The dining room was clean and very roomy, no problems with a wheelchair. The fresh roti prep and cooking is always on display in the center of the dining area. If you want to try some delicious authentic Tai Chinese fusion dishes, you should definitely try Banana Island located in the back of Westlake Shopping center. Hard to find but well worth the time. This place is hidden in an alleyway next to shops. The place was busy and there was a wait when we went there, but we're seated pretty quickly despite that. We ordered our usual the Roti Canai, Seafood Tom Yum, and Lady Fingers Belcan, as well as Basil Chicken, Seafood Scramble Egg Chowfun, and Mango Sticky Rice, which we also got quickly despite it being busy. The Roti Canai is freshly made and can see in the restaurant. Kind of like a Crepe sort of texture with a little crunch. Also, tastes really good with the Curry it comes with. The Seafood Tom Yum had a good amount of Seafood and was cooked perfecly. Also, it was sour but just the right amount. It was kind of like having Sinagong. Lady Fingers Belcan is an Ocra dish with Shrimp and spices. It wasn't slimy and had nice flavor from the spices. The Basil Chicken had good flavor with the Thai Basil Sauce and Veggies mixed with the Chicken. The Seafood Scramble Egg Chowfun was okay. Don't get me wrong, the Seafood was cooked perfectly just like all their other Seafood dishes, but it lacked flavor and there was little to no Egg with this dish. As for the Mango Sticky Rice, it was okay. It comes out hot and is kind of rich with the Coconut Milk, but the Mango balanced it. Came here with a banana island since we both hadn't been here in over 10 years. As secluded as they are, they sure still have a lot of business. The dishes we got were pretty good. The portion for the spare ribs was large, and the noodle dish was solid. Forgot to snap a pic, but got 2 orders of the roti because it was so good. Roti Canai - sooo good with the sauce, easily one of their best and most memorable dishes 2. Satay beef skewers - this was okay, I liked the peanut sauce but the beef was very chewy and tough, hard to eat 3. Sarang seafood - pretty good assortment of seafood, liked the arrangement 4. Saw a really good review on a Facebook group and decided to give them a try--unfortunately the service was inattentive and food was disappointing. There wasn't a wait when I went for dinner, but it was packed and I have no idea why. The roti canai started off really good, and the sauce that came with it was the best part. Everything went downhill from there, as the Chow Kueh Tiew and Pineapple fried rice were very bland. The pineapple fried rice was slightly better because of the abundance of pineapples, but the chow kueh tiew was lackluster. The seafood in the dish was also notably flavorless along with the noodles, so I was disappointed because this is a classic Singaporean/Malay dish. On top of that, they served a pot of tea (just a regular Asian metal pot with a cheap teabag) and then also charged for it without informing us. It's not common practice for this at non-dim sum Asian restaurants unless they inform you, so I was surprised. This restaurant has been here for DECADES. I remember coming here when I was a child and enjoying chicken skewers and the roti! And now I come back as an adult to enjoy the chicken skewers and roti, nothing has changed. It still keeps its interior of greens and yellows with what looks like an island in the middle of the restaurant. It feels like home. Everything is delicious, I don't think I've ever had a "bad" food experience here, unless I outright just don't like the food, no matter how it's cooked. I liked the ribs androti a lot, and enjoyed the okra, though the calamari and shrimp in the okra dish tasted mostly of shrimp paste, and that was if you got some sauce on it. Great service as well. But the decor inside is really interesting. It's a very unique vibe with the brown and turquoise color scheme and abundant plants. It was a bit hard to find the restaurant though as it's a bit hidden behind where most of the shops are and the entrance is to one side. Flaky, light, and perfectly crispy on the outside with that soft chew inside. Hands down one of the best orders here and a must every visit. Thai Fried Rice - One of the best I've had. Well-seasoned, smoky, and packed with flavor. As a former cook in a Thai restaurant, I don't say that lightly--this one truly delivers. Pad Thai - Also excellent. Balanced sweetness, tang, and savoriness, with well-cooked noodles and generous toppings. Again, coming from someone who's cooked Thai food professionally, this was impressive. Malaysian Pork Chop - Rich, flavorful, and satisfying. Tender meat with a bold sauce that really stands out--comfort food done right. Volcano Spareribs - This wasn't actually what we thought we ordered initially, but wow... no regrets. Sticky, flavorful, and absolutely worth it. A pleasant surprise and something I'd happily order again. Assam Laksa - This was the only dish that didn't quite work for us. We've tried laksa at many other places, and unfortunately this one fell short of our expectations. The flavor just wasn't for us--but we appreciate the effort and know tastes can vary. Love this place! Over due review but my family brings out of town relatives to this restaurant because of the delicious food. This is a hidden gem in Daly City, westlake neighborhood. The staff and servers are all professional. Their manager has good customer service skills especially with large groups coming to dine at lunch or dinner. Must go to is the roti, chicken satay and the shrimp puff for appetizers. My favorite entrees are the fried rice, and the the taro nest with vegetables. Fried rice menu has so much variety, depending if you like seafood or meat they have it. The fried banana with vanilla ice cream for dessert is a nice sweet ending. The spacing of the seats and table are a good amount with a nice decor around the restaurant. Don't forget to ge their Malaysian Porkchops! Soo delicious and I craved it weekly when I was pregnant. For the main dishes, we tried the Tom Yum rice noodle soup, Pad Thai, fried squid, and string beans, with mango sticky rice for dessert. Everything was flavorful with generous portions. The total for 5 people came to around $121, including gratuity. The only downside was that the Pad Thai and string beans were a bit too oily for my taste--after a couple of bites, it got a little heavy. But the rice noodle soup was definitely a highlight! Busy. I did not know this place is vibin'. The last time I dined here was pre-pandemic and I've never seen it get full with hungry customers waiting in line to get seated until now. Anyway, we came here to get Roti Canai. It is the only place I know where you could actually watch them make it. It is as fresh as it gets. I loved the texture, paper thin crispy on the outside and soft with a little bit of chew on some parts. The flavor was lacking though, so the curry dipping sauce is a must. We also ordered - Poh Piah - a Singaporean style fresh rolls with egg and veggies filling. It was plated on a bed of lettuce which I enjoyed very much as a salad. I was looking forward to eating here, but was disappointed by what I ordered. The atmosphere is fine (though the restaurant would be better without any windows). The service isn't great. The waiters just kind of stand by the walls. They take your order, but don't come back unless you call them, or until you're given the check. What disappointed me the most is I ordered a meal that didn't have meat (the cabbage mushroom soup). What I got was a cabbage mushroom soup that has shrimp and chicken. When I complained about it, they just said they don't know why it's not included in the menu description! They then said next time ask if it has meat. Those are two main ingredients! read more

They have an extensive menu. We ordered the roti telur, pineapple fried rice, Malaysian Buddhist, half of Hainanese chicken, Singapore tofu, sarang chicken, and chow keuh teow. The roti telur was cold and it had no onion in there. It was a disappointing appetizer. The pineapple fried rice was too bland. The Malaysian Buddhist came with a mixed of fresh vegis. The Singapore tofu and chow keuh teow were ok. The Hainanese chicken was kind of on the salty side. The ginger and scallions sauce paired well with the chicken. The chicken sarang came in a fried taro nest and it was a pretty flavorful dish. Overall, the prices were fairly reasonable and they gave us generous portions. I like this restaurant because it has a very chill family friendly ambiance. I have come with friends and with my brother, and I would definitely come back with other friends/family. Both times I have been here we didn't have to wait too long even though the restaurant was pretty packed. So I would recommend coming a little before peak dinner times -- so before 6pm. Welcome to the wonderful world of American Malaysian. Or if you will American Singaporean. (Singaporean is a branch of Malaysian cooking with the addition of a lot of Chinese dishes. Singapore was built in historical Malaya but had a super-heavy concentration of Chinese immigration.) American Malaysian/Singaporean is a thing. It is a good thing. And you can get it at Banana Island. * * * Assuming you can find Banana Island. Banana Island is one of the best hidden restaurants in the Bay Area. Banana Island is buried in an obscure outer building in the Westlake Shopping Mall in Daly City. Being in a shopping mall in Daly City puts it out of reach of Bay Area residents who use BART or MUNI to get places. It is nowhere near Caltrain. Either you own a car, you Uber, you bike, you walk or you learn the busses that serve Daly City. Getting to Westlake Shopping Center does not end your problems. Banana Island is BEHIND the building that houses Massage Envy and Tasty Pot. It is totally invisible from the street. You would never know it is there. It is also cut off from the rest of the mall by a gigantic parking structure that looms over Banana Island. Imagine a concrete whale trying to eat the whole restaurant. The only way you are going to get to Banana Island is to locate it in advance on Google maps and then follow the detailed instructions. And lots of people find their way Banana Island and eat there. People come there because the food is insanely good. * * * Now why do I call Banana Island American Malaysian (or American Singaporean) ? Much but not all of the food is adapted to American preferences. Those adaptations produce food that is pretty darn tasty. The two big adaptations. 1) Malaysian and Singaporean food - like Indian and Thai food - loves its spices and loves its curries. Sambal - spicy multi-flavored sauce - is the rule of the day. There are as many different sambals as there are Thai curries. Heat levels can range from no big deal to blowing your head off. There are many many mild and no-spice recipes in the Malaysian cookbook. Banana Island draws most of its recipes from the no-spice side of Malaysian cooking. Typical example - boiled seafood with noodles and vegetables. For comfort food, you can't beat the mild dishes. They are good for you. They make you feel good. Mommy is taking care of you. And real life Singaporeans eat a ton of these things. They also have a set of quite yummy mild sambal dishes. Look for any of the main dishes that feature shrimp paste in the sauce. Shrimp paste is to Malaysian/Singaporean cooking what butter and cream are to French cooking. Anything with shrimp paste in it is just good. If you want something from the fiery side of Malaysian cooking - check out the small number of dishes that are called ________ Malaysian. (Beef Malaysian, Fish Malaysian etc.) This will get you a medium heat sambal on your food. It will also get you something that is just wonderful. 2) Singaporean cuisine uses a ton of pig organs. Malaysian cuisine proper uses no pig organs but does use a lot of beef organs and chicken organs. (Remember, Muslims can't eat pork. Singapore is religiously diverse.) There are few pleasures greater than a Singaporean bowl of pig organ soup. Malaysian chicken liver or beef liver in sambal is food for the gods. Americans don't like organ meats. So organ meats don't show up on the Banana Island menu. * * * If you want all of the exotic taste delights of the Malay Peninsula. You will just have to buy a ticket to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. If you want to save plane fare, you can just go to Singapore and take a 20 minute bus ride across the bridge to Johor Bahru on the Malaysian side. Going to Banana Island is a hell of a lot easier. Sure you are going to be eating mostly mild dishes ... But those mild dishes are so darned good !!!! If you absolutely positively needed a flaming hot bowl of tripe in sambal, you could probably talk to Banana Island's management in advance. I have little doubt that they could fix that up for you. This place is a family favorite, but it's a bit hard to find. The front entrance is located in an alley facing a huge parking structure. We recently came here to celebrate Mother's Day with a party of 20. To make things simple, we decided to order the set menu ($428 per table). There was so much food, and it was all very tasty. Here's what the set menu comes with: + Roti canal (3) - the lightest, flakiest roti with a curry dipping sauce. + Satay chicken - good, typical, comes with curry as well. I wish the curry was more peanut-buttery. + Shrimp puff - ground shrimp ball was delicious and wrapped in bacon. + Green papaya salad - crisp and refreshing + Sizzling beef - good, typical, comes with bell peppers and onions + Kang Kung Balecan (ong choy) - kinda reminds me of spinach and celery. There aren't a lot of Malaysian and Singaporean food in the Bay Area so if you are in the mood, Banana Island is certainly a viable option. Roti Canal - this version of the Indian flatbread is much thinner than what I've eaten in the past. The mild coconut curry that accompanies it as dipping sauce is fairly bland. It's a very popular dish here but I would rate it 3/5. Satay Chicken - the Satay Chicken is a good portion size and tastes good. It's not as tender as the ones I've had in Singapore but not bad. The peanut dipping sauce has good texture and balance of flavor. 4/5 Volcano Spareribs - these are deep fried spareribs mixed with a sweet and savory sauce, a little similar to Peking spareribs. The portion size is huge and I would say this is a good value but nothing really pops. While it comes with a sizing plate and aluminum foil, the ribs were not really sizzling hot. You can find an elevated version of this dish at New Jumbo Restaurant by ordering the House Special Spareribs with BBQ Sauce. 3/5 Chow Kueh Teow - having recently come back from Malaysia, I've had the local version of this dish. The Chow Kueh Teow here does have "Wok Air" as Chinese call it but is not the same as what you can find in Malaysia which the Work is cooked over Charcoal. Here at Banana Island, it's a little more "wet". I would have preferred it to be dryer. I also think it needs a little more egg compared to the noodles. It also comes with a standard portion of shrimp and squid. The shrimp has a nice crunch to it. Finally, the portion is rather small for $15.95. 4/5 Lady Finger Belacan - there aren't a lot of stir fry okra dishes so this is a unique dish to try. The Malaysian shrimp paste is really mild and I don't think it's spicy at all. The okra as a slight crunch to it but not as much as "work air" as the Chow Kueh Teow dish above. 4/5 Overall, the restaurant is fairly large and clean and is nicely decorated. What a wonderful "hole in the wall!" I quote because it's a huge place but in the back by the garage where all the other stores in this mall were on the other side. Had my family not told me about it, I would have never known! The food was really good and the service was too! We ordered so many dishes to share but some of my favorites were actually the vegetables! We got sautéed okra with garlic- cooked to perfection, not too soft. The string beans had so much flavor but in an oily overwhelming way. It was the Asian version of "Al dente." I loved it. I also enjoyed the pineapple fried rice. Normally I find this dish overrated but this one was just so fragrant. It wasn't dry, burnt, or oily. If I come back to this area I will definitely be back! read more

Food was great tasting overall. Went with my mom on a slow and steady Wednesday afternoon at 1:30pm. If it's your first time coming here it'll be hard to find. We had a really hard time finding the place that we had to call them to ask for direction. It's well hidden. The food was very flavorful and the portion was good. Service was ok, just wish there would've been servers checking on us a bit more often. They didn't have chili oil but they did have cherry sauce which is very good and spicy . All the food tasted very authentic and flavorful . The ambiance is tiki bar vibe. CONS: The only thing I don't like is that the staff don't use gloves while preparing our food. My family and I love coming here. They are consistently busy so we always call to make a rezzy. Ambiance is fine- lots of traditional decor. My daughters' favorite thing about Banana Island is watching them make the Roti Canai and eating them!! it's truly the BEST. We come here so often that I keep a list of our usual order on my phone so I can easily pull it up when it's time to order. I'll share it with ya! Luckily we went early! The restaurant was pretty filled by the time we left, & it was maybe just close to 6:00! Just the 2 of us. We shared the roti canai, sizzling platter seafood, sizzling platter tofu & veggies, & pineapple fried rice with shrimp. All very tasty! The seafood was cooked perfectly & very tender, the tofu was creamy inside, the rice had a Smokey taste from the wok, & the roti came w/a very yummy coconut curry sauce. The prices were reasonable, but I wish the portions were just a bit more. The service was very good & we were given just enough attention. Banana Island has been there for many years, but I've never, ever even seen it! No wonder, it's kinda hidden away in the back by the garage that I've never been in either!
