We went here after recommendations from a local living in Clifton. He had said that the place has wonderful sunset views on the deck, but it was too hot to sit out there when we went. However, the inside was gorgeous with tall windows and nice decor. You walk into the Maverick hotel and go the 4th floor to get there. 3 out of the 4 of us in our group ordered the Shakshuka, which was flavorful and delicious to soak the sourdough into. I recommend over easy or over medium for your eggs on this. Served with feta and sliced avocado on top. We also got the avocado toast with smoked salmon and were pleasantly surprised to see that it came with entire filet of salmon for only an extra $6. We were expecting a few slices of salmon, but this was great! The fresh toast was ordered for the table. I found it to be a 7/10. Loved the peach inside, but was underwhelmed overall. If you're a group of 4 maybe consider getting the fresh press coffee, which our server recommended we do. Perfect serving size for us, but if your group drinks a lot of coffee just get the drip. My wife and I were really excited to check out Devil's Kitchen during our time in Grand Junction. It sits up on the rooftop of the Hotel Maverick. We decided to drop in without a reservation. The host was honestly pretty weird about it. He told us he had to go ask his waiters if they would even agree to take us. Truth be told, that is a bizarre way to welcome paying guests. They ultimately found a spot for us. Then they abandoned us for a solid fifteen minutes before anyone even approached the table. We finally ordered our drinks and watched another twenty minutes tick away. I went with the CMU Centennial Manhattan. It is built with a Colorado bourbon, sweet vermouth, local hot honey, bitters, and a bordeaux cherry. A proper Manhattan needs a careful balance between the whiskey and the sweet vermouth to round out the bite. Honestly, they were just way too heavy-handed with that hot honey. It was so aggressively spicy that it just wasn't enjoyable. My wife ordered the Lavender Lemon Drop. Hers was actually perfectly balanced with a really nice citrus kick. We put in an order for the Deviled Kitchen Eggs. Another twenty minutes passed before they hit the table. They make them with a tempura fried egg white and an herb yolk. I appreciate the attempt at a crispy texture. They were decent but ultimately nothing special. My wife ordered the Bison Tip Pappardelle. I decided on the Roasted Dirty Hippie Half Chicken. They use a local Palisade beer marinade for the chicken. I ordered it with duck fat potato dippers and truffle yucca on the side. Another thirty minutes crawled by before the main courses arrived. Both dishes were just huge letdowns. The pappardelle noodles were completely stuck together in a starchy clump. The wild mushroom cream sauce was overly sweet and cloying instead of savory. The bison meat was tough and tasted exactly like plain boiled beef. There was absolutely nothing enjoyable about that pasta dish. My chicken wasn't any better. It had a terribly rubbery texture. It felt like it was roasted three days ago and lazily reheated. The skin was soggy and gross instead of crisp and properly rendered. The duck fat dippers were completely missing that deep, savory richness you expect when cooking with animal fats. The truffle yucca was actually pretty tasty. A good side dish just can't make up for a terrible main course, though. We didn't bother asking for a second round of drinks. The food was so poor that we skipped dessert and just asked for the check. The panoramic view of the Colorado National Monument from the rooftop is fantastic. A beautiful sunset just isn't enough to excuse a bad dinner, though. We expected a much higher-end culinary experience. What we got felt like a bunch of college students running a very disorganized experiment. I would definitely skip this spot. read more

Very disappointed in this restaurant as it looked so promising. The Deviled Eggs were good but the radish on top needs to be in strips or smaller pieces. It lodged in my throat as I swallowed. My husband liked the Ahi Tostada. The Burger was ordered medium rare and served well done. Alyx offered to have it remade but we didn't have time. It was also much smaller than the bun and dry. The fries were excellent. They are Brabant style (twice fried) and were beautiful and nicely seasoned. If only all of the food was that good. Prices are high for the quality of food. This charming restaurant sits on top of a hotel and offers absolutely beautiful views -- the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch. We started with cocktails: my girlfriend had a prosecco with a hint of lavender (so refreshing!), and I had the Wild West Prickly Pear Spritz -- light, flavorful, and delicious. Appetizer and two lunches, no drinks, we had water. The service was great, we were seated quickly and everyone was kind and friendly. Our appetizer and food was timely and delicious! 7 of us Stopped in last week for a celebratory dinner of a friends upcoming wedding. We asked to be seated in the roof outside but when we got there we were inside. We ordered cocktails that were all super tasty (try the lavender lemon drop with gin). After ordering drinks it seemed to take a long time to order food. I tried the filet mignon medium rare with potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The meat was okay. The potatoes needed gravy or a sauce. Hated the Brussel sprouts and should have gotten the asparagus. To say the meal was just okay after spending $65 for it... that's not great. After dinner we ordered dessert- the brownie with ice cream and the bananas foster. We got the brownie very quickly but it took ages for the bananas foster. We ended up being there way longer than intended. The staff were nice and friendly but the food for me was lacking. read more

We love the idea of students learning hospitality by operating a restaurant. The place is chic, with huge windows, a lovely view of campus, and stylish decor. The house salad was very good, as were the mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. Several items we ordered did not work out well. The short ribs were not short ribs at all, but stringy pot roast. The hamburger was alarmingly red in the middle. And the $16 zucchini cake was so stiff and dry---inedible, actually-- that it should never made it out of the kitchen. Surely the kitchen staff knew what they were sending out. Why not tell the truth about the beef dish? And if the dessert menu was in disorder, as the wait-staff hinted at, why not simply apologize and offer ice cream, which is always tasty? We left feeling tricked and ripped off. read more

Very disappointing!! The restaurant itself is beautiful and very spacious! There is also an outside dining patio with a fabulous view!! The service combined with the poorly executed food was terrible and completely unexpected!! When we initially arrived we were immediately seated (outside - per our request) and our server appeared just as we were taking our seats to bring us waters. What a great start!! right!? Sadly it went downhill from there. It was maybe 15 minutes before she came back to take our drink and appetizer order . Additionally it seemed as if all of our initial choices (cocktail wise) were unavailable We finally settled on a bottle of wine and the Colorado wild sausage chefs board. Both were great!! The sun was beginning to set so we quickly ordered our entrees (30 mins later) the first chance we got to get our servers attention . The patio grew dark and no one bothered to turn on the lights for us so when our food arrived, I had to use the light on my cell phone to see it. It was so over salted that neither of us could enjoy it. The veggies were also overcook (burnt) and it was dissatisfying. Last ditch effort was worth it!! We had an amazing lunch at Devil's Kitchen! We sat outside with a beautiful view. Our server, (I believe his name was Ryland) gave us a great recommendation for the green chile queso that was so yummy (we ate it before I thought to take a photo). My husband ordered the burger with duck fat potatoes and I got the taco special of the day which was a Cajun salmon with chimichurri sauce on corn tortillas. My tacos were fantastic and very flavorful! My husband is picky about his burgers and really loved it. Absolutely delicious. Located on the Colorado Mesa University campus, this place is worth experiencing. We enjoyed their great happy hour food and beer ($6 for various food and drink items from 3-5pm. I came here on Sunday evening and had a really disappointing experience. We made a reservation ahead of time for the outside patio, and were super excited for dinner. Service was extremely poor. We were seated and it took 15 minutes before someone brought water. It seemed like other tables were having issues with service too. One of the tables around us had their items cleared before they were finished, and another table had dietary restrictions and the server wasn't knowledgeable about what was on the menu. They were out of the cocktail I wanted so I ordered a substitute and the server was kind enough to comp the cocktail. We split a burger with fries and broccolini. It was good, but the menu said the fries would be truffle yucca fries and they were clearly just regular potato. I was expecting a fine dining experience and was really disappointed with our dinner. I do feel that they have good cleanliness standards. The duck was nice enough. Really it was the "chocolate cake" that disappointed. I am guessing the rounds of "cake" were about four inches around. They were more like a flattened biscuit than cake and dry. The "frosting" was sweet enough, but the combination did not tie together. It lacked the richness and complex flavors I was hoping for. Great rooftop restaurant, but that's about it. Located in the Hotel Maverick on the Mesa State University, the restaurant is staffed by culinary students working towards their hospitality degrees. The menu is small and meals are pricey. Ordered lamb chops and my partner the short rib. Our waitress, Carson, who was great, informed us after ordering, that one of our sides, asparagus, was not longer available which left us to choose between rice or a side salad. Since our meals already had mashed potatoes, we opted for the small side salad. Before we could even put a fork into the salad, our main course was dropped in front of us. My lamb chops were bland and somewhat fatty and the short rib was charred and overcooked. The mashed potatoes were also bland and boring. Considering the prices, the lamb at $46 and short rib at $48, it was a very disappointing dinner experience. For an expensive restaurant, the quality and unavailable sides should be reviewed and better managed. Needless to say, I was forewarned by a previous guest that this restaurant was lacking and very hit and miss on the menu. So, for the price and food, I don't think I will be making a second appearance anytime soon. read more

We first went for happy hour, sitting on the fabulous patio with nice town views and loved the food so much we went back for dinner the next night. For happy hour we had the gluten free cornbread which was excellent and went well with the spicy pork and green chile soup and the deviled eggs. Everything was garnished impeccably - watermelon radishes, an orchid (yes they are edible - do try it, very mild) and micro greens on the eggs. Radish and a crackling on the stew. For dinner the next night we had the house made sourdough; the avocado, grapefruit, radish salad ( excellent) and the huge bison tamale which was a deconstructed tamale with thick masa cakes top and bottom, loads of roasted green chile and also mushrooms - this is very spicy. My wife and I got salmonella poisoning here on may 1st. We ordered the fried deviled eggs appetizer (the only item we shared, so we know it was that), but I guess even the light fry didn't kill all the salmonella, because 5 hours later we were barfing and crapping for the next 24-36 hours... not fun at all. Stay away from the deviled eggs! I had also ordered the 16oz bison to be cooked medium... but it came out rare, and at least 1/3 of the steak was fat. I wouldn't recommend the bison either. We drove FAR off the highway to come here based on what was falsely advertised only to be told the kitchen was closed randomly in the middle of a Sunday at 2:25 PM. All they had was crap chips and unhealthy "happy hour" items akin to a school cafeteria. Also ... I'm sure they really close at 2:30, but don't have any concern for policy or customer service.
