This is a nice to place to eat. The ambiance is very casual and they have a nice patio if you prefer to eat outside. The food is good.

Reading all the good reviews, I ordered the pupusas reasonably expecting authentic El Salvadoran food. NOT!! What I got was cardboard-like disks of dough (I think) made soggy by the Cole slaw salad on top. I couldnt eat 2 bites. Seriously, I don't know what regional cuisine they supposedly serve here but it is decidedly nothing from Central or South America I can assure you. Don't waste your time or taste buds here! read more

The decor is awesome and so is the waitress Kourtni! My boyfriend and I drove to Colfax for a day hike and needed a place to eat so we stopped by here. There were mixed reviews but decided to try it anyways. The sangria tasted watered down and did not have much flavor but you can have a sample so try it for yourself. We decided on a bottle of wine and a few appetizers to start. The honey, Siracha shrimp with the pineapple, bacon salad thing was to die for!!! The homemade jalapeño poppers were good but needed a dipping sauce or something to bring them to life. Salads with homemade dressing were good. Dinner entrees were not very good and the prices were more expensive than the website says. I had the crab relleno which basically tasted very bland and kinda of soggy. It came with mixed grilled veggies and black beans, neither of which had any seasoning on them! Also came with rice (white) with carrots and peas in it...question? Basically I would come back for apps and a drink but I would not come back for more than that! read more

So the perfunctory little breads that come with every meal are a delightful little starter, little round balls of perfectly fluffy bread which you can dress up with herb butter and cut the richness with a little ceviche onion-cilantro stuff. The meal started off great and ended on a so-so level. My dining companion had the panqueque with pork which was super delicious and super flavorful, I highly recommend. I ordered the appetizer of calamari as my entree because they pile it high and it looked so crisp and delicious. But our server came back and informed me that they were out. So I ask our server a recommendation as I am debating between the polenta and the pupusa. She convinces me to get the pupusa... big mistake. I have had excellent pupusas in the past and I think Diego's served me the worst ones I have ever had. It came out brick hard which matched the brick-like denseness of the deep fried masa. You get two pupusas in an order, if you eat both I wouldn't be surprised if you a) never pooped again or b) shat a brick. Gross, I know, but that's how much I am trying to tell everyone to skip the pupusas. I would definitely eat here again because the panqueques and little breads were so good, but I would definitely steer clear of the pupusas! read more

My first visit to D's was worthy of 3-4 stars. The food was tasty, decor funky and charming, the wait-staff was charming as well, though fretfully quite inexperienced. The restaurant was filled maybe 3/4 full and each server was running around looking stressed and throwing out "I'll be right back" as if it were their motto. Second visit, FAR worse. The apathetic chap took my girlfriends order, then looked at me and directly said "so nothing for you?", rather than simply taking my order, or at the very least asking if I cared for anything. I ordered the pupusas (typically a Salvadorian food) which were culinarily inaccurate. Way too thick with masa, too little filling, not fried properly to create the crispy shell, without meat (contrary to their advertising), no curtido (pupusas are always served with curtido!), and way overpriced. My water glass sat empty for 20 or more minutes. The server wasn't trained how to manage his section, or at the very least how to respond to a patrons pleas for service. Walking to and fro attending to one person at a time whilst ignoring all other calls for attention is wildly inefficient at best. When the kid finally got around to bringing the bill, he so very kindly included a comment sheet, but no pen. I asked the busser, a woman in her late 40'sish, for her pen and she said "sure, but you better write something nice, or I WILL POISON YOUR FOOD NEXT TIME." Clearly she meant this as a cute joke, HOWEVER, it is horrifyingly inappropriate for ANYONE in the food industry to THREATEN A PATRON WITH POISONED FOOD, however cheeky or cute she thinks she's being. If someone were to hear that comment and come down with a food-born illness, the owners could easily lose the restaurant. Lastly, there is a chalkboard posted in the patio area that reads something to the effect of "we love, we laugh, we make mistakes, so be gentle on us". Management needs to get a clue. The Panqueque is life changing, seriously. The patio is gorgeous and has stunning decorations, they even covered a table in gorgeous wild flowers for me when I went last year for my birthday! I would eat at Diego's every day if I could. And don't even get me started on the fresh rolls and cilantro dipping sauce! So good! Soooo good! I worked downtown for a while and would ride my beach cruiser to Diego's to get take out for my lunch break even, and anytime customers would ask where to go I would send then there. What I enjoy most about going to a restaurant is when everyone knows you. Since our first visit we have been treated more like family than a frequent diner. Yes it is cozy, and yes the wait is lengthy, but the staff (especially Shelly) more than make up for any inconveniences experienced. A very interesting yet relaxing atmosphere. Tasty food, and ample portions. We liked the vibe, a lot. (Should really be 4-1/2 stars, because I don't give a 5 too easily.) The bistec was excellent, and the anticucho was good, but not as tasty, although the chimichurri it came with was phenomenal. I first came to Grass Valley on business, but I can tell you that with Bay-area weekenders, this City has some great food. Diego's is the kind of place to come with friends or family, grab a table outside, and prepare for food awesomeness. The little bread "drops" they serve are great with the garlic butter or awesome dipping sauce. I have had the peach bbq ribs, various panquque, the churasco, sangria, more sangria, and great deserts. I usually get on her to complement places, so this is the least amount of stars I've used on here... This was by far the weirdest dining experience I've had in years. First we walked in (cause the outside decor is so cute!!) and stood there for awhile- not a customer or employee in sight.. We finally flagged down a young man from the back and he did a quick walk thru the restaurant and apologized as he could not find the waitresses either. He let us take our 6 menus and seat ourselves outside. 10 minutes later we got our drinks and my daughters had a long dark hair tangled in the ice. I wasn't about to complain as I've heard stories about what happens then. I prefer to just not go back. A couple of our ice-less glasses of water in mismatched cups (one cracked down the side) were obviously not clean. One actually had food on it. The food was decent but the cleanliness and service was not good at all. Plus it's not small kid friendly considering they only offered a $12.99 cheeseburger for finicky eaters. read more

I made it in for my second visit to Diego's with my family and was quite pleased with the flavor and quality of the food and desserts. All of the adults ate some variation of the taco special (fish, steak & chicken) all of which were flavorful, light and tasty. The kids had PB&J and chicken strips, which they enjoyed and the chicken was great from what I was told. I am a HUGE fan of their desserts ~ we shared the chocolate bread pudding and cielo... Mmm hot, freshly made gooey goodness... The part that has been lacking on both visits was speed of service(or lack thereof). Our waitress this visit was very fun, kind and sweet, but the speed at which she got drinks out was quite slow - we never got refills and we never got our bread, which she had said she'd bring right out. I love the patio, food and atmosphere at Diego's but I have concluded that you better come prepared to wait if you come in for dinner. read more

This place has a lot going for it, the decor is very cute and the food is quite good. But I recently had lunch at Diego's and while the food was delicious, I was disappointed. The service was okay, but we were not offered anything to drink. Plus, the place was so full of flies that it made just sitting there uncomfortable. The server had them on her arms, they were all over the table and one even flew in my ear. My friend enjoyed her food, and mine was really delicious, but essentially very few pieces of meat in a large crepe with some very underdone grilled vegetables. That was it! This "panqueque" set me back $15! No soup or salad offered with it at lunch, no side dishes...I just didn't understand the price and expected something much more elaborate than a scantily filled burrito for that much money. I will go back and I hope they have fixed the fly problem by then, but I will be very careful about what I order next time. read more

It's been a while since I have been in but remembering how good the the food was the two times I was in and knowing how appreciative small businesses are of these Yelp reviews, I thought I'd comment. The first time I came in was on New Years eve a few years back. I had fish taco's. I don't know if they are on the regular menu. I think they were a "special" item that day. I was fortunate enough to get the last plate of them that day so they were obviously popular. Outstanding. Made from fresh ingredients. As far as I know, the only fresh made fish taco in Grass Valley. The second time I came in I went with a simple classic, the burger. This has to be, hands down, the best burger in the city of Grass Valley. I was told that the beef was acquired locally, as in from cows that once lived within 10-20 miles. I'm not sure of the science of how a locally raised cow is going to provide better beef than a cow that was raised down at that Cowschwitz facility off the 5 Freeway in Central CA, but I tell you this: That beef had, at the minimum, as good a flavor as the best burgers I've had anywhere in the USA, if not better. And certainly the best in the town of Grass Valley. The decor is really neat and super eclectic. If I'm not mistaken, they acquired everything from local yard, garage, and estate sales, so everything is mis-matched which adds a cool flair. Additionally, purchasing your stuff like that gives new life to old stuff and bypasses the need to create new "things" for purchase and consumption. Very Grass Valley. Service was attentive and friendly. Diego's is a Grass Valley classic and most definitely worth your time when in town. read more

I've only been here once so far, but the Portabello Mushroom Panqueque was amazing. I've never had anything like it......soooo good. We took dessert to go and it had a hair in it though, so that's one complaint I had. We called them and told them and they said when we went in next they would comp our dessert, but we haven't had the chance to go back yet. I like the interesting decor of the place, but I did feel like they stuck us in a hole in the back as it was a little too dark for my taste. Ambience is good, but when it's so dark you're wondering if the lights are on at all you've gone too far. Overall I liked it and plan on going back! read more

Love Diego's! First time here, had the mole enchiladas with chicken, my wife had the stuffed portabela mushroom. The meal came with soup or salad and we both got salads. The mole enchiladas had perfect flavor with home made mole. The plate doesn't come swimming in mole, which I like (probably more a Mexican style), but the shredded chicken had been marinated in it, so the flavor was there. Both plates came with a side of black beans and rice, and the side salads were small and tasty. For our entrees and splitting a pitcher of Sangria, we ended up paying around 70.00. A little steep for my taste, however, if you want to count on a place where you know you will get a perfect meal with warm ambience, you can trust Diego's. read more

While the decor was.... interesting. The experience and food fell far short of satisfactory. My group and I were seated outside next to a quite busy road. If the noise wasn't enough to stifle any attempt at conversation, the flies insistently swarming the tables made me fear opening my mouth. Though the place seemed relatively deserted, the service was slower than it should have been if the place were completely packed. After finally receiving my food, I find my food was no more than dry "pork" in a burnt tortilla looking thing with some brown flavorless sauce. This is my favorite restaurant in Grass Valley. I come here at least 3 times per month, and love the food and the friendly atmosphere. The owner is just beautiful and so sweet. I think the artistic eclectic ambiance adds a special touch that you just don't get in a chain restaurant. Order the Churrasco sandwich and a pitcher of sangria and be prepared to enjoy an evening out. Diego's is just such a gem, and makes me very happy! read more
