Alfredo and Emily who tend bar on our regular evenings are more than accommodating to providing a relaxing, fun-filled night of laughs and serious talk. There is also a downstairs area that features different events depending on the day of the week. The ground level atmosphere is rather intimate: soft lighting, music playing at the perfect conversation volume, TV screens galore to provide stimulation, and people all around to engage in friendly small talk. I love this place!! We had a work party here downstairs in the Ratskeller and everything was well organized and super chill. Lol what a laughable excuse for a "German" pub. We waited outside for almost 40 mins because you needed to have a reservation to get in quickly. No where on Yelp does it say or recommend a reservation. As soon as we began to wait, the "security guard" kept letting everyone else in because these drunken idiots kept saying that certain people were part of their group. Mind you he let in almost 30 people before we were seated. We asked him if we had to bribe him to let us in since he was allowing all these other people in while we had to wait. He said "don't worry I'm not letting anyone cut before you" lol. Whatever, we waited and waited until we were finally seated. Once we were seated we waited for 10 mins until I had to ask another security guard for a menu. It wasn't until he flagged down a server and for us that we were attended. There was no German pub feel at all, more like an outdoor club if you ask me. There are no social distancing guidelines and people were crammed everywhere. Also there is only one unisex bathroom at this hellhole, so everyone had to wait a long line to be able to use it. Once we received the menu, the selection was absurd. How can you call yourself a German pub and only have a max of 4 German beers. The waiters/servers have no knowledge of beers, I guess since their clientele are only seeking cheap and generic drinks served anywhere else . We ordered two beers and a pretzel, both which were unremarkable to say the least. Honestly , what a waste of time and money. If you are looking to taste unique and delicious beers DO NOT come here!! Second time here. Pretty empty at 3pm but that is good for us. Emily, the bartender, is lovely. We had good conversation and she took very good care of us. We're in our 50's so hanging out in a bar with good music is few and far between. We had Cosmopolitans and then, after talking about food, Emily breaks out her recipe for Brown Butter Old Fashions. This place was classicly what I expected except they didnt have an oompah band =( I can just imagine doing the chicken dance or hearing Ziggy Zag Ziggy Zag and the crowd thundering back Oi Oi Oi! to the call of the vocalist... I am stoked its in pasadena. my friends had some of their grub and enjoyed it. i just had the beer. Pro Tip: Make sure to check your bill as not all of the beers ring up properly... I was overcharged but they fixed it quickly promptly and with an apology. The bartenders were johnny on the spot and happy to help. This place is a little hidden gem! I don't think it's really noticeable because it's below another bar but that's probably why it's so cool because it wasn't stuffed. In any case we arrived around 10 there were still tables open, the dj was playing awesome 80's music and the beer list goes on for days! The prices were very reasonable. Came here on a Friday night with some friends- initial impressions are: it's very very dark, very loud, and full of hipsters. Not the place for a romantic date night, but definitely the place to hangout with some old high school or college friends. They have a full bar with everything from wine to hard liquor, but their real alcohol menu that shines is their beer. They have tons to choose from AND you can try a traditional German beer recipe (similar to a shandy) of pink grapefruit juice and beer. Food is pretty simple bar fare/German fare. Think lots of sausages and french fries and tator tots. They have two different types of mustards that are delicious! Even a Kale salad if you're feeling healthy. It was pretty easy to find seating for all six of us at 8 pm, so it's not insanely crowded. You can head downstairs to their other bar- which just serves drinks and no food. They had a DJ spinning some light tunes (David Bowie) and the bar tender said they have live music on occasion as well. The creepy murals on the walls are of German fables- which are kinda cool to look at. You can expect your younger- just turned 21-crowd at this bar. Service was great. It was a wonderful experience because not only you get to drink, but you also learn about astronomy and have fun with trivia and quizzes (if you are into that stuff, of course). As for the bar itself, the environment is how I usually like them: dim lights, fair open space to sit and eat/drink and a variety of music playing. The staff was friendly and the price for the beers were about the same price as everywhere except they also offered imported beers (which is good because beers from Belgium are my fave). What impressed me was that the price for the drinks were cheap! I had a blast that day and I would come again either to another Astronomy on tap or to just enjoy some beers (and try their food). read more

I like the place as usual but every time I bring new people they hate the customer service. The bartenders are not friendly and they seem upset the times I've been there. My brother in law got the wrong beer and the girl instead of taking it back and giving him the right order she nodded like, well, nothing I can do and pretty much like, keep it, drink it and shut up, she is not the only one though. They probably don't make enough money there, but their attitude towards patrons doesn't help. I live and go to school in Pasadena so I'm always around checking out local business. I'll be honest it is hard to find businesses in Pasadena with bad customer service especially when it comes to residents. My first visit was OK, but they had issues with service speed/attentiveness. They might still be hiring servers since they just opened. Pros: + Interesting menu. The selection of German beers is very good. They have some German beers here I've never seen on a menu before (or for sale at Bevmo, etc). + The rolls were fresh and not as dry as they looked. + The sausage selection was good, although I would appreciate an explanation for what all the different sausage types are. What is a "Nuremberg," for instance? Cons: - Prices are a little high on the beers and appetizers. Pretzels and cheese are $10, and the pint beers all seem to start at $7, which is around 25-30% higher than their competition in the local area. The liters for ~$14 are a decent deal, but only if you care to drink that much beer in one sitting. - The big squeeze bottles of mustard are already getting greasy, as everyone touches them as they're eating (with tater tot fingers). I can imagine these getting gross pretty quickly. - The main dining hall is insanely loud with a full house. They really need some sound deadening material in here, currently it's just a rectangular brick echo chamber and it's very difficult to even hear the person sitting across from you. - They appeared to be very short staffed for a Friday night. I counted a few bartenders, but only one server (and one manager, I think) working the whole dining hall, so it took around 15 minutes to be able to place our order, and It's hard to tell if you should take a seat and wait for a server to come take your order, or if you're supposed to pester the bartenders to take your order and give you a number to sit down. I will try this place again, I just hope they're able to hire enough servers to satisfactorily manage a full house. read more

my friends and i were drinking at this establishment... my friend (a 90lb girl) had a little too much to drink, and wasn't feeling well, so the manager guy came by and told her she couldn't do that... and then left the table...i asked her if she was okay to walk back to our office, and she said 'no'. she then went to the bathroom and on her return, the manager brought a huge bouncer to kick out this girl who wasn't feeling well after drinking there for a good 2-3 hours... i told them she just wasn't feeling well, and they still insisted that she leave... i told them 'that's not right' especially since 'they' were the ones serving her... the bouncer replied 'she should have known better'. i just feel the lack of concern for a patron is totally unjustified at this establishment and will not return to support a place like this! read more
