Just got my tattoo done by Christian. I couldn't be happier. I had a good vibe just from the name and reviews (+1 point) of this place and when I called the shop owner (Shane) this morning he was very nice on the phone and answered my questions completely without sounding bothered by them (+2 points). This BUGS me about other tattoo shops, how they can be so brash and annoyed with you when you have questions. This was NOT the case here. He then told me that he was off today but Christian was there now and told me to stop by because he can do lettering really well. (+100 points). Went by and talked with Christian (very nice guy!!!) He had GREAT input and really helped me finalize what I wanted. I felt really good about the final drawing and was confident he would make it look amazing. An hour later, my tattoo was done. HO-LY SH**. I F***ing LOVE IT! Seriously. My favorite tattoo of all. Ugh. I cannot stop looking at it. I have always said if I ever get a tattoo it had to be something with deep meaning and by someone I could trust. My daughter and I decided to get one together and went on a search for someone special. Like so many others we walked by the shop and thought we should look in here. Richie was AMAZING!!!! I never had a bigger piece done and was a little nervous! But I showed him a few pictures of what I wanted (peonies) and he put together a design that I was extremely happy with. He did the shading by free hand-very talented. Came out truly awesome and I am very very happy with it. He even touched up my foot (smaller tat) and filled it in as it needed some touching up badly! I rate this a 2 star as the tattoo Shane did was pretty great but everything else about the entire experience would be a big fat zero! My partner & I wanted to get tattoos on our vacation and after a fair bit of research we decided on Devoceantattoo. Having booked weeks in advance we mooched around Venice Beach for the morning in anticipation of our 1pm appointment. When we arrived the store was locked up so we waited around a while and tried the phone number with no luck. What we did discover is that Chris who we had booked with had gone to Europe on vacation. Shane then got back to us (lying saying Chris was ill) but that he could fit one of us in at 3pm. Now the tattoo itself is great, low pain for the foot and really clean lines so we booked my partner in to get his at 9pm the following day. As it was our last day in LA this tied us down to driving a 2 hour round trip again but not wanting to go home without the much anticipated tattoo we thought it was worth it. Half way across town we get at text at 19:30 saying couldn't do the appointment. No explanation, no sorry. By this point of 2 trips, being lied to and being totally messed around my partner was livid. Calling Shane he was told an earlier tattoo was taking much longer so he had to cancel. Surely if you book an appointment you honour it ???? So, one tattoo, 3+ hours of driving, lies and a complete lack of professionalism/care. One experience that was very close to spoiling our dream vacation, poor!!!!!! read more

We had a great experience at Devotion with Rich as our tattoo specialist. He was honest, very patience with our picky requests and extremely professional. He did not pressure us to make any quick or spur of the moment decisions and even stayed later to accommodate our requests and create the tattoo we wanted. I am 47 years old. Never had a tattoo, not ever sure that I wanted one but that if I did, it had to be impulsive and feel like the right moment. I was here on a business trip, had a couple of hours to kill between meetings so ended up in Venice. I wandered by Devocean and something drew me in. Went in, spoke to Rick and his positive energy and easy-going California charm won me over instantly. We designed something together and next thing I know, I have a beautifiul tattoo with the initials of my husband and two daughters. I love it so much. I went to Devocean to get my first tattoo, Cristian was recommended to me as a great tattoo artist. The atmosphere in the shop itself is great, very well kept and clean, and the art decorating the walls showcases the artist's work, which was awesome. Cristian made me feel incredibly comfortable. He was such a great guy and a pleasure to be around, and to top it all off his tattoo work is absolutely beautiful. When he finished my tattoo I couldn't believe how much I loved it; the line work, the shading, the crisp lettering, everything was on point and blew my expectations out of the water. I'm in love with my tattoo, and I can't stop looking at it. I recommend not only Devocean, but Cristian as a tattoo artist to everyone. My wife and I have been looking to get our first tattoos, leaving in LA we have a lot of places but not all are good. We did good amount of research and decided to check out DevOcean Tattoo in Venice since we just moved to this area. As we walked in Cris was amazing from the first minute. We showed him our designs, he said he can take care of us right now, he gave us amazing price for 2 tattoos, and explained to us exactly how it will be for someone who were getting their first tattoos. 3 hours later I had an amazing tattoo on my should and 2 hours after that my wife had her amazing tattoo. Cris turned our designs from printed paper to masterpieces. We will for sure be coming back to get more tattoos from Cris and DevOcean. read more

Wanted to get a small tattoo in Venice Beach on new years and everyone was closed down for the day and night, came to Devocean and Rick was the only one working and had about 6 people waiting for tattoos, he took me and my girlfriend in at about 1030 or 11 pm and was fantastic. He's super friendly, the place is a little tiny but you really can't beat his willingness to help a customer out. Props to this place for staying open when all the others were closed!! read more

Scheduled an appointment March 20th, Friday. Let me give you a real personal review of this artist, Shane, since he's the man. First off, there are plenty of tattoo parlors in the area, no doubt yelp will show you all the 4-5 star shops and hundreds of reviews. But, let me tell you why I chose Shane and why his first impressions got me. I did my research and don't even live near the area of his shop. I'm in 29 palms, it's close to a 4 hour drive and I only saw his artwork and communicated with him through email (communication was great by the way.) Trust me there are plenty of shops closer than 4 hours of driving. Only talked to him on the phone once to give him a heads up that I was driving to his shop. Shane is the owner, clerk, secretary, and the artist. It doesn't get any personal then that. You choose any other location, you might be approached by a store rep and by multiple artists working in the shop. Not only did I favored his artwork over others due to the detail of his drawings and how complex they were, I knew he was going to take his tattoo very personal because he is the only one that works there majority of the time, if not the main guy. If he does not take care of his customers himself, who is going to come to his business. This was my first tattoo and a pretty sizeable one at that for my first. A little word of advice, make sure you have a general idea of what you want and see how the progress of the artwork is going so that you don't waste the artist's time after he's done drawing and start making changes after. I'm glad Shane understood and knew what I was trying to get and pretty much got the ball on the money when he showed me his final result. He's easy to talk to and work with which is a obviously is a must when you're having someone ink something permanently on you. You can tell he cares more about his artwork than the money, and he's not rushing to finish so he can move onto the next customer and move on. Don't let his small shop fool you either. It's filled with original artwork, and the small store shows you that its just him, you, and his masterpiece about to go on your body. Once I get another idea for my 2nd tattoo, Shane will be THE only dude I come to. Since I ended work late and got inked by him, probably starting at 9 pm. You would think he would try to rush since we started pretty late and it was a big tattoo, but nah just the opposite. He took plenty of time drawing up my idea, explaining to me how it's going to come out, and even used books and references to make the tattoo more realistic and detailed which is what I ultimately wanted. We split it up into 2 sessions. I am set to get my second session on March 31st. I'll UPDATE this review once I get my final result, which I have no doubt in my mind my experience and tattoo will not be any less than what he proved to me the first time. Overall, I could care less if you think I'm bullshitting or not. You don't have to believe me, go in for yourself and check out the dude. I will never go to any other tattoo ARTIST, again. The emphasis on the word Artist is because this is exactly what you get when you walk in to this one table one chair parlor. The first thing you will/should notice is there are no hanging tablets of page after page of flash tattoos. What you will find is walls full of original paintings, sketchings, moldings, carvings and photos. Shane is clearly and artist first, and that is exactly what you want from a person who is going to stick something on you for life. Shane did the fox tattoo on my forearm in remembrance of my Grandmother who passed away. I seriously could not have been happier with the way it turned out. The amount of care and detail he put into this tattoo is why I will always come back. Shane does have a light hand which is good for those long sessions, and he uses a rotary gun, which cuts down on that annoying buzz sound. I have not had the opportunity to meet Christian but my roommates have gotten tattooed by him and are equally as impressed by him as I am with Shane. Everyone in my house and even some of their family members have been tattooed by these guys and all are thrilled with the outcome. I have already sent over my next piece to shane and can't wait to get in for a session. This is not the walk in and sit in one of the 8 empty chairs and wait to get poked by a stranger kind of place. After looking around at various shops and artists I just happened to stumble across this shop. I had the chance to see Chris doing work on a customer. After reviewing shop portfolios and looking over the shop for general cleanliness. I chose to have some work done. I was very happy with the price and work done. Chris even did post healing touch up work for no extra cost. I've gone to bigger and fancier shops in the past and paid more only to find out that a lot of the artists were an apprentice being allowed to say they were a regular artist. I don't mind them working on me but I expect to pay accordingly and would not have them doing a highly detailed piece. So if your looking for quality work, fair pricing and someone that can make your idea a reality, go check out these guys. read more

Rich did my Septum piercing for $40 including jewelry, which was so cheap it initially made me nervous. (I tipped $20 more, for a total of $60, because I don't fuck around when it comes to body mod tips.) I googled "piercing shops near me" and this popped up and had good reviews, so I went, after another shop cancelled my scheduled appointment again (by canceled, I mean I showed up, and they told me the piercer wasn't in..... ) I called Rich, he took a walk in, helped me pick the right jewelry for my face, and it was clean and quick. He made me pretty nervous, though-asking about pain tolerance, because he said it was a "long" pierce and "painful." It was neither longer or more painful than other piercings I've gotten, and I don't think I'm particularly tough. He massages your cartilage briefly, clamps it, and pierces it cleanly and quickly. The clamp is uncomfortable but the piercing itself hurt less than a fucking flu shot I got a few weeks ago and the whole thing, including putting the jewelry in, couldn't have taken 30 seconds. And he even made me feel better about how much my eyes ran, which is normal for nose stuff but still made me feel like a wimp. Rich, if you're reading this, thanks for scaring me, you jerk! :P But seriously, thanks for the perfect pierce. Rich also took a picture for his portfolio because of he was so pleased that it was perfectly straight, which as I understand comes down equally on my anatomy and his skill, but I can't say for certain-so if you visit him, you might see my nose :) TL;DR Quick, clean, cute shop, excellent price, way less painful than expected. read more

I gave Shane a deposit over 3 months ago to start sketches on art for a new piece. After multiple attempts to see any art he had done, Shane has been non-communicative and non-responsive. The one time he made an appointment for me to see something (after repeatedly asking to see some progress), he canceled the appointment and never made any effort to reschedule. After months of waiting, I decided to go elsewhere. Now Shane is refusing to give my deposit back, even though nothing at all was done in exchange for the money I paid him. He's now become completely non-responsive since I've asked for the deposit back. Having said that I had a tattoo here before, where I provided the artwork, and it turned out pretty good, though the positioning of it was a bit skewed. If you're looking for original artwork from the artists here, or looking for a place with integrity or good communication, I would steer away from this shop for sure. read more

Went in today after talking with Shane on the phone. Pete, the artist during the day was incredibly nice and super easy to talk to. Had a great experience and he also made my tattoo look absolutely amazing. Time went by faster than expected and he made the pain as bearable as possible. Definitely would recommend him + this place was cheaper than other tattoo shops my friends and I have been to. 10/10 experience and 10/10 guy. I would give DevOcean 100 stars if I could! Shane is such a kind and amazing artist! I came in with a pretty good idea of what I wanted but there were some details I was still trying to decide on. Shane was very patient and gave some great suggestions and I made an appointment for the next day! He took his time, making sure everything was perfect and even added some details that he said would look good (and it does!). I live in Hollywood but decided to spent my birthday at a friend's condo in Marina Del Rey, and wanted to get a tattoo closeby. After doing some research I called Devocean for an appointment and he was very helpful, setting me up with an appointment that night and asking for pictures emailed of what I want (a very specific vintage gun) to prepare. I spent a summer working at a mediocre tattoo shop in Hollywood, so I'm familiar with what to look for and know how some tattoo artists tend to give attitude. Not at devocean. By the time I arrived (you're going to be street parking in Venice so leave early) he had my design drawn out beautifully and steered me towards the best placement. What I really appreciate is how the tattoo artist took his time. It wasn't a big tattoo, but it was a very detailed one, and he spent a solid our making sure every line was perfect. The place is tiny but clean and comfortable. You can tell it's a passionate small business and I really value that. Also, I noticed they had a female apprentice, which is rad. It's great to see such a well-run and flourishing little shop. I'd come back and would suggest this place to anyone. The prices are fair but not inexpensive. Mine ran $140 (plus tip of course) which was a little more than I hoped to spend, but I got more than I had hoped for too. I'm very happy. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting Venice Beach for two days with the intention of getting tattooed while on our vacation. I had pulled up Yelp on my phone and had seen the reviews for DevOcean Tattoo. I knew we had to check this shop out. After walking up and down the boardwalk and seeing some of the other shops, I was unimpressed. We ended up walking into DevOcean and chatting with Christian. I told him exactly what I wanted and he said no problem. He gave me a website to check out some fonts. We came in the next day and chatted with Christian some more, as my boyfriend wanted an elaborate tattoo that would take several hours. Christian told us to come back into the shop later that day. We came back in, and he was able to finish my tattoo in 10 minutes. He's very light-handed and was quick about it too. It turned out awesome. Then he drew up my boyfriend's tattoo and it took about 3 hours to complete. It looks amazing! Anyways, the quality of work done by the artists at this tattoo shop is brilliant and superior to the other artists located in the area. If you're looking for a cheap tattoo, get one down on the boardwalk because at DevOcean Tattoo, you get what you pay for. The shop was extremely clean, the artists were all really friendly. If I'm ever back in Venice/L.A., I fully intend to stop into the shop again and get another tat. read more

Amazing place and a truly wonderful find! While visiting Venice, my fiance & I decided to commemorate the trip with some tattoos. After a few days of research & getting pretty much the same quotes from every place we went into, we settled on DevOcean after chatting with Shane. Not only was his shop one of the cleanest in the area, his super kind and genuine demeanor was exactly what we were looking for. We came in with rough images of what we wanted and this amazingly talented man had turned our vision into something better than we could imagine in the 15 minutes it took us to head to the bank and return. Shane was so incredibly patient & kind as we changed the placement of the outline several times until they were just right... all the while offering wonderful input and feedback to ensure we would be entirely satisfied. Having had a few tattoos before, this was without a doubt the most painless process in every possible sense. Shane has a gentle yet incredibly precise touch and you can tell how much he loves what he does. He is meticulous with his art and dedicated more time than any tattoo artist has for me in the past. In my experience at least, most artists are in a hurry to finish you up so they can move on to more customers (which I understand as they need to make a living), but it was a nice change to not feel like "just another tourist". Furthermore, he uses a new pen-style tattoo gun that I have never seen before and I am truly grateful to whoever invented this gift from the heavens. Never before has getting a tattoo been so relaxing! I could've fallen asleep! This was especially good for my fiance who has never been tattooed and isn't the biggest fan of needles. He was shocked at how breezy it was--and I was admittedly resentful that he would never know the pain of the heavy old-style guns. :-P By the end, we both walked out with gorgeous works of art that we are so proud to display. Shane is a amazingly talented artist and I can promise that you will not be disappointed by his work. I am so impressed by DevOcean that I have already decided to return in the winter and next summer to finally finish the half-sleeve I have been putting off for 8 years now. My husband and I visited LA last week and did a lot of research about this particular tattoo parlor before deciding on them. We called the day before and Christian was very nice and accommodating when we told him there would be about a 3 hour time frame during the next day when we would be able to come in. When we arrived, we met Christian (super talented, his artwork is on all the walls in the shop) and Cayse (silent 'e' lol, also an amazing artist). Christian was already working on someone at the time, and Cayse was really nice and receptive and put up with my 5,000 questions I had during his process. He really made me super comfortable and explained everything to me. My husband and I both ended up getting tattoos that night and we couldn't be happier with them, or with the service. Cayse deserves an A+ for his awesome service and work. He's amazing. Another plus, they use disposable needles, so nothing is ever reused (big plus in my book). Thanks guys! read more

Needed to replace body jewelry, so the owner sold me a gold plated stud for my monroe. He claimed to know nothing about his jewelry, nothing about the metal under the plating, but said it was fine, the plating was excellent and he's never had complaints. Within three days the plating literally rotted off and I woke up with a terrible infection, my lip was swollen and in awful pain. I confronted the owner over the phone, wanting a refund. Now he claims he knows all about his jewelry, refuses to give me my refund, refuses to even give me his name, and claims I am irrational and throws me in circles of useless conversation for about 20 minutes. He said "I will give you a refund, just tell me what you want to know about the jewelry." I said, "Thank you very much, I will come in today for the refund." And he says "SEE, YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING! YOU JUST WANT A REFUND!" He then tells me he will call me on when to come in, promises me a refund, I kept asking for his name, he HUNG UP ON ME, and then never calls me back. I show up at his shop on October 26th at 8:45PM (the same day I called him) to get my refund and the doors are closed, yet it said online he closed at 10PM that night. I get a TEXT MESSAGE the next day saying I will not be receiving a refund. I have affirmation from another shop that the jewelry was completely crap along with a doctor ready to testify. I am currently reporting him to the BBB, and for the record, I can't even find the business on the Secretary of State Business Search, so I am wondering at this point if this is a legitimate business. I plan to take this business, if it IS a business, to court. read more
