I almost want to keep this a secret so it won't be hard to schedule in a time to bring in my kayak whenever I need something fixed or modified - but this shop is too awesome to not give a great review. First of all this shop specializes in Hobies and I happen to have an Old Town Sportsman AP kayak and I was having the hardest time finding anybody in the area that works on Old Towns. Well I got super lucky and found this place- they were so accommodating and Callen is amazing! He helped me replace my rudder cable that was fraying and also installed my livescope for me. I purchased a used Pro Angler 14 from a 3rd party, and Fastlane been amazing helping me get it seaworthy again. I had them tune up my old V2 Mirage Drive. I have brought my Hobie to Fast Lane for a couple of warranty issues and they took care of me and kept me promptly updated. I cannot say enough about how great their service is and Ava is AMAZING! Hands down they are the best Hobie dealer in all of California (if not the entire US). I was interested in a Hobie Lynx and I got a call from my bro saying that they were on sale at Fastlane. I called over there to get some information and Debbie answered and she was so pleasant and answered all my questions. I told her I was busy and could not make it over there to check out the Lynx that was on sale. She offered to reserve one for a small deposit which I took advantage of. I was able to go over to Fastlane and take a look at the kayak. While walking up I met Callen and Dillon they were out front and greeted me. Super cool guys. Went inside and was greeted by Ava she was very nice and helped me out and showed me the kayak. There was no pressure to make a sale. I was sold on the Kayak and paid for it. I told Ava I could not take it with me and would come back in a couple days. And she was ok with that. When I did returned to pick up the kayak again they were all so nice and helpful. Callen demonstrated how everything worked on the kayak in detail which was extremely helpful. During that visit, I also had the pleasure of meeting Ron. We swapped some fishing stories and he gave me some fishing tips which I appreciated. I have been back to buy some accessories and again they were so helpful. I had a question about one accessory and Ron helped me out. He then took me outside to demonstrate on his Lynx. Again very helpful. I don't write many of these reviews. While shopping for a kayak I visited fast lane a few times before I ended up buying used. One day while on the water in the middle of SD Bay my rudder line snapped. I brought it to fast lane because the cost of a line kit plus the time, frustration, and lack of confidence in my repair didn't seem worth it, so I let the pros at fast lane take care of it. Ava was super nice on the phone and said she'd call me with a time I could come by. She called back immediately, got my kayak in, and completed it in a few hours. Top notch shop with almost every Hobie accessory in stock. Yeah, I'm a Hobie fan boy, but why not? They are the best in the business. ***Reviewed During Covid*** So I literally just left this place and it has probably been one of the worse experiences I have ever had in my life. Coming from a background in customer service, hospitality and the food industry, I got a bunch of red signs just walking in. Let me start from the start. My friend and I were in La Jolla and we discussed getting me a car rack and kayak for my birthday. We stopped and talked to a guy who had just had his done by the folks here and so we decided to check it out. We came in and the first red flag was when Debbie Lane came up to my friend and I and asked if she should wear a mask when helping us! Uhh YES!!! No one wants whatever you might be carrying and it's still a San Diego ordnance to be wearing a face mask! Debbie and another other guy working there were both not wearing ANY KIND OF FACE MASK OR COVERING while helping people on the sales floor. The second red flag came when we were just wanting to inquire about pricing, asking questions and just getting an over all feel for everything and the next thing Debbie said to my friend and I was "oh yeah, but I mean you can't get anything because we are all sold out of everything." We understood that but Debbie being the entitled white person she was couldn't understand our statement when we informed her that we just wanted to see pricing information, have some general questions answered and inquire about car racks. She was so quick to shoot us down because we probably looked like we didn't have any money. The entire team here is A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!! Debbie was the WORSE PERSON TO GO TO FOR ANY KIND OF INFORMATION!! I highly recommend staying at away from this place. They only see Hobies. Having done my research and knowing a lot of kayak fishing, it felt so great having Debbie talk down to my friend and I. "Salty Crew" - I finally asked a coworker who was wearing a shirt with a very popular, two fish hook logo, "So, what is Salty Crew?..." In short he said something along the lines of it's just a new brand. I had no idea so who was I to argue? In hindsight, he didn't have a clue. About a week after that, I went on a sailing trip to San Diego with some friends and got my answer from the birthplace of Salty Crew. It was right here @ Fastlane Sailing & Kayaking. Curious on how things seem to present themselves. What's the saying; "Ask and you shall receive?" (I'm still waiting on the winning lotto numbers; patience is a virtue. - HA!) Salty Crew isn't "just a brand," it's actually an acronym a way of living - "it is a movement to get back to the beach. Their goal is to bring surfing back to the ocean and encourage young people to go out on the water and enjoy all it has to offer. Salvaging A Lifestyle for Tomorrow's Youth, S-A-L-T-Y." During the last week of October, I sailed down to Mission Bay with two other boats out of Dana Point. (If you're familiar with sailing & wind patterns that translates to "we motored all the way to Mission Bay.") We left DP Harbor on a Friday @ 0630 hrs & were anchored by 1530 hrs. Aboard the charter, "Zephyr," a 34' Hunter was Pierre M & Bruce S. The next day, Bruce mentioned he had o'hana who had a shop in the adjacent harbor & asked if I wanted to come him. I didn't have anything planned during the day so I did. We ended up @ Fastlane Sailing & Kayaking. On the way over to the shop, Bruce bumped into a few guys a couple of doors down exiting another store. He introduced me to them; really cool group. I had noticed that they were all wearing Salty Crew t-shirts. I thought it was interesting but didn't think too much about it BUT what I did notice was that one of the designs was not the typical Salty Crew logo with the fish hooks. It was a nice illustration of a fish around some coral. My o'hana is from Hale'iwa, the North Shore of O'ahu & the local attire is t-shirt, shorts, and of course, "slippahs." (For you mainland folks, you would know them as flip flops.) The locals love their t-shirts. Oh, and hats too! I'm always looking @ different designs, I have an art background from freelancing to WB Studios. I've been working on a couple of my own shirt/brand ideas and the beginnings of Salty Crew struck a chord with me. It's one of those great success stories and they're still growing. (Thumbs up) Apologies, I digress; fast forward a few minutes later & we're standing on the showroom floor of Fastlane. I'd have to say, they do have some pretty awesome kayak set ups; from the basic to a slick looking trimaran with all the bells & whistles. It also had a spot for Fido to cruise on the water with you as well. (HAPA, my bully-pit likes the water as long as it's from the shore. I'm hoping to get the dog on a SUP once I lear to stay on one. HA!) Bruce walked in & was immediately greeted by Debbie who was shortly doing by husband, Ron. Bruce introduced me & the three started talking story. So, as he caught up with the family, I took the time to browse the cool toys, snap a few photos for yelp*, and eventually ended up in a corner area where it was ALL THINGS, Salty Crew... 'Hmmm, this is interesting. There were hats, jackets, shirts, more shirts, very cool swag. I walked over to the counter & inquired about the Salty Crew spot in the store. That is when I learned that is where it all started. I laughed because a week prior I was just asking a coworker about the brand since I've been seeing it more frequently... 'And now, I'm standing in the place where it all began. - Who would've thunk it?! I'm not one to jump on trendy bandwagons but Salty Crew was something more. - "For the hard workers. The searchers. The risk taking, mistake making, watermen with nothing to prove. For the seafaring, the wax sharing, the grommets, young and old. For the tried and true, who've paid their dues, for those who Find Refuge in the Sea." (Source: Official Salty Crew website) 'And naturally, I picked up a few shirts; one for me and a couple gifts that I already shipped off to Hawai'i. Bruce ended up borrowing a racing SUP and spent a couple hours trying fo' teach me the basics of stand up paddle boarding; getting up on the board, staying up, & getting back on. Being a racing board made it all the more challenging but I had a good time nonetheless. One thing I learned is that I need more conditioning and next time get a board with a leash. Okay, make that TWO things I've learned. If I ever decide on getting a kayak, SUP, or the likes, I'd make the trip from Dana Point. I do not know when I will be making my way back down to Mission Bay but if I ever do, I will be sure to drop in to say hi. I also recently had a major failure with a piece of equipment and they were very helpful in processing a warranty claim. They ordered replacement parts which were available the next day. I first stopped in at Fast Lane about three years ago and checked out what was not just new in Kayaking but, cutting edge. I chatted with owner Ron about the newest trends in kayaking (they have it all) as well as fishing kayaks. I admit having kayaked only minimally I was overwhelmed with what they had to offer. Ron is a California cool guy. The kind of guy that seems to eat breathe and sleep all things water. So, after two or three more visits over the next year I was serious about owning one of these vessels for fishing and cruising the bay, ocean and lakes. On subsequent visits, I met and spoke with (questioned) son Hayden, daughter Allie, as well as his wife ?? From a simple stand point of upstanding, kind and thoughtful people, I would have never bought a Kayak from anyone else. As others have said, this is a fine and honest family that will treat you right. So, the time came for making my long awaited purchase. One year ago I bought my Hobie i11W/ many little options. I decided on the inflatable because I tow a 19' Airstream and I wanted a portable option that I wouldn't need a rack for. It very simply inflates in minutes and is a pleasure to use! My experience was unsatisfactory. I had gone in to the shop to get some rigging tips and mounting ideas for a transducer and left with no further understanding, other than "You should've bought a Hobie kayak.". The owner/"Dad" was an arrogent fool that could'nt believe I didnt spend the rediculous amount of money on a hobie kayak to begin with, and insisted that there was no practical way to mount my transducer on a generic kayak. He had an aftermarket product that he couldve talked me into buying but instead said his own product was trash. I will take my business elsewhere. 2 stars because the rest of the family was decent and tried to be helpful. read more
