I'm so happy I made it to Diljan, an Afghan pastry shop that opened a few months ago in Brooklyn Heights. I tried the rosewater and cardamom pastry stuffed with saffron called the saffron shah. It was crescent shaped, tasted floral and delicate, and like everything else here, it wasn't too sweet which I loved. One of several showstoppers was the sheer pira, a laminated pastry filled with Afghan milk fudge and pistachios. When you cut it in half, the interior is gorgeous. You might expect milk fudge to be rich and heavy, but it was surprisingly light with touches of rosewater, cardamom, and pistachios. Also tried the Afghan naan, which are their rippable flatbreads that can be sold with two different types of dips. I opted for the cherry, which was fresh and not sweetened, which balanced out the sweetness of the other pastries nicely. I enjoyed pairing this with their cardamom chai, the perfect complement to everything. Seating is very limited and this is mostly a takeout operation. But if it's a nice day, just eat right out front. That's what I did and it was perfect. The owner also runs Dunya, one of my fave Afghan restaurants in the city (it's in Midwood), and Little Flower Cafe in Astoria. There's a lot of pedigree here, and they really know what they're doing. Highly recommend.

As a fan of Little Flower Cafe, I was very excited to check out Diljan. The space is a little small, but beautifully designed and quite modern. As someone with a tree nut allergy, I was initially worried I would only be able to try the roghani but the staff were so helpful and recommended the saffron shah ($10) and the fig and pomegranate molasses roll ($8), both of which are nut-free (the saffron shah does have almond slivers on top for decoration). The saffron shah was simply gorgeous, laminated into a very beautiful and structured crescent, dipped into white chocolate at both ends. I did find the saffron pastry cream to be incredibly forward, perhaps a little too much for my preference. The fig and pomegranate molasses roll was sinfully sticky and featured little pieces of fig which added a nice textural component to the flaky pastry. I'd really like to return to try their savory options soon!

This Afghan bakery is from the same owners as Little Flower Cafe, so their popularity follows. The shop is small with some seating, although I'd suggest just walking down the block to the piers. The place was busy, but service was quick. I ordered the Saffron Shah ($10), Halwa Sticky Bun ($8), and Lamb Samosa ($8). I like how everything was packaged in a brown, clear box for easy serving. I ended up enjoying these over at a park nearby and found the pastries to be quite messy and sticky, so make sure to grab some napkins. Unfortunately, I did find that they all had soggy bottoms probably from all the fillings. The flavor was all good though, especially the savory one though the lamb portion was tiny. There's lots of filling in the saffron shah and I do appreciate the layers created in this. The sticky bun was just ok despite this being one of the popular items. Overall, nice spot to grab some pastries to enjoy at the Brooklyn piers on a nice day. There's some unique items with an Afghan twist, which you don't find often.

10/10 bakery!!!!!! First of all, I want to say that the cream cheese and bread is so so so good. I got the beef bacon and scallion cream cheese and it was some of the best cc I've ever had! The lamb croissant was also really good!! I appreciate all the savory pastries / breads they have to offer. BUT the sweet pastries is where it's at. I mean the halva pastry was so good my mouth is watering as I'm typing up this review. It was DELICIOUS. The pastries are also so beautiful! Perfect treat to bring to literally anyone! The service was also amazing! I love their cardamom syrup and they allowed me to purchase some to take home. Hopefully they start bottling this up!

Came in on a Thursday afternoon, slightly concerned there would be no pastries but that was not an issue!! Picked up my treats, taking recommendations from staff and was in and out very quickly. It is a small space inside though so definitely a grab and go with limited sitting area. Across the board, the sugar levels of these pastries are perfect as is the dough. I definitely feel more inclined to try their bread as I'm sure it'll be a knockout. Favorite pastry was definitely the Fig and Pomegranate Molasses pastry, I will be back for it. Would 100% recommend warming it. The Lamb Samosa was also good, should also be warmed, but not necessarily something I'll go out of my way for. The Sheer Pira was the only disappointment in the group, this one is definitely for serious pistachio lovers, but I still appreciated the chance to try something new. Maybe I would prefer the chocolate version?

I got the sheer pira and I would come here again for it. The cream wasn't overly sweet, the bread itself was soft and flakey. The staff was also helpful with recommendations and any questions we had. There was a line but it goes by quick.

It's like the new year began and this bakery blew up on the socials!! But hey, I love to see a new local bakery getting love. Loves: + Yummy baked goods. Loved the saffron shah ($10) and enjoyed the halwa sticky bun ($8) + Location near BBP is nice, especially in warmer weather + Lovely staff moving people through as fast and kindly as they could + They're the only Afghan bakery I know here My notes if you go: - Only open Thursday to Sunday! - They do sell out, maybe by 1pm on a weekend - There is little seating. The bench inside can fit 4-5 people while the two ledges outside fit about the same. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would surely come back!

Saffron shah had a subtle floral flavor, well-filled and not too sweet. I honestly preferred pistachio chocolate chip cookie though for the pistachio and it was just okay. Maybe I need to give it another shot or try other items.

Came on a cold, snowy day after our pilates class, and this place was popping! I was honestly just curious to visit, but ended up so happily surprised by how delicious their pastries were! So glad to have this new addition in the neighborhood

Incredible new bakery owned and operated by the owner of little flower cafe. Making Afghan breakfast items and bread. I tried the panja the traditional Afghan bread and it comes with a choice of dip which I opted for the halal beef bacon and scallion. As an Afghan I was amazed by how good both were. The bread came in two pieces and had a great texture for dipping, the dip itself was incredibly flavorful and you get your moneys worth of bacon. The Sheer pira was thick (think of a cheese danish) and surrounded with the light crust of the danish. Absolute perfection. I also tried the Afghan chai and it tasted juts like home... everything was incredible and one of the new burgeoning spots for breakfast. You will see me here weekly. Hours are a bit interesting they are closed mon-Wednesday and open all other days from 7 am until 4 pm.

    The sticky bun. Absolutely delicious!

TL;DR version- Some high highs and some very low lows. Hot Figs was a fun app. By a mile, the soups…read morewere the favorites, so I would recommend the Pepián or Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo. Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection I was at this unique Guatemalan (ish) restaurant a while back with one of my groups. I said "ish" because the menu has dishes from all over, ranging from sandwiches to BBQ ribs to Guatemalan and Mexican soups. It's out there, and even though not everything works that well, it's fun, and if you can't find something you want to order here, you probably shouldn't go out to restaurants. There was also live jazz music that night, which was loud but nice to listen to. Since it was happy hour, a bunch of us got drinks. I went with a maracuya margarita, which was decent; someone else had a jalapeño margarita, someone had a beer, and someone had a mojito. There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist.

Every table has a placemat with crayons which is such a fun way to keep kids and adults entertained. The food was delicious and tasted fresh, living up to their messaging on sourcing local food. We ordered the egg katsu sandwich and the eggs rothko. The sandwich was very well made with a nice crisp panko crusting that didnt feel heavy on the oil, and yet still managed to have a light airy egg inside. The eggs rothko was buttery and flavorful but still managed to not feel too heavy. The broiled tomatos on the side were a nice touch to contrast the egg and toast from the main dish. Overall I enjoyed this place and would love to come back to try more dishes. The vibe was friendly and welcoming, making it the perfect weekend brunch spot.
