The fire arms department is always well staffed, there is always someone there to answer any questions... The football gear was staffed, and I had help the entire time I was there... I will agree with the other reviews about the shoe department, there is literally nobody there to help... but it is kind of self serve.. the available merchandise is located under the displays.. But then someone came by and helped us after awhile, helped my son with a proper fitting of his first time cleats... I don't know... everyone seemed really friendly and helpful... I tried to buy running shoes and I asked one of the employees (I believe his name was Ken) to check in the back for a size. He was extremely short with me and it felt like I was inconveniencing him. He came back out of the back calling my shoe name that I asked about, did not wait for a response, and then went back to the stock room. After waiting 10 minutes, not seeing another worker, I left. I needed a rain jacket for a football game at Qualcomm stadium. Other stores were sold out of them, but I found two here. Both were on clearance! And they let me use a recently expired coupon. First time here and I did NOT want to leave! It's like being in a man's toy store! What makes Dick's any different than my true love Sports Authority and my occasional fling, Sports Chalet? Up front, I believe they have the best running shoe selection of the bunch and when I was looking for sizes in Nike and Under Armor sections, they were good to go. It always seems like the Sports Authority that I'm used to in Mission Valley seems picked over. Sports Chalet seems a little more expensive. I guess the real reason I took the time out to write a review that their customer service was great and I got a military discount. Brand new Dick's Sporting Goods store set to open across from the Valley View Casino Center in early October. They took over the old Ralph's Grocery store location and remodeled it. Dick's is a comprehensive full-service sports retailer and I am sure that they will meet with great success in their Midway District locale. I spoke with someone at the El Cajon Dick's and they said to look forward to a grand opening with lots of raffles, giveaways, autograph signings with athletes and free gift cards to the first customers lined up on opening day. I bought a knife yesterday to go camping and asked the lady if she could take it out of the packaging for me at the store. I took a quick look at the knife and it seemed like it would work for what I wanted it for. After playing around with it for a little bit I realized it was way too much and not what I needed. I went back to the store the next day to return the knife and got a little bit of a hassle from the counter. I know they were just doing their job, but I wasn't satisfied and wanted my money back. They called over a manager and she took care of my needs. She explained that she couldn't do that return, but I explained to her that I just wasn't happy with my product. So I drove 25 min to the store just to be told they cant order it because they don't have it. Its up setting because the sale associate assured me that they can order it and that I should go there in person so I can see which color way I want. Worst experience! read more

All Dick's are the same (that's what she said) but no, seriously, they are. There's nothing unique about this location, with the possible exception of the 2014 World Cup merch. This store loses a star right off the bat for the loser "clean air vehicle" parking spots near the entrance. Each spot had a ridiculous car in it - and none of them were any kind of clean. This lack of respect for Dick's, I find, is completely warranted. Another issue is the high price common to all locations. But in this store, it's not that there's a shortage of discounts - the prob is there's a size shortage. From what I saw, it was tough to find something that was smaller than a XXL. So, pretty much, if you're going to specialize in discount shirts for fat guys, just rename the store "Can't See Our Dick's." read more

When I called to ask about free weights, I had the most cordial reception from the person who answered the phone, as well as the person in the gym equipment department. In person, the staff was also incredibly helpful and professional. They didn't have the specific weight I needed, but offered to order it online for me and have it delivered. Ive had a few experiences with a bad piece of equipment i bought. I had an EZ-up from here that was expensive but low quality and kept ripping and bending at the frame joints. I took it back and the exchanged it no questions asked. The new one was also doing the same shit, but i lost my reciept. An employee there was more than helpful and gave me a new one and hooked me up with a free full coverage plan because of the drama. The staff has always been helpful and friendly. read more

I went there before the CV epidemic hit and they closed stores temporarily. I was looking for a particular set of women golf clubs. No help to be found in that department. When I finally did find someone in another dept., they pointed to the area where I should go. Staff seems very unhappy and unwilling to help customers out...they must make minimum wage with minimum hours. Not the way to treat your staff if you want professional and good customer service from them. I also checked out the prices on their clothing and merchandise and found everything to be way overpriced. Almost $30 for a simple t shirt...$27. I try to support local stores, but I won't be supporting or going to Dicks anymore. Prices are full retail and then some. They do match prices, but such a huge corporation should already have the lowest price. I also had a friend that bought an extended warranty on an mt bike from them, only to find that they made it very difficult and a big hassle before they would honor it. Don't purchase extended warranties without knowing exactly what they will honor. read more

Bring your lawyer and a magnifying glass So I went to Dicks over the weekend and saw a sale "But one get one free ALL clearance fishing line" the sign was sitting directly above the line that I bought and it was on clearance with a red tag and everything. I get my receipts emailed to me. I looked at the receipt and I was charged for both. So I print out the receipt and go in there, and they say that it was only for products whose sku ended in a 7. I go back to the display and I still read it as ALL because, silly me it says the word ALL. So I get an associate and they point out some micro text at the bottom which I still could not read even after the associate removed the sign from the display, I mean the type was even smaller than that of medical disclaimers. And yes the sign was still directly above the string I bought. SO dicks basically told me to go F myself so here I am. I consider myself lucky to find out about how sneaky they try to be on such a small item don't trust any sale or other promotion they have some type that while it may be too small to read they enforce it just the same. Guess its back to Big 5. They may be unorganized but they have never been shady. read more

Went in the store because ordering online on their website became frustrating when the coupons they offer fir signing up for their text or email literally don't work when ordering ANY major brand!! And the go into a store that doesn't staff enough knowledgeable people and it's basically self serve. Store was empty... The guy who finally wandered out was sloppily dressed, only brought out one option and told my kid to put the display shoe away for him. I can't even say bad service, there was no service. I waited 10 minutes for a fitting room and was finally helped by an employee that was on break. She found people with keys that didn't work for the fitting room and explained they just rekeyed them. I wanted to buy some sox but they're were no women's sox to be found except a couple at the end of a display and there was no one to ask. When I got to the register my item rang up the wrong price and she needed to call a manager. She explained how everyone was on lunch yet there were 3 employees discussing a $10 fishing license with someone. I almost gave up and left but after 10 min I was finally rung up. I was extremely disappointed at this sporting good store I wanted to spend a lot of money but unfortunately everything I looked at was out of stock meaning any large shirt that I wanted wasn't available. I was trying to get ready for a camping trip this weekend and they're camping section was sparse in clothing I even tried to buy a pair of hiking boots that of course didn't have my size, size 10. I was told at the register they could order online and have it to me in 8 to 10 days which what good does that do me. I hate to be a Debbie downer but I was just disappointed not to mention I had to track people down in opposite ends of the store to come help me in each department I was looking in. I've been shopping here for years but lately the past 2 years or so , this location has a horrible worker in the shoe department. Every time I come in which is weekly I get stuck with him being the only worker in the area. And he's so unpleasant, little jerky comments and he does something odd every time he brings out the shoes. He rips all the inside soles out of them before handing them to you. As a new Lyft driver I wandered into Dicks a few days ago in search of pepper spray, you know, just in case! To save time I asked the young woman near the glass counter where I could locate such a thing. I'm so sad I didn't catch her name but I know she was management/ and or floor lead of sorts! She walked me back to where I would find the pepper spray. In addition she suggested possibly carrying a small knife. Good idea! We walked over to that section and were met by a gentleman named Cameron. They both gave me a ton of incite into small knives, what's legal etc. I didn't end up purchasing a knife that day, however I left the store with more knowledge of knives/ self defense than I did upon entering! Worst customer service ever. The cashier who was blonde I believe and seemed to be in his late 20s/early 30s was extremely rude. He asked if I wanted a bag and I said yes and he never gave me the bag. I asked for one and he acted like it was so hard to get one and acted as if I had never asked for one. Then when I was leaving he made a rude comment as I left I don't know why I shop her anymore. Took my child here to purchase some golf balls, since Sport Chalet is gone. We had a Dick's Sporting Goods flyer coupon for $10 off $25 or more. Well, we picked out a box of TaylorMade that were $26.99, passing up other boxes because they lacked signage (prices). After waiting in a ridiculously non-moving line (finally, someone opened a third and then a fourth register), there was a nice young man who tried to ring our purchase and apply the coupon. Coupon wouldn't work. He asked the young woman next to him to help and she couldn't get it to work either. Then she tells me it's because of the brand; certain brands are not eligible for the coupons. I looked at her and told her that such a statement is not printed anywhere on the coupon. (Also, there's no signs anywhere in the store indicating certain items are not eligible for the coupons they mail out.) She actually argued with me that I was incorrect! I also asked if they would be having any good specials this weekend - neither of them were willing to say. I was so irritated with these dolts, we left the purchase at the counter and walked out. Don't be stupid; I work in retail, too. You can tell someone that you're not allowed to say what might be on special. You can also call a manager over and have them override a coupon. Guess what? My family is never shopping here again. I actually was so appalled by this situation that I had to log into Yelp to post this review. Don't believe me? To the guy working in outdoor sports 10/1/16 at 3:48! YOU HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! Today I called looking for 2 paddle board paddles. You had none. In fact you didn't even want to look cause you and I quote "vaguely remember someone buying the last one yesterday" but I insisted you double check. And you got off the phone for like 2 seconds and "looked". I asked you a total of three times if there was a way to look into your system and let me know the closest location that would have them in stock. And THREE times you came up with bullsh*t excuses of why you would be the ONLY location with water sports. You said that it's fall now and NO location would have them. Then you gave me a bullsh*t response that San Diego is year round water sports so good luck finding one. In fact before looking into your system to find a Dicks location you suggested I go to a competitor. Well I called the next closest location in El Cajon. And guess what..... they have FIVE! AND in TWO colors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You spent more time pissing me off and making excuses not to do your job then it would to just look. Work on your resume this week buddy! read more

Came in here looking for women's workout clothes. My assumption is the Calia line, Lucy, etc is an attempt to compete with specially stores like lulu or athleta. To do that, you've to offer a certain level of service. Could not find anyone to help in the middle of the day, then when I asked for a crew neck workout shirt, woman that had been tracked down showed me a v neck, said "most people don't care what they are wearing when they work out" and ... That was it. Okkkay. Got it. Ladies ... Go to athleta, Lucy, Lorna Jane, road runner... Pretty much anywhere else if you are looking for any type of recommendation. Oct 17 update ... this store! Employees walk right by you look you in the eye and never offer help. It is impossible to get a dressing room and if you go up to the front to ask, they just look at you and say we didn't hear it. If you walk around the store at any time, it is impossible to find anyone to help you. All the employees congregate who knows where but it's not on the floor helping customers. read more
