My sister and I stayed here for several days and did not feel it was unsafe. But know what you're getting into. There is a tiny lobby that's open from 8 am to 8 pm. The rooms are tiny -- think European capitol-sized -- with concrete block walls. The elevator is on the street, next to the lobby, and is accessed with your room key, right from the sidewalk. The carpet hasn't been cleaned in many months (or maybe years) and the pillows and sheets are not new. There is a Korean BBQ food truck next door and you can smell BBQ being grilled all day and Into the night (this was not a negative for us, BTW). There is no housekeeping service unless you're staying for over a week. There is no pool or gym. This is not a resort hotel by any means. But you're a couple of blocks from the beach in the middle of Waikiki. How much time are you going to spend in the room, anyway? If you're like us, not much. And you can borrow beach towels and boogie boards for that beach visit -- and use the sunscreen and the mosquito spray before you head out on adventures. There are dozens of restaurants within just a few blocks. As long as you're not entertaining customers or having a romantic weekend, it's a great place to stay.

If you can put up with the Korean BBQ smell all day from the food truck next door, you'll be fine. If you're on a budget, this is the spot in Waikiki.

Master bathroom is spacious with a large jet tub, one sink vanity, and small shower. Also the dining table fits 6 but is slightly too large for the room as you can't move around ppl if you're trying to get by. The staff we met were very nice and not overly pushy and they offered us guava juice when we arrived. On our last day we received a fresh lei which I left at the front desk as I didn't know if it was allowed on the plane.

Jessica at the front desk helped check us in and escorted us to our room. We were greeted with leis, juice and moist towels. We were given a complimentary beach bag with our own water bottles, and sunscreens. We had chocolates as a gift on the table at arrival as well. The hotel upgraded us to an unobstructed view of the beach on the 7th floor. We were awestruck by the beauty. We were welcomed to a beautiful unit with hawaiian music playing from the stereo in the background. The welcome was so wonderful. We had a beautiful pool and spa to use and a very nice weight room as well. Water refill stations were available all around the hotel which was also a nice bonus. The property manager, Midori, was responsive and tried to communicate on our behalf through the platform, but the owner's response and the overall condition of the unit were very disappointing. A vacation should be about rest and relaxation, but my stay in this unit was overshadowed by several clear inconveniences and safety hazards: 1. Plumbing & Maintenance Issues: The main bathroom sink ran hot on both handles. Having to wait a minute to flush out hot water to reach a usable temperature is unacceptable, especially with a young child who complained about the hot water while using the sink. Management dismissed this after our departure by stating the water merely "runs warm," ignoring the fundamental expectation that one handle should run cold and the other hot. Additionally, the tub spout in the small bathroom drips water while the shower is running--while not an immediate emergency, replacing the diverter/spout would prevent unnecessary water waste. 2. Odor, Filter & Lighting: We experienced a lingering odor related to the water tray/refrigerator area as well as flickering lights in the small room. I even had to notify Midori and Elaine during our stay that the refrigerator's "replace filter" light had come on, highlighting a general lack of proactive maintenance. Management brushed off our concerns by noting there were "no past complaints," treating the issues as if they were fabricated rather than addressing the actual problems present during our stay. 3. Disturbances: I stayed in the small room to the right of the front door and was subjected to loud early morning construction and street noise starting as early as 4:00 AM. When this disturbance was raised, owners/management offered no solutions or basic noise mitigation, such as providing earplugs or noise-canceling headsets, leaving guests to suffer through sleep disruptions during a time meant for relaxation. Hoping to resolve things amicably, I raised these reasonable concerns and reached out to ask if the owner would offer a partial refund as a gesture of goodwill for the disruptions and safety issues. Unfortunately, no compensation or goodwill gesture was granted. Instead, the owners chose to focus on self-defense rather than guest comfort or committing to actual repairs. A prime location and spectacular view cannot make up for unaddressed safety hazards, persistent noise, basic maintenance failures, and a complete refusal to offer customer recovery. Future guests considering booking this center oceanfront suite on Airbnb on the 11th floor (specifically Unit 1102) should be aware that ownership tends to dismiss valid feedback rather than taking accountability. Note to Future Guests: As shown in the resort's response below, Aston Waikīkī Beach Tower management does not oversee Unit 1102. When booking this unit as a private vacation rental, you are entirely reliant on the private owner/property manager, who declined to address these maintenance and safety concerns.

I did have to go down myself just for amenities. We got our room switched into another at our 2nd day as the first one has very loud air conditioner that's also not working properly as it's not cold. Plus the coffee machine didn't work. Reaching them via text to the number given when checking in got our problem solved. The downsides were prolly small bathroom and not-so-clean room makeup. I could still find pieces of bar soap on the bathroom floor stayed for couple days and the towel was occasionally having musty smell. They did provide parking space at $52 incl tax per night.

Polynesian Residences Hotel - Waikiki…read more This was, without question, the worst hotel stay I've ever experienced. I stayed at the Polynesian Residences Hotel in Waikiki from July 22-27, 2026. On my first night in Room 505, I woke up to find bugs--specifically roaches. The refrigerator was also dirty and unsanitary. After reporting the issues, I was moved to Room 305 the following day. Unfortunately, Room 305 was noticeably smaller than the room I had originally paid for. After returning from a wonderful day exploring Hawaii, I took a shower and discovered water covering the entire bathroom floor because the shower door would not close properly and the bottom seal was damaged. That same evening, around 8:40 p.m., I was moved again, this time to Room 513. Since it was late, I didn't have an opportunity to thoroughly inspect the room until the next morning. What I found was unacceptable. The room had not been vacuumed, there were dead moths on the floor, the bed skirt was stained and dirty, the shower was deteriorating, and there was mold around the bathroom sink. On Sunday afternoon, around 1:00 p.m., while I was taking a nap, housekeeping entered my room unexpectedly. I had been unable to place the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the outside of the door because it was stuck in the metal door fixture. What concerned me even more was that I could not lock the door from the inside, which made me feel unsafe. I expected someone to come and repair the lock after I reported it, but no one ever did. Throughout my stay, I took photographs and videos documenting the roaches, the dirty conditions, the maintenance issues, and the safety concerns. I showed everything to both the front desk staff and the hotel manager. Despite having clear evidence of the problems, nothing was done to resolve the issues other than repeatedly moving me from one room to another. None of the rooms met the standard I expected for what I paid. My visit to Hawaii was absolutely amazing, and I truly enjoyed the islands. However, my experience at this hotel was extremely disappointing. Between the cleanliness issues, multiple room changes, maintenance problems, and the lack of security, I cannot recommend staying here. If you're planning a trip to Waikiki, I strongly suggest choosing a different hotel. My vacation was memorable for all the right reasons--except for my stay at the Polynesian Residences Hotel.

Smells of cat urine smack you in the face the moment you open that room door. The floors feel dirty and nasty. The air is thick and smells like mildew and cat piss. You instantly regret believing those online profile pics. You realize you've been catfished. The valet person is unfriendly and you first think, "hmm. Maybe just a bad day." You go to check-in and that's a breeze. You walk towards the elevator and look back and see the receptionist who checked you in is looking at you. Later, you realize he's wondering how long you'll last. You go into the dated and dirty-floored elevator that took too long to get to you. It takes you up to the fourth floor where you enter into the lair of doom. A flimsy lock opens at your keycard and in you go. Peeling wallpaper, dirty doors, lifting floor tiles, stained windows. You feel like this is a mistake. Your family is too afraid to get into bed. They keep their outside clothes on to protect them from bedbugs. You go downstairs to ask to be moved to another room. The night worked, Yuta or Yura greets you with kindness. He apologizes and says that they're all booked up and no rooms are available. You ask him to check if someone might be leaving tomorrow so you can get an idea if there's somewhere to move to tomorrow. He apologizes and says that he can't share that info. You're confused. Why can't he check the computer and see who is leaving tomorrow that might open up some availability for you? You ask to clarify. "So, can you give me some kind of guess or estimate to see who might be leaving tomorrow? Or some kind of idea if the answer will be yes or no if we can change rooms?" He then begins to repeat himself three or four times while blinking profusely. "I'm so sorry I can't help you. I'm so sorry I can't, I'm so sorry I can't help you." Panic hits you as you've seen 20/20 and First 48 and this type of outburst looks familiar. You apologize and slowly back away. Now you have to find a new hotel because what the heck was that? You try to get some rest after a long flight and strange encounters. But you can't. There's yelling, hooting, hollering, and a loud and obnoxious bass thumping in the distance. All. Night. Long. Finally at 3 a.m. you look outside and see, there's a club outside and the patrons have now gathered in the street just below your balcony across the street. It doesn't matter that the windows and doors are all closed, these sliding doors are from the 80s and they're paper thin. Finally, morning arrives and you get up to watch the sunrise. That's nice. After you head back, you go to check out their "continental breakfast". It's just an awful joke that won't stop giving. After everyone in your family is awake and your bags are packed, you go to leave. Before leaving, you stop and talk with the receptionist, Yama, Yana, or Yara. She says she'll refund the resort fee since there is no true resort. She's heard these same complaints before and did not seem shocked at my reporting at all. This place is ideal for someone on a budget, traveling without kids, and who doesn't mind a little dirt under their fingernails. I get home a week later and find that the resort fee was not refunded, and I have to call them back again. After all fees and taxes, a one-night stay in Leonardo DiCaprio's nightmare motel was about $548 USD. Wow. What a tale.

We were lucky enough to have a room facing the pool, so it felt like we could step right into vacation every time we walked outside. One of the biggest surprises was the Green Lady Cocktail Room, a hidden speakeasy right on the property. It made the hotel feel even more special and secluded. Easily one of the highlights of our trip! The hotel also has its own parking lot for anyone renting a car, and the location is right in the heart of everything. You're within walking distance of Waikiki's restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and the beach, making it easy to explore without needing to go far. We stayed four nights, and for the value, charm, and location - I would absolutely stay here again. I recently got back from a 3-night stay at White Sands. I've been to the Heyday Bar before and…read moredecided to try White Sands this time while traveling with my parents. Unfortunately, it was a bad decision. Let's start with the neighborhood. There were a lot of sketchy people hanging around the area, and the hotel itself felt run down. The hallways were filthy, with stained carpets, trash, and large containers left sitting in the middle of the walkways. Doors slammed at all hours of the night, causing enough noise and vibration to repeatedly wake us up. My parents stayed in one of the Tradewinds rooms, which overlooked a strange apartment building--not exactly the view you'd hope for. The hotel seems to cater primarily to a younger, party crowd. There were lots of guests in their early 20s coming back after 2:00 a.m., often loud and intoxicated. My parents had a couple next door arguing late into the night, making it difficult for them to sleep. If you're traveling with family or you're over 30 and looking for a relaxing stay, this probably isn't the place. The property also showed plenty of wear and tear, including chipped paint and a general lack of upkeep. One afternoon they hosted a pool party with a DJ, which had a fun atmosphere and good music. However, they removed many of the chairs and swings from the bar area, leaving almost nowhere to sit. It became mostly standing room only. They also suspended the daily happy hour during the DJ event while increasing drink prices, which felt disappointing. I also tried sitting in an empty chair near the beach equipment, but an employee at the front (a white guy with tattoos) actually turned the chairs around so no one could use them. It came across as unnecessarily rude. I will give them credit where it's due. The food at Heyday was very good, and I appreciated the $20 daily dining credit that could be used there. The beds were comfortable enough, but the sheets didn't even smell freshly washed, which didn't inspire confidence in the cleanliness of the room. Overall, I'd give White Sands 2 out of 5 stars. It felt more like a budget motel than the 3-star hotel it advertises itself to be. I'd recommend visiting Heyday for the food and bar, but I wouldn't recommend staying at White Sands if you're traveling with family or simply looking for a clean, quiet, relaxing hotel. Let's not forget poor WiFi.
