At first we were thinking it is not rat poo but after carefully looking at it, that was something I was not going to put in my mouth and take the risk. Last Thursday, a friend and I finished target practice at Jackson Arms in South San Francisco and were on our way back to San Francisco for lunch. We decided to try something new (at least for me) and headed over to the Dim Sum King located at Skyline Plaza. This shopping area is anchored by the Asian market - Ranch 99. My friend had been here in the past and said that the weekends are extremely busy, but since it was about 1:30 PM on a weekday, it wouldn't be so bad. Parking is easy and we were seated right away. The restaurant was only about 10% full and thus service was pretty good. We decided to order dim sum from their menu. Since my friend had been here before, I let him order. We had hot tea for $1 per person. We ordered the following at $2.80 per plate - pork dumpling (siu mai), steamed chicken feet, pan-friend turnip cake, steamed beef balls, and finally for $3.30 per plate steamed shrimp dumplings. The food was good, though chicken feet are not one of my favorites. This is a better value than some of the sit-down SF places located in the Richmond District. Certainly, if I am in the area, I would this place again, though it is probably better to come during off hours and especially avoid the weekend mornings. read more

So I have this dream...That one day, I can satisfy my dim-sum cravings by simply getting into my car, starting the engine, and going to a drive-thru window and ordering sticky rice, pork buns, and mango pudding, regardless of the time of day. I mean, common! 11am to 2pm!? What if it's football season!? Do I dare go dim-sum-less on Sundays!? Anyways, the dim-sum here is okay. Not the best but name another restaurant near the peninsula that serves it all day and all night until the wee hours of hmm, was it 12am? I forget, but they close pretty late. Ton Kiang serves dim-sum all day too but it's also more expensive and deep down Geary. So until someone opens a dim-sum drive in (hmm, I think I'm gonna look into doing this...better patent it while I can) or you know when that ice cream guy walks around the neighborhood ringing a bell for the kids to come running out? picture an old chinese lady pushing around a cart of dim-sum around the block! There are two 'king' restaurants in this plaza: Dim Sum King and Porridge King. I think this just results from a fixation with the word King (or Wang) in all Chinese titles of any kind. I may be wrong though. I have gone to this place a couple times and have enjoyed the food each time. Can't remember what it is called but the tofu roll type dish was delicious. I can't think of anything we ordered that was bad. Great jiaozi (dumplings). There wasn't too much crowd either. Very pleasant atmosphere and decorations inside. read more

Decent place to get your dim sum fix. Not the greatest and even has some disappointing dishes, but it'll do when you're in a bind. The baked BBQ pork bun is average at best. The turnip cake wasn't bad but could have been pan fried a bit more. The beef rice noodle roll was actually pretty good. Siu mai was good and much larger than I had expected. The shrimp dumpling was a little starchy, but flavor wise, it was decent. The glutinous rice was decent too. Note that this place is not a cart style restaurant. Even so, if you're craving some quick dim sum that's cheap, Dim Sum King is worth a look. They do have other large Chinese dishes, but they're a little pricier than most other Chinese places, so I'd probably never order those. read more

Took my sister to this restaurant for lunch. It's different. You don' t see the items, so you have to select it from a list like ordering sushi. If you don't know what you want, the server can help you decide. The good thing is that the items are made fresh and come piping hot. The bad thing is that the items are all brought out at different times. Once they bring it out, they circle the quantity so you know what is still left . My wife and sister liked it and it was so-so for me. I still like the old way of choosing your dish from the cart. read more

I love dim sum and I love the fact that this place serves really good, hot, tasty dim sum off a menu that does not require us waiting for a cart to roll around or deal with cart-pushing wait-staff not speaking the King's English asking us to choose from mystery steaming baskets without us understanding anything they say. Dim Sum King has wait staff that speak English and have paper menus that make it easy to select our individualized feast without it costing very much. Just a few carts that serve jook, but there are still some that carry and offer special plates. So we had a great Sunday Dim Sum feast here today. We arrived just after 11 AM and there was still parking to be found in the parking lot and there was almost no wait. We enjoyed lots of shrimp dishes, the ubiquitous sui mai, and even the sticky rice in Lotus Leaf, and finally the obligatory custard cups. They all were very good to excellent in both quality and taste, for about $14 a piece. This is definitely my go to dim sum place. read more

We went on a Tuesday night. I don't know if they normally have cart service, but they didn't have it this time. I kind of like the cart service because part of Dim Sum is the atmosphere, but I can understand why, for practicality reasons, a restaurant would not provide cart service for dinner guests. Service was, of all things, slow. The restaurant wasn't too full, but it sure took a while to get my "ha gou" and "siu mai". As for taste? Dim Sum is Dim Sum is Dim Sum. It's supposed to be cheap and greasy. It was a bit pricier here than a Chinatown joint, but what are you gonna do? 3 stars because: - Ample parking - it's in an Asian plaza. I'm starting to notice a trend in all my posts with regards to parking ratings, but if you live in the City, that understand why this is so important. - It's not Koi Palace. I hate the Koi Palace wait and I hate Koi Palace prices. This family style dining hall was pretty nice in it's own down home kind of way sort of like grandma's house on Thanksgivings with a lot of people eating and talking with the addition of a wait staff. I guess we avoided the rush by getting to the Dim Sum King about 11am because after we sat down the waiting area was flowing out the door. Ok at our table I didn't feel like a King just yet because Mei our waitress slapped down a menu where we had to circle or number how many orders of a item we wanted. I'm sorry her name wasn't Mei that was so Rush Hour of me; but there are a lot of Mei's out there. One of the nice things is that the food does come pretty quickly like to and 3 items at a time. Now thats when I started to feel like a King again. shrimp and chicken dim sum, shrimp meatballs(kind of bland) spicy chicken wings, pan fried noodle with a seafood gravey and yeah buddy the best thing was this spicy something served with rice and I love rice. I'm so Asian without being Asian. Not that all asian people love rice I'm just saying. So with a table of pretty good food my Kingliness and manhood started to return after it was so savagely taken from and I actually forgot about that night all together. X.O. sauce rice noodle rolls. Pretty good because I love rice noodle rolls, but I think it's too strong flavored for me. Cilantro rice noodle rolls. I never had it before and it was good but I guess it can be a hit or miss depending on whether you like cilantro. I like the ones on the bottom better because they'er drenched in soy sauce! NOM NOM! Pan-fried turnip cake. Eh it was okay, a little too mushy though. I like how it wasn't burnt to a crisp. I think I like it steamed better, but not too many places have that. Shrimp dumplings. They dumpling fillings were yums but I didn't like how the dumpling wrapper was mushy, I wish it was more chewy. Pan-fried chive dumplings. Yummy in my tummy goodness! Came here the day after going to Hung To in South city. The food was just ok. You order from a sheet of paper and they bring them out instead of going around in carts or trays. We had siu Mai, chicken feet, fried taro, tripe, this other dumplings dish (not the same "other dumplings dish" at Hung To)...bill came out to be about the same as Hung To. The decor was weird. The ceiling is covered with fake vines and the tables and chairs are bare wood. Shabby green carpet. Meh. Probably won't go out of my way to come here again read more

Dim-Sum always fresh and hot from the kitchen. Really enjoy dining here. I can name all my favorite dishes but I won't cuz then I'll just be listing the entire menu. The desserts are also delicious too, especially the custard filled pineapple crusted bun. Yum-o! The service is here is great. Nice folks. This place ain't the carting kind, you tally what you want on a paper. The wait is not too bad on the weekends but parking can be a pain as the plaza where Dim Sum King is located has many eateries. Better than average, less than perfect. It's good, just not the best. A perk about this place is that they ask you what kind of tea you want. I still always get jasmine because I don't stray from the norm, but it's always nice to know you have options. But where else can you find dim sum at 9 night?! The price is pretty good. The establishment could be cleaner, but it's still better than your local bakery. The wait for the food is longer than fair, but it's made to order so at least you know it hasn't been hanging around. Good luck finding parking though. It is a man eat man world out there. People will literally get out of their car to fight for parking. And here's a quick tip, there is a huge illegal spot to park right next to the last pull in space outside the restaurant. If you park it like it's a spot and give enough room for cars to still pass, you can sometimes get away with it. If you get caught, the rent-a-cops only give you a warning citation that they've written down your plates and they'll tow next time. But that's why I've switched cars every time I eat there now. read more

I am not a dim sum connoisseur. However, I do love dim sum and appreciate when I can easily order off a dim sum menu, especially if there are pictures. This is probably why I love Dim Sum King. The menu and ordering process is simple and easy. Simply easy. Easily simple. The menu is in English and there are pictures of the popular dishes. You just mark which ones you want, and the quantity of it. I can comfortably dine here without being confused! The quality of food is high. Everything is steaming hot and fresh. And I love how dim sum is served all day. This place is very popular, especially on weekends. Expect a 20+ minute wait if you're in a large group. read more

They let you order the food off a paper so you don't need to be intimidated by those grandma cart ladies that can't speak english. I never knew how expensive dim sum was since they're just small plates? Oh well.. good thing I don't eat it every day. People are still talking about the rat? I wish I was there to see it... It sounds like it would have been funny/unsanitary. But I would have been put off by it. Lines are never too long. Even though there are a lot of people, the wait goes by really fast. One time we called in, and they let us get a number, just from us calling in!! We estimated our arrival time to be .. 10 minutes.. (lies) Unfortunately they skipped us.. This place is actually really good. My fiance and his family come here pretty often since we all live close by. Service is whatever, food is decent. I'm finally getting to write a review on this place, JUST BECAUSE of yesterday's experience. My family and I went for breakfast for some yummy dim sum. Normally, when we don't finish something, they kindly give us a box so we can pack our food to go. Well, NOT TODAY. They charged us for EACH BOX (2 boxes) that we needed to pack some of our left overs. Okay, I can understand that the bay area and wherever may charge for PLASTIC BAGS when ordering take out//taking food to go. BUT REALLY? CHARGING FOR CONTAINERS? I don't think this is reasonable.. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SIGN INDICATING that there would be a charge for containers, etc. I was taken aback by this and it was just... horrible thinking about this whole situation. Look, I don't mind paying for some boxes IF the LAWS have changed, or IF THERE WAS A NOTICE or sign of some sort to notify customers that there is a fee for packing your left overs to go... Disappointed in this charge of BOXES here. Maybe they're charging for boxes, or every little thing you take home.. maybe they'll charge for a toothpick too... to gain back some money from renovating their ceiling when that RAT dropped from the ceiling onto a plate of a customer's food (check the news it really did happen that's why their ceilings are closed up now). read more

This is my favorite place for dim sum in the Bay Area. From their portions to the service it is overall impressive. The menu is now with color and pictures and prices. We ordered the basics like har gow, siu mai, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, chicken feet, rice rolls, XLB and green onion pancake. The XLB dumplings lacked soup but it was alright. Everything is delicious. the menu includes dim sum items as well as chinese food fare, including soups, and entrees. You don't order by picking off the cart like at typical dim sum places (which I don't mind at all.) and that's how you order either your dumplings or entrees (or heaping piles of both like we did.) The prices are good and the service is fast. Things are generally made available when ready and are cooked to order. My only complaint is that members in my dining party have a shrimp allergy and they don't clearly indicate when a dish shrimp or other seafood (if it says 'beef and scallion, and contains shrimp too, that's bad.) Also, this plaza is super popular for Asian food, culture and shopping in general, so good luck finding a parking space while the sun is up. read more

My brown boyfriend and my white self had no idea that Sunday is the day that these sorts of places fill up. We stupidly went on a Sunday. After a harrowing parking experience, wherein most notably, an SUV nearly backed into my New! Car! despite my laying on the horn, we arrived to find the place packed to the gills. We got a number and chain smoked outside. They called our number and I dashed inside to check in but they had already called the next group to take our table. Apparently, I wasn't fast enough to claim our seats, but I wonder. Eventually, we did get seated, but I'm docking them a star for this. The food was terrific and cheap. I like the fact that you get to fill out a little form for your order - for me, at least, that eliminates the language barrier. For $25, the two of us ate like pigs. In fact, we ate pigs. We probably could have done without a couple of the dishes, we had plenty left over. We'll be back for sure, just not on a Sunday. We were ordering from the sheet when the lady seemed impatient. She was trying to get us to hurry up and told us that what i've ordered is enough to eat. F*cking lady... You're not my mom... Dim Sum King is always a safe choice. I've been here numerous times and its always busy. Which is fine because they really get you in and out so the wait is never really that long. Downfall of it, you better eat fast and get the heck out of there. Their dim sum has always been satisfying for dim sum cravings. Note: there is a charge for hot tea. Ordered hot jasmine tea, fried shrimp balls, shrimp rice rolls and the egg custard buns. All were great and not too greasy. I suggest trying the egg custard buns if you've never had one; they're soft, delicious and just perfect. The shrimps balls were very tasty and not too greasy. The shrimps rolls were a little bland but they weren't extremely bad. This is where I had to knock off one star. They serve dim sum all day long here! I dont know if that's a good or bad thing really .. since that questions the freshness of their food. I've been here with huge tables with a big group of friends to have a dim sum lunch and everyone always comes out satisfied. Their selection isn't the greatest, but I think they can make anything you order most of the time even if it isn't on the mention that they have you write in the orders on. I still prefer other dim sum restaursnts over this one mainly because how bad parking can be on the weekends with so many people coppin their groceries at ranch 99. ps. i think the restrooms need to be cleaned thoroughly. read more

Always our go to place for our dim sum cravings. Staff is very friendly and very helpful. My favorite is the shrimp dumplings, deep fried shrimp balls, pork siu Mai and chives and shrimp balls. My husband loves the steam pork ribs - he can eat 2 orders just himself :) parking can be hard as it is in the same location with Ranch 99 an oriental market. I have been a regular weekend customer here for ages. My standard items were shu mai,har gow, lo bok go, steam pork ribs. Months ago i went to order from this place and everything that i had ordered had changed. It is as if someone else was cooking and the recipes were all changed. I stopped going. Today,I decided to give them another try. Perhaps they realized the change in the taste and corrected it. I was mistaken. It is still not very good. The service was very poor. I waited for spoon that I ordered for 20 minutes. Then the person who gave the spoon to me was the convict cleaner. He never washed his hands. I ordered steamed fish which I waited for almost an hour. When I got it my plate was removed. I thought that they will give to me the plate, but they never did it. I asked to pack fish to go, and waited for about 15 minutes more. Restaurant charges me for 2 lb of fish when I weighd with the sauce, packing things it weghted little bit more than lb. The place is huge and come here during non peak hours because you will receive very great service and you can sit and relax and do business meetings here. If you want a quick Dim Sum meal, come on over. It doesn't have the magic of the carts circling around your table, but the service is quick and the wait staff is well stocked. We like to go during the afternoon to avoid the brunch crowd of families. So far, no problems with the food or service. However, I've had better dim sum!
