My daughter picked this place for my sister and I since we were going house hunting in the general area. We parked and went in we chose to eat indoors since it was pretty empty. We were introduced to 2 servers who were both very informative about the food and menu. Both very friendly. I thought it was a Mexican place, I was wrong. It is much closer to Latin food such as Venezuelan/Chilean~ South American. That doesn't change my mind. Let's see what you got... They brought out rolls for the table that were fantastic. My sister ordered Taquitos off the appetizer menu and made it into a meal, she enjoyed it and was stuffed. I ordered the Veggie Chili Relleno which was good but not great. I loved the mosaics, artwork and furniture made by the owners son... Although the place is old and dusty the food was good. The waitresses shared a lot of local history and information. Love this place! Ran by a mom and daughter duo. My grandmother and I came here for dinner one night. The joy balls were to die for. We also tried out their margaritas - nice pour. I got the fish tacos, definitely recommend but it was a lot for me to finish in one sitting. Grandma got the crab/lobster chile reano. I wish it had more veggies or cheese in it and less fishy. It was just piled into a bell pepper. We also go dessert, can't go wrong with the pie here! There were two things in my opinion that stood out to me and gave this place five stars. One - the atmosphere. I love how they have repurposed thrifted goods and trash into art work or part of the dishware. Second - the customer service. One of the ladies who owns the establishment came over and talked to us for a bit. It made the night special that she took time out of her busy schedule just to say hi to my grandma. Our first time at Diego's and we really enjoyed our meals. The server was busy as the place was full but she was on her game and kept checking in and moving everything quickly. Charming location and tasty dishes. I had the fried Tilapia Fish Taco meal and loved it. Husband had the Fajita and it was different than traditional versions but perfectly prepared and delicious. After visiting Empire Mines, we swung by Diegos when I saw that they were serving up Latin American dishes. The street tacos were by each so we got those instead of "appetizers", although it was the last item to come out but was happy with the flavors. I had my eye on the crab rellenos even though my tolerance of spicy is limited to mild. A little more kick than I'm use to but mild enough that I was able to finish it. Although in the future, if the Chilean sea bass is still a special, I would choose that instead. The panqueque reminds me of a cross between a burrito and a savory thick crepe that is best eaten with a fork and knife. Definitely a popular place which means the service may be on the slower side when they're full but nice to have this more creative option in Grass Valley. read more

This review is for their catering service. I was helping my daughter search for a caterer for her 40th Birthday Party. She had asked for my help with not a lot of notice. Tony was so helpful and responsive to all my questions. He made many suggestions that would work for the budget and limited amount of time we had. In the meantime my daughter decided not to use a catering service. I felt bad but Tony was so understanding. Fantastic!! The service was above and beyond. I even got a blanket from the owner because I was freezing from falling into waist high snow. The food was delicious! I couldn't stop eating. The fish taco was flavorful. The calamari was cooked just right. The Panqueque is HUGE and amazing. Dessert...the Celestino is a closing to an amazing meal. Love it. Overall. Ordered in the restaurant and waited on a to go order for 50 minutes. They finally came back and said they never actually printed the ticket and it will be ready in another 10 minutes. The restaurant closed shortly before they told us about our order, which begs the question how long would we have had to wait if they didn't just want us to leave? My wife and I stopped by prior to seeing a comedy show in grass valley. We both had the panqueque which is like a burrito but uses a crepe instead of a tortilla. There are many options to try. Maybe it was a new kitchen crew, not sure, but it did not feel like we were at the same place. We ordered the calamari to start and barely any breading on the calamari. Ordered the surf and turf fajitas and so not worth it. 3 shrimp and the steak was not tender and enough for one tortilla. Also ordered the pork loin. Pork was cooked perfectly but the sweet mashed potatoes were lacking flavor. We will go back again but only for dinner. read more

We hosted our son's and future daughter-in-law's Rehearsal Dinner at Diego's tonight. It was FABULOUS! Tony, June, Diane and Quinn provide exceptional service to make this event special. Brother, this is actually insane. I ordered their panqueque, thinking that by "grilled veggies" I was going to receive peppers and onions, maybe some mushrooms. What I was served was a disgusting plate of crepe, filled with celery, zucchini, and worst of all, broccoli. I can't speak for the rest of their menu, and have never felt the need to write a review before. But for those reading, avoid this item, and for the store, take this thing off the menu or at least list the veggies you plan to serve. read more

Diego's is off the beaten path from downtown Grass Valley but worth the short walk or drive! The restaurant is so charming outside and in. The service was fast and friendly! So incredibly slow and one waitress for the entire restaurant is a terrible idea. 20 min to get water. This hit the spot when my husband and I were looking for a good bite with outdoor seating. We came in and, since we wanted to sit outside, waited a little for our table. But the wait wasn't long. We ordered the sangria pitcher, a burrito, tacos, and an appetizer. Omg so much Food! We could have just share the burrito. I highly recommend the pork with pineapple for your tacos. It was so tasty and bright. The chicken was just okay. I think it was mostly thigh meat (which I know a lot of people prefer), but it's not my fav. My husband liked it tho. Diego's is a charming restaurant serving dishes packed with flavor! We love the colorful ambiance and friendly servers. The first time we dined here there was live music which was an added bonus. I've never tried Chilean food before and our waitress suggested ordering the panqueque and we were not disappointed. It was huge! This dish could definitely be shared among two people. The calamari was light and fresh. I also really enjoyed the fish and shrimp tacos. The menu is pretty expansive so there's definitely something for everyone. This Latin American restaurant is two minutes from downtown and is obviously well loved by the locals. Cozy decor and warm welcoming family run. The Chilean sauces in my fajitas were a warm citrusy change from traditional Mexican sauce and the pulled pork was tender and rich. My husband's steak and vegetables were excellent. I was impressed that vegetarian options are available for most dishes. The homemade Chilean sauces and desserts were sophisticated and delicious. The Celosina dessert was a fabulous crepe filled with bananas and warm caramel topped with vanilla ice cream. The staff was so sweet; they literally offered blankets on a chilly evening ! We were looking for something unique in Grass Valley and we are so glad we found this fabulous restaurant. Chilean inspired South American dishes were vibrant with flavor and exploded with delicious fragrances. Wow! We loved every bite from the spicy shrimp with Diegos slaw to the stuffed portobello mushroom. My Rock Crab stuffed Chile relleno was delicious. My dish also came with black beans and rice Our Tres Leches for dessert was excellent too. We had been out and about and the San Pellegrino water hit the spot. The service was excellent and our team checked in on us frequently. We started out with home made rolls which were very tasty. The habanero hot sauce adds a bit of kick so use sparingly unless you really like hot. Across the street is a Bed n breakfast so we are scheming to come back to explore more of the local wineries. This place is going to make you happy. The menu is huge with a lot of Chilean and Mexican dishes. We both loved our entrees and dessert too. The panqueque was a Chilean style crepe that looked giant but was surprisingly not too heavy. It's a family run restaurant and the service is warm and friendly and the atmosphere casual and eclectic. Prices were reasonable and portions generous. What more could you want? read more
