    German chocolate cake
    Jan-marie V.

Did a pre order for my husbands birthday and his favorite is German Chocolate! While I went in there to pick up the cake I decided to order 2 breakfast sandwiches a breakfast burrito and a few of their other baked items!! We definitely will visit again. My husband loved his cake and his birthday breakfast burrito and my daughter and really enjoyed our sandwiches. I can't remember what the baked goods were called but I got this one roll that had delicious raspberry perseveres in it, it wasn't a donut but it was soft, warm not too sweet and delicious! The lady who helped me was super friendly and everyone else that worked their smiled and/or said hello to anyone that came in or they passed by.

Order German chocolate cake Thursday morning for Saturday pick up. $50 for a 2 layer round cake. The frosting is a mess. The rounds are not round. The layering is off. This looks like a rush job. The drizzle is pools on the top. It like the person who made this really didn't care. Thats ok, but reflect the lack of care in the price please.

    Best sandwiches ever!

Great pastries, great coffee, awesome sandwiches! Cinnamon rolls are the best, not too sweet, just perfect. Danishes are awesome. Dutch crunch bread that actually will crunch when toasted.

The service here is always a hit or miss with this place. Aside from that, I've become a fan of their Tuna Sandwich on Dutch Crunch. One single sandwich can definitely fill me up! I even tried their breakfast sandwich on jalapeno bread with some type of pepper jack cheese which was phenomenal. Come early in the morning (around fix or so) and the smell of fresh baked bread is to die for! If you're in the area, I'd prefer this place over Blimmpies down the street.

Their food is very tasty. My only complaint is they are a bit pricey. I will come back. Just not a frequently as if they were a bit cheaper.

I know I should have gotten something else from the menu, but the entree I had last time (Czech 'Svitchkova') was too good to pass up. The soup for the day was chicken noodle, so I went for that this time. Czech 'Svitchkova': This was exactly as I remembered it. I noticed from last time I got three pieces instead of two. The sauce is what made this dish for me. The meat was tough like I remembered it. The spetzel was deliciously cooked and the special berry compote was tart. Overall, I enjoyed this dish. My soup was a bit on the cold side though, so it was not as appealing to me. Still, happy to come back here again and enjoy my German fixings. Wishing the best for all the workers here.

We had the Jagerschnitzel and the Bratwurst dinners. The portions were huge and we had enough leftover for lunch the next day. They give you two very large pieces of Jagerschnitzel, which is breaded pork with mushroom gravy. The sides are what you would expect in a German restaurant - spaetzel, purple cabbage and a potato dish, often potato salad. The service was excellent and parking is ample in their own lot.

The menu features traditional Bavarian fare, and we started with the Bier Snack Platter, an appetizer board that came with a warm pretzel, braunschweiger (venison pate), salami, obatzda (Brie, Pilsner, and cream cheese spread), spicy peanuts, and pickled egg/veggies. The soft pretzel wasn't particularly authentic and lacked a chewy texture, but I was a fan of the slightly funky, creamy venison braunschweiger. From the selection of sausages, we tried the weisswurst (a white veal and pork sausage), a duck with Vermont cheese sausage, and a smoked Montana venison sausage. My favorite was definitely the non-traditional duck with cheese, which had a nice meaty flavor and unctuousness from the cheese. Finally, we had the Jägerschnitzel, a pan-fried pork cutlet topped with a wild mushroom cream sauce, and served with sides of sauerkraut, rotkohl (sweet braised red cabbage), and spätzle (egg noodles). My favorite side was the spätzle, which had been lightly pan-fried and had a nice caramelized, crispy texture. Overall, the food here was all decent, though most of the items weren't particularly fresh tasting or authentic. The duck sausage was a highlight, but I wouldn't go out of my way for the food here.

I wanted to like Brotzeit. It was my first visit, and I was genuinely looking forward to trying the…read morefood. Unfortunately, the experience was frustrating from start to finish. I ordered food to go, including the meat and pickled vegetable selection, pretzels, and cheese sauce. When I got home, I realized the cheese sauce was missing. I tried calling the restaurant multiple times, but no one answered the phone, so I had to drive all the way back to retrieve an item that should have been included in the first place. That ate up about 40 minutes of my evening. When I returned, I received a small apology, but no meaningful attempt to make things right -- no comp, no offer of a dessert, no gesture of goodwill. For a first-time customer who had to make a second trip because of the restaurant's error, that felt pretty disappointing. The pretzel situation was also confusing and left a bad taste. The menu lists "add a pretzel" for $3 under the meat and pickled vegetable selection. When I ordered, the server told me the pretzel came with the meal. Based on that, I reasonably assumed that if I ordered an additional pretzel, the extra charge would be $3. Instead, I was charged both $3 and another $6.50 for the extra pretzel. When I asked about it later, I was told the pricing was structured that way for gluten-free customers, but that was not explained when I ordered. The menu and verbal explanation did not match the final charge, and it felt misleading. To make matters worse, the house-made pretzel itself was disappointing. There wasn't even any salt on it. At a German restaurant, a pretzel should be one of the easiest things to get right: salty, chewy, browned, and satisfying. This was not that. Between the missing cheese sauce, the unanswered phone, the extra drive, the confusing charges, the lack of a meaningful service recovery, and the underwhelming pretzel, this was not a good first impression. I left feeling taken advantage of rather than welcomed as a new customer. I understand mistakes happen. What matters is how a restaurant handles them. In this case, Brotzeit had a clear opportunity to turn an annoying mistake into a decent customer service moment, and they didn't. I'm actually pretty upset writing this review. I forked over a lot of money, I'm and I dont have a huge going out budget, I work caregiving and I sometimes want to give myself a treat, and this whole interaction really set my evening off poorly. I ate later than I intended which cuts into my sleep, which in turn does NOT set me up for having the energy and mental strength to do my job, and I actually feel MISLED by the menu and explanation by the waitstaff and the apology and nothing else, no acknowledgment for the time wasted, and not even a "what can I do, let's make it right." Total. Disappointment. Yeah I am NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER!! I shall NOT be giving ONE THIN DIME MORE OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY to this business!! They haven't returned my voicemail regarding my bad experience. They obviously don't care. And the cheese spread I did get smelled spoiled the day after. Didnt want to eat it.

The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a place like this as it is lively but not loud, cozy but not cramped, and always buzzing with good energy, from the staff through to most of the patrons on any given night. The menu is a greatest-hits tour of German comfort food. The deviled eggs are a must to start your meal and the wienerschnitzel is my personal go‑to as it is crispy, moist, and so flavorful every time I've had it. The jägerschnitzel is another standout if you are feeling something a little lighter and saucier as it rich and savory in all the right ways, and the sausages are always banging and perfect alongside a big stein of beer. It's the kind of food that feels made for long conversations and slow sipping. What really elevates Suppenküche, though, is the people. The staff are super friendly and clearly know their stuff, always ready with a beer recommendation or a menu suggestion and the patrons tend to match that vibe; if you end up at the bar or sharing a table, which is pretty common if you come with a small group, you're likely to find yourself chatting with someone new before long. There's honestly no better way to make new friends in SF than bonding over schnitzel and a great German beer at Suppenküche.

Our pretzel arrived quickly, followed by my Jaegerschnitzel. Then they completely forgot my wife's Fisch and Chips and just started taking care of the wedding party. Thank goodness we had the pretzel, because my wife's lunch wasn't served until I had finished my lunch and we had to inquire about her order twice. They did comp her lunch, but then she hardly ate any because it was time for us to go. BTW, my schnitzel was thin and cardboard like. The only tasty bit was the mushroom gravy. A totally uninspiring visit and we most likely will not be back.
