It's slow even though there was only one person in front of me. Nice ambiance and colorful display of Asian chips, nuts, gift boxes, and food. Prices are slightly more expensive than Asian supermarkets, but they have some unique snacks I've never seen. Arrived around 4:30 pm for shaved ice. The employee taking the orders was rude and not friendly. They close at 5 pm. Once the order arrived , one of the orders was incorrect. Was advised I ordered incorrectly in a rude tone however, when I asked to review the order they realized they were wrong and I did order correctly. I said before you advise a customer they ordered incorrectly you should check the order to confirm. As others were eating they began whipping the tables and placing chairs on the table tops. Finally got to stop in a month ago and tried their mochiko chicken plate. In an area where your selection is limited to chain "Hawaiian bbq" restaurants, this was such a breath of fresh air! Massive portions and crispy juicy chicken. Truly on par with some of the better plate lunches I've tried in Hawaii. One plate is definitely portioned enough for two. I also noticed lots of island snacks/products for sale on the shelves while waiting for the food to be prepared. If you're from Hawaii and you're coming here expecting some semblance of GOOD home island cooking; this is not it. The service was whatever because you really just go to the front and order and grab your food, think going to McDonald's type ordering. The ambiance and the vibe seems like it should be Hawaii and it resembles it in an okay manner. The food is very very MID. First of all the price plays into how well I think the food is, but only in conjunction with how good it tastes. In other words, if the food tastes good, I have no problem paying more. Obviously the main attraction is not garlic shrimp, it's going to be local staples like loco moco or poke, but I ordered the garlic shrimp anyway. I also got the garlic ahi. First of all I've never paid 30 dollars for a poke bowl until today. The price is unjustified, the poke is cut into big chunks and the portions are big; but the overall taste is very reminiscent of foodland poke (okay but not good enough to be 30 dollars and foodland is waaay cheaper). The garlic shrimp was the worst dish I've ever had at any Hawaiian restaurant in Cali. Holy god, the shrimp were definitely frozen, it was spongey when I bit into it and they overloaded it with garlic and no extra flavoring. Absolutely atrocious. I paid 80 bucks for two dishes and like 2 musubis, which AGAIN; if the food is good enough, I'll pay any price. But holy god the food was horrible. Also the musubi, why the hell is it 9 dollars?? Finding my way to San Bruno, this very non descript store front appeared. Friendly counter person, pleasant and patient took my order of fried chicken. Since I was in a Hawaiian store, I had a Hawaiian sun soft drink. Browsing the store, it has shelves of various goods and frozen stuff from the island. When the food, the counter person calls out my name. First of all the portions are quite generous. Fried chicken seated on a bed of shredded lettuce and soy sauce based gravy with healthy serving of rice and Mac salad. The chicken pieces were huge but I hate to admit that the soy gravy was too salty and drown the chicken. Nonetheless the Mac salad was good. I came across this place when I was looking for shave ice. We had a great experience our first time in. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon so we thought not many people would be out. Diamond Head General store was bustling! It's a tiny spot, if you blink then you'll miss it driving down el Camino. The inside has seating for eating. Three aisles of groceries and a deli style counter. There was only one party in line, but almost all the tables were full. We got our food to go. We got shave ice, two spam musubi, a loco moco plate, and a kalua pork plate. Everything was delicious and the portions were large. The Mac salad was better than some Mac salads I had in Hawaii. However the shave ice was not. It will hit the spot if you're having a craving, but it doesn't match Jojo's or Ululanis or most Hawaiian shave ice. This place is just as good as Morning Wood in my opinion, without the lengthy wait! This was the old location of Morning Wood, and they've converted it into a grocery/convenience store, with food options as well such as takeout loco moco and musubis. They also have a seating/dining area if you decide you want to dine there. The menu is smaller and more limited than Morning Wood, but if you're looking for something quick and easy, this is the spot. I ordered the mochiko chicken loco moco and it was HUGE. The portion was probably 2-3 meals and we were all stuffed afterwards with plenty to take home. The chicken was super flavorful and reminiscent of great popcorn chicken, except with the added bonus of being part of a loco moco! Super comforting, well made, and worth the price in my opinion. Well I don't understand why a place that doesn't serve you asks for a tip when it is basically giving you the food in a bag to go. Tipping should not be pushed when we are already paying for taxes. I don't ever eat the rice and mac salad but even just sticking to the meat and vegetables, I felt really bloated afterwards. Once again the Mochiko chicken is too sweet and not fried crispy enough. Kalua pork was kinda dry, stringy and a little bland, unless you eat it with the pickled onions or you eat the fatty parts. I was really excited to have found this spot when I was out here having lunch. Now I am bummed that I didn't get to try their lunch plates or poke, but I did get their shaved ice and I do admit it's the best shaved ice I have ever had outside of Hawaii. If you've been to Hawaii, you know how legit and authentic this place is. This is as close as it gets without taking a plane to the islands. Plate Lunch (!!!), malasadas, musubis, shave ice, better than zippy's chili, the list goes on and on! Plate lunch in a box is iconic, and I'm happy that Chad and Monica have brought their dishes to the bay. Portions are H U G E, enough for multiple people or meals. My go to is the mochiko chicken. Super unique fried chicken texture and flavor, with a ton of protein. Paired of course with rice and mac salad. Also, if you see anything seasonal, don't think - just get it. I once had a black sesame (aka gee-ma woo for the chinese folk) mochi muffin, with an adzuki (red bean) frosting on top. The texture was amazing, and I have to give the ultimate asian compliment, it's not too sweet. Really though, the flavor was deep, the texture amazing, and of course nice to look at if you care for that kinda thing. There is so much character in the stores. Their shave ice machines are named Lilo and Stitch! They stock a bunch of Hawaiian staples. They have a ton of fun treats, and I try a new one every time I go. Have not been disappointed yet. This is one of the very few Hawaii kine specific stores and hole in a da wall restaurants serving plate lunches. They have a pretty decent selection of local kine snacks that are almost impossible to find outside of the islands. Only a few other places in the Bay Area carry Hawaii kine goods like Marukai in Cupertino, Takahashi's in San Mateo, a few downtown J-Town stores in San Jose/SF, and in Nijiya/Mitsuwa stores. The one BIG thing they carry here that is super hard to find are the following: --Hawaiian Shave Ice !!! --Fried saimin (comes with flat egg and spam!) --Frozen Zippys chili (but expensive..) --Frozen Lau lau (also expensive...) The Hawaiian Shave ice is more like Shimazu's (but no Haupia cream topping here), and I still haven't been able to find one on the mainland that rivals Waiola's yet.... But finding one that is about as good as Shimazu's is still a pretty good find! read more

I recently found out about this place after walking by so many times going to a different restaurant. Decided to come on a Saturday morning and the place was already bustling. Upon walking in, I instantly felt like I was on vacation in Oahu. The highlight of my visit had to be their Fried Mochiko Chicken Plate. The crispiness of the chicken was perfect and the flavor was so delightful. The only downside for me was that the rice was a little too mushy. Waited almost an hour just to get overpriced musubis (ranging from $6-$9 each) that did not even taste that great. The rice to meat/topping ratio was off, way too much rice plus it had a very unpleasant overcooked/mushy texture. I'd go back to try the other dishes but probably not during a peak time when I have to wait almost an hour to place an order. Doesn't seem worth the wait. Morning Wood was great when it was a restaurant! We loved the ambiance and food. The wait was a little long. Now that it's Diamond Head, there's no wait and you can order ahead online. The prices are a bit higher than other Hawaiian places and that's because this spot says they use better ingredients and their chefs come from great backgrounds. I'm ok with paying for good food when it's justified; it's not everyday that you can get good Hawaiian food on the mainland. That said... - Loco Moco ($18) -- gravy was super brown (can be difficult to achieve), but was too salty for me. It was nice that the plate had a paper on top, so the gravy and contents didn't spill. It survived a car ride home. - Pineapple malasada ($6) - whatever is used to sustain the structure of the cream in the malasada made the cream chalky. Maybe this was a one off, but I'm not inclined to spend another $6 to find out. - Mac Salad ($6) had a ton of pepper. It was different, but not off-putting. - Butter mochi ($6) - Was too dense for me. I've spent two days dicing off little bite size pieces to finish it. - Fried Ahi Poke over crack fries was an interesting spin, but pretty steep for ($30) for the amount of fish. It was a very colorful dish though. Not my cuppa tea. - 2x Hawaiian Suns ($2 each) + 15% Service charge The grocery/snack side is a little overpriced imo. As many reviewers have already noted, the prices are steep, especially considering that 15% service charge is automatically added, even though there is no service (you order at the counter, and everything comes in to-go containers). Their justification is that they have to prepare the food, and that the ingredients are imported. I know that with inflation, pandemic, supply chain crisis, etc, prices are going up, but still when I have to pay over $100 for 3 dishes and two cans of drink, and I am eating at a counter in front of a grocery store, I have to question is what I am getting worth what I am paying. On the plus side, the food was tasty and the portions were huge for the rice plate entrees. The shave ice is also really good, but again high price. The fried poke over cracked fries I ordered was $30, and there wasn't much tuna. It was mostly fries, and I am eating it with plastic fork and recycled paper container. With the included service charge, this was costing me almost $35. For that money, I could have had a nice seafood dish at a upscale restaurant with much better ambience, so I definitely don't think it was worth the money. I am glad to have tried this place, but it wasn't so special that makes me want to come back. The Bay Area has lots of choices, and I think my money will go further elsewhere. read more

My Favorite Hawaiian plate lunch spot in the bay. I come here every other week for lunch. It's a market as well with some hawaiian favorites, they got zippys chili and Redondos musubi shaped Portuguese sausage in the fridge section which is pretty dope. My top 3 plate lunches are: The Mochiko Chicken which is the best I ever had, super crispy with a drizzle of that special soy glaze. Next is the meatloaf Loco Moco, this one is my jam, the patty is huge and very flavorful, and that gravy smacks, eggs cooked to perfection. And lastly is the schmokey poke its cold smoke hamachi topped with all da fixins which equals mean mean grindz in my book. I love this place. The only thing they need to improve is da Musubi, you be putting too much rice in there, you need to find the right balance of protein to Rice to topping, you fix the musubis and this place would be damn perfect. read more
