We really enjoyed dining at Dija Mara. If you are a picky eater, you may want to avoid this place. All of the food is very unique with distinct flavours. The pork belly skewers were our favourite of the things we ordered. The ambiance is moody, it is dark in the restaurant with small candles on each table. Interesting art on the walls. The service was okay. We came on a weekend so it was kind of busy. We put in an order for the beef tartare after a few of our dishes came out and I think the waitress forgot to put it in. They eventually did get it to us and gave us a discount on the final bill which was really kind. There was no automatic gratuity for our party of two. I love Balinese food. I've been to that beautiful island a couple times and focused on eating a delicious meal for every single meal. Dija Mara truly lives up to that delicious cuisine, delivering inspired dishes that are packed with flavor (and occasionally heat) in a way that's both authentic and elevated. The restaurant itself is a smaller and very chic spot, with pleasant service that may get a bit overloaded at times when it's hopping. We showed up at our reservation time and had to wait ~15 minutes for a seat, which obviously isn't the end of the world and was likely the fault of single table not eating fast enough in a small restaurant. Once we were seated the staff was extremely nice and fast. We tried half of the menu and loved every bit of it. Their version of Mie Goreng was truly fantastic, and we also loved both the chicken and pork skewers. I'd say their beef rendang was very good, but given how amazing the rest of the food was, it wasn't as stand-out. We also started with and loved the Roti, and the Beef Tartare was very good as well. Dija Mara has been on my bookmarks for so long and I only regret not coming here sooner! Came here for brunch and was blown away by the food. The pandan jam toast was so delicate and buttery soft without being too oily or sweet. The Niçoise salad had generous amounts of fresh albacore tuna that wasn't dry or over cooked. The tofu rendang was very umami and comforting with bursts of different flavors and textures. My partner and I were excited to try this spot out, especially because we're new to the SD area and have been looking forward to finding some good Asian food. I'm new to reviewing but our experience was bad enough for me to leave a review. Upon getting to the front door, the server said "Hi" and that's about it. It was awkward, and my partner and I both mentioned to each other after sitting down that it felt like the server didn't expect for us to have a reservation. Moving onto the food, we got the ceviche, nasi goreng, and beef rendeng. Ironically, the ceviche came out last. Beef rendeng: All the "flavor" was on the outside of the meat. Upon first bite, my partner and I didn't say anything. Then both admitted that it tasted dry. We aren't even major food critics, and it was unfortunate given that she has actually had beef rendeng before and said I shouldn't base how good it can taste off of this particular serving. We didn't even finish the plate. Nasi goreng: Our fave of the three! However, what made it taste great was that it reminded me of a home cooked meal made by friends' mom. It was nostalgic in tasting, but it wasn't necessarily anything out of the ordinary. What surprised us both was how spicy it was. If you like spice, you'd really enjoy it. Ceviche: Presentation felt fancy, but it was super salty. Also the ceviche was hidden under these cassavas I think? Looking at the ceviche itself, it look really unappetizing. There was nothing that wowed us about it. Our drinks were cute and simple: sparkling water & and dija's soda. We told the server who gave us our check (different than the one who took our order) that the rendeng was not good. She said she'd go and tell the kitchen and we expected her to come back to follow up with us, but there was nothing. Ironically, there was another server who gave us the check back after running the payment (before we added our tip), and my partner and I joked that we had 3 servers. It was a quick experience, probably about 25 minutes overall for this date night. No one even thanked us or greeted us when leaving, which feels like the bare minimum to expect at a higher end place. Excellent food, mediocre service and wines. The food is amazing and innovative. It's the best restaurant food-wise in Oceanside. We had 6 dishes, which were all unique from each other and all excellent - ceviche, spicy noodles, spicy eggplant (please add that it's spicy on the menu), chicken skewers, pork belly skewers, and "pot de creme" dessert. They were all full of a variety of flavors. You can see why this place got a Michelin star. The pork belly skewers and eggplant were the highlights for us. However, the service was mediocre. We had to flag down the wait staff long after our drinks ran out, the dessert took a very long time to come out, and the staff would ask us questions but walk away before we could answer. That happened a few times, and it was rude. The restaurant was fairly busy but not that busy. The beers and cocktails were excellent, but if you want to drink wine and aren't an avid natural wine fan, I recommend bringing your own and paying corkage. The wine list is very limited. Also FYI it has a very modern, hip vibe with graffiti, brick walls, etc. Take that for what it is, it's just a different experience from most high-end restaurants. Loved the curry roti, all the skewer flavors, tartare, nasi goreng, cocktails were both unique and easy on the eyes. Fantastic Indonesian "fusion" worth the hour drive through traffic!!!! We started with two cocktails - cardinal sin and pandan-y dropper. Both were an interesting mix of flavors and textures (former having egg white and latter having a crisp garnish). For entrees, which look small but we're filling, we tried the lamb skewers, cereal prawns, and mie goreng. Lamb was grilled to perfection and came with a great peanut sauce. The mie goreng had a nice chew and packed some welcoming spice. The star had to be the prawns - the crunch from the cereal and tenderness of the seafood, flavors melding together in an amazing buttery sauce. The sauce is what makes the dish outstanding and unique, a must try here. Everything was full of flavor Let's not forget the service. I've been meaning to go here for quite some time now and I finally found an excuse to do so. Met up with some friends here on a Saturday night. We did make reservations a week out, which was very easy to do online. The friends came early and they were seated right away, which was nice. There is a small parking lot next to it but there's also street parking. The place is small but it has cool artwork and nice ambiance. The servers were very friendly and definitely check up on you and make sure that you have enough drinks and whatever else you need. They also gave us enough time to check out the menu. We ordered so many things and for the price we paid, after taxes and fees, it was decently priced for the quality of the food (ended up to $70 a person). My friends did order alcoholic drinks and they said it was strong and nicely flavored. Not sure what they ordered. The food we ordered were the pork belly skewers and the chicken skewers. The chicken skewers were nicely flavored and not too salty. I preferred the pork. It was a good meat and fat ratio and the flavor was decadent and I loved the squeeze of lime and the bits of mint. The roti excellent. It was fluffy and crispy at the same time. We preferred the vegetarian dip over the lamb dip. The lamb dip didn't have that much flavor to it but the vegetarian dip was so so good. I wish there was more of it. Oh, we also ordered the shrimp chips. It's a little more crunchy than I prefer but the pairing of the sambal was excellent. It was salty, spicy and a little bit of sweetness. It was a great balance of flavors. We also ordered the laksa. It had plenty of noodles, which was cooked well, not too soft. The coconut flavor shined through, along side the seafood flavor. The poached egg made it more creamy and the shrimp was excellent and quite large, also not chewy at all. We also ordered the gado gado, which was great because it was a break from the hot foods. It had mushrooms, broccoli, potato, carrots, tofu and probably other vegetables that I didn't realize was there. The peanut flavor was subtle. This was a great break from the richer meals. The charred broccolini was also good but there were some pieces that were a little more salty than I wanted it to be. I think it might be because of the anchovy flavor. If it wasn't that salty, this would have been excellent because it was crunchy and it was satisfying to eat some vegetables. Another item that we ordered was the mie goreng. They warned us that it was spicy abd we were glad for the warning. It was filling and the noodles had a good chew. The flavor was a great balance of salty, and spicy. I don't remember the chicken because all I could remember is the nice chew on the noodles and the spice. The final item we did order was the beef short rib rendang. The egg was cooked well with that jammy center and that's all I tasted cause I was full and I don't eat beef. But my friends said it was flavored well, the beef was tender and the rice was cooked well. As you can tell we ordered the a lot on the menu. It was a great variety. We are glad that we went and we are happy we tried almost everything. It was overall a great experience and I would definitely try it again but like a brunch menu or something. Absolutely worst service ever. Came in for a birthday and besides having servers run food we had 0 service. Complained to a manager and then all was said was "that is how it is sometimes". Took 14 minutes for a birthday dessert and all the server said was "here's your birthday dessert" and rudely dropped it. They held our card for 20 minutes and server disappeared. And we had a reservation for 7:15 and didn't get sat till 7:45. We get that it gets busy and people stay past their time but we were "offered a beer" for the inconvenience then were charged for it. Poor communication, poor service, 0 hospitality. Will not be coming back. 0 compensation besides the server "taking care of the birthday dessert". Before I begin, it saddens me to write this review. This was one of my favorite new restaurants. . ..until last week. My girlfriend drove from OC after listening to me rave about Dija Mara. This was my third visit within the past month and a half. I cannot get past their wine list. I understand their wines are natural and as much as I respect this, the wines have never even been considered 'good', and this is coming from all of those whom have dined with me (no repeats). The last time we brought our own wine, which is fine from time to time for a special occasion, but the reason should never be because their wine offering is unappealing. Corkage is $25. They offer only beer and wine. Secondly, and oh, so sadly. . .. the ceviche we had the first two visits was by far the best we have ever had, and this is saying a lot. Unfortunately, the ceviche offering changed. Before ordering it, I was informed that it was also "very good". Not. There was nothing good about it. Lackluster taste and far too salty, which is saying a lot coming from someone who enjoys her salt. Major disappointment to put it mildly. I was asked if I liked it and was brutally honest in my reply. "Not good and way too salty". Wasn't expecting it, but no concession on our bill. Thankfully, the spicy noodles and the bread did not disappoint. Unless I have a hankering for spicy noodles, sadly, I am not sure when I will be returning. It does have a bar, but the place just feels like a bar if you turn the lights down. Anywho, we ordered like half the menu to try out the different foods. My favorites included the beef tartare, chicken thigh skewers and the fried chicken with the chicharron sprinkled on the rice. Some of my least favorites were the gu choy, ceviche, noodles and the rice dish. Some flavorings were too salty for our palette. Ambiance, wayyy too loud. A great and easy location right off PCH in Oceanside. Definitely need to make a reservation if you want to be seated at a table, if you don't have a reservation you get to sit at their bar top. Plenty of open seating, although it was "reserved". Good for small groups. Street parking only, but there are spots in front of the restaurant. We started out with the grilled roti, J Brix "pino gris", and Es okay "white" white blend. The curry dipping sauces for the flatbread were delicious and the flatbread itself was warm and very fresh. The pino gris was definitely funky, dry and had hints of berry. The es okay was okay, pretty tart and refreshing. I prefer reds normally and did enjoy the pino gris more compared to the es okay. My partner and I split our charred eggplant, pork belly skewers, and Nasi goreng. He loved the eggplant and I loved the nasi goreng. The eggplant was very filling and the fried shallots gave a great texture and flavor to the dish. The fried rice was nice and crispy with an over easy egg to break open over it. The chicken was cooked well in the rice and wasn't overly chewy. We enjoyed the pork belly skewers, and the pork belly melted in your mouth. I typically don't enjoy peanut sauces, but the peanut aioli was delightful. A great add to the plate. Definitely will be trying more in the future. read more

Interesting southeast asian fusion restaurant located on the main street in Oceanside. We came on a Sunday for brunch around 12 and had a reservation for 4 people but probably could have just walked in. We tried a bunch of stuff! Tartine, thai sausage hash, kaya jam toast, nasi goreng, grilled roti, spicy eggplant bowl and the short rib rendang. Portion sizes were bigger than I was thinking they would be but expensive for what you get. The amazing: - tartine: really good flavor with the seasonal fruit, the ricotta added creaminess and the toast was perfectly soft and chewy. - kaya jam toast: the jam is super tasty! Bright green color which comes from the pandan leaves. Way overpriced at $14 for four small toast points - grilled roti: the bread was soooo good. Good chew and flavor. It didn't even need the dipping sauces but they were good. Worth getting both to try. Lamb jus had a real depth of flavor. The meh: - nasi goreng: it is what it is. Nothing super exciting in terms of flavors. - spicy eggplant bowl: appreciated the different flavors and textures with the cheese and eggplant but it still ate flat - thai sausage hash: potatoes were the star of this! Super crispy. The sausage was very few pieces and a bit too crumbly for me - short rib rendang: expected so much flavor from this but it ended up just being a very meaty flavor and a nondescript brown sauce. The meat was cooked well though. Overall, hit and miss. Worth trying but I don't know how soon I'd be back. Also, almost every dish at brunch had an egg on it. First came here a year or two ago and found it quite decent. Returned recently and now it's just very disappointing food for the price. Everything relied on sauces, which is great when made properly. However, this was salt city from beginning to end. From the roti and accompanying curry dip (BOTH were too salty, believe it or not) to the mie goreng, it was as if multiple people had salted the dish without telling each other. The only decent dish was the pork belly skewers, but that's if you are willing to pay that much for four bite-sized pieces of it. I've read other complaints about the salt content on here and wonder if it has to do with a particular chef. The last time we were here it was not a problem whatsoever. I get the aesthetic they're going for, but without being able to execute on the flavors now, this is just a novelty place to go to say you've been. On the service side, wait staff was WAY too pushy on the drinks. If one declines politely the first and second time, you'd think they wouldn't ask the fourth or fifth time within the first 20-30 minutes of sitting down. Dija Mara already had a notable reputation before it was added to the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand list last year. A group of us recently took a road trip to visit this Balinese-inspired restaurant in Oceanside. They don't have a dedicated parking lot, however plenty of curbside spaces were available along South Coast Highway. I wasn't expecting the venue to be an industrial bar, but it made sense after I had eaten at its offshoot in North Park several months ago. That place was also a bar setup with a dark ambiance. Our reservation was at 6:15 pm, and pretty much all the tables and bar space were occupied when we arrived. The dinner menu was available via a QR code. Eighteen small plates, two sides, and one dessert were listed. The prices of the shareables ranged from $10 to $40. We decided to split the following six items which were brought out in this order... * Nasi Goreng: Wok-fried rice with bay shrimp, confit chicken, and a sunny side up egg * Cereal Prawns: Tiger prawns in a sauce with curry leaves, palm sugar cream, and cured egg yolk * Beef Short-Rib Rendang: Short rib seasoned with Indo ferments along with a pickled egg, and coconut rice * Grilled Roti - Flatbread with a lamb jus curry * Pork Belly Skewers - Meat seasoned with black garlic, sambal matah, peanut aioli, and mint * Charred Broccolini - Stalks flavored with black nut sambal and fried anchovies My favorites were the rendang and the skewers mainly because they were the least salty of the dishes. The Nasi Goreng started us off with some latent spiciness. The broccolini was probably forgotten until we reminded our server. The leaves of the vegetable were the saltiest portion of the meal which was disappointing. Dishes are recommended to be enjoyed family style. We had a party of 4 and were recommended to order 5-7 dishes. The menu helpfully listed smaller items to larger items. I think a party of 4 was the perfect size because many of the dishes we ordered could be evenly split. Execution and flavors were hit or miss. For the hits, I enjoyed the garlic roti (soft and very garlicky), pork belly skewers (nicely rendered fatty pieces), and the short ribs. Otherwise the other dishes were way too salty or full of spices and difficult to eat. This was especially true for the charred broccolini where the stems were quite good but the leaves soaked up too much of the flavoring and left my mouth dry. We love Dija Mara, and it's our go-to spot for visitors, because these are flavors you pretty much can't find anywhere else (even if you're lucky enough to have another Indonesian restaurant nearby). We've been for brunch twice and dinner several times. We always start with the roti, and other standouts include the skewers of all type, mie goreng, yu choy, and eggplant, but everything we've had is great! My only complaint: the first time we had Dija Mara, we got takeout during the heart of the pandemic, and they had this pork rib with a sticky, sweet, spicy glaze, that was literally one of the best things I've ever eaten. Im salivating now as I write this overdue review 4 years later. But I haven't seen it on the menu since (and I check often). If anyone at Dija Mara sees this, please please please bring those ribs back! read more

This is our second visit to Dija Mara. We first visited here about 10 mos ago. Our first visit blew us away, especially my sister in law. We were really impressed! There were just explosions of flavors in our mouths with everything we ate. I don't know what happened, but I can't find the photos of our last visit on Yelp and I post everything. This last visit, we weren't as impressed. What happened? The flavors with some dishes we ordered were lacking. Did they lose their best chef/s or weren't they working tonight? The Nasi Goreng was good as well as the Mie Goreng. The peanut sauce served with the Roti I wasn't a fan of. It was too watery and didn't coat the Roti at all after dipping. The sauce served with the chicken skewers I wasn't a fan of either. It was more of a chunky paste than a sauce. The charred eggplant dish was OK, but I expected more flavor. The Yu Choy was good. The whole fish dish only had the tamarind glaze on the top side and absolutely nothing on the bottom half. So it was just a plain fried fish on the bottom half. The Urap salad served atop the fish was good. What was leftover after eating the top half helped with the flavor of the bottom half. The fish in my opinion wasn't worth the $54 price. It was good, but I would not order it again. If I could rate this place 3 1/2 stars I would, but no half star options are available; thus, the four star rating. This was supposed to be the highlight of our culinary journey this trip. The WOW factor is gone. My questions to them: 'What happened? What changed between last year July 2022 and now, May 2023?!
