This is the first time that customer service has compelled me to write a yelp review, but here I am. I sometimes order from D&B for office meetings, and the level of care, attention, and service I get here is unmatched. Steve, the manager, has always been gracious and accommodating and has helped me out of some last minute catering jams. As someone whose job is a lot of food ordering, I'm glad to have found a place that puts my business at such a high priority. I'm impressed every time. Oh wait, there's also the food. It's amazing, and worth the price. The ingredients are fresh, of good quality, and they're stuffed into the sandwiches. It's the sort of place where you'll never have a usual because it's all so good. I will say, though, that I hope their new Chicken Salad Crunch sandwich never goes away. This is a fantastic place to stop in and get a sandwich, salad or soup. I stopped in on a whim, and ended up getting a Cuban. While it wasn't traditional, it was pretty darn tasty and huge. I think I spent about $9 after tax, but could only make it through half the sandwich. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and a list of soups that seems to never end. It was also interesting that they offered a number of chilled soup options (four the day I was there), which is a nice touch during the summer. There is some seating, but it's pretty limited. Love the abundant lunch options. Salads, soups, sandwiches, paninis, and plenty of pastries and desserts. Also love how we can grab prepackaged salad bowls ourselves and hand them over for preparation and additional ingredients. No charge for soy milk in coffee -- super plus for me. There's no wifi though, and I wonder if the vast sitting space is of any use. There are breakfast wraps too that will fill you up. And muffins, scones, and bagels of course. Love the cream cheeses -- cinnamon raisin, salmon, etc. They always look so yummy behind the window in bowls not plastic tubs. Devon & Blakely is a new addition that should be welcomed to Foggy Bottom's scanty cafe options (yes, even I am sick of frequenting the H Street Starbucks year after year). read more

I appreciate that they're fast but they also give me anxiety when I'm trying to decide what to order and they're continually screaming at me "next!! Next! Whose next?!" I literally avoid this place sometimes because of that. The food is good (soup is meh) but it's too expensive and their salads are outrageously overpriced, EACH item is anywhere from fifty cents to 2 dollars. I go to this place for soup. That's all I am after. They have great selection of soups and I love how they label meat vs seafood vs vegetable only. I also love how I could add condiments like cheese and cilantro to my soups. Most of vegetarian soups tasted good. I think price for soup is reasonable. What's not reasonable in terms of price is everything else. Cut fruits, breakfast yogurt, salad and sandwiches. I've tried their a la carte salad and got charged more, so unless I can calculate how much my salad is supposed to cost in my head quick enough, I wouldn't go back there for salad. Besides, there's Sweet Green right around the corner. I just don't find it justifying. read more

Devon & Blakely has a good selection of speciality sandwiches, wraps, soups, and a salad bar. The sandwiches are made in the morning (I see them do so on my walk from the metro to my office) and displayed behind a glass case. It kind of reminds me of the cafes I went to when I was in Venice, Italy. You basically go right up to the case and tell someone what sandwich or wrap you want. I just found out today that you also have the option to get a half wrap or mix n match half wraps. This is great if you want to try different ones. I've tried the pressed cuban and blackened chicken gyro. Both were very good. Sandwiches average between $6 and $7. The portions are huge. You could easily eat half and save the rest for lunch the next day. For the salad bar, they have small and large to-go containers on a shelf already filled with lettuce. You can choose between romain, spinach, or mixed greens. You take the bowl up to a different glass case which contains all the available toppings. This part of the process can take a while if you don't know which toppings you want. I would suggest picking up one of their menus, which has the list of toppings, and selecting them beforehand. The price for each topping varies between .50 and 2.00. My favorite dressing is the Roasted Garlic & Red Wine. My only complaint about their salad is that they put way too many toppings. It feels like you are eating a bunch of diced veggies with a side of lettuce. They have a wide variety of soups to choose from. There is a board on the wall that lists the soups and whether they contain meat or are vegetarian. I had the Roasted Tomato & Garlic soup once and it was pretty good. The soup comes with a piece of bread. Soups average between $4 and $6. Overall, this D&B is a good lunch time option if you are in the Foggy Bottom area. I'll be back for the sandwiches and soups. read more

My workplace always orders from Devon & Blakely during our meetings and it is delicious. While I was walking down 23rd street, I happened upon this establishment and decided to try it firsthand. This was around lunchtime and it was packed! The outside tables were all filled and the line was pretty long. The ordering is a little disorganized with multiple people placing orders simultaneously. I ended up ordered a mozzarella prosciutto panini, a D&B hot chocolate, and a mango pie slice. I wasn't told when my panini was ready and had to go up to the counter and look at the sandwiches placed there to find mine. This could be a little more organized so you know when your food is ready. The food was absolutely amazing. I savored every bite of the panini because the cheese was melted to perfection and the prosciutto was tender and juicy! I may not be able to buy another sandwich at this place for fear of being disappointed. The food gets 5 stars for sure. When I was at the register, my cards kept getting declined and I was stuck there for an extra 5 minutes. The manager came and then swiped a card that the previous lady had already swiped and it worked. This was an inconvenience because I had to wait at the register since the lady wasn't fully swiping my card. Hopefully this doesn't happen next time. If there soup is ANY indication as to how the rest of their food taste I bet its delicious!! My boss asked me if I wanted so chicken soup from around the corner as I have not been feeling the best. I told him that would be AWESOME! I was thinking "meh chicken soup, whatevs its free food and I forgot my lunch." So when he came back to the office my mouth started watering because the food smelled SO GOOD. When he sat that little yellow cup down on my desk I knew it was about to be so good. When I tell y'all that chicken soup touched my SOUL it was so good. So hot and flavorful on this cold winter day. I was so grateful. And when I tell you its full of buttery goodness, with carrots, celery, chicken, potatoes and peas it just totally hit the spot! Man I can't wait to try some of the rest of their food! I was going to give this two stars but took away one of those when I couldn't find any customer contact info: not a real website, no email, no social media, nothing. I ordered a sandwich online for pick-up and had my fiance bring it back to me at our hotel. I got the chicken and mozzarella "specialty sandwich," which comes with roasted tomato bruschetta and fresh basil on ciabatta. I open the thing when I get it and see the chicken isn't a regular chicken breast, it's breaded, which was said NOWHERE on the menu. It was also BAD breaded chicken. My "fresh basil" was like, half a piece of a basil leaf, and it's doubtful that the bread was ciabatta (we think it was sourdough). NOT happy that I paid $10 for this crappy sandwich and don't have any way to let them know that it was bad. read more

Working in the same building as Devon and Blakely, I frequent this location due to the sheer convenience. However, I am oftentimes pleased with my lunch at Devon and Blakely. Firstly, the Chicken they use in most of their items is quite good, thick and hearty with a seasoning that is perfect for wraps and sandwiches. Being partial to a wrap for lunch, I particularly enjoy the Cobb Wrap. The balsamic vinaigrette accents the chicken and avocado beautifully. Also, their Chicken Salad sandwich is a great take on a delicious classic. Secondly, and more negatively, is the pricing. For me, the pricing is a a bit incongruous with the size and quality of the food. After tax, most items are a minimum of $9, which is commonplace pricing for lunch in the area but I still believe the pricing could be a speck more reasonable. Lastly, the online ordering and pickup process is ideal for a busy worker bee such as myself. Order online, walk up to the right side of the food window, call out your name, and your food is in your hands momentarily. Overall, this a solid lunch spot for the quintessential DC worker but slightly overprice for my liking. read more

This place was the most organized chaos I have ever witnessed. I was initially very overwhelmed when I walked in. I felt like I was the grand central station for soups and sandwiches. I took a good look at all of the products and everything looked delicious, fresh and of good quality. I came with a clear intention to get some soup and I was not let down. The selection is huge!!! They give free samples to try and figure out which one you'll be ordering. I chose the large Italian wedding soup and it was very good! Not the best I've ever had but definitely worth getting again. First time here and I enjoyed it. I got the avocado, cucumber and cheddar sandwich with lemongrass mayo, an honest tea and chips. It all came to about $12 which I was surprised I didn't spend more considering how expensive this area is. The space is nice and I ate inside. It loses points for cleanliness however. When I went to sit, every table was dirty including the benches. Someone didn't come by to sweep until more people came and sat so his movement was limited and by then he could have made a sandwich with what he swept up; not to mention that's not something I like to see while I'm eating. After many of those people left still no one came by to wipe the tables down. Otherwise I'll be back to try the soups. read more

You should never have your customers wait ten minutes for coffee, especially when i was not even dinning in. And i had to ask them to add ice to my 'ice coffee'... Not impressed with this lunch place, and it's also extremely expensive for the quality of food you're getting. Salads are not good, despite the choices of toppings. Sandwiches could be good, but they're usually not warmed through. Who wants a bite of cold sandwich?! The soup is good, especially the chicken noodle, but I don't even want to know how long it's been sitting there. I usually pay $20 for a drink, soup, and a piece of corn bread. I used to love D&B, but I literally threw up my hands and WALKED OUT while the guy was building my salad today. I don't plan to go back. REASON #1 - The owner and his army of food nazis. I was totallly rushed to make my next item selection. I'm from the north - I talk and operate and abnormally quick speeds - and I couldn't even keep up. I felt entirely flustered and was just waiting for him to yell "NO SALAD FOR YOU" and move onto the next person. Clearly I wasn't the only one feeling rushed. The guy mixing my salad had BEADS of sweat COVERING his face. I feared some of them would run together and drip into my salad!! REASON #2 The owner is CHEAP!! He stands behind the staff and yells at them if they dole out the slightest bit more than what he's allotted for each salad item. He used to just be cheap with the good stuff (that cost $1-$2), but now he's rationing the less expensive items too! First, the employee put like 4 pieces of diced tomatoes in my salad - pretty lame, but I didn't complain. Then he added in the shrimp, which are about the size of 1/2 my pinky finger. After he dropped a tong-full of them in, he actually reached back in, removed 1, and put it back. Really?? THEN I ordered avocado. He picked up 1/3 of an avocado and proceeded to cut it in HALF. That's like a sixth of an avocado, for $1!?! At that point I looked right at him and said "Are you serious?" I didn't wait for him to reply, I just turned around and walked out. The girls at the register are always friendly. And there is one salad guy who is too (but he wasn't there today). But the rest of the staff seem anxious and fearful of the owner's wrath. I don't blame the employees, it's totally the owner's fault. He needs to watch "Give 'Em The Pickle" and understand the value of customer satisfaction (FYI, not dirty - It's an extremely silly, but useful, customer service training video). read more

Sandwiches tend to be the best bang for your buck. Also, pretty amazing drink selection from fresh-brewed coffee and espresso to essentially any bottled drink you can think of. Seating: good luck - especially when it's lunch time and you get the rush of GW students, hospital staff and others. This place is a mad house, likely because of the convenience, but you'll probably have to give someone the evil eye for a table or find somewhere to sit outside. This location is small, so plan on take-out. Staff: I have never had a bad interaction. Even when it's busy, they are friendly, fast and attentive. I've walked by this place many times on campus and always smelled an amazing smell coming from here so my classmate and I decided to give it a try for lunch one day. This place can be overwhelming, there are so many different soups, sandwiches, and fix ins that you can make into a salad! Their selection has something for everyone and everything looked amazing. I decided to get the blackened chicken sandwich. I was happy they warmed it and made it toasty. Once I got to sit down and take my first bite into the warm, juicy, tasty sandwich I knew I had chosen the right place! I felt like they used quality ingredients and I liked how everything was already ready except for a quick warming making for a quick lunch if you are on the go! I was on my way from the Foggy Bottom Metro to Trader Joe's, & traditionally I've stopped to eat en-route. Normally I've gone to Marvelous Market, but I was interested in stopping at 1 of the new lunch spots that have popped up. Since Whole Foods hasn't opened yet, I opted for Devon & Blakely. The menu items are all laid out, under glass for you to choose from. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are not only sandwiches but salads, breakfast items, soups, desserts & side dishes. I chose a Salmon Sandwich, which came with cream cheese & cucumber slices on rye for $9.50. Taking it to the (nearly empty; it was a Saturday before 12) seating area, I started eating, & it was ... pleasant. DEFINITELY needed more dill, but otherwise refreshing & not salty at all. It's a big sandwich, well-priced, & I didn't feel disappointed, tho I think I'll go for the Cobb Wrap on my next visit. Staff all courteous, & premises seemed very clean. Never left here unhappy- I think their salads are better than those at Sweetgreen and usually and a pretty good value even with meat! Be sure to ask for bread at checkout and they'll give you a free slice. Sandwiches are delicious but pricy. The southwest sandwich is my favorite but I hardly ever get it because a salad is usually cheaper. If it was closer to $7, I might get it more often. read more

*4.5 stars* After my experience with a roach at sweetgreen, i've offically switched to D&B. The guys at the salad bar know how to get those salads made quickly and you are never stuck in line too long. While it is a bit pricey, you get what you pay for - the ingredients are fresh and there are plenty of options (recommend fresh jalapenos on your salad!). I can't speak for the sandwiches though, because people always seem to be waiting around for their sandwiches to get heated up etc. Tip: wheat bread way better than the white bread. read more
