Although I do love my Asian grubs from Geary/ Clement or Irving/ Judah, I live in Bernal & choose to do San Bruno Avenue (Portola district) because it's affordable & closer to me. I used to be a huge fan of Hong Kong BBQ up until they cancelled their 50 cents ice cream scoops & now that Giant Scoop is mostly a take out spot, I still have to give this shop a review. Dim Sum Kitchen is the closest you can get to in terms of taste & quality in regards to Chinese steam tables in the Inner Richmond or Sunset District. Their prices are reasonable & try to get here past 6pm so you can score some good deals! I got a large box of chow fun for $4 & a medium box of tofu for $4! Everything is homemade & fresh. Also this place is cleaner than some their other neighbors. My only complaint is that they are not consistent in menu items being offered. Seemingly they like to rotate & prioritize items that they think will sell out quickly & before the end of the day. Truly this place deserves a 4.5! It was probably more of a 2.5 star experience, but I understand opening up a new business is difficult especially in a city like San Francisco with lots of good eating choices so I'm going to relax my rating and show it as 3 stars. I would hate to scare away potential customers based on one visit on their first day of service. This dim sum restaurant opened up this morning in the Portola neighborhood at the former site of the Hoy Sun Restaurant. It is my understanding that some of the employees might have worked at the previous establishment. Dim sum items are displayed up front at the counter in glass cases. You order your items there and you may take your items to go or to dine in. They also have menu service at the tables but among the confusion of opening day that information was not initially stated. Their huge full restaurant menu has entrees, noodles, porridge and more. The service is upbeat and friendly. The lady who helped me at the front counter answered all of my questions efficiently but seemed hurried possibly because of the long stream of customers behind me. For my first order I ordered chicken siu mai, shrimp har gow, pork and peanut dumplings and a combination bun along with a bottled water. They have an assortment of chilled beverages in a refrigerator unit within the front counter area. Hot tea and coffee is also available. The food temperature was way off so I was instantly disappointed that the dim sum is served cold. It was not even lukewarm. The chicken siu mai seemed spot on in flavor and I think I would have enjoyed it much more served hot. Both the shrimp har gow and the peanut and pork dumplings had a rather thick skin. The har gows seem to have lots a filler rather than shrimp but it was the sudden bite of the MSG that hit me almost instantaneously. It's strong, and as I sit here writing this review nearly an hour later the tip of my tongue is still numb. The peanut and pork dumplings are decent. The pork has a good mix of not very lean meat and crunchy chopped peanuts. I have not eaten the combination bun as it is huge, but if it is extraordinary I will edit my review later. For now my favorite dim sum take out spot (Wing Lee on Clement) has no worries. They will definitely not lose my patronage to this restaurant. For the most part this is a cash only place however they will accept credit cards on orders totaling $25 or more. I wish the folks at Dim Sum Kitchen well. They wanted me to pay to get my correct order, which was already suspicious but whatever! This place is pretty good for dim sum take out. I will always prefer sit down dim sum spots, but Dim Sum Kitchen really does the trick when you have guests over your house. Yes, many of the dumplings have thick skin, but the insides are quite filling. They don't seem to skimp here. The lady helping me was actually pretty nice, and because I had a big order, she wrote everything down so she wouldn't forget. I was hesitant about coming here at first because of reviews for bad customer service. But I didn't have that type of experience. Definitely closer to a 2.5* experience. We went on its grand opening because we loved Hoy Sun and was excited to see what Dim Sum Kitchen had to offer. We were pretty underwhelmed by the food & service. As it was the first day, it's understandable that the wait staff still struggled with kinks. But I was disappointed that it took 30 minutes after I ordered for someone to inform me they didn't have the dish I ordered. I ordered from the menu again, with the caveat that if they didn't have my new order, I'd have wonton mein -- and waited another 10 minutes until they told me that they had neither of those dishes. No wonton! at a Cantonese restaurant! Fourth time's a charm - I ended up with salted fish & chicken fried rice (鹹魚雞炒飯 - $10.95). The portion was large with a generous portion of salted fish (and some of its bones). The wok hei was basically all there. I would try other things first before ordering this again (and with scallion). My dad had the Hai Nam Chicken Rice (海南雞飯 - $8.95), which promptly arrived. The traditional parts of the dish (chicken quarter + ginger sauce) & coconut rice were meh, but the boy choy was damn good though. Overall, I would give this place another chance... maybe two. This place is a rip off. My husband went to go get porridge for my daughter since she is sick. Went there yesterday charged us $5 for the porridge and today he went back to get the same kind and charged him 8.65 because they have to get it from somewhere else. When my husband placed the order the lady said its $5 which my husband gave and told him to wait 7 to 8 mins since they ran out and had to go to their "sister" restuarant to get more. My husband ask them where that place is so he can just go there instead of waiting, the lady told him, she cant say where it is. Once my husband got the porridge and about to leave another lady runs out yelling at my husband saying he owes another 3.65. My husband confused why does he owe 3.65 when he already paid 5? Hoy Sun used to be our go to authentic, cheap, dinner spot so needless to say, take my review with a grain of salt. There were more cons than pros. Pros: Seating is identical to Hoy Sun's (plenty. For those of you who haven't been to this location before). The complimentary soup was nice. I noticed throughout the entire meal that there was a low level of MSG. The flavors were there but didn't have that characteristic MSG flavor. Cons: We were seated pretty quickly but that wasn't the case for a lot of people. Throughout our meal, we witnessed 2 parties leave after waiting a ridiculous amount of time for the waiter to take their order. This leads me to the next con, the waiters were all over the place. We overheard one of the waiters telling a friend that he came to help out once a week. He was a friendly guy who was constantly zipping around trying to do everything at once. Waiters were forgetting about many requests through the madness. Needless to say, they need to organize the waiters' jobs especially during prime dinner time when the restaurant is packed. Food was very not authentic, many restaurants on this street have the same dish that tasted better and is less expensive. My experience was horrible, the waitress only suggested me all the higher priced items, Roasted pigeons, stir fried crab, etc. even after I told her that I didn't like those dishes, she just gave up, and basically told me that their cook wasn't so good with other dishes. Unfortunately if you decide to dine in, the dim sum in not on the menu. Actually many things are not on the menu so unless you speak or read Chinese, you won't know what off menu items are available for dine in. IMO, the prices are a bit on steep side for the sit down menu. It's also a little misleading to call this a dim sum kitchen when you can't order dim sum all day for dine in. I noticed various people sit down thinking they could order dim sum but quickly took a look at the non-dim sum menu and then got up and left. The waitresses will tell you no dim sum but point you to the to-go food in the front of the store. Quite frankly, if this place is to survive, I think they should allow dim sum for dine in as well as take out. Until then I will give this place a generous 3 stars because I hope it doesn't shut down. read more

I'm inclined to give a higher than average rating for this new place (for dinner, I have no idea about the dim sum). Some Yelpers are docking for their service, which is understandable, although I come to this kind of Chinese local place with the mindset to not expect much in that respect. (And really, our service was pretty normal, nothing too off or too amazing.) In terms of food, I do think it is quite good and that I would come back for certain things. Their signature is the steamed rice over lotus leaf in the bamboo baskets, which is something like a fusion between a (usually dim sum) lotus-wrapped rice in terms of style and a clay pot rice in terms of ingredients. It's pretty big and may be a lot for one person, so it's meant to be shared along with their other dishes. The actual dish matches their picture pretty well (veggies are probably seasonal), and there is a decent amount of each type of meat. The deeper flavors from the meat as well as the earthy tone of the leaf are infused into the rice and the dish as a whole, making it pretty cool to try. Some other dishes we tried were a roasted squab, which isn't too unique on its own, but it's quite affordable and is a good sharing appetizer. We also got the pork neck with string beans. It was very tasty albeit a tad greasy, although I wouldn't complain too much since pork neck can be pretty fatty. It's seasoned as sweet just like bbq pork, and it's also very tender as well. Overall I think the meal was pretty good, and the biggest thing that I would have preferred is if they made their dishes less oily. Again, it's not entirely surprising since I expect it from this kind of place--just know what you're getting into when you walk in. read more

OK dim sum place along the corridor. The highlights - siu mai, cheap and tasty stir fried sticky rice, porridge, and rice rolls. The filling inside the shrimp dumplings and other dumplings were very grainy unfortunately. Also, a couple of times, you would think the items inside the steam table are piping hot, but when it gets in your hands, they really are only lukewarm. The bad Parking is terrible of course and the servers were relatively new since they didn't know too much about what to do. Terrible name for a restaurant. Thought it was only dim sum; walked by realized it was a nice dinner place. Went by tonight to try it out. Rice with Sparerib in lotus leaf. Pretty well done. The spareribs, lap cheung and veggies really gave the rice a nice flavor. The dish looks bigger than it actually was. Barely enough rice for two people. Wish they put more rice on the bottom. Fish fillet with veggies (yu choy). Come out piping hot. The fish was moist and flavorful, veggies the same. Excellent. Clay pot with vermicelli and Chinese melon. Cooked well, and lots of flavor. Overall the taste of the food was very good. A couple of cons: 1) prices for some items a bit overpriced, especially for this area. If items were 1-2$ cheaper, I'm pretty sure this place would be packed. 2) no complimentary soup. For dinner, that should be a standard. The food wasn't bad but I think they should be welcoming of all of their customers so that is where my disappointment sets in. When I walked in some people, workers included, started talking and pointing at me. I only came in for some sesame balls but the cashier was letting others cut me in line, until I asserted my spot. Also, The cashier's personality really changed once it was my turn to order. Look, I literally only came in for sesame balls because a friend had told me about this place, I didn't come to feel like my business wasn't wanted because I might not be from the same background.
