I saw "a day in the life of an Indian master chef" on YouTube and made it my mission to swing by. I was not disappointed! To preface, I am not a fan of lamb/mutton because it is gamy, so I was hesitant to get it here, but this is one of the dish they're known for. WOW there was no gaminess at all, the mutton was full of flavor (they throw in an entire garlic bulb when making it!) and was my favorite dish of the night. You HAVE to get this, mutton fan or not. Some Indian places make their dish on the sweeter side which I'm not a fan of, but not Dhamaka! The goat biryani was also awesome and not dry at all like most Indian places I've had. It was really big and could be shared among 3 people. I am not a fan of paneer, but was pleasantly surprised with the paneer here. I would have to disagree with the vast majority of Yelp reviews that it's their best dish, as I say the mutton is. I probably won't get the paneer again because it's my personal preference, but it's a must try if you haven't had it before! Super soft and faint flavor of milk/cheese. The burnt cheesecake came out fresh & hot. Not overly sweet and reminded me a lot of sponge cake. It had a strong eggy flavor which I'm a fan of. Overall, the best Indian food I've ever had. Reservations are hard to snag, so you have to make it the moment they come out either 9am or 10am EST, or check their website everyday in case someone cancelled. The restaurant is INSIDE the Essex market so that isn't really safe during a pandemic when large amounts of people can walk in and out due to visiting other vendors. People choosing not to wear masks aren't being monitored. Their outside seating area is under a tent so that's not pandemic-safe and should not be considered outdoor dining because you're still in an enclosed space. The food- certain dishes are spicier than others so be careful what you order and they use a TON of spice on their spicier dishes. I had their lamb dish and my mouth was on FIRE. The tables aren't that spaced out, remember they are inside of a market so they have limited seating available anyway. Last time I was there they didn't offer take out, which during the time of COVID-19, a restaurant should definitely have take-out as an option. I didn't like the female floor manager, she barely greeted us but when some other guests arrived shortly thereafter, she seemed more upbeat. The outdoor seating area was terrible - there were barely any heaters, and the chairs were freezing metal (at least a small cushion would be nice). It was impossible to take off my winter jacket because it was so cold. The staff didn't seem to care that everyone was freezing and uncomfortable. In addition to the poor seating, the service was terrible. The food finally arrived, but it was not up to the standards I would expect from a Michelin Star Indian restaurant. But I guess its unapologetic Indian food so I won't waste time talking about it. Overall, I would not go back to this restaurant again. The food is colorful and intensely flavored, and the atmosphere vibrant - just like the streets of India! Its impressive how well Dhamaka is able to translate the flavors of regional Indian street stalls/carts into their small space at Essex Market. This really helps elevate Indian food or give folks a new point of reference for the cuisine in NYC. my family and i really enjoyed this place. We dined in and shared a few plates between the 4 of us. The goat neck biryani and the chicken tikka masala we ordered were very good, but a little spicy for our youngest. The garlic chicken dish was better for him.
