Finally made it to this hidden gem in San Bruno and it didn't disappoint. The store transported me back to my visit to Hawaii a few years ago. I ended up getting the bbq chicken plate. It was so big, it could feed a family of three. I'm not joking, it literally took me two days to finish it. But it was delicious! Can't wait to go back again soon.
Great selection and presentation. Lots of variety and friendly staff. Most grocery items have no prices tho, so sort of inconvenient having to ask about everything. Tried a musubi, cookie, hurricane dog. Tasty but a bit on the pricier side. Fun to check out if you're near by. Very limited street parking. Will come again to try the plates
Are you craving some Hawaii in the Bay Area? This is the perfect spot to go for all things Hawaii: musubis, poke, drinks, you name it. I'm so glad this place exists because you can get really quality poke with similar flavors to what you would find on the islands. Every time I go to Hawaii, I grab a bag full of spam musubis and these ones definitely do not disappoint. We got the fried chicken mochiko plate and the chicken was very flavorful and paired great with the white rice. The poke was also so fresh and they give you a good amount of fish. Aside from the food, there's also a bunch of grocery items, such as drinks, seasonings, and other Asian/Hawaiian-inspired products. There's enough space inside for seating if you want to eat there or you can easily grab and go. Definitely check this place out if you're craving a little taste of Hawaii!
Hidden gem kind of feel. We came on Sunday around 3 for shaved iced and picked up food to go. The place was busy, but the waiting was reasonable. Instantly felt transported once we stepped inside. The shaved ice is fun, but I thought it was a little on the small side. The mochi topping for an extra $1 was not sweet so we did not enjoy it. The hot food is delicious and generously portioned, but very salty. Love the mochiko chicken. Most of the snacks they sell on the shelves did not have price tags. The snacks are on the pricier side since they're not easy to get from regular grocery stores.
This place is clean, organized, and easy to navigate. As soon as you walk in and turn right, you'll find the musubi, onigiri, inari, cookies, and kimbap neatly displayed along the wall, with the menu posted above. You order at the counter, grab any open table if you're dining in, and they'll call your name when your food is ready. There are several tables available for customers who want to eat there. The middle of the store has a nice selection of Hawaiian snacks to browse, while the refrigerator along the opposite wall is stocked with drinks and a few side dishes, including kimchi, available for purchase. On this visit, we ordered the Shoyu Ahi Bowl with greens, the Hawaiian Style Ahi Bowl with greens, and the Kalua Pork & Cabbage plate. The Kalua Pork & Cabbage was the standout. It came with macaroni salad and rice, the portion was generous, the pork was tender, and the cabbage was soft, well-seasoned, and tasty. The ahi itself had a great texture and tasted fresh. However, both the Shoyu Ahi and Hawaiian Style Ahi bowls were already well-marinated, and the greens were dressed with the same sweet soy based sauce. The combination made the bowls a bit too salty and sauce heavy, which overpowered the natural flavor of the fish. By the time we finished our bowls, we found ourselves reaching for coconut water to help balance the saltiness. Overall, we enjoyed our visit. The restaurant was clean, the staff was efficient, and the Kalua Pork & Cabbage was definitely worth ordering. I just wish the ahi bowls had a lighter touch with the sauce so the freshness of the fish could really shine. We'd be happy to come back and try some of the other menu items. :)

Service: 4.0 (counter) | Ambiance: 4.0 DIAMOND HEAD GENERAL STORE at 260 ECR in San Bruno is a clean, great little place for refills of Hawaiian Islands pantry goodies and snacks, and hot lunch boxes. The pantry and snack items can be pricey but, hey, they traveled far to be here for you. They've got Zippy's in the fridge! Li Hing powder and Li Hing Mui, good signs of a connection to the Islands. Their hot lunch boxes are not to be missed, including their selection of Musubi's on the right wall as you enter. Take a glance at the menu on the wall, put in your order, pay, and wait. There's some nice seating set up inside across the space. Otherwise seems more of a take out place. Lunch boxes come w/rice, Mac salad. Kahlua Pork had some cabbage cradling the smoky pork. Ordered to go: KAHLUA PORK - loved the smoky flavors, a tad dry but really appreciated it was not overly salty like a lot of Kahlua Pork offerings. The pickled onions was especially a nice touch, and contrast to the smoky pork. The Mac salad was creamy, fresh but was missing something. I'd order this again for the Kahlua Pork and pickled onions alone. LOCO MOCO - ubiquitous beef patties, over rice, luscious gravy, topped with sunny side up eggs. My go-to fav whenever I see Loco Moco! This LOCO MOCO did not disappoint in flavors and taste but I could go with more, yes!, more of their delicious gravy! Maybe w/additional gravy on the side. DIAMOND HEAD GENERAL STORE will see a return visit to try their MOCHIKO CHICKEN, GARLIC SHRIMP, FURIKAKE MAHI, CRAB INARIS, MUSUBIS, CRACK FRIES, and their famous SHAVED ICE! See you there!
It is probably good I live almost an hour away because DAAAAANG this place is so good!!! I'd spend all my money here if I was any closer. The food was legit. The music was on point. The vibes were straight out of Hawaii. I LOVED my visit here. The mochiko chicken was so good. It rivals the best places in Hawaii and I say that as a self proclaimed mochiko chicken critique haha. The onigiri were awesome too. Next time I'll grab some other snacks too. They've got it all! I'll def be back!
Sad to see Morning Wood closed down in Burlingame shortly after we discovered it - very unique brunch options with a fun Hawaiian flare. Fast forward we stumbled upon Diamond Head General Store -saw the comment that it is related to Morning Wood! Set our GPS and my girls and I were on our way this past Sunday afternoon. SO GLAD WE FOUND THIS PLACE! In a small nondescript building off El Camino Real in San Bruno. Has an authentic vibe as you walk in to the store..the temperature inside also reflected the warmth. 60s outdoors but felt like upper 70s indoors. You walk into a spread of musubi and onigiris on the right side; on the left - shelves of Hawaiian spices, ingredients, snacks, and other specialty items with a row of fridges along the back wall carrying all kinds of Hawaiian and Japanese drinks and other delights. These visual delights lead you right up to the counter. IMPORTANT TO CHECK YOUR HEALTH AT THE DOOR! Not for the faint of heart or those with medical considerations. The dishes are loaded with flavor and that means a generous helping of salt and fried options. What we ordered and shared family style: CRACK fries: we LOOOOVED the CRACK fries - not only the taste but the fries stay uniquely cripsy even after rit cools a bit. 5/5 Moco Loco with Mochiko Chicken: the gravy was requested on the side - glad I opted for this as it was more saltier than I expected; drizzled a fraction of it on the rice for flavor. Generous helping of rice. The HAWAIIAN FIRE WATER (squeez bottle sitting on the table) paired AMAZINGLY with the Mochiko chicken. I enjoyed this pairing more so than the Moco Loco gravy with the rice and eggs. 4/5 CRUNCHY CHILI GARLIC CHICKEN - tasty but boy oh boy is it filling since it's batter held the oil. Comes with a side of MAC salad. A bit too rich for our bellies but no complaints on the taste. 4/5 MEAT JUN - entree available the day we came but don't see it up on the other Yelpers photos. Beef pan fried with a side of soy based dipping sauce. Comes with a side of MAC salad. 4/5 SHAVED ICE - ooh wee! This was a great end to the meal for my girls. They enjoyed the three flavors of mango, guava, ramune - a ring of sweet kazuki beans and a wooden stick of Mochis at the peak of the frozen ice. 5/5 Salmon/Avocado/Eel/Spam Musubi: 10/10 - rice was nicely seasoned and all the flavors just went together so well. Took it for snack later in the day - so very satisfying! Definitely plan to return for the Kayla pork, and try out some other musubis!
My daughter and I stopped in as we were in the side of the bay and I'm so glad we did. We were able to share a Hamburger Steak plate and a Shrimp Masubi. We were so full. We couldn't even finish the rice and Mac salad. Everything was delicious. So much I will gladly drive over from Hayward again. My daughter is looking forward to taking her BF as he stays close by. The Serb is was super friendly. Service was fast. The establishment is well kept. Restroom was very clean. Only thing I wish they had was a separate register for those buying grab and go items. Only because the lady behind me was on my neck and looking around me like that was going to speed things up. When pulling up, it's right after the smog shop. I missed it so I hope this helps you not pass it.
Diamond Head is a good lunch spot with big portions. Mostly a to go spot but they do have seating, which is first come first serve. Overall: 4/5 Ordered the kalua pork plate and a side of fries. The fries were thick cut seasoned with furikake. Excellent crunch and good flavor but thicker cut fries are just not my preference. Kalua pork was plate was good. Very large portions with a ton of pork. Pork had good flavor and wasn't dry like kalua pork can get sometimes. Cabbage was fine and Mac salad was good, very mayo heavy. A bit too wet for my personal taste. Will definitely come back to try the other plates, and shave ice. Would also love to try their musubis, but they were sold out for the most part by the time we showed up.
Super cool spot I wouldn't have found if I wasn't browsing on Yelp. The decor and vibe instantly brought me to Hawaii. Lots of options for food from rice plates to fries to musubi and shaved ice. They even have a little grocery section for Hawaiian food and drink. Everything is on the pricier side tbh. $21 for the bbq chicken plate and a canned coconut water from the fridge for $6. Rice plates were delicious and steaming hot made to order. Mac salad was creamy. Didn't like the tako fries really. Too fried and crunchy and loaded with sauce. Super heavy compared to the light and freshness of the rice plates. Overall I had a wonderful time here, and would likely come again. But be prepared to spend a little more than usual.
Diamond Head General Store is a like a touch of Hawaii in the Bay Area with hawaiian based snacks, drinks, even frozen Zippy meals available for purchase! They also serve hot food if you're looking for a bite to eat. Interior has some seating inside with a grocery store kind of feeling. No outdoor seating available. Parking is limited to street parking. A few notes: * Not everything in the store is labelled with prices * Hot food was pretty average in my opinion * Price vs value wasn't great in terms of quality of food Onto the hot food: * butter mochi - definitely the best thing we ordered here! Chewy buttery and soft in texture. Don't skip this. * garlic shrimp- this was recommended by the cashier but it was quite lacking in depth of flavor with the primary taste just being garlic. No spice, nothing special to stand out. After a while the sauce gets tiring. Mac salad was prominently peppery but bland in both texture and flavor. * Mochiko chicken - Not bad, crunchy battered chicken. Interior of the chicken was juicy but lacking in that distinct strong sweet savory that mochiko chicken is known for. Again, the mac salad was a letdown. Overall, the food was quite average especially for the price point. I can think of two places in SJ with better Hawaiian food for half the price.

I got the Mochiko chicken and my son got the bbq chicken, we also got some bread pudding for mom. Food was full of flavor and I knew about the 15% service fee so I plan to eat some cup of noodles a couple times this week to make up for it. After we were done, my son wanted some shaved ice. They charged the 15% service fee for that too! I probably will not come back unless someone else is treating. read more

Pretty disappointed. Family and I are huge fans of food and snacks found in Hawaii, so finding out about this store opening was exciting. Sadly, we didn't get what we expected. Plates stop being made at 2:30pm and are pretty expensive. A lot of their products are very overpriced and can be found elsewhere for less. Their shaved ice is pitiful. Chex mix was meh, definitely not worth $6. Save your money so you can make a trip to Hawaii. read more

When Morning Wood closed we were devastated, however Diamond Head General Store is super nice! They brought over the same favorite food items available to-go and many more off the shelf items as well. Great staff that is always ready to help. They now have shaved ice which I can't wait to try! This place is ok. My food came too burnt. I ordered loco moco and my patties was burnt and they make that gravy really dark to cover the burnt. I ate it but will never again order it. read more

Not sure if it was just my lucky day but I ordered the garlic shrimp and what I got was giant prawns. Garlic sauce was exactly how I like it and portions were generous. The strawberry puree on the shave ice was yummy but would be better paired with a syrup. So happy I got the li hing mango belts and love that they put poppables in their hurricane mix. The store was once Morning Wood . I wasn't able to try this place when it was Morning Wood . The food was sold out when I wanted to try Morning Wood . I didn't have a great experience at that time but I did a review on that place :) Anyways, it's the same owner as Diamond Head . I had rate a lower score due to the menu prices and items at the store are too high to begin . Plus there is a gratuity added to everything on the menu. I'm use to gratuity when it's a restaurant with at least a party . The establishment needs to review the gratuity. The place is a "order to go " or if you familiar with Hawaiian Drive in type but of a upscale drive in. Plus, when I paid there is an option to leave a tip. I assumed gratuity is the same as tip. The store has a mix of Hawaii type food and Asian food. It's great you can get the Hawaii snacks here . But, Knowingly for me I know what the prices at Hawaii are , their price is way too high. They had a Zippy frozen food for $20! And the crack seeds were $2-3 more than if you go to Hawaii Longs Drug. Majority of the items you can find at a Japanese /Asian market for cheaper. So, I ordered the Loco Moco. It's a $18 plate plus the gratuity price . Total was $22.75! The portion was decent size. I shared with my friend . But, we were still hungrey. The loco Moco was good . The gravy was rich flavor and meat patty didn't have much seasoned . But not a wow factor for the price . The Mac salad it came with was ok. The good thing it was not oily . I had asked for the gravy on the side . But , the lady said they couldn't put it on the side . Maybe they don't have containers for the sides! But , I'm sure they do because they have food to go. The lady was nice though. The spam musabi was $8.00! Average size . It didn't have much taste. Disappointed ! The total with gratuity was around $10! Overpriced! I expected to be a wow factor for the price . Overall, the gratuity added to the menu items need to be reviewed or at least change . I was reading the reviews about the gratuity going to the staff . I like the idea! But, it doesn't explain the high cost of the items and food menu . It's nice place to visit if you are willing to pay high price for a decent Loco Moco and Hawaii snacks . Food is still good as it was when it was Morning Wood. Set menu for most part but they may have a daily special. Good portion size for the price. 15% gratuity automatically added to your bill. Friend got the Mocchico chicken and it's huge. Got the crack fries to share, and we barley made a dent. I got the daily special chorizo and eggs, good but not quite the same portion of the chicken. They do have limited seating but mostly take out. They have some specialty drinks and food items from Hawaii for sale. Can't wait till Morning Wood reopens. read more

I just went for brunch with my family! I arrived 15 minutes after opening and expected the normal long line! It was so easy to place my order. Everyone inside was welcoming and kind. We got our food super fast! I also appreciate how the food is in cardboard boxes instead of plastic! It is so much easier to compost and help save the earth! Keep in mind, they add a 15% gratuity! I would have given them that anyway so I appreciate that they let you know so you don't accidentally add more. I walked around to look at the grocery's. I was curious about some snacks, but not enough to pay the price. It was a bit expensive. Go here for the food, not the grocery's. Sooo much food! Sooo yummy! read more

First time eating here since the name change to Daimondhead General Store. Wife wanted the mochiko pancakes but got the furikake chicken special. I got the mestloaf patty loco moco. The sauce on the chicken was strong flavored. Tasted great with the white rice. The gravy with the loco moco was sligh th ly salty but was good with the white rice. Food we ordered tasted similar to the Morning Wood food. Cost was slightly higher but was expected due to inflation. Price increase is similar to increases at fast food joints like McDonalds. Food quantity was generous. We are eating left overs for dinner. Price does not include a service charge. You get to select the amount of tip to leave. Was told the Morning Wood redstaurant will be open the end of next month. read more

Sooooo good! Came here at ~11.30 and no line. Ordered the loco moco with mochiko chicken, and the serving size is HUGE. Two eggs, heaping serving of rice, and two huge pieces of deep fried chicken thigh. Couldn't finish it and I have enough for a second meal now. They've added a 15% service charge and they're not pressuring anyone for an additional tip, so I don't think there's any cheating or price gouging going on? No problem with a 15% service charge for me - covid has hit restaurants hard and they're trying to make do with a labor shortage. Will definitely be back! read more

So happy this place is finally open! Their plate lunches are a little pricey but I say it's worth it because 2 people can share a plate. It's also really delicious and it satisfies my cravings as I reminisce my time in the islands. I also got a few things from the store - not pictured but I got the spicy furikake chex mix $8, the taro mochi waffle mix $8, 2 Hawaiian sun drinks $3 each and a coconut pocky (I forgot the price) Highly recommend to give this new spot a try. weekend afternoon visit and finding empty...hawaiian general store with spam, ramen and other goods...walking up to the order counter in the back...a menu posted above the walls...poke' bowls, fries, mac salads and more...prepackaged meals...a list of local dishes served hot...loco moco, kalua pork, bbq chicken, garlic shrimp, spam and more...most items will cost in the $20 plus range...taking a bbq chicken $19 and $20.88 after tax...adding tip to the jar...about 10 minutes of wait...the shear weight of the box was quite surprising...taking to-go for the office to eat...opening and finding a mountain of food...so much rice, mac salad and bbq chicken (grilled chicken)...one meal can definitely feed 2 adults without any issues....the main concern or issue is with the food quality...chicken definitely tasted like reheated leftovers...guessing the food is precooked who knows when and reheated...might be the reason why they serve meatloaf instead of hamburger...the amount of food and the price for the quantity is okay, but the food didn't taste fresh at all...edible, but not good...hopefully the spam or fried foods are cooked fresh... read more

Most of my experiences with this place kind of go like this: I look at the prices of everything in their store and on their menu and think it's overpriced, think about how much I resent the 15% service fee and walk out of the store with my food begrudgingly as I think about how I could've gotten a much cheaper meal somewhere else. And then I eat their "almost famous" fried chicken plate, which I split with my partner because the portions are huge, and think wow that might seriously be the best fried chicken I've ever had, no joke. Skin is perfectly crispy, meat is super juicy and flavorful, and the vinegar flavor gives just the right amount of acidity. I never liked mac salad growing up in hawaii, but the one in this plate is really delicious, not just filler. And by the ends i'm pretty happy and satisfied with what I've paid for I think you need to first think about the food here in terms of the portions, because $22 (including the gratuity and tax) for a fried chicken plate seems a bit ridiculous, but considering it should really be for two people, $11 a person, its actually not a bad value considering the high quality of the food you're getting, and how you can't find comparable food in the bay or even in hawaii read more

I think it's cool that they change the concept of their restaurant to this general store. It does give off that Hawaii vibe. Their rice plates are great, HUGE portion so you will get your money worth. I also tried the garlic ahi poke bowl which I didn't like as much. Shaved ice was alright, not something that I would go out of my way to eat from here, but I will definitely come back for the rice plates. I'm not a fan of the gratuity already included but also not against it. They do tell you that it's included so you are aware. In the picture I see a parking lot on the right side, does that parking lot belong to diamond head customers to park there for a short time to buy some thing?
There is only one space for them. You should be able to find street parking (no meters) on the same block.
Do they have outdoor seating? How about a phone number?
They did not have outside seating when I was there a few weeks ago.

Very small parking lot shared with other businesses. Street parking available in a busy street with other businesses in the area. I would recommend to be prepared to look for parking.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Otherwise open 10:30-5pm
