I was not impressed. My wife and I went there for breakfast today and I was expecting much more than we received. We had the #1 and #2 breakfasts and substituted chicken fried steak for the meat. The eggs and hash browns were both under cooked. The chicken fried steak was decent but the gravy was bland and too floury. The pancakes while fluffy were extremely bland and also tasted like they were from a mix. For the prices that they charge, I would expect things like the gravy, pancakes and biscuits to be made from scratch. They all tasted like a mix. I was really expecting better. read more

Dick's Uptown Cafe has been a favorite of mine for years for breakfast and I've loved it. Recently looked at their lunch menu and talked to a staff member about it who said the burgers were fantastic. I went for the tuna melt and fries, absolutely great. Best fries ever too, plus sourdough bread! Have gotten that twice now but just saw a pic of their onion rings so next time will go for those! I gave it four stars this time as I'm a lone diner when I go there and enjoy reading the newspaper on my iPad. For some reason, they no longer have free WiFi. I do not abuse my stay, I read as I wait for food and eat, I don't just sit and drink endless coffee to read. Who switches from free WiFi these days? Very inconvenient for me, so I've really cut back on my visits, I used to go very often and now I sure enjoy lunch too. Give us lone diners a break please! Please reconsider this, perhaps someone was abusing it but I hate to see this ruined for us all. I'm a Cedar Hill resident and this ia fave place for me, I hate to see that change! Thanks to Teril & Dick and their wonderful staff for good food at reasonable prices. UPDATE: Teril was nice enough to respond that free WiFi will once again be available, YAY! Free Wifi! Nice for a breakfast place. I also love supporting local business. Clean, friendly & bright and the owners greeted me and gave me the drill-cue up, order, pay & sit and your food will come out to you. A great place for a quick coffee clutch for hungry sales reps! I ended up with an egg beater/turkey sausage burrito. The various "messes" look awesome but I can't handle that much this morning. The line to order moved pretty quickly. Was able to find a table and food came quicker than I expected. The food was really good. My kids loved the hot chocolate and French toast. The pancakes were really good and there was something really good about the syrup too. I had the original message and loved it, it's kind of like a scramble. Couldn't finish it, had to get a to go box. I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast but probably not for a party with more than 4 people because seating could be a challenge. read more

Just had the worst breakfast. In the past Dick's had been good, but something has changed. I ordered two #1s with a side of grits on both. The grits were GRAINY!!! UNCOOKED!!!! I believe they use some kind of instant or quick grits, but still didn't cook them long enough. How do you serve someone that with a straight face. They had to know they were not cooked. Being from the south, I was raised on grits and know how they should be when cooked correctly. I also mix my scrambled eggs in my grits. Had the cafe deli sandwich. Nothing special. Could've done this at home. I had a poor experience with the cashier. I asked her what other dressing do you have besides mustard and mayonnaise. She said "like what?" I said "do you have vinaigrette?" She said "we have red wine vinegar and oil." I said "perfect."She rudely turned her nose up at me as if that was a disgusting request. Umm news flash lady your in the freaking restaurant business! Your supposed to have great customer service. It's not your business to judge what I want on my sandwich. I'm not the biggest fan of breakfast knowing its the most important meal of the day. But I really enjoyed my Denver omelet. It was simple, straight to the point. No bells, whistles or fireworks on my plate. Traditional american breakfast. I should've taken a pic before I dove in but it smelled so good I couldn't resist. The staff was really nice. This little café has fed me and my family for two years now. The food is always incredible, and we have never had any issues whatsoever. The staff there have always been excellent, and the food is always been piping hot. The family that runs his business are incredibly polite and they actually listen to their customers. I would recommend this place for breakfast or for lunch anytime. My family and I absolutely love this place, in our opinion it is easily the best breakfast restaurant in Cedar Hill. read more

Foods good. Online ordering system could be much better as you have to add items seperatly and go to too many different pages to complete your order. For example you cant just add a pancake to your "mess"order you have to go back to the pancake page to do this...should just be a box below that you can just check to minimize confusion. Also its really busy so the frantic commotion can make it seem like they are being rude (maybe just forward though) but probably just overwhelmed at busier times...but its off putting. read more

They recently changed owners and overall it seems to be for the worst. They changed the menu removing a lot of options, the changed the way you order making the waits longer, they changed the way you get drinks so you're not able to drink as much, they changed a lot of servers who have no little idea how to maintain the aesthetic and seem understaffed in how they implement the new chages. They also changed how you pay, in a dumb way, as it would cause people to linger in their seats for longer making the place crowded. read more

This place is amazingly delicious! We had a group of nine on New Year's Day hungry for breakfast and headed over. I had never been there, so I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! We were lucky enough to beat the late morning rush and the hostess helped get us all seated quickly. After ordering at the counter, I watched her expedite the meals quickly to our table so nothing sat in the window too long and was served hot. I had the banana bread French toast and it was delicious! Between our nine people, everyone had something different from the menu - pancakes, waffles, the big mess or whatever it was called. Everyone was extremely happy with the food. The excellent food and service will have me coming back here! Still dreaming about that banana bread French toast.... :-) read more

Absolutely one of the most delightful restaurants to open in the area in recent years. It's a great to have a new local business in the age of fast food/chain restaurants overrunning small town America. The food is always consistently cooked and the portion size is reasonable for what you order. We've tried a few different dishes there over the past year and have enjoyed each one. The Whole Mess is delicious and so is the Reuben. Yum! The only complaint I have is that they aren't open all the time. ; ) How great would it be to be able to order breakfast for dinner?! Worse breakfast place ever. Seriously, how hard is it to fry an egg. My boyfriend and I went for brunch last weekend. He ordered the #2. He asked for eggs over medium with French Toast and Bacon. His eggs were slimy at best. The white part looked like someone sneezed on his plate. The bacon was part burned and part raw. I'm not sure HOW they managed that. I don't really care for breakfast food so I had the chicken friend chicken with mashed potatoes. It was ok-ish. I wouldn't really go out of my way to write home about it. They crust was lacking and the potatoes needed some serious TLC. Lesson learned, we will not be back. read more

Somewhat small but very clean and inviting. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. We arrived slightly before 11am, just before an influx of traffic. The food was excellent as well as the presentation and arrived quickly. We both ordered different variations of "The Mess" entrée; YUM!! Only downside is this, upon entering you take a menu and stand in a line to place your order. So, if you're unfamiliar with the menu, it may take you a few minutes to review it to decide what you want. Thereby, allowing other guest to move ahead of you as not to hold up the line. Upon placing your order, the staff is very patient and extremely helpful in answering any questions about the menu. After you've placed your order, beverages and silverware are on a self serve basis. Overall the process in of itself was smooth but if you're caught in a wave of traffic, I'm not so sure how well the flow will move. As we were leaving, the line was literally out of the door. So pack your patience but it was worth it and we'll return again. read more
