He fixed it well. Afterwards the heater works more efficiently but gets room too hot. When it first turns on it gets a good 6 degrees hotter than the thermostat said, and still does. He came back a couple times to look at it, and concluded that the heater is too big for this one bedroom condominium. So I couldn't do anything about that and that certainly isn't his fault. Dickson does water heaters also! Since we had that great experience with fixing the furnace, I thought to contact him when we needed to replace the gas water heater at my parents house in San Rafael. His crew did a great job with the copper water plumbing as well as the gas lines. A very fair estimate for the work. We ended up having them also replace the water heater at my grandmother's house in San Rafael. Then shortly thereafter, a family friend asked my parents for a recommendation since they needed to replace their water heater. Of the 3 quotes they got, they said it was just above the lowest quote, and 1/2 of the highest quote they received. Dan is amazing. Our furnace died after another heating company did a thermostat repair. Despite replacing an ignition part they couldn't get it going. Dan discovered that the furnace doors had been transposed, and once switched, the furnace functioned normally. In addition, he found that our elderly furnace would probably be good for another few years despite information from another company that it was in need of replacement. He's friendly and efficient. Wonderful! - Had major furnace repair co. visit (they advertise on TV every day), didn't fix it, said, "Pipes are clogged, maybe $2 - $3,000 to replace them." (Air pipes, thru the roof??) - Charged $289. I assume he believed it? But didn't make sense, furnace turned on every morning and ran 15' (with clogged pipes?), then wouldn't turn on 'til the next day. Then had Dickson furnace repair (owner?) visit, said my water tank's clogged. (No one knows furnaces have them, for evaporation?) Next day 2 workers, in 2 trucks arrived, emptied and cleaned the tank. Furnace is great. - Charged $307! (3 men, 2 visits) read more

Was really hoping to get a chance to work with these guys after all the positive reviews, but after 6 WEEKS, 3 failed scheduling attempts and a complete lack of communication and zero responsiveness I feel the need to let others be warned. Apparently our job wasn't high on their priority list. We had an estimate done over 6 weeks ago, scheduled the work for 2 weeks later, they never called back. Had to call several times to inquire. When I received a call back I was told maybe 1-2 weeks... 2 weeks came and went, no call (had to call them, again). When the owner Dan called me back he apologized and said 1-2 weeks again, but couldn't give me a definite time. This actually happened a second time after I spoke with Dan, AGAIN. Since calling them back to find out what happened I have yet to receive a return call... I'd be embarrassed if this is how I ran a company. read more

Another repair man had come out, examined our furnace, told us we needed an entire new gas valve, and that he would not do the job because our furnace was too old and he "wouldn't put his name on it". A second repair company quoted us $200 just to come out for a diagnosis, and we would have had to wait a week. Dan, from Dickson, was able to come promptly, had our furnace running in about ten minutes by replacing a thermocouple, and charged a reasonable price. Just got a very honest advice from Dan. I called him when my wall furnace stopped working. Pilot light works, main flame doesn't. I replaced thermostat and the thermophile generator, still no effect. I called Dan, and instead of getting there and charging me for the visit he explained me where the 'reset' button is, and suggested I press it. I pressed the button and that was it, furnace was operating again. I'm very impressed with Dan and his simple and honest answer. read more

The first job he did for me was to provide an absolutely quiet 300cfm hvac system for a world class commercial recording studio built to insane specifications.. I had a great experience with Dickson replacing my water heater. I also had tried two other companies in San Rafael. One of the other two sent me 10 PDF's, which I had no interest in reading and he never mentioned the code issues. The other one gave me an in person estimate and the the written estimate was $1,800 more with no explanation and he only mentioned 1 code issue. We actually had several code issues which Dickson pointed out and fixed for us at a reasonable cost. Plus they also covered an area around the furnace so it didn't get dust from the water heater replacement. Highly recommend them!! read more

I have been using Dan Dickson since 1999. He is the most honest and trustworthy guy in the business. I have used him for probably 60 heater inspections and referred him probably 20 clients who needed heater work or a new heater. Every one of those clients loved him. There are companies out there that just want to sell you a new heater but this guy will come in and tell you the truth if you really need a new heater or not. I call him the heater scientist because he knows so much about every kind of heater. He also loves teaching people about heaters and what they can do to keep them going longer. They moved our furnace and basically it went like this... they made an appointment to estimate the work which took less than an hour, they showed up when they said they would to start the project, they finished when they said they would and the final bill was less than the estimate.
