We had an appointment today for my daughter at Dental Smiles 4 Kids Pediatric Dentistry, located at 18-15 Francis Lewis Blvd, Whitestone, NY 11357. She was having significant tooth pain and needed attention. Unfortunately, we arrived about 10 minutes late because there was an accident on the way and some streets were closed. I understand offices have schedules and policies, and I respect that. However, I was disappointed with the way the situation was handled. We were told the doctor could not see my daughter because they were closing at 5 PM and there was not enough time, so we had to reschedule almost 3 weeks later. What bothered me most was the way we were spoken to at the front desk. I felt the interaction lacked compassion and understanding, especially considering my daughter was in pain and had already missed school that day. We have been patients at this office for many years because Dr. Kourtsounis ("Dr. K") has always been an excellent and caring doctor. Why do they even have front desk positions you call for an appointment and it's the worst automated system I've encountered since I've touched a windows 98 computer. How do you manage to find such a terrible scheduling system ? It's an issue every single time. My son went for cavities work and was given anesthesia and has left his lip swollen for 2-3 days and plus it's white. I called the office where nobody picks up. Then I get a message saying to schedule an appointment. Once again one of the most useless phone numbers I've encountered. Here is screenshots of their AI at work. It's such a shame because the office is clean , environment is good but with such a terrible system for their clients. I went to the office and the hours posted online aren't even correct. After researching what dentists would be best for my toddler, I ended up going to Dental Smiles 4 Kids. My toddler's first 4 appointments were fine, the staff and dentist were professional. I really appreciate Dr. Laura Sakhaee's patience and kindness shown to my toddler who was squirmy. However, on my last visit in June, I had an eye opening experience. Instead of Dr. Laura Sakhaee, Dr. Dina Serna was whom my toddler had seen. Dr. Serna was unprofessional, impatient, rude, and had no bedside manners. The moment she stepped in, it felt like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed. After firmly refusing sedation, it was like a switch flipped on her. She was impatient and not friendly to my toddler who was laying on the patient chair. She had cut me off and said, word for word, "It looks like he isn't going to cooperate and I have a lot of patients behind you to attend to." hinting for me to get the heck out of there. What kind of doctor says this to a patient?! you have more patients lined up behind you, so if this one isn't as cooperative you're just going to dismiss them instead of finding a better resolution? Where is the professionalism? Ever heard of such a thing called bedside manners? I know Dr. Sakhaee would have NEVER said this and would try her best to console my toddler to finish whatever needed to be done. Not every child is going to sit still and will squirm or cry. But I have never met a doctor dismissing us like that. The front desk staff normally is friendly as well but that day probably was under the "Dr. Serna" effect and was so rude too. This place offers a balloon to kids after their visit and all I said to the front desk was could I have a balloon for my child? Both the front desk yelled out with an attitude, it's right there down the hall. If you would like your child to have a rude and unprofessional experience, this is the place to go. This is the greatest experience a kid can have there are two tablets for the kids to play and two large tv's with a big seating area. Great designs the staff was absolutely fantastic very nice. This is great for when you're waiting for your turn. When you go into the room there is a tv for the kid to watch while their teeth is being taken care of. The dentists and dental hygienist are phenomenal at the Whitestone location. The care my 2 children received today when they finally were seen- was Excellent as usual. My children had a 1130am and 12pm appointment so I arrived a few minutes after 11am today Aug 8th. After waiting for 1 hour, the staff never called my children UNTIL I went up to the desk and asked why are other patients going before us again and again. They claim that they don't know why it happened but they see clearly that other patients were put in front of us. I took the day off for my child's cavity filling appointment this morning and when I arrived, was told that she wasn't in the schedule. I had booked the appointment a couple months in advance, so clearly there was a misunderstanding or someone had forgotten to put us in, and it happens they also had a very packed schedule. That's neither here nor there. This could've been a disastrous situation, with me yelling, or vowing to never come back again. However, Audrey at reception was quick to come to the rescue. She vouched for me after learning that I had taken an entire day off of work to come in. She managed to get me in with Dr. Hong, who very kindly squeezed us in between patients even though the schedule was packed full. We were in and out in 5 minutes and everyone was happy. Audrey gave me tickets to mini golf outing that is hosted by the dental practice. But most impressive was that she took a stressful and potentially disastrous situation, and found a solution in a calm and collected way. We need more people like her in the world! read more

I would highly recommend Dental Smiles for Kids to any parent looking for a place to bring their kids for dental treatments. I have been bringing my 3 kids here for years (ages 16,10, and 6). Marvalyn and Sadie always greats us with a friendly smile when we enter. The office is clean and has cute colorful paintings on the walls; very kid friendly. The waiting room is spacious. Wait time is fairly short. However, on busier days the wait could take awhile. (Because it is a pediatric dental office, situations do come up and some patients might require more time during their visit, so it is understandable for delays in appointments.) They have touch screens with games and a movie/show playing to keep the kids distracted as we wait. The hygienist, Val and one other (I'm sorry I forgot her name) are great. They explain everything to the kids so they know what tools will be used and its purpose. My kids have had plenty of treatments, from routine cleanings, cavity fillings to extractions; treatments that any child would be scared of. However, this office has an amazing power duo. Dr. B and his awesome sidekick, Audrey. They are very passionate about their job and always shows a warm and friendly smile when we see them. They have a natural way of making the kids feel at ease. Dr. B and Audrey are THEEEEEE BEST dental team ever! They are so warm and gentle with their patients. Dr. B explains everything before he does it, so that there aren't any surprises. Audrey holds an IPad over the patients, rubs the patients hand, dances and sings with patient, basically she does whatever it takes to soothe the patients and to make the experience enjoyable! The worst staff/front desk. The receptionist/woman who frequently answers the calls literally insulted me to my face and bad-mouthed me to her colleague while I was on the phone with her while i was expressing my frustration respectfully as to why they booked my son if his insurance does not cover their services. I told her I can hear her and she offered no apology nor did she feel embarrassed when I called her out. I never met somebody with a thick face like that and the rudest... I know they could check for insurance eligibility before booking an appt because I work in a med clinic too and my son's new dentist said they should have done it thoroughly. Paying for a bill that was their mistake and getting blame for it despite checking insurance with them prior to booking was bad enough but to be insulted and laughed at while in the middle of asking for help was worst. Then, i decided to just pay for it just to not be stressed out with the back and forth, they gave me a much bigger amount and even insisted that my other child also has a balance. I had to tell them to double check their info because i have the paper bill they sent. They barked out info like they picked it from thin air. Be careful when booking as a new patient. If I could give a "0" star rating I would. My 5 year old son had a terrible experience at this office where he's traumatized and is now terrified of going to the dentist. It first started off where I had asked the dentist, Mrs. Kim, a question and was rudely told by the assistant, Audrey, not to talk to the dentist. Not only was the assistant rude, she was also incompetent as my son ended up choking due to the excess of water collecting in his mouth which should've been suctioned. My son ended up puking the excess water all over himself. As a parent, this was very hurtful to sit through as I was told by the assistant not to talk to the dentist. The final straw was when the front desk woman, Marvlyn, tells me she can not release my child's x-rays and medical record to me (a parent). I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Kourtsounis, or Dr. K as all of his patients refer to him as. What a lovely, lovely office! I have been taking both of my children since they have been babies (they are now 8 and 5). My son (knock wood) has never had to have any procedures done but my 5 year old apparently has more decay in her teeth and had to have three cavities filled yesterday.Dr. K is such an amazing human being. I wish I had the same kind of bedside manner that he has with children! My daughter (who normally freaks out with cleanings) sat quietly and watched TV for 30 minutes while he numbed her with anesthesia (thanks to Dr. K's amazing little method lol) and didn't even feel it and filled three cavities. The office is very inviting and kid-friendly - he really cares about his patients and making their childhood dental experiences very nice and memorable ones. While it is fairly busy office which is alive and well with a lot of children patients in-and-out on a Monday afternoon, it is well-coordinated and managed with great emphasis on covid safety. Calling for an appt. may be a hit-or-miss pending when you call. If you leave a message, you might not get a callback or a follow-up until much later. Nevertheless, Dr. Bertram lives up to the reviews from parents and patients alike. He is understanding of a parent's concern and confidently balances it within the scope of the treatment needs of the pediatric patient. I was able to make an informed decision because he was able and willing to provide much more information about my son's teeth and was patient enough to help explain the impact and needs without sounding condescending or overbearing. Specifically, I was informed by a Pediatric Endodontist from another practice that a pulpotomy was necessary for a baby tooth yet couldn't explain to me how he knew since the x-ray image showed an intact root with no associated pain nor heightened sensitivity to cold. The specialist just responded "I am surprised as well!" Also based on the x-ray of the tooth, that same Endodontist couldn't inform me if the prior dentist had previously performed a filling on the same tooth. Thankfully, the online resource site "www.animated-teeth.com/tooth_decay/" allowed me to understand tooth decay and properly interpret a dental x-ray as well as help me advocate for my child's dental health which had me seeking out an additional evaluation. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Bertram to anyone who may need a dentist for their child, especially if there is a concern of problematic teeth or second opinion in regards to aggressive treatment therapy being pushed by another practice. It should not be an office policy that Nitrous Oxide be a necessity for every pediatric patient undergoing a dental procedure for behavior management, and while pulpotomy (baby root canal) is necessary in some circumstances, Dr. Bertram was able to clearly explain, as well as, differentiate when and why it should be the case to perform the procedure, and if so, is there really no other alternative therapy. read more

I use to go to their Ronkonkoma office which was very nice. Staff was so polite. Waiting room is really spacious, clean and fun for kids. Also wait times were usually no more than 10-15 minutes. I switched to the Whitestone office about a year ago only because of convenience. It takes me 15 min to get to Whitestone and about 1 hour to get to Ronkonkoma. Well what a miserable place this Whitestone office is. The staff especially the front desk is rude and obnoxious. They treat you like garbage. I'm surprised that Dr K. Who is the kindest most amazing pediatric dentist would allow such trash to work in this office. Also the dentists that work in this practice keep changing. I took my kids back for their 6 month check up, Dr. B wasn't there. We saw the hygienist, who was extremely rude. She was judgmental and kept shaking her head when she examined my daughter. Now, 6 months prior to this my daughter had zero cavities. I haven't changed anything in her diet or brushing/flossing. If anything we've been more proactive. The hygienist said she had 5 cavities! No x rays were taken. Next my 20 month old was examined. Six months before he had minor baby bottle mouth, Dr. B said continue brushing, he will be fine. Well this hygienist said his teeth were so bad they needed to be extracted. All of his top teeth. We decided to get a second opinion and the next dentist we saw said 1) Our daughter had only 1 cavity. None showed on the x rays and 2) There is no way my 20 month old's teeth would have to be extracted- they were not that bad at all. We will not be going back there. read more

Not happy! After hearing their "new policy" I need to find myself a new Dentisit. I have 3 children and live on LI but the Dentisit will only make appointments for two of my kids and the third on another date. They may not think so but my time is just as important as theirs and I should be able to bring my three children to the dentist on the same day. The Whitestone location had awful service and it did not feel like a pediatric office. None of the rooms have anything that would make a child feel welcome or happy, no toys or anything to ease their mind. The hygienist that started to clean my daughters teeth was rude. She said I was more upset than other parents. Im not sure why she would say something like that to any parent. I was shocked that she didn't even try make my child feel comfortable before trying to examine her teeth. My daughter arrived calm but the hygienist just started to work on her, not really talking her through anything. I felt she was trying to rush the visit. It was my daughters first visit and she was afraid of the dentist when we left. The staff is also unwelcoming. I waited for the receptionist to stop whispering to a colleague for a few minutes before she acknowledged my presence.
