here I want to try, but they will need to wait for another trip north!
