i encountered dick at davich. the doc lives up to his name. i had an old prescription, touche. but i wanted to get in and out quickly after a long work day. after speaking to one of his techs and telling me they couldn't fill a prescription i already had because i didn't take a picture of the signature of the previous optometrist, dr. chen silently moseys on out and sits at the tech's desk without a word. i started speaking to him in korean because i had always known davich as a korean business and had been there a few times over the years for various optical needs. to which he replies he's chinese, but his wife is korean. whoop dee doo. he tells me he can do a quick check to see whether my prescription is outdated. fine. go do the assessment, he glances at my old lenses, and says my script is mild and that my eyesight has improved. sweet. i was about to say i'd do the new eye exam with him, but he proceeds to say "yeah, we ain't doing that shit without an exam." and he dismissively walks away from me. i'm not a prude (read my reviews), and i really don't care about coarse language or profanities with friends or people i have a rapport with, but you're saying that in a professional setting with a new potential patient/customer? yeah, it's 30 min before close and only an $80 eye exam, you're not going to lose any sleep over that, but i do have a few different frames i need renewed now, thanks to your assessment. will definitely not be doing exams with this tool of an optometrist or davich. Everyone here is nice. However, I did not have a good experience. I've been wearing contact lenses for 30 years. I bought a groupon and he claims I'm suddenly astigmatic when I've never been and tells me it's extra $$ for it, which I stupidly paid. It took a year of going back and forth for prescription. Finally found one that seemed right, but now that I ordered them and wearing them, they are horrible and I can barely see. When I called back about it, he told me I could come back and pay for another exam! Also his door is open and people are constantly walking in and out while you're having your exam. He kept forgetting what prescriptions I tried on and we were back to square one. I can not recommend him. read more

Went for a contact lens exam and had a great experience. In and out in about 30 min tops! I originally called for an appointment only to find out that you can just walk in at any time without one. The staff was super friendly and cheerful. There were two people before me so they motioned me over to the coffee/tea lounge area. Once it was my turn, Dr. Chen gave me his undivided attention to nail down the right prescription and the lens fit for me. He's hilarious too, loved his dry humor. After going to Costco and scheduling another optometry exam and realizing it was going to cost an exorbitant amount I decided to visit Davich Optometry on Vermont. He gladly honored my Groupon and recommended a better, crisper prescription for me. Decent amount of parking for Los Angeles. Best eye doctor visit I've ever had! Dr. Chen & the entire office are super nice. I went in without an appointment for a contact & eye glasses exam, and Dr. Chen saw me almost right away. When I arrived, I was greeted by the very personable staff, and everything was very quick. I was in and out within 30 minutes. Dr. Chen is very friendly. Came for a routine eye/contact exam for my updated prescription and Dr. Chen was great. I found him on groupon and the price was the best with no hidden fees. It's $80 for contact exam on groupon and in office is same price; other offices had $50-70 eye exam but wanted $80+ for contact exam on top which is crazy because most of us already have a contacts brand we know we like. There was a wide open space to maintain social distancing and the wait was not bad for walk in. I have been steadily going up in Rx strength for years now, last year was prescribed -4.75 for both eyes. Dr. Chen realized my left prescription was way too strong and said -3.5 or - 3.75 is correct. I was skeptical because my last 3 doctors over 3 years have prescribed higher than that. But he was right because when I wore the sample -3.5 and -3.75, I could see much more clearly than the -4.75. I had complained about blurriness when reading faraway text when I came in but assumed my eyes had just gotten worse again. I am baffled at how my previous docs made this big of a mistake. We weren't sure on -3.5 or -3.75 based on the sample contacts but I left with -3.5. When I messaged him asking him to change my Rx to -3.75 he quickly updated it. He let me know other services they offered but wasn't pushy at all when I declined. Whole process was very easy and hassle free. This is a review for Dr. Chen, who sometimes rents space at Vision One Optometry. My appointment was made and then confirmed three times via text messages, directly with the doctor. On the day of the appointment, the doctor rescheduled (via text messages) over four times and then kept me waiting for over an hour because of his long commute from another office and it was drizzling that day. I know this is Los Angeles and nobody knows how to drive in the rain, but I'm a working professional too and I deserve to have my schedule respected as well, especially when I rearranged my day for my appointment, and that included leaving enough time to drive in the misty weather. Throughout the whole wait, the rest of the office staff made small talk amongst themselves, complained about the doctors and the weather. Another doctor (Dr. Nicholson, the permanent doctor who owns the place and rents to Dr. Chen) was angrily commenting about the staff and the other doctors. No offers for water, no updates about the schedule. When Dr. Chen finally arrived, he checked in multiple waiting patients at a time. How exactly was he going to conduct multiple simultaneous eye exams? At the start of my exam, the doctor thought it would be appropriate chit-chat to get to know a new patient by talking about how great Donald Trump would be for President because immigrants are a real concern. He rushed through the exam and then walked me out to shop for eyeglass frames by myself. Again, no help from the rest of the staff. After waiting almost another hour, the doctor finally sat back down with me to fill out the order. Glasses were ready about three weeks later, and I went to pick them up and once again, what should have been a rather simple transaction took almost two hours. The entire staff was out at lunch at the same time, the permanent doctor was audibly annoyed about this, staff finally came back to give me my glasses, rushed through the fitting, and didn't even offer a cleaning cloth or case (I got a case after asking for one). Eye exam, eyeglass shopping, eyeglass fitting and purchase = total of about 5 hours of my time for nothing extraordinary, except the unbelievably bad attention to service. Bottom line: used an online discount voucher, but would never go back, even for no cost. read more

So, I read the reviews and some weren't so nice. Dr. Chen is like most of us, working to make a living, while taking care of his responsibilities. I used my Groupon, so when I get such a great deal, I expect to give a little grace understanding that most businesses on groupon are trying to grow. My eye insurance isn't the greatest so this deal was perfect for me. Dr. Chen is a genuinely kind man. He is working out of 2 offices Koreatown and Pasadena. We know that the traffic is a bear some time so running late is pretty normal. He actually operates off his cell phone so I text him to confirm the appointment and time we got there at the same time. Besides that I got a great contact lens exam, he helped me to understand the difference btwn, bifocal contacts and regular ones with out trying to up sell me. I have been going to Dr.Chen for a few years. Dr. Chen is very good at what he does! The eye exam for both glasses and contact lenses is very detailed and accurate. Dr. Chen doesn't let you leave without making sure you are definitely comfortable with the updated prescription. Added bonus: Glasses are ready within the hour or so unless you get the anti-blue coated lenses, which will take a few days. Some days/weekends may be busy so call ahead and plan accordingly to your schedule. read more

He only does this on the side, doesn't have normal set hours, his office is old and dirty, he's hard to get a hold of, cancelled my first appt (who does that?), only takes cash, takes forever to get you what you paid for, and did the bait and switch on me for my contacts. I specifically asked where were your afforadable frames as i was on a very tight budget and you could not even point out which frames were your least expensive ones or even showed any consideration of my budget. i hope you have learned from the feedback you have received on yelp. I hope you take into consideration of what is important to your customers rather than trying to make a sale with a big profit margin. The experience may or may not be better for your customers now, but i for sure can not ever refer anyone to you or give you another chance. For the eye exam, he did not do a poor job...just your normal exam of switching lenses to find the right prescription. He has no assistants, I have a feeling that he's a part timer at this location. I purchased a groupon for contact lenses, having never worn them before. I thought the office was nice and spacious (which threw me from a couple reviews I'd read). Dr. Chen saw me right away, and was very friendly, patient, and thorough with getting my prescription right and showing me how to put in and take out the lenses. I was super-hesitant to go here because of the bad reviews, but I had a very pleasant experience today with Dr. Chen. He was knowledgeable, patient, and answered all my questions. Before making an appointment, I took time to research his medical training, experiences and reviews about him and his practice. I like what I read and with no hesitation, I made an appointment. He was able to accommodate me to the time that is convenient for me. Yes, it is a one man show practice which I and most of us like. He was very patient and he took time addressing my numerous questions and concerns. After the extensive eye exam, I know I made the right choice.
