I don't understand the reviews. If you go in with the right expectations, then this is a fine donut shop. Overpriced?: you live in San Ramon/East Bay don't you? You expect a family owned shop to undercut prices and compete with other vendors around the area? Cash only?: cards can be used for transactions greater than $5. Bad tasting?: the donuts taste about as average as any family owned donut shop I've been to. I swear they all taste the same unless it's some hipster/boutique donut shop that charges $7 for one donut. This might be a good place if you like raised, filled and glazed donuts (but I don't). The selection is quite limited. They had maple bars, chocolate bars, heart shaped raised (and filled?) donuts, flat looking donut holes (35 cents each), pale looking croissants, a few muffins, etc. They also have coffee to go with your donut. I like cake donuts and they only had one kind: plain cake with white frosting and rainbow sprinkles (85 cents). That was the only donut in the case that I would actually eat. The cake part was very tender and moist, with a slightly crunchy top. The frosting was very, very sweet (yuck). The donut had an oily aftertaste. The inside is much more decorated than your usual donut shop. It looks like a 50's diner with movie posters. Cash only. read more

The interior of this little mom and pop donut shop is absolutely adorable! There are alternating black and white tiles alternating to form a checkerboard pattern. There are red padded round stools and red chairs that gives the shop the overall feel of a 60's era diner. It is just too cute. Mom and I stopped in to purchase two "ice" drinks and split a glazed donut which totalled $2.95. Since the ice drinks are usually sold for $1 in grocery and drug stores I'm assuming that not only was the donut about a dollar, but they didn't jack up the price of the drinks - score. The donut was a good example of a raised donut, light and not overly sweet glaze, but I have to be honest - there just wasn't anything special about it that made me think "OMG, I must come back here." I am quite the donut aficionado. Doesn't that sound SOOOOO much nicer than saying that I'm a donut addict? I'm always in search of those donuts that rise above the others in quality and taste and I have to admit I can be pretty picky. This one just didn't meet that standard. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the donut, it's good - just not amazing. After reading all of the bad reviews about the horrible service here I feel kind of cheated that I didn't have some dramatic experience with the "Donut Nazi" lady that I can recount for you. The lady who helped us wasn't overly friendly, but she certainly wasn't rude. A smile would have been nice, but wasn't a prerequisite for a positive donut experience. If you're in this adorable little shopping center and need a donut, by all means come pick them up here. They're probably better than the ones you'd pick up at a grocery store, I just wouldn't drive all the way across town to come get them. And I can name you two other donut shops in Pleasanton and San Ramon that I visited this weekend to which I WOULD drive an extra seven or eight miles to pick up donuts, they're THAT good. My husband ordered a frosted, raised donut. The donuts were... donuts. I am not a fan of cake donuts. It tasted like a cake donut. I like raised donuts and this one was quite good. Fresh and soft. Not bad at all... My usual spot (Best Donuts) is closed on Sundays & family already had 'the fever' with their only cure being 'Donuts' (said with my best Christopher Walken cowbell impression). We're not big fans of Dainty Donuts as they are quite dense (almost a day-old feel) & their sugar basically crusts on the donut with an unappetizing texture that I usually just scrape off into the garbage. Saw the horrendous reviews @ Digby's (primarily with service) so figured, I'd be a glutton for punishment as long as the end result is tasty. Anyway, showed up & there was an older Asian women behind the counter. As far as overall initial experience: - She greeted me when I arrived (definitely a plus) - They had a decent stock available, even showing up @ around 9:30AM or so (another plus) - No small-talk, strictly business but she reminded me of the older Chinese Aunties running authentic businesses in the city (which if you've dealt with these types of business first-hand, you'd expect exactly the same lukewarm enthusiasm). Actions (food in this case) speak louder than words & I can live without the small-talk if the end result is satisfying. As an unexpected +, when I got home she even snuck in a few FREE donut holes. I saw a few reviewers complaining of the price of the donut holes but check out my pic in comparison with a typical glaze & you'll see that 32 cents ain't that bad. These are some of the biggest donut holes I've ever had. They look like something punched out of the Fair-sized Texas donuts. Donuts themselves were very tasty & fluffy. Loved the maple bars. I'd say they were quite similar/on-par with Best Donuts so no biggie anymore that they aren't open on Sundays. Anyhoo..., I've yet to have an unfavorable experience though I'll keep showing up on Sunday playing Russian roulette regardless. Worst service ever. Basically sold out at 9:30 am. Does not take card but they had a ATM so at least there's that so I had to pay an additional $3.00 for my $3.00 sandwich. My sandwich was made wrong and I didn't notice until I got to my car. She told me I had to keep it because she couldn't sell it to anyone now that I took it outside. Are you kidding me??!? She said she would make me another one but she would have to charge me again. I said no and she finally (after much arguing about how I have an allergy and can't eat it how she made it) remade it. Wrong again. She gave me a huge attitude and after explaining that she heard me say I wanted "xyz" on my sandwich. I said no I'm allergic to "x like I told you and there was no "z" on it the first time. The attitude I got was unreal. Slamming doors as she made it again. I will never buy from here again. I stumbled upon this place with my partner this morning as we were checking out other stores in the area, and we were astounded. We're from Oakland, so to find a delicious little donut spot tucked away in San Ramon was such a treat. The person working the counter was absolutely lovely and were so patient as we made our decisions. I LOVED THESE DONUTS!!!!! They were perfectly fluffy, and rich. The custard filling was to die for! Smaller local minority owned donut shop. It's located in the outer ring of a strip mall (The Marketplace Shopping Center) facing bollinger canyon road. There is a severe lunch crowd at this strip mall due to the many small restaurants located here. During the peak lunch rush you may have to park on the inside parking section and hoof it over. Not that big a deal, and of course only applies to the lunch hour, otherwise there's plenty of parking. The menu is pretty basic. There's you're standard donuts, long jons, cinnimon rolls, apple fritters, donut holes, croissants in both breakfasty (meat, egg, cheese) and plain varieties. It's cash only, but on the other hand a super awesome plain glazed and a cuppa joe will run you less then two bucks. The coffee isn't organic coffee, hand grown by blind nuns as part of an overpriced super elite coffee line. There's no espresso, latte's or anything fancier then a cup of drip coffee in a thermos style dispenser. The coffee come in varuios descriptions-robust, mellow, french, hazelnut, none of which mean anything particularly. It's just good, plain coffee. Perfect with donuts. The donuts are pretty awesome. For some reason in cali it's hard to find decent unhealthy fried sugar laden goodness, but Digby's nails it. Chewy, fried, sweet and made fresh successively throughout the day. Also pretty cheap. The inside has about ten chair/table combos, and there is a counter to sit at facing the window. They have that 1950's rock 'n roll diner look, and they keep it impeccably clean. Spotless even. The owners are of cambodian descent. I have the impression that they've just taken over the business. I've not had any issues with the service, the counter folks move quickly, fill orders politely, and always smile. They recognize regulars and are in general very friendly. They open at 5 am and that donut counter can run down quickly. While they will make more as needed, coming in at 1 pm for six dozen donut holes may be the kind of thing you want to call in a day ahead if you really want them. Frankly, this is an outstanding (and cost effective) place to have a coffee and sweet in. Bonus points for the snarky name. read more
