I was excited to try their sandwiches after reading their menu but was deeply disappointed by the service. It was a Saturday at 11:15 and they had 3 people working. It was NOT busy and it took them almost 20 minutes to make our order. We ordered 6 sandwiches but come on! You're a sandwich spot! One of the staff was new but he wasn't even trying to hustle. The other staff would stop to talk to the others while making a sandwich. The only one who seemed to pick up the pace was a young lady. Not even at a sit down restaurant does it take this long to get your food. The food was 3 stars but due to the pace, I have to average it out here. If you order sandwiches to go and have to go next door to Serena & Lili to browse the entire store, something isn't right. After this experience, I read through some of the reviews and couldn't help but notice the business owner is rude to people's criticism. In all my years of being an elite yelper, I've never seen that before. They must be doing well if an owner does that. We were greeted as soon as we walked through the doors, customer service was on point, staff worked fast on our sandwich and wait time was less than 5 minutes. The setting was like a farm style ambiance which is very Vacaville. As for the food, sauces and cheese are considered add ons to the sandwiches which are $1 in comparison to other sandwich shops which is already included. The sandwiches were very basic and average. There isn't a variety of size and type of bread. Overall, it's an okay spot don't expect a lot of meat and huge portions. read more

Diggers Deli is ICONIC . If you are from Vacaville you know this. I used to go to Diggers back when Paul and Sharon owned it. It's exchanged hands a few times since then. This was my first time here with current owners. The revamp they did looks nice however, I wish they would have stayed true to what an authentic deli should look like. We decided to pick up a few sandwiches for dinner. This being said, I was so disappointed with what we took home. To the owners, you have a wonderful opportunity to make this a great place. Not an average place as you have done. There was nothing special about either sandwich we bought. Meat and cheese, average. Quality veggies nope. My sourdough roll was dry and hard. My husband's sandwich literally had 4 pieces of salami on it. Completely unacceptable. Please think outside of the box. Do some research. Find better quality meats and cheeses. We are in the Mecca of great food. In between SF and Sac. Near Napa. Near all of these local farms. I know you can get better. I know you can do better. 15$ for a sandwich is a good price for a great quality sandwich. Not for what I took home tonight. Please rethink your strategy. I read you always wanted to own a deli. If that is true, make it a true deli. If not you are basically another Subway with a different name. Nothing special. Vacaville needs a few special places. Our food options Suck. Had an opportunities to try and grab a bite with Wifey today so decided to go with a local favorite. It has been a while since my last visit to Digger's Deli but I could tell that a lot has changed in the last few years. One thing was obvious, in these times of social distancing and restrictions on eating in ... there were a lot of folks eating in. Also noticed that 1/2 the folks behind the counter were not wearing masks and only one had it fully covering the face. I'm not the biggest fan of wearing masks, so thought ... okay cool. That was until the one guy without a mask wipes his nose and coughs (openly). Yes ... that happened today ... and was only the beginning. This observation had been made after placing our order so, just we (the wife and I) were concerned but not discouraged ... until. The person making the sandwich grabs a wrapped sandwich and runs from behind the counter outside of the store to chase down a customer who had received the wrong sandwich ... to exchange it. With much surprise, we watched at this same (sandwich) person returns behind the counter ... finishes making a second sandwich and calls our name. Yeah ... Naw! No thank you for the obvious risk that would be offered on a normal day but NOT DURING A GLOBAL Pandemic. I'm not sure if the guy behind the counter was the Owner or another guy who just doesn't feel like others can tell him what to do. Digger's is absolutely delicious! We ordered a breakfast sandwich, Italian, grilled cheese and a half BLT-with potato salad and a deviled egg. Initially they forgot to add the potato salad and egg, but were happy to correct the order and I'm so glad we went back-the deviled egg was so so good, and the potato salad is amazing! The menu is great. We travel I 80 often and look for convenient places to call ahead for to-go lunch. I have tried them 4 times, and unfortunately, this will be the last. They consistently get the call-in orders wrong, and shame on me for not unwrapping my sandwiches to double-check. The first time I ordered a grilled cheese on gluten-free bread, opened it down the road.....on real bread. I like the ingredients of the Solano Spa, but try to get it on grilled sourdough bread, first time in was just toasted, yesterday it was plain bread. I specifically asked for buttered and grilled (as specified on other sandwiches on the menu). We had 4 sandwiches, sodas, and chips, and a tip, over $100. Their ingredents are good. What an awesome find! Driving home from Tahoe, hubby craved a sandwich, not subway or Quiznos, an honest real sandwich. In a world full of ho-hum sandwiches it is not any easy task. I yelped for a half hour while we drove towards home and found diggers. Right off the freeway and looking promising, we stopped. Greeted first thing and treated like old friends! We were so impressed by the level of costumer service! Hubby ordered the sandwich exactly as he wanted and upgraded to premium meats,, nice touch for a sandwich lover.. While our masterpieces were created we were offered samples of homemade chili and also homemade au jus!! Both delicious! What a friendly place. Our new sandwich spot! Doesn't look like much when you walk past and looked at it, but I was hungry and in need of a classic deli sandwich. When I opened the doors, I was taken back by the spaciousness and how clean the place looked. Additionally, the beer on tap piqued my interest considering it was a Monday afternoon. I refrained from asking, but they had enough soft drinks to suffice my thirst and taste. When it came to the sandwiches, I loved all of their suggested sandwiches and was delighted getting a bbq turkey Sando on Dutch Crunch. I am really so disappointed. I usually get a pretty good sandwich here and it's right around my house. The younger girl at the front desk was very nice and was going to make my sandwich. Requested extra meat and extra sauerkraut, and she said she would take care of it. Out of the back comes some guy who INSISTS he needs to make the sandwich and I wish he kept in the back. Very nice independent sandwich shop. Went over for lunch break from some work I am doing at Nut Tree Airport. Only about 5 min away. The staff behind the counter is very friendly. Great selection of hot and cold sandwiches plus normal deli sides. I had a California Cuban which is a hot sandwich and was delicious. They have a nice selection of about a half dozen beers on tap. I wasn't drinking because of work but this is definitely a place I would hit at the end of the day. This place has been a Vacaville staple for decades. Unfortunately, it has been bought and sold a few times recently. With every new owner, the place has slipped. I really miss the conversation and service from the ladies making sandwiches when it was still in the hands of the original owners. The last guy did a good job of "cleaning it up", but customer service lagged. The new owner seems to be okay hiring seemingly unkempt people for food service. I just got home with my sandwich and I am so pissed. I've ordered the Turkey Cranberry twice in the last 2 months. First time was fine but not enough cranberry. I don't like bacon and had it left off. Second time I ordered it and ordered extra cranberry., no bacon. It was killer with cranberry oozzing out! Almost too much but it was great. Today, omg, first off I forgot about the bacon, my fault, and asked for extra cranberry. I start eating it and I'm like first off it's like total mush....with nasty bacon. So I pull the bacon off. There is barely any cranberry, i mean like you could barely see any. Then I'm looking at the turkey meat. It was like they froze it and squeezed the water out or something because it was mashed and in chunks of balls. It looked like someone chewed it up and put it in my sandwich. This medium sized deli boasts a large variety of hot sammies, cold sammies and salads. In addition to the normal assortment of chips and drinks, Digger's boasts a large refrigerated case with goodies like deviled eggs to accompany your selection. The selection of goodies, meats, breads and cheeses is better than your average sammie shop, but for some reason the sammies just tasted average to me. I've had all kinds of samples of sammies from different delis/mom&pop shops/cafe's and the more infamous chains from all over the bay area/sac... I'm no sandwich connoisseur... but I do recognize meaty, tasty, gooey, delish hot messes ... and this was lacking in those categories. =( I ordered their garlic turkey special -- which incorporated a ranch garlic-ish condiment, 2-3ozs of thin deli turkey, couple slices of tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, no cheese... *shrug* no pizazz ... 6.95. I also picked up a side of potato salad ($1.09), which was GOOD! I liked that. The hubs ordered a large french dip (9.95) -- had about 4-5ozs of roast beef and a side of au jus. He was disappointed, if you've had Joe's then you'd understand why... (just look at our sammie pix =/ ) The only thing we did agree that was good was the soft french bread, friendly service, quaint mom&pop deli that's been open for nearly 30yrs in a very ghost-town like plaza. Having lived in Vacaville for so long it's only natural for me to hear about the local must eat places. They include, but are not limited to: Diggers Deli, Murillo's, Baldo's, and Pietro's etc... So since I've eaten at least once at all of those places except Diggers so far...It was bound to happen! Service: When I went in it was later in the day, about six pm, and there was only two female workers. Immediately the older woman asked if I wanted a sandwich, but because I've never been here before, I told her I was going to look first. I felt very rushed through the whole sandwich making process and thought that she had the "I can't wait to get out of work" attitude and was just counting down the seconds before I leave. Inside: There are chips by the entrance of the shop. At the end, by the cash register, there are three drink fridges--kind of like the ones you see at gas stations. It was clean, nothing special to add. Food: The sandwich was YUM! The only complaint was that my sour dough bread wasn't very sour doughy...it tasted like white bread to me, but it was hard on the outside and soft on the inside. The toppings were all very good, better quality than Subway...however, I had a tough time keeping the toppings between the bread. That was annoying. There are little side dishes in front of the sandwich making area. Cheesecake slices, deviled eggs, salads, etc. are some of the few things they have to offer. Except the desserts--which looked store bought--everything else looked pretty good and home-made. Overall: I think I would give them 3.5 stars if I had the option, but since I don't, I gave them four stars. Went in to grab a little lunch the other day. There is one lady at the counter who was so rude and put off by my asking how the tuna and chicken salad were prepared. (I ended up throwing away what I bought because it was like eating an entire onion and spices mixed with mayo). It wasn't as if they had numerous people in the deli, she was just legitimately rude. Digger's Deli is under new ownership! They've already some a few cosmetic changes inside (getting rid of the red fence that was on the ceiling above the counter) that has made a vast improvement! So much brighter and more inviting inside! The menu still offers the same sandwiches plus some new ones. They've added premium cut deli meats from Columbus. Today I had a regular sized #8- the Hot Harry, which is their pastrami sandwich, on whole wheat. A simple yet tasty sandwich! Price was a bit higher from the previous owners, but still good. I met one of the owners, Gigi, and she was very friendly and enthusiastic. She greeted every single one of her customers and explained the menu and any changes they noticed. I seriously never review badly on yelp because I like to give people a second (or even third) chance because I know everyone has off days. I have gone here about 6 or 7 times living in Vacaville. I absolutely love their food and it's great. But I will not be returning because of how unfriendly the staff is. They seem irritated if I'm ordering more than one sandwich every single time I come in. It wasn't just a one time thing and it has been over the phone and in person. The last time I went there I called in my order and the woman hung up on me right after I finished ordering and didn't say goodbye and was annoyed if I wanted anything special on any of my sandwiches. Small local business that has been around forever and is known across town. What's not to like? On top of that they give you $1 off for checking in on Yelp. I seriously wanted to love Diggers Deli but.... From outside, this sandwich shop doesn't look big at all. Located in the strip mall, you don't get the right impression until you walk in. However, there are tables scattered across the large dining room. The size is of about 2-3 regular Subway restaurants, fairly large for a deli with the deli counter running across. The decor is very homey: magazines, toys; you almost have a feeling you are visiting someone's house.... When we arrived for lunch the place was fairly busy, some 6 people waiting in line. They had a lunch special going with a cup of soup, 1/2 sandwich, and a drink for about $8. Not a super great deal but I don't mind paying for quality and leaving my $$ locally. I got Italian salami and minestrone. Up until now the rating was surely 4.5 stars as the customer service was awesome. However, once the the food was done, it was not that impressive. The french roll the sandwich came on was almost dry, tasted like it was left oxygenating for too long. The salami was OK (Columbus) and there was a lot of it, but the sandwich was on a small side, even for just a 1/2. The minestrone soup was OK but too salty for my taste. Overall everything tasted just a tad better than Subway. Considering the limited number of local, non-chain dining options in Vacaville it is likely I will give Diggers another try in the near future.
