I was extremely disappointed with the service on my 89 Chevy Camaro. The Starter they replaced was used one and didn't work very well at all. So I had to replace it with a new starter. They also replaced my gas tank with a used component. I told them that the Idler Arm needed to be replaced, but they neglected to do so. I asked to have the car ready for emissions testing, it failed. In short I'm out 2600 that I paid Hefner's, and wondering just what that money got me. My car is now at another garage in Mesa, and so far I'm out another grand. And it's going to be more before it's finished. Hefner himself seemed like a pretty honest guy. I am however wondering about the mechanic who did the actual work. I don't mind spending money on my cars so long as I am buying results. Sadly I didn't get much for my 2600 at Hefner's. Even sadder still is I'll be paying at least that much again just to have it done right a second time. It's enough to say I won't be using Hefner's EVER again. The only reason I selected one star for the rating is because this sight wouldn't post this review without it. And I doubt my review will stay on this page for very long. read more

Trust. It's something rarely discussed when referring to auto repair. I like to consider myself a "man's man", but my knowledge of cars and what makes them go vroom is limited at best. For this reason, every one needs to have a mechanic they can trust to "do the right thing". I've been burnt more times than I care to admit, sometimes lied straight to my face - this can turn a man against an entire industry. A good friend recommended this place, and even though it's out of the way, and it's a little run down, it's refreshing to know you can bring a problem to them and get the truth. In a world where less-informed folks get taken advantage of by shady auto repair shops, Hefner's is a safe place. I know they're only going to recommend services that are actually needed and perform them for a fair price. It was a huge relief when they honored the warranty (11 months after the original service) for a complete A/C system replacement on my wife's car. There was no hassle or argument from them or even an attempt to accuse her of being negligent. They looked at the problem and then fixed it with no additional money out of our pocket. On one occasion the horn on the car went haywire and was randomly honking at other cars. (Just like in the Brian Reagan routine. Very embarrassing.) After checking it out, Hefner's removed the penny that our toddler had forced into the steering wheel, thereby fixing the problem. And they didn't even charge us a shop fee or anything. My 2003 Matrix started protesting LOUDLY on startup 2 days ago. I suspected the starter motor was going out, but I'm honestly more of an armchair mechanic than actual grease monkey. I drive by Hefner's every day on the way to work, and know they've been there forever, and the 2 existing Yelp reviews were positive, so I stopped in. Gary (the owner), cheerfully and quickly wrote my repair order and patiently entertained my armchair assessment of my car's condition. I got a call a couple hours later confirming the diagnosis. I authorized the work and within 2 hours or so, I got a call that my car was ready. I picked up that evening after work and the total was $11.00 less than the estimate. The new starter QUIETLY and efficiently fired up the Matrix and I was on my way. Great experience, highly recommend these guys! read more

When we moved back to AZ 2 years ago I was SO happy that Hefner's would once again be my mechanic. My family has been going to them for over 30 years now and we refer them to everyone! I just picked up my car today and thought how lucky I am that I can get my car repaired (never fun) and walk away with a smile. I needed an expensive repair and Hefner's called around to find the best deal for me. I am always happily surprised when I go to pay my bill because it is always around what they quoted me and oftentimes under. I have been taking my vehicle to Hefner's for several years now and I can recommend them to anybody else who cringes at the thought of being taken advantage of for auto repairs. They are thorough in their diagnostics and they call you during repairs anytime something changes in their original diagnosis or estimated costs. Another great thing that they do is to give you options on whether you make all the recommended repairs now or save some for later...because sometimes it's nice to swallow an elephant a little bit at a time.
