Awesome place have been going here since it opened Mitch has longtime dedicated staff (Sam at the bar) that really love what they do. Food is quite good and service is exceptional. Music when there is always a blast and has long been a traditional stop for me whenever I am in town visiting family. on more than one occasion, i've declared aloud, "dick odow's is my favorite bar in birmingham because it's the only place where you can forgo your sequined halter-top." mind you, i don't actually own a sequined halter top, but you get the point. i like to kick up my heels and have a good time in standard bar armor: jeans and a t-shirt. during a recent trip to this establishment., i found myself gazing across the room to get a good look at the other patrons. much to my dismay, i concluded i was the only female in the joint not wearing a sequined halter top. so much for my theory. don't let the machismo irish regalia fool you. dick o'dows is the corner bar in sheep's clothing. with that said, i still always manage to have a great time here. kimmy deserves all the accolades in the world- bartender with a heart of gold. i must say i greatly prefer this bar in the winter. during the summer months, it can sometimes embody the feel of a bunch of 'bros' kicking back 'adult sodas' at a frat party. one last note: If you have the stomach to tolerate the crowd on thanksgiving eve, it usually proves to be one hell of a party. read more

Came here a few times for after dinner drinks. Solid, large venue. Beers are good with a good variety available. Our waitress was nice and quick with service. Haven't really tried much of the food, but the chicken wings were pretty average. The prices are good, on par with most bars. This is a solid bar hang out. read more

I must admit, this is probably one of my favorite hang outs whenever I am in the Birmingham area (especially since I work in Bham). I've spent many nights after work hanging out at Dick O' Dows. I love their pulled pork sandwich, jack and coke and play Jenga with my downtime. Dick O' Dows is friendly, quick on the service and have someone playing live music every Friday night possibly other nights, but I just can't remember. LOL. The staff is very friendly and will have conversations with you. They don't get too into the conversation, they don't over talk like many bartenders do. read more

I came here with my cousins Bachelorette party back in 2006. This was the second bar we went to and it was such a great time. Nothing bad about this place; but nothing tremendous either. It's your basic Irish bar. Lots of pretty people drink here until 2am. Loaded with so-called hipsters, but I can tolerate them in small doses. If I was in downtown B'ham drinking (which I try to avoid), this would be the place I go. read more

I used to enjoy this place, when I was 21. If you're over 25...I would really not recommend it. It's fine for a quick nothing special lunch and a beer, but if avoid at all costs after 7-8pm, when it turns into a shoulder to shoulder house party where you can't hear yourself think. read more

I've spend many nights at Dick O'Dows. It's a very casual and friendly atmosphere, a very unique feeling in Birmingham. It's very much a pub with tons of seating and a decent kitchen. The food doesn't wow, but it's good. The beer selection is large enough so I can always find something I like. The staff is very friendly. I have had a few visits during peak times when it was hard to get the attention of a bartender, but generally you will never sit with an empty glass. read more

This place used to be great. Today was my first time back in around 10-15 years. Guess it was because St. Patties day was yesterday. Had the Irish Skins (potato skins). They were dry & burnt. I was amazed anyone would deliver food to a table that even looked like that. All I can figure was the staff must have been hung over or exhausted from the night before being St. Patties day?? Most of the staff looked like it. Second tried the Chicken Chili. Nice presentation with the chips on top but it had no flavor & only one piece of chicken in my whole cup. I added tabasco to make it editable. I sincerely hope Jon Taffer comes in to do a bar rescue of this place. It still has a decent relaxing low key vibe to it but it's pretty dated & really needs to be cleaned up because all I saw in the entrance way was dust. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because I do have some really great memories of this place. read more

The traditional fare here is not your normal stuff...... They have classics like Boxty (which was AMAZING) as well as a host of other things not normally found this side o'the pond. The service was amazing the last time I was there, and unless you have an allergy to nuts, the dessert menu is as perfect as the meals. My all time FAVORITE bar! Brian is an amazing bartender. He really gets to know his customers and cares about what he seems to do. I have only been coming to this bar a few times and he already knows me by name and drink. LOL. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR DINNER!!!! Visited on Sunday late afternoon. I have heard so many good things about this restaurant that my hubby and I decided to give it a chance. It was a beautiful day but we opted to sit inside- well lets be honest the hostess didnt give us a choice, or who was that person sitting inside doing nothing at the podium as you enter? We were seated and waited, and waited for someone to at least take our drink order. The waitress, Alex, well lets just say she either had a long hard night before or she really doesnt belong in the service industry, didnt seem too pleased to be serving that day. Niether of us have ever had "authentic" Irish food and we told the waitress that. Did she explain the menu? Are you kidding me?? Of course she couldnt be bothered. Our food was terrrible. The appetizer was the best thing about this place. I read reviews about how authentic and delicious their irish food was but uggh- I dont think I would feed it to a dog. Alex our waitress came back to the table maybe 1x, and seemed annoyed that we asked for refills for our non-alcholic drinks. We ended up boxing our own leftovers (to give to the neighbors dog) and when the waitress came by and saw us doing that she promptly turned away thinking we didn's see her. I had to flag her down for the bill. If for some silly reason you go there and get Alex - do yourself a favor and ask for another waitress or be moved to another section! We were so disappointed, our beautiful Sunday was ruined by Dick O Dows lousy food and lousy service! . read more

The food and the service was awful, I will never go back. After i complained that a panhandler was going from table to table, asking for my money as I am trying to enjoy my evening, the waitress started to ignore us. We ordered some sweet potatoe waffle fries for $8. They came in tiny little 1/2 pieces with just a few larger sizes in the basket. I think we we had two or three actuall "waffle fries". It looked like they cleaned out the fryer and served us the waste.The waitress was rude, the manager did not help out the situation, however she offered to remove $1.60 off our $31.60 bill. The menu is not the same as the pictures on this website, many of the items have been removed, like the Irish nachos and the Calmari. I was very very disappointed with how poor this place has became. Just a terrible experience. Worst food and service I have had in a while. My grilfriend got sick after eating their food. Two Thumbs down. read more

I've always wanted to try this place and finally did today. Nothing special, really. Typical fare, nothing that I can't find anywhere else. Service was lacking and it was very quiet when were there. Our waiter never came back with drink refill offers or anything. There is nothing special about this place that would ever make me want to go back. Loved the interior design! Very old-world styled. The atmosphere was great too! We shared the Ahi tuna app, and then I had the black and bleu salad and he had the ribs. I tired one of the ribs and they were fantastic! My salad was very good as well. The tuna app was good, but I'm not sure we would get it again. The sesame ginger dipping sauce just didn't really appeal to me, but the tuna itself was very good. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend checking it out. read more

It's essentially a glorified dive bar because it's the only Irish pub in the area. I've been here over 26 times and each time the quality is diminished. The food is good. The service is decent, except for the part where they steal your change. I've been going here for a long time and every time I dine out on their summer "patio," the waitstaff always (always) short changes me when I pay cash. I called the manager/owner about this and he said something about, "Most people leave the change as part of the tip anyway, soo..." So there you go. Short change all of your cash paying customers and over the course of a week (months, years?) that adds up to some pretty nice "coin." read more
