Crunchy Carne Tacos
Erik U.

Second year of stopping in for RI Food Fights 'Taco Mania!'". This year we had the Crunchy Carne Tacos and they were delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. Great atmosphere whether you choose to sit inside or out on the patio.

Victoria G.

I have mixed feelings about Diego's. It wasn't bad but wasn't knock your socks off. Came for RI food fights and had the hard shell ground beef tacos. The meat was juicy and flavorful, but the taco shells did not hold up well. As soon as you took one bite the whole taco would fall apart. The queso was also a bit heavy. I tried the cornbread soufflé as well and it was tasty but definitely soaked in butter.

Came here for the taco mania fest. I'd asked for the chili cod tacos but ended up getting the braised carne ones instead. The tacos were Aok. The mezcal passion fruit cocktail on the other hand was very good. I'd come here for the drinks, not so much for the food.

Birras Taco Plate ($25)

I live in Los Angeles for part of the year, so know that I am certainly not leaving 4 stars in comparison to LA Mexican food. Sorry, but even a taco truck in a Hoke Depot parking lot in LA is going to beat any New England Mexican restaurant. My 4 stars are about the overall experience and not actually saying this is 'authentic' in any way, shape or form. The hipster vibe here is strong and it looks like it could be a restaurant inside a Kimpton Hotel, or a modern chain hotel. It's dark-ish ... the skull theme is on overload ... the music that blasts is Sum-41 and vintage 90's punk music. There are lots of colors, marionette dolls in shadowboxes (covered in icky dust) and the host walks around with a Polaroid camera to put your photo on the wall, if you are good-looking. A little over the top on everything trendy ... but stops just before 'cloying'. Before we talk about the food, the prices must be addressed. These days, everything is so out of control I am never sure what is actually higher than normal. These prices seem to be a mixture. A street taco plate is $15, which seems okay ... the Bierra Taco plate is $25 ... a bit steep. Appetizers and drinks are what is going to sting here ... figure on $11 - $15 for an average mixed drink. $7 - $9 for most beers on draft, or in cans. (An ice cold can of Tecate is $5, which is on point.) Guacamole ... plan on taking out a mortgage for. The food was good. It wasn't anything like the Mexican food I have grown used to in LA. Things seemed fresh and tasty ... we had a basket of fried mushrooms, which were not seasoned and rather bland. The ranch-esque dipping sauce saved them. I had Bierras tacos. They were good ... 3 greasy, fried tacos with a slow-simmered beef filling. They oddly tasted a bit like a larger version of Trader Joe's mini-beef tacos. Certainly not health food ... certainly the perfect greasy drunk food. A little side of guacamole and sour cream would have been welcome. The side of bland, dry Mexican rice and bland refried black beans was terrible. The shrimp bowl special was good. 'Nothing special ... but not bad' is how it was described by the person who got it. The ingredients seemed fresh but just didn't really come together. It didn't seem like anything that Chipotle couldn't top. Overall, two entrees, one appetizer and one beer was $70. A bit high for Mexican food, based on what I am used to and we probably wouldn't come often as if we are going to drop darn near $100, there are better ways to do it. The industrial hipster decor is cool enough that it's fun to look around. I haven't found a single Mexican restaurant to write home about in Providence ... so this one is as good as any of the others you'll visit. We enjoyed our meal ... our server was great ... and there was nothing wrong with the food, so 4 stars as a restaurant, it is.

Came in for dinner with some girlfriends and it was great! They had a wonderful seasonal margarita that I had a few of! We split the street corn which you could get on or off the cob. It was very tasty! I had the shrimp tacos and the others both got the burria tacos and all were very good. For dessert we split the churros. They were ok. The decor is nice. The staff friendly. Overall a good night!

Mango tango mocktail

I have been to Diego's a number of times, and rarely been disappointed. They do a moderate amount of menu rotation, but my favorite entree has been the fried chicken. About a year ago we also had a group of 11 for my boyfriend's birthday party on the porch and they did a great job with it. It was decorated and we were able to put together a pre fix menu. They generally have indoor and outdoor seating and the indoor ambiance is very fun. The music is a little load for some (like my parents), and the decor is multi colored skull themed. They have a large seating area in the back as well, and while it can accommodate larger groups at long tables, it does feel a little disconnected from the rest of the restaurant. Depending on what you're going for that can be good or bad. Most recently I got a drink with my friend at the bar. I don't drink a lot of alcohol, but the Mango Tango mocktail I got was great. People who are fairly interested in tequila have also given their drink menu very positive reviews.

fried calamari

FOOD/DRINKS: Ordered the White Peach Sangria pitcher which serves around four glasses. Delicious. Loved it. For our appetizer, we ordered the fried calamari which was actually kind of spicy but really good. The main entrees I was disappointed in, especially in portion size. Two tacos for $16 .. barely kept me full. The taco fillings also fell out really easily. Wasn't impressed. For dessert, my friend and I shared a tres leches cake slice which was pretty good too. Not too soggy but just enough flavor. DECOR: The restaurant was dimmed with just enough light for each table. The decorations were cool, a vibe. I liked the open kitchen concept and the center bar. A good place to grab a drink or two with friends. There is also a fairly decent-sized lounge area to sit in while waiting for a table. SERVICE: It was a little busy when we arrived but we got seated within ten to fifteen minutes. Our hostess and server were really friendly. I appreciated it. OVERALL: Parking was also a little hard to find. Street parking fills up pretty quickly. I'd return only for their apps and drinks, I'll pass on the entrees.

A 5 star experience all around at Diegos. Everyone there was so genuinely friendly, especially our server Chris. The appetizer of the "crack fries"... amazing My smash burger tacos.... amazing The Mexican sundae & the churros... amazing Definitely a go to for Mexican food!

I love this place. Tonight was my 3rd trip there. Loaded mini tacos with smoked Tofu. Great to look at, a bit sparce on the loaded. The tofu was excellent, the cheese factor was very low. The chips were a bit salty, and more offending they were not crispy this time. Staff was nice when she came around, wait seemed a bit long considering there was no one there. I will go again, maybe it was just an off night. Worse thing: tepid water, no ice, in August!

We ordered drinks before the meal. I had a Vermont Red Ale for the first time which was very good and worth remembering. At this time they were serving'cocktails for a cause' in support of the Alzheimer's Association, which my other half decided to have. The drink, Fuchsia Butterflies ($15), was made solarium gin, house-made lemoncello, with a Gran Classico & Violet Rinse. It was quite excellent. I had a sip to try (I am usually not one for cocktails) and enjoyed the taste. Perhaps I will try cocktails in the future. For food we shared curry moules frites, well done, just how I like them, and salt and vinegar Wings - tasty but too salty which detracted from the dish. We ended with a good chocolate mint creme brûlée. The check came to $80 to which we added a decent tip for our friendly server, Triston. We have always enjoyed the vibe and cozy environment of this place and are sure to return.

A friend and I came in and put our names on the waitlist, waited for about 45 minutes at a bar down the street, and then had some of the most fulfilling tapas ever! We got a Prosciutto & Salpicao board, the Queijo de Cabra, and Frijol Dip. I also got a nice portuguese red wine that paired well with some of the cheese we received. At their front patio, they had the World Cup game playing, but the back patio felt cozier so we opted for that. The inside though was a strong second since the lighting is very low, creating a cool and calm environment. Walking through the restaurant to get to our table made me realize that each table is unique, no two are decorated the same or have the same furniture. It was a hot day but the overhead mesh cover blocked out a lot of the sun. Our waitress made us feel very welcome from the start and told us about their drink and food specials. My friend ordered Guatemalan beer as well as a Spanish beer. For food, we ordered the plantain fries, octopus, calamari, and shrimp salad, and grilled lamp chops. The seafood salad came out first. According to the menu, it was going to be paired with cornbread. It looked like sourdough bread but had a far denser consistency. I was expecting the salad to have lots of shrimp to act as a filler but surprisingly, it was about 60% octopus, 25% calamari, 10% shrimp, and 5% onions. The seafood was very flavorful, tasted fresh, and cooked perfectly. The portion size was great for two. Next came the plantain fries, which I was least impressed with as it was essentially fried plantain chunks. I think it would have been better if they were cut into smaller pieces that can be easily dipped and consumed in one bite. The plantain was gently ripe, so just a little sweet and the dipping sauce was like a less sour sour cream. Lastly, the lamp chops came out and the presentation was wonderful. They were a bit skinnier and less tender than that I was expecting, but flavor wise they were good. We enjoyed the food, ambiance, and service here.

We got two drinks: the Isuzu and the grape cobbler. The grape cobbler was okay - sweet but not much else going on. The Isuzu was SO bitter and I didn't like it. The description on the menu didn't match the drink at all. I wanted to like it here, and I've heard great things. Furthermore, several tables were seated around us, placed their drink orders, and had their drinks before our appetizers reached our table (both inside tables as well as those on the patio). I'm hoping the service issue was a lack of training, as it was not an incredibly busy day (surprising given pride was happening ‍). It was also mid afternoon so unaffected by any kind of rush.
