Yelp Elite Review: A Taste of Home I'm Puerto Rican and Italian, and I grew up with a Puerto Rican grandmother who owned three Puerto Rican restaurants called the Latin Barn back in the day. So when I tell you I know and LOVE Puerto Rican food, I'm not just talking--I've got childhood credentials! I came here with my oldest son and his wife for her birthday, and then something unexpected happened: I started crying. The flavors, aromas, and atmosphere brought a flood of childhood memories rushing back. Food can do that--and this place absolutely nailed it. I ordered the Puerto Rican Special with shredded pork, arroz con gandules, sweet plantains, and beans. AWESOME! I also tried the empanadas with both chicken and beef, and they were incredible. And portions? Let's just say they apparently believed we were feeding the entire extended family. We were given so much food that I had leftovers for the next day--which meant I got to have an encore performance! The Caribbean atmosphere combined with Ashland's unique vibe creates a warm, welcoming place where people actually seem to enjoy being there. The staff was friendly, helpful, and loved to laugh--which is definitely a Puerto Rican thing to do...right after making sure you have nice shoes. The dessert selection was fantastic, too. From the beef stew to the pork, the rice, the plantains, and everything in between, you are going to fall in love with this food. This is officially my new favorite place. Visited this place again recently and have revised my opinions. I hadn't been in literally years, but I came for a friend's birthday recently and felt a small disdain toward myself for the original bad review. We had a large party and I think the service could have possibly been more attentive, but that's always a hit or miss for a large group. Our waiter was super kind and despite so many of us getting there at different times the spacing between entrees was excellent. I had a pina colada coquito fusion cocktail and it was delicious. My friend tried their take on the espresso martini and it was also balanced really nicely. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and it had a good selection! Honorable mention is the patio. I didn't even know they had a patio?? Such colorful outdoor decor paired with plants made me feel like I could spend hours with my friends here. I'd easily see myself going there alone for lunch someday just to relax outside, especially during the summer. Very decent amount of shade as well. Everyone really enjoyed their food and I got the paella again. This time it wasn't mushy rice and packed full of seafood, however the dish holding the food was very shallow and not an enormous portion. I'd think the portion would maybe be split between three people easily? But any large groups would need additional orders. The empanadas were tasty as well and I'm excited to try the different options next time I come. Worth checking out and an amazing food spot for summertime to enjoy outside. Parking at this place can be kind of hard to find, so be mindful of that. We ended up parking across the way at the lot across the street. The restaurant definitely has a dark lounge-y feel. Nice for a date night kind of thing. The back patio is really gorgeous, especially on a spring/summer night. My bestie and I hit this spot up after we saw a show at the Guild Theater. It was a super fun night. We got a couple of drinks and tostones and maduritos to start. I love me some plantains and I thought this was a good rendition of it. I think we got for the main plates the mofongo and the pollo guisado. Those were ok. I think that some of the meat was drier than it should have been so it was just ok. I was really excited to try this Puerto Rican restaurant as I'm a huge fan of Caribbean food. The place is located close to the 16th Ave exit on US 50. Inside it's very swanky with dim red neon lighting and salsa music in the background. This reminded me of salsa dancing nights long ago when I lived in Washington, DC. I was quickly greeted by the server who was very attentive. The food tasted very authentic and homemade. The house salad and plantain maduros were very tasty. This was my first time eating mofungo which also tasted great. The coquito cheesecake was a delightful dessert. I look forward to coming back with my wife. read more

It's been so long since I've been to Lola's Lounge, that I didn't realize I'd been here before; just previously during their Elk Geove location. My girlfriend and I dined at Lola's Lounge off Broadway for the first time this past week. Once we arrived we were greated and aaked if we wanted to sit inside our outdoors, to which we opted to sit outdoors. The outdoor area is a nice spacious area, with a homely and simply vibe. Filled with vibrant decor, assorted plants and knick snacks. It such a chill vibe, which is great for couples dinning and large parties of families and friends. Our waiter was very friendly and extremely welcoming, and he made several suggestions for dishes and drinks; several of which we ended up getting. Drinks: Passionfruit Paloma - $16 Happy Cuba Libre - $8 Appetizer: Half Tostones Half Maduritos - $12 Main Course: Blackened Salmon - $29 PR Special - $22 Dessert: Flancocho - $11 The appetizer...cheap The drinks...great The food...amazing! The half Tostones and half Maduritos were really and inexpensive ($12). We loved the chopped garlic on the Tostones, and the Maduritos were simple as they should be. The PR Mule and Paloma were large in portion and really good as well. And the Blackened Salmon and PR Special were delicious as well, and I'll neber turn down more Maduros as the PR Special came with them as well. I'd originally wanted to order the Mofongo, but unfortunately they were out at the time so I'll have to try it the next time we go. We had a Tequila a infused beverage and a Old Fashion type of libation. The food was okay but the drinks were better. Had a few Plantains and empanadas. The Server was nice but everything was alright. It seemed to close early and food from the kitchen closed early like 10:30. TLDR: Lola's is a great little restaurant, with a really cozy ambience and amazing food. It's a perfect place for date nights where you can usually be assured of great service and food. Our recent visit was definitely NOT the norm. Read on for details. The good: The food was amazing! Presentation was top notch. The Pastelon was very well seasoned, although I wish the portion was larger for the price, and the side of beans and rice were cooked perfectly. The bad: It was cold as heck in the restaurant! The ambient temp was about 65 degrees and they had all the ceiling fans running on high, with the front door open. I noticed other diners were also bundled up in coats. I'm not sure why they didn't at least turn the speed of the fans down. We were initially seated right under a fan and asked to move to a different table that was away from the fans. That seat was better but it was still rather cool in the restaurant. Second, the service was rather slow. I'm sure they made the food fresh so a little wait time is to be expected, but It took so long for our order to come that the server decided to bring us an order of potato chips because he noticed the long wait. read more

Lola's is a hidden gem among the hustle and bustle of 16th St. With several other haunts nearby, it's easy to dismiss if you are not looking for it, but once inside it is a warm welcoming. Cool Puerto Rican spot with bar indoor seating and a good sized private patio. It's basically across the street from the iconic Willies Burger downtown. The Bank of America on the other side closed down so we parked in their lot. We tried a lot of things but the wings, paella and choco flan stood out. The wings were giant plump and juicy $13. The paella was covered in home made chips and had an underlying heat. Paella is portioned for 2 at $50. Now I normally don't care for flan as it seems to one note for me. However choco flan is paired with moist chocolate cake and it was the perfect combination. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. The patio is deconstructed granite so I wouldn't recommend bringing your pet unless you don't mind them getting dirty. Overall a great experience here and we would like to try more of the menu. read more

We tried Lola's Lounge on a whim, and we are really glad we did. I had no idea there was an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant so close to Land Park. Everything about this place is amazing: 1) Love the ambiance. They really go all out for Christmas, and it's a super cute place to have a holiday meal. They even decorate two trees all in Puerto Rican flags and emblems. 2) The staff is great. Super friendly and attentive, and they took the time to not only address my dairy issue, but also just have a nice conversation. 3) The menu is great, as is the taste of the food and the prices. They have an awesome happy hour a few days per week. The vegan bowl was so good, super flavorful. There's actually a lot of dairy-free items here. They also have a ton of fun drinks including Puerto Rican spirits. The only think they are missing is beer from Ocean brewery. Our kids also loved their meals, which is not always the case! My husband and I had dinner at Lola's Lounge on Saturday night, and we had such a great time! The food and service were both excellent. We started with the Pineapple Guava Wings, which were absolutely delicious! For our mains, my husband ordered Carne Guisada, and I went with the Puerto Rican Special, which our server highly recommended. Let me just say.... the Puerto Rican Special was incredible! It had it all, which was maduritos, arroz con gandules, pork, beans, and fresh avocado. Every bite was full of flavor, and it was so good my husband kept sneaking bites off my plate (I had to swat his hand away!). We even found ourselves talking about that dish the next day. It's street parking only, so give yourself a little extra time to find a spot. I also definitely recommend making reservations ahead of time. Such cool vibes happening at Lola's Lounge. My mom requested this spot for her birthday dinner, and we were all stunned by the beauty and the flavors. Upon arrival we were kindly greeted and seated. I tried the patatas de crema and the Tito's steak. The patatas de crema has a fun wasabi sauce drizzled on it without being too spicy. The Tito's steak wasn't my favorite since it was slightly on the sweeter side but it was still yummy! I loved the salad and the rice that I got with it (I subbed rice for the potatoes). Nice date night restaurant! Very beautifully decorated. All of the staff here are attentive and friendly. During my visit, I decided to go with the pastelon, which is a plantain lasagna. Seriously good!!! A coworker recommended this place to us, and I'm so glad we finally tried it. It's such a fun atmosphere and the staff were so nice. We were there on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't super busy and that meant we got to chat with the bartender and server for awhile. They gave us great recommendations, and we were so full of delicious food and drink when we left! I would highly recommend checking out Lola's. Especially if you've never had food from PR before. The owners are very involved, and it really shows. They're great, very nice people who clearly care about their customers and their restaurant. And the food... amazing. Every dish was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. My husband is from the Bronx, New York, and he immediately said the food tasted just like back home. I went with a friend and we ordered: Tostones and Maduritos Pineapple Guava Wings Mofongo Puerto Rican Special (pork, plantains, arroz con gandules) My favorite was the pork with arroz con gandules -- super flavorful, tender, and not over-salted or dry. Everything had a nice balance of seasoning, and nothing felt heavy. The wings were fun too with that sweet pineapple-guava sauce. On top of the food, the service stood out. Joel and Lola made us feel welcome the whole time, and that just made the dining experience feel like a fun & comfortable hangout. Great customer service & good food! Enjoyed every dish I've tried here except the Paella. I ordered it again the other day after trying it a few years prior and it lacked flavor the 1st time and was oversalted/meat was dry the second time. My friend & I enjoyed the pineapple guava wings (perfectly seasoned & our fav dish of the night) , potatoes patatas de crema, & our mocktails. I would give the food 3.5 stars but rounded up since the staff here always provide stellar customer service and the restaurant as a whole has such a warm upbeat vibe! When you are looking for Puerto Rican food in Sacrament, It works. The rice is some of the best ive had. Portion size is my biggest complaint on some of the dishes for the price. The Puerto Rican specal. Good size. The carne guisada I was shocked by the size and amount of beef in the stew. Maybe because it was for takeout through grubhub. Also got a cubano before and it was on the small side to me. I do wish to try them in person soon to see if that makes the difference. I wish they would add bacalaitos read more

Yum yum yum I've been to Lola's Lounge a few times now and I've even ordered DoorDash from here which tells you everything you need to know. The mofongo is hands down my favorite. I've been working my way through the menu at Lola's since I first came here. Last night I went on a first date, and naturally this place was my first choice for dinner. It was a beautiful day, so we opted to eat outside in the beautiful patio area, with flowers blossoming and the hummingbirds making an appearance, which I had mentioned to my date prior to arriving. (Thank you, hummingbird). I absolutely love every dish I've tried at Lola's so far, but last night I ordered the blackened salmon for the first time and OH MY GOD. Order this. I took one bite and told my date to try it as well, we both agreed it was the best salmon we've ever had. She had the Puerto Rican special and loved it. I almost ordered the same, because it's always tempting to order the entrees I know that I love, but I'm so happy I'm still trying new things. Lola's Lounge has become one of my favorite restaurants in Sacramento. I cannot believed I've lived so close to this spot for years and hadn't tried it till the beginning of this year. The ambiance is very cute, and I'm excited to see the new/revamped patio! The service is very kind and personable. I love the selection of food at very reasonable prices with large portions. Additionally, I like the assortment of Latin cocktails, I cannot wait to try them all! My favorite apps are the tostones, wings, & empanadillas! Make sure you ask for their delicious pique as well. One of my favorite dishes is a Cubano, and I was ecstatic to see Lola's had one on the menu. The Cubano sandwich is outstanding and comes with fresh potato chips (I normally am not a chip person, but I finished every single bite of mine!). Although it is hard to part from the Cubano, the arroz con pollo has easy become one of my favorite dishes as well! A great Yelp recommendation, this place has a very unique way of plating each dish. In fact, the entire preparation is wonderfully different from the Puerto Rican restaurants in Fla and the Deep South. The servers were terrific and attentive. Everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere was alive and positive. Parking really sucked, something outside their control. We walked a couple short blocks. Totally worth it. Pro Tip: Gentlemen, drop your ladies at the door and handle the rest! The food was delightfully. Tasted great to us. I'm no connoisseur of Spanish food so I can't speak to the authenticity of their flavours. But then again, I don't really care. I know that I like it and would love to return! Pro Tip2: I suggest the Boricua Appetizer and the Mofongo, although I would like to have seen a little more Pernil. If you ask, they'll probably accommodate. After two visits and one attempt, I can say this place is very good. The sign at the front door asking for patience because of the small staff is accurate and the wait is worth it. My first attempt was a failure because the wait was too long for us. Second attempt a success. We sat inside and food and drinks amazing. This visit we were asked if we wanted to sit outside. I've been eager to visit Lola's for a while. First of all, the parking situation is terrible. There are tow-away signs on the street, and the parking lot across the street is reserved for other businesses, making it seem impossible to find parking. However, Lola's has a very cute interior and an even cuter outdoor patio. I initially thought Lola's served only Puerto Rican food, but it turns out to be a mix of various Hispanic cuisines. Our waitress was very kind and even gave us complimentary celebratory drinks since we were celebrating. Please note that I've never had Puerto Rican food before, so I have nothing to compare it to. My review is based solely on my taste buds and not on authenticity. We started with beef empanadas and found them to be very tasty. My friend loved her mofongo and found it authentic. My husband ordered the guisado, something I didn't think he'd enjoy, but he found it flavorful and delicious. I got the pastelón, which is lasagna made with plantains instead of noodles. Wow! I was surprised by how much I loved it. Ground turkey can sometimes lack the flavor of ground beef, but this was perfect. It had the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Walked in and were seated right away. The staff was very friendly. The ambiance had happy/party vibes which was perfect way to start the weekend. My husband and I decided to grab beers and they were nice and cold. I had the arroz con pollo and it was very tasty, the portion was big. My husband had mofongo with pernil which had a great presentation including a small Puerto Rican flag. It was served with arroz con granules. The mofongo was good with plantains and the pernil pork mixed together. The only thing lacking was flavor in the pork as the menu stated garlic pork but he couldn't taste garlic.
