This is about how we were treated last night -- not the food. I really avoid giving poor reviews but in this case, I think others need to be aware of what they may encounter even with a reservation at DiMaggio's. I write this as someone who enjoys their food and has spent many hundreds of dollars there in the past. Last night, I arrived a few minutes early for our 6:15 reservation for a party of 2 while my dining companion was parking her car. The hostess took me to a table outside, on their empty patio, and said it was the only table they had. I explained that sitting in 105 ℉ heat and very high humidity around a sea of empty tables would not make for a pleasant dining experience. Do you have another table, please? Recognizing that their tables were probably all booked, I offered for us to sit at a high-top in the bar area or at the bar, if that would help. There were open high-top tables and several open seats at the bar. Well, even that was fruitless. I was informed that the open bar seats were "reserved for the owner's daughter," which was an effective way of telling me my business is unimportant to them. Meanwhile, an older gentleman in a suit who appeared to be a host, stood there watching the situation and doing nothing to help honor our reservation. So, I left. As someone who enjoys their food and has patronized DiMaggio's on multiple occasions, their dismissive treatment left me not wanting to return. So, if you have a reservation, I suggest confirming that they have an acceptable table for your party's needs. And as for the guy in a suit, next time do something to help your guests and hostesses alike. read more

If you're looking for good Italian food, this is a good contender. This place came highly recommended and has experienced a significant amount of attraction from social media posts. That is quite evident upon walking into a very small but crowded restaurant. I highly recommend having a reservation because even with one, you will probably have to wait for your table. Our server was Jeremy. He was super helpful in explaining the must have as this was our first time here. You can tell he was definitely honest and passionate. We started with the Crudo of the week, which I believe was Ahi tuna with pomegranate and some type of orange citrus... No real qualms, it was fresh, but kind of fell out a place for the restaurant. Upon Jeremy's recommendation, we got the lasagna and a spicy rigatoni. The lasagna is limited availability so keep that in mind if you're coming specifically for that. However, should the lasagna not be available, just order the spicy rigatoni, you will not be disappointed. The portion sizes here are quite generous, which is fitting for an Italian restaurant. My partner, and I could've easily shared one entrée. In fact, the lasagna is gargantuan. My jaw dropped when I saw it come to the table, it is that massive. Both of the entrées were delicious. It's homestyle comfort food through and through. The spice rigatoni is a very bright acid with the tomato sauce complemented by a slight heat from the Calabrian chili, and all brought together with perfect Al dente rigatoni and sweet, Italian sausage. The lasagna was meaty, rich, and heavy, but in a satisfying way. Definitely one of the better lasagnas I've had at a restaurant. As far as drinks go, I had two glasses of Sangiovese, which were pretty fairly priced, and my partner had two cocktails, which were a bit more on the expensive side. He liked them, but didn't love them. The smoked old-fashioned is kind of what they're known for in the drink department. We received a complementary tiramisu as we were celebrating an anniversary, and it was very charming. Definitely very rich and creamy, not so much espresso and very light on the lady fingers. All in all, we spent around 191 before tip, which is what we expected. You definitely get the impression it's a neighborhood spot, but not neighborhood prices..if that makes sense. You can dress it up or down, but the entrées were definitely on the expensive side for what the atmosphere sells itself as. That being said, I am eager to come back and explore the menu a bit more. Di Maggios (and our server, Vince) made our anniversary so special! We had an amazing first experience here. I saw a few of my foodie favs talking a out Di Maggio's on IG and it just so happened to be our anniversary week so I snagged a reservation. I did book a table at the patio and there are intense misters on. I did not know this, oops. But our server was so nice and accomodating and they were able to move us to a table inside. We got a nice little booth and were both amazed at the service we received. Vince is super knowledgeable about the restaurant, the history, the chef and dishes. Choices were hard to make but we landed on the arancini, the Don meatball, chicken parm and chicken alla michele. For our anniversary, we got a couple of drinky drink surprises which was so thoughtful. Don't skip dessert here - order the cheesecake! Apparently it is made by the chef's wife and was so delicious. We came to DiMaggios to celebrate my birthday with a party of 4 and this is easily one of the best Italian restaurants in Phoenix. This restaurant is very intimate and full of many authentic Italian dishes. There is no bad dish here, but my absolute favorites were the meatball for appetizer and barolo short rib pasta for entree. One of the only downsides to this restaurant is that it's smaller and not many tables compared to traditional restaurants, so the only way you're going to eat here is getting a reservation which can sometimes require up to 1-2 weeks in advance depending on the weekend. If you're lucky enough to get a resy here, then you'll be extremely happy with your experience because it's definitely worth it. read more

First time going to DiMaggio's since they moved to a new location and I was blown away by the new spot! The ambiance is great and feels like the perfect spot to grab a meal with friends or family. Our server did a great job of explaining all of the dishes and helping us decide on what to order. My favorite dish was the Veal Parmesan, it was pounded very thin and cooked perfectly. The other special, Tortellini, was homemade with a delicious creamy Parmesan sauce. For starters, we loved the house mozzarella, some of the best fresh mozz I've had in Arizona! Delicious entrees! We Came here on a Friday night. We had reservations and were seated within a few minutes. We were provided bread and olive oil while we waited for out food (plain oil, I would've liked if it had some seasoning or herbs in it for taste). Totally disappointed. Where do I begin? Very overpriced. Very underwhelming. The food sucked. For starters, we wanted to start with a round of drinks and an appetizer while we decided what we wanted for entrées and sides.Sorry, the waitress informed us, the kitchen prefers you order everything all at once! Onto the entrées - linguine and clams, and chicken Parm with linguine marinara.The linguine and clams again was another bland fest. Linguine, some clams, some oil, and a lot of heat from the Calabrian chili. No flavor of garlic, or parsley, or white wine, or salt, nothing. Chicken Parm was a disaster, for $49 It should be lights out, but it was far from it. The chicken cutlet was flimsy, soft, instead of crispy.,The marinara was meh. The only thing they got right was that the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. A couple bites of each entrée and we were done. Didn't even ask for the entrees to be boxed up to go, the entrées were that lame.We'd had enough. Server could tell we were not pleased with the entire experience, offered us a free shot of lemoncello which we respectfully declined got our check paid and left. The place was packed on a Tuesday night in July, I and other people who've had similar experiences here just don't get it. Is it the social media buzz? I follow several local food influencers on Instagram and their praise of this place is over the top super effusive, are they getting reimbursed? Just not impressed. What I liked: the fine dining table setting, it was all very even and seams faced down. The wood-fired oven on the floor with fresh bread coming out. The baked rigatoni was pretty good. And the bartender, who wasn't even our server, was the happiest guy alive. But that's about it. I didn't like the Caesar salad, and the house meatball, calamari, and tomato mozzarella were really no good. There were 9 of us stuffed at a table, which is... eh, fine I guess. Went to Di Maggio's and accidentally ordered "the entire comfort-food section" of the menu... no regrets, just a very happy food coma. We started with the bread + olive oil + balsamic, which is basically a trap. You tell yourself "just one piece" and then suddenly the basket is empty and you're bargaining for more like Oliver Twist. The arancini were legit--crispy little rice bombs with a creamy center, perfect with marinara. The Caesar salad was fresh and crunchy with plenty of parm (the kind of salad that almost convinces you you're being responsible). The broccolini was garlicky, tender, and exactly what you need to balance out everything else you're about to do to yourself. Main event: chicken parmesan was the table favorite--big portion, gooey cheese, and a bold red sauce that tastes like it's been simmering for hours. The lasagna was rich, saucy, and comforting in that classic "I should've worn sweatpants" way--layers on layers, lots of cheese, very satisfying. Side note, this is only available on select days. We finished everything off with the cheesecake and even though we were completely stuffed we made room for quite possibly the best cheesecake I've ever had at a restaurant. (My sister still holds the record for best cheesecake.) Why not 5 stars? Our server was a bit forgetful, we had to ask a couple times for bread, sauce, water. In the end a couple bites leaned a little heavy/rich and we were fully stuffed halfway through (not a problem, just a warning--pace yourself unless you enjoy waddling). Overall though, this is a solid go-to spot for a cozy Italian dinner where the food feels generous and the vibe makes you want to linger. We've been dying to try this place after seeing it all over social media and hearing friends rave about it. We finally went last week for my birthday on a Thursday night, and it was absolutely slammed! Definitely make a reservation. The restaurant has indoor, bar, and outdoor seating, all with a great atmosphere. The New York Italian theme really shines through with the red booths, vintage photos, and classic mob-style vibe. Unfortunately, the service was a big disappointment. We sat down at 6:15, ordered cocktails right away, and didn't receive them until about 6:50. We actually saw them sitting on the bar for nearly 15 minutes and had to ask our server where they were. The issues continued when she tried to rush us into ordering dinner before we even had our drinks. After our appetizer, we ordered a bottle of wine, and about 20 minutes later she came back asking if we wanted any other drinks--clearly forgetting the bottle we had already ordered. That said, the food was outstanding and truly made up for the poor service. We started with the clams in white wine sauce, which were incredibly fresh and generously sized. For dinner, we had the Alfredo Diablo and the Chicken Parm, and both were fantastic. The Alfredo was silky and perfectly balanced with Calabrian chilis, while the chicken parm had a bold, garlicky, basil-forward red sauce. We loved both dishes. For dessert, we had the olive oil cake, which was rich, moist, and delicious. We finished with the house-made limoncello and were blown away--it wasn't that artificial bright yellow you usually see, but a light, natural color that clearly showed it was homemade. The food was decent. We had made a reservation for my brother's birthday plenty of time in advance. When we got there the day of, they gave us a table outside in 115° weather so we asked if we could be moved inside and the hostess told us they had recently accepted a 40 PERSON dinner party on a Sunday night and that there was absolutely "no room"inside for anyone else. On top of that our waiter told us we'd have to be patient because the chef would be focusing on them, so we'd "probably be waiting a while". We didn't know that until we had been fully seated and ordered drinks/apps already. Everyone else who came to get seated and found out it would have to be outside was extremely disappointed as well. Everything was authentic, flavorful, and beautifully cooked. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and attentive service really put the experience over the top. This is the kind of spot that makes you want to come back again and again. The homemade mozzarella was absolutely delectable and the homemade pasta had the best flavor and practically melted in your mouth; in the best way! The portions are ginormous and perfect for sharing. With everything being prepared from scratch, you may wait a little longer for your food, but trust me, it's worth the wait. The eggplant stack and the lasagna are also a must order. This place has been getting a lot of hype on social media so finally gave it a try. I would say it's fine and nothing out of the ordinary. Very traditional home style Italian. Much smaller of a restaurant than I thought, but felt like you stepped into an old school Italian hole in the wall. Place was pretty busy for a 6pm on Saturday. It was a party of 2 and we were warned up front that the food is all made from scratch so it takes a bit longer for it to come out. Overall was a 2 hour dinner and we were done a little after 8. Took about 20 mins to get a glass of wine and bartender forgot to make my old fashioned so it was another 10 mins to get that after the wine already came. Apps we ordered the fried calamari, which next time wouldn't it order. It was lightly breaded with marinara to dip. It was just ok. Ordered the bocconcini which was pretty good. Gooey melty mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto. It took probably about 30 mins after we finished appetizers for mains to come. The veal parm, which is award winning, was very good. Market price was $85, which was a bit steep. Also ordered the linguini and clams which was very good as well. Overall, it was fine. longer than expected to get drinks, apps, and mains. read more

Went to DiMaggio's tonight for the first time and loved it! Jeremy was our server and he was great. I had the short rib with the pasta that has a Gorgonzola sauce and it was incredible! I also highly recommend the whipped ricotta appetizer. Sooo good! The rest of our party had the lasagna, the bolognese, pasta with clams, shrimp scampi, and spicy rigatoni. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We had the cannoli dessert and the chocolate dessert as well. Soooo good! Although it is a Saturday evening we are also in June and typically restaurants here aren't as busy in the summer but they were packed. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff were so sweet to write us a handwritten note, this really started off our night on a good note so props to you guys! As a lemoncello connoisseur, their lemoncello in general was fantastic and the spritz was very refreshing and bright! It makes me very happy to know that they make everything from scratch, including some of their liquors. A little intimidated by the menu, I asked our server what he recommended. He was very knowledgeable and very descriptive when explaining the dishes! I got the short rib pasta, and my boyfriend got the shrimp linguine. This was seriously one of the best pastas that I've ever had! On both of our meals, the protein was just incredible. The shrimp was tender flavorful and I appreciated them keeping the shell on the shrimp it just tasted so fresh! For my short rib, it was just truly incredible. The sauce was rich and flavorful without being too heavy or overwhelming. The short rib just melted. Honestly, in this day and age it's very hard to find places like this in my experience where the service is top-tier. The ambience is welcoming, warm and you can taste the actual care and love that goes into everything that they put out. I look forward to bringing my friends and family to try this gem.
