If your first experience with Dick's was while you were broke and needed something cheap to eat, you probably still feel grateful to them, enough that your fond memories fill in the taste that these small, mass produced, tasteless burgers desperately need. Dick's is one of those mystical places that outsider's don't get. And even though I've lived in the Seattle area for 31 of my 50 years, I still don't get it. I've wanted to. I've tried to, but every time I go there, open minded and open hearted, I still wind up disappointed. After all, I've seen these burgers before at the bottom of the menu at Mc-King-in-a-Box all my life, and I stopped eating them when I was old enough to order real burgers. But, today, I was near the new Dicks in Edmonds, and I thought I'd give it one more try. There were about 300 people standing in line (I'm not even exaggerating. I've got pictures to prove it. I waited over 40 minutes to get to the front of the line I was in, and then it dawned on me: Everyone was paying in cash! Was this one of those rare places that are cash only? I scanned the windows. No signs. Nothing. No credit/debit card signs, and no "Cash Only" signs. I supposed that real Dick's follower's would know that they only took cash. I grabbed my phone and came to Yelp for the answer, and I quote: "Cash only, NOOB!" Luckily, I found $3 in my wallet. At least I wouldn't suffer the indignity of being turned away. I bought the only thing I could afford: A cheeseburger with onions and ketchup, $1.50 plus 5 cent each for the condiments, and a milk, $1.25. I could have bought the Deluxe burger, (and no milk) but it comes with diced pickles, and this is not a place that will hold anything. You don't get it your way at Dick's. So, all in all, the Dick's on 220th in Edmonds is just like every other Dick's. If you're one of the faithful, you'll love it. If you're a rational adult, stay away. read more

I was really hyped up for this place but when I got here the line took 10 minutes. When I finally got to order I asked for a cheeseburger with lettuce. They responded by saying that they couldn't make special orders. So I asked for a plain cheese burger. I received a cheeseburger burger with ketchup even when THE WRAPPER SAID PLAIN! When one goes to Seattle Dick's Drive In is suggested as a must try. Dick's may be a staple burger in the area but I didn't find it all that special. Prices are very reasonable and the food is ok. The burger comes off only slightly better than it's big chain fast food counter parts. The fries was ok though a bit soggy and the ice cream was good though the inside of my cone was just air. All in all you get what you pay for and the burger has a unique sauce. read more

So, we tried another "You HAVE to try it - it's a local legend!" place. Sorry folks, and I'm prepared for the flak this might bring, but, I just don't get the hype over this joint. The lines were long, backing up into the parking lot, and slow moving. After 15 minutes, we finally made it to the window to order one of each burger plus fries and a vanilla shake. Granted, the shake was good, and the prices aren't bad, but then, they shouldn't be. Little thin hidden patties of meat that didn't begin even bothering to attempt to cover the bottom of the bun, unremarkable cheese, and the Special and the Deluxe both had more tartar sauce than I'd use on a fish sandwich. The plain burger had a dollop of ketchup and a single drop of mustard which seemed pointless. (Is plain yellow mustard That expensive?) The beef may be fresh, but definitely didn't blow us away flavor wise, especially as they were overpowered by the bun. The fries were limp and soggy greasy, but I have had worse, I guess. I suspect it's probably much better for a late night after the bars burger run, but then that's when dive diners taste best, too, so ... eh, a solid 2 "Meh. I've experienced better." If we're hungry, and next to one, and it doesn't have long lines of people standing around in the cold, we might try it again, but it's definitely not a first, second, or third "let's grab some burgers" option for us. On the plus side, I do like their community involvement, charity giving, and employee commitment concept so gotta give them some props for that. read more

Being new to the area, we were anxious to try the icon of burgers we'd heard so much about. What a disappointment!! Not even for a drunken binge at 2am would I stop in Dick's. I'm not sure what the filler is in their burgers but frying up an oatmeal patty would have more flavor. They don't do any special orders... fine. But can't even put out a plain burger???? I stopped by one rainy Seattle evening wanting to try this place out, and when I asked for no pickle, they said no special orders. They only make them one way. I will never understand the loyalty and reputation Dick's burgers has established in the Seattle area. Perhaps there was a time when they deserved this loyalty but Dick's just doesn't live up to the hype anymore. I've always thought Dick's was overrated, but I still drop in because hey, it's better than Micky D's in a pinch, right? Not anymore! Yuck! I get it. People have fond memories of this local chain but c'mon, people, don't let your sentiments override your objectivity. It's time to admit The Emperor has no clothes and stop worshiping this WAYYYYY over rated fast food place. They are fast and the burgers are cheap but tiny. Even if you eat it in the parking lot they are luke warm at best. The lettuce is wilted and tastes of sulfites. You can get them with or without the gelatinous cheese-colored product. I don't like the "cheese" as I find it coats my mouth with artificialness that even a drink of pop won't wash away. The salty fries are also usually cold and soggy and greasy. Don't get me wrong, I can love me some greasy burger and fries if they taste good and are served hot but this slop is a congealed heap that I would only recommend if you are very drunk or very hung over. I don't understand why this place has such a cult following. The macho way to order is "Two Deluxe, fries, and chocolate shake." You will forget all notions that a good burger meal is In-n-Out, Fatburger, Mos Burger, or White Castle. No, those are not really. Well, maybe In-n-Out... but it's their fries! With Dick's, it's the whole package, babe. The orange-foil wrapped Deluxe should be enshrined in Washington State's Hall of Fame Icons. It's like Pavlov's dog whenever I see that shiny orange reflection shaped over a burger. My mouth starts watering and my coronary blood pipes start contracting. It's that combination of two beef patties, mustard/mayo/relish, not-of-this-world-orange contorted cheese, soggy strips of lettuce, and limp bun that creates that a chemical reaction ending with that unique aroma that can only be summed up as "Oh, Dick's Deluxe!" If you like soggy, amped-up fries, then this is fry-nirvana for you. Whereas, In-n-Out has those perky stiff, almost-white fries, and McDonald's has those Simplot-Idaho salty stiffies, this is the antithesis of corporate French fries. I know Dick's is kind of a local institution and good cheap eats but I am not a fan of their sauce on their burgers - far too sweet. I don't want sweet when I eat a burger, I want savory. The fries may be hand cut but the batch we got at lunch time were overcooked and limp. Neither of us finished our burger, so the good thing is we didn't throw away a bunch of money on our meal. Service was fine but the people taking orders and bagging the food up seemed a bit flustered. I really have never been a fan of Dicks burgers. And that opinion hasn't changed. However, it's nice that there is a Dicks up in the north end for all those people who do love it. We came by around 10:30p last night and there was still a ridiculous line. However, the staff was working really hard and got through that line really fast. Dicks is the quintessential old fashioned burger stand in Seattle. A huge tradition going back to the 1960's for my mother - and passed down to three generations! The best burgers by far in town (and hand cut fries - nothing frozen here) and homemade tartar sauce and burger sauce (secret squirrel). Since it opened, this location has been CRAZY busy. I waited until the huge lines wore off and finally got my fix a few weeks ago. Waited less than 5 minutes in line. The fries here are far superior to other locations. Not sure what the difference is, but these are delicious, whereas a few of the other locations seem to cook them to the point of crunchy, overdoneness. Everything else is spot on in comparison with other locations - meaning it is mmm mmm good! As all locations, this Dick's is cash only, but they DO have an ATM if you really need it. The newest dicks and it's still delicious as always. I will always be a fan of Dicks burgers. I was so happy to see the north end win in getting a new Dick's. I guess the best part about this location is that it is only about a mile and a half away from me which can be dangerous sometimes, especially after a night of drinking and I get a craving for some yummy Dick's. I couldn't believe the turn out for the grand opening. I tried coming here at 8pm that night and the parking lot was packed like a can of sardines with cops everywhere. I have not seen that many cops in one area at once as I did that night. The wait alone was over an hour so i said screw it I will try again another day. I never realized how many Dick's lovers are out there. LOL. I am proud to say I am one of those people. Just keep one thing in mind when coming here, I know a lot of people have mentioned it already, bring cash because it is cash only. I've lived in Southern California all my life and moved up to Washington last summer. I LOVE In n Out so when I tried out Dick's burgers I thought it was ok. It actually made me miss In n Out a lot more than I did originally. The only unique thing about their burgers is that they have this secret sauce that makes it taste pretty good. The fries are good. They use fresh potatoes which is a plus. Their shakes are good. It's cash only but they have an ATM there so it helps for people that only carry cards. Overall, it's an ok burger spot for burgers and fries. And now that there's a location in Edmonds, it's easier to grab a burger from Dick's instead of driving all the way to Seattle. read more

I had my very first hamburger ever in 1960 at a Dick's in Seattle when my family immigrated here from the Dutch East Indies via the Netherlands. I last ate at Dick's in the early 70's before I left for the Navy. Now, over 34 years later I found the new Dick's in Edmonds while visiting family for the holidays. I had to stop in. The line wasn't too bad, only a little over 5 minutes until I got to the window. Once ordered, the wait to fill it was not long at all. I went for my traditional Deluxe with fries and a vanilla shake. The price was reasonable. It was just as good as I remember. Just a great simple burger that you can hold in one hand and you can easily get your mouth on. Not like some of the big chain burgers that will give you a carb overload because all the bread. My only issue is that I am heading back to Colorado and I can't take Dick's with me. I'm hoping it won't be another 34 years until I get my next fill. read more
